I’m someone who naturally since birth has kidneys which can be prone to failure if I don’t care for them. Usually what I drink these days are maybe half a bottle of water a day and a cup of tea (maybe 8-10 oz serving, usually mint, 2 light sugars). Which is not much, but I’m doing good (I think). Then I discovered peace tea. Once I drank a whole can in pretty much a single sit down. Just that one can (I think on it it said 1 can = 2 servings 🤷🏻‍♀️), was enough to make my kidneys ache something fierce. Maybe it’s cause of my specific kidneys or the fact that I don’t really like anything sugary, but if I couldn’t handle that ONE can… these people drinking EIGHT of their sugar with water drink A DAY. I mean maybe a peace tea isn’t the same amount of sugar as their “water” but still… oof…
I just did some unnecessary math of the sugar:
      Razzleberry Peace Tea = 35 grams = 8.5 teaspoons
      My mint tea = 8 grams = 2 teaspoons
      (One teaspoon equals 4-ish grams)
It’s generally recommended Americans (w/ 2,000 calorie diet) consume = 12 teaspoons (48 grams) of sugar daily
I mean I’m failing math, and not for the first time, but I think this time my math is mathing but their’s isn’t… 👀

    TW// ed
A little while ago, I actually used to drink flavored water (not as outrageous tho, more like a little squeeze of a lemonade flavor water enhancer) and to call it “water” encourages a… weird mindset. Firstly, I adore plain water, and I drink like a gallon a day, and so my mom got me a water enhancer because it contained sodium in it. Drinking too much plain water, can cause your sodium levels to drop and it can harm you very much, so my mom thought it would prevent me from dying lmao. (That’s why drinks like Gatorade or liquid IVs have sodium, to replenish your body of the sodium it lost from for example running)
Later on, I developed an ed and I missed juices, sodas, smoothies, and basically any drink that wasn’t water or unsweetened tea. So I would continue using my enhancers pretty frequently so I’d drink more water to prevent me from drinking a simple orange juice, because I did not want to drink my calories.
So, it’s true, these aren’t THAT harmful from an objective point of view… but many of these syrups and what not, have a very high sodium content, and it’s not like they are drinking just PLAIN WATER to counteract it… because these drinks ARE their water. So, on top of the sugar level some of these have, they’re drinking copious amounts of sodium in one sitting!
Moreover, if one is struggling with an ed like I was, and resorts to these types of things, it might make them more inclined to drink these mixes in very large amounts to suppress their hunger…. So although not that harmful, the side effects from it CAN affect these people and their viewers…

Completely agree! As someone with POTS, I can say that some people can't get hydrated from water alone. They need electrolytes in the water such as tiny amount of salt and sugar (I'm talking REALLY small amount of sugar) for the body to absorb it.
Also, check your local water chemical levels. Some people are very sensitive to chlorine and fluoride which is often added to tap water to clean it or for "benefits". If your area has a lot of chlorine or is really hard, get filtered water jugs that you refill. I physically can't drink tap water in our city without feeling sick and nauseated, but it's because of the amount of chlorine they put in. Once I switched to filtered water from those big 5-gallon jugs and a water dispenser, water has been far more enjoyable for me. It's always nice and cold, and if I want hot water, it's on tap, too.

Some of them even have some health benefits like lemon water. There are so many recipes for infused water too. It actually stays water as you're not pouring in dyes and tons of sugar. Sure, the flavor is a lot less strong, but it's way more healthy for you and is actually helps to improve your hydration.

They're doing everything in their power to avoid just drinking tea. Seriously, I have a birthday cake flavoured tea I bought like a year ago that I still haven't finished because it's so incredibly sweet that I can't have it too often (and it really does taste exactly like birthday cake). It's a loose leaf made up of dates and a few different kinds of leaves. Only natural sugars.
I cannot fathom how you can go THIS full circle about drinking "healthy" flavoured water and completely ignore the existence of tea. You can have it hot or cold, and it's infinitely less expensive to make than buying a million syrup pumps. Tea actually has health benefits too, it's caffeinated but doesn't dehydrate you like coffee, and it may even help PREVENT cavities by reducing bacteria and acid in your mouth.
Tea comes in so many varieties and flavours, and unless you've tried every type of tea in existence, "I don't like tea" is simply not an excuse. People who think they don't like tea have probably just tried black tea and assumed all flavoured teas still have a black tea-like flavour. Try blueberry tea once and get back to me, it's sweeter than any soda I've ever had.

