The Spring has definitely seen better days!😶

The older HW77 had lots of mainspring pre-load like the old Feinwerkbau Sport.
Be careful! Wear eye protection and pair of leather work gloves when removing mainsprings if you do not have a spring compressor. It appears that the modern method (Like the old Venom Arms Company) is to use a shorter spring with thicker wire. I always try to fit as long a spring as possible with thinner wire so as to reduce piston bounce and create a less snappy firing cycle.
It is all largely subjective and we all have our own preferences but I'll never forget the first time firing the early HW77 with it's fast low recoiling magic. That is how all spring piston air rifles should shoot... Fast forward to 2022 when most spring piston air rifles are just high powered designs fitted with a weaker spring to comply to our 12 ft lbs limit. Companies like Air Arms, Hatsan, Diana and even Weihrauch make many rifles for the unrestricted markets and detune them for the UK which renders them lazy and hold sensitive. The HW77 with its 25mm internals and 80mm piston stroke was approaching the ideal set up for UK use.
Keep it legal and enjoy your now classic air rifle.

What sort of costs were involved in the blacking and stock refinishing?n

The re blacking I had was a strange one but cost me £70 but long story I'd guess usually more.
The stock refinish is done by a bloke who does charity slots annually and donates the money to charity £65 again on one of the forums
I think by using the forums and knowledge of these skilled individuals I have probably saved a few £ I'd guess to take to a local shop/craftsmen costs would be more.
I know you can do cold blueing yourself at home and probably videos on RUclips etc how to do this but I've never tried.
I have also done some stock refinishing myself (See my other vodeos) however I wouldn't get near the quality finish this guy does and for the money I paid its well worth it as stock tidying is very time consuming to do it properly