I forget the specific mechanism but when you are nauseus and drink water it can trigger the vomit reflex (I think its how your mouth waters before you vomit so you accidentslly trick your body into vomiting). This is why when sick, people grab things like gatorade. So yes, I do beleive them about water and nausea.

While it's "better" than the normal sodas on a technical level, it is *not* and never will be a substitute for water. And listen, for those who actually have health conditions that need that extra help to intake water, that's fine. Most are decaf, and they add a flavor that isn't too strong but are somewhat sweeter and smell really good without any added milk or sugar. There are a lot of options on the market if you go looking. You can prep a lot of it at a time, let it steep for a long time for more flavor (try experimenting with starting with boiling water or room temp, there is a difference). But if you get into more traditional teas (i.e. Chinese teas) which are known to have many benefits, make sure you eat something with them if there is nothing in the tea, cause they can and will make your stomach upset.

Interesting! In the UK they introduced a sugar tax to reduce the amount of sugar we consume, reducing obesity (in theory) but of course that just means that all the companies sell more of their diet/sugar free sweetener versions of drinks rather than actually reducing sugar in their products, taste gross I hate it so bad

I think artificial sweeteners are an okay way to wean yourself off high sugar drinks. If you quit cold turkey then you might experience more cravings. But in the end they should be a "rare" consumption, not just a substitution without trying to change the underlying habits.

So I also had weight-loss surgery and drinking water in the beginning was SO difficult for me. My stomach was reduced to the size of an egg and I was on a liquid diet. I ended up passing out and going to the hospital for fluids because I was dehydrated and my blood pressure dropped. Now I'm three years out and can eat healthy size portions and drink about 100+ oz water a day no problem. But plain water has always been difficult to drink even before surgery. I literally would gag trying to drink plain water. Anywho, I rely on a little bit of mio, crystal light, or zip fizz (vitamin flavoring that's a little fizzy) to flavor my water. I tend to dilute it quite a bit. For example, one packet of crystal light suggests you add it to a 16 oz bottle and I'll add it to a 20+ oz water bottle. That little bit of flavor helps me quite a bit. I can't imagine adding zero free syrup too, sounds way to sweet. Anywho, I lost 135 LBS (from a size 24/26 to a size 10) and kept it off. Drinking water is critical and according to my urologist, adding the bit of flavoring is OK.

    • @Lolidella82
      @Lolidella82 Год назад +20

@@katiekat2074 in my case, I think it was, 1. I drank more pop than water before my weight-loss and surgery and I didn't hydrate enough at that. 2. After surgery I was forbidden from carbonated beverages and was told I had to drink minimum 40 oz water which was hard to do with my new stomach. All in all, it was a sudden change that took time to adjust to. Now I have no problem with it but I do still have to flavor my water a little. Right now I'm working on a 24 oz water bottle with two modest squeezes of sugar free crystal light. I can do infused water too. I just have to have something in the water. The only time I can drink plain water is if I'm working out and very thirsty. Anywho, I don't know why I've always been like that.

Additionally, artificial sweetners have a bad wrap from like 1 old AF study that's not really relevant since it referenced giving mice inordinate amounts of artificial sweeteners no person would ever consume in a lifetime.

Background in organic chemistry here, just wanna say that there's this thing called 'sweetening power'. Normal sugar has a power set at around 1, while artificial sweeteners are sweeter... way sweeter. I've checked the ingredients of the syrup they used (Skinny syrups), the two main artificial sweeteners they use is sucralose and acesulfame-K. Respectively, the have a sweetening power of 600 and 200, which means they are 600 and 200 times sweeter than normal sugar. With the amount they put and consume, it's safe to say they are, in fact, sugar addicts.
