Loved this video! I felt kind of lonely thinking this way because everyone, including myself, speak algospeak, but I0m trying to be the one that helps my friends see this point of view and hopefully, shift the way we talk.
you're a good friend!!! I think just by pointing it out and zooming out you're probably already having a really positive impact on them😊it's easy to fall into the norm but as soon as you become conscious that you're doing it, it becomes a fun journey trying to regain your own speech patterns! it's definitely an evolution I'm on personally too! i hope you find your friends come around 😄sounds like you're a great influence on your community!!
Ok, so I've watched three of your videos now in a row. New viewer. I'm a 39 year old stay at home mom to two toddlers and I'm engaged here with what you're saying. One thing I just realized now (and this isn't a criticism so much as an observation that goes in line with your content) is the way content is edited with these super quick cuts to the next thing being said and then the next and the next and the next... I was recently listening to a very influential person being interviewed and there was always this pause before answering a question or even as they were explaining something, these pauses were so...organic...and refreshing. I understand with short attention spans this can feel uncomfortable but man I find it resets me to this place of active listening and engagement. I felt admiration and awe for this person because it's so unusual to hear these days. I decided, I too, want to pause (think) before I speak. So maybe there can be a new movement of less edits, showing those real pauses necessary to speak thoughtfully and authentically. I think your channel will grow either way but something to consider.
Samantha - i’m OBSESSED with this comment!! I have been thinking about this constantly as i’ve been trying to figure out my style on here! i was even planning on making a video about how movie editing (and subsequently digital media) cuts have gotten faster and faster paced (compare a “Citizen Kane” to a Marvel movie, for example 😂) - unfortunately i actually couldn’t find enough concrete research to prove my theory… but if you’re noticing it too I may have to just put the observation out there, with citations or not! this is such a wonderful observation and thank you for making it!! so I, in my personal speech, and actually quite slow 😅 to the point that I can sometimes be a little self-conscious about it in my workplace environment but honestly i think people just start speaking before they formulate thoughts these days while I’d rather be more intentional with each word. since i’m in my first few months making videos, i’ve felt a little pressured to try to fit into the “RUclips-y” mold but this style of editing I must admit feels super inauthentic to my regular speech patterns!! i definitely just succumbed to what I believe will fit the platform from an editing perspective
that being said, it’s just my first few months!! and i can try something new 🤩 i am so so glad you noticed this because trust me when i say my mind has been in that exact same place, i was just using the style i see do well on the platform so I could hopefully get my authentic ideas and messages across… but maybe that would even be stronger coming from my authentic voice ♥️ it’s something im going to explore in my upcoming videos, you’ve inspired me!! i had no idea there was an appetite for this - thank you so much for seeing right through the editing style and taking the time to call it out to me 🥰 i may have to make a video on this debate i’ve been having internally specifically! appreciate you so much!! you have no idea this was like exactly what ive been needing to hear - feels very freeing 😊
@@kate.cassidy I'm glad the comment landed for you. Your content is actually very valuable and needed, so it doesn't surprise me you've already considered this. And just to clarify I was referring to content in general having quick edits not just yours. I think the first one I watched wasn't edited and I was just as engaged with that slower style. We're all just getting too used to this fast paced (unnatural) speaking style and I can completely understand why you'd create content this way, to cater to those short attention spans. I've been known to switch my playback speed on videos to super quick because I want to speed everything up and don't think I'm doing myself any favors. I'm sure it messes with dopamine and trying to get more more more faster faster etc. Our poor brains lol...
When i first read 1984 like a year ago i was shocked about, at some points, how newspeak and tiktok lingo are similar. Like how a person in 1984 that was erased is called an unperson is pretty similar to the TikTok algo censoring suicide or death and so creators started to use unalive.
Wow, this video really hit me! I love how you dive so deeply into topics that most people barely scratch the surface of. The way you explained how social media is shaping our language and maybe even limiting how we think critically really gave me something to chew on. The 'Newspeak' comparison? Chilling, but so spot on. I catch myself sometimes falling into 'ducke'-like speech without even realizing it, and it makes me wonder how much of it is just automatic. Your content always gets me thinking in a way few creators do. Thank you for sharing this - it’s so refreshing and important. Please keep it up!
i'm so glad you appreciate it ☺this one was definitely going out on a limb but i love digging into these types of things so going to try to sprinkle more of this content into my channel!! just a little insight into the thoughts that bounce around in my brain haha 1984 is of course an extreme parallel to draw, but i'm seeing it personally around me that some peers don't seem to be thinking particularly critically and are unintentionally falling into consumerism-driven cultural homogenization... i hope by making some content to critique it i can help shine a light on the concerning patterns! 💡more to come :)
I have genuinely been intrigued with this topic lately. It is wonderful how you have articulated this video because I was someone who loved to post things from my perspective on Instagram as a young adult but, now I feel like there is no point sharing anything online though I love to create because I do not cater to what the algorithm prefers.
if you love to create i think it's so valuable to share your voice and perspective 😊but like you said if you don't want to cater to the algorithm he reward has to come from the sharing, not any sort of expectation to grow 😅i enjoy connecting with even a few like-minded people 🌻 thank you for the sharing!! i'm glad the topic resonated!!
I'm so glad I've found your channel! In this year I realised that I was addicted to social media and it was consuming my life. I've already deleted all these apps and now I feel like I need to learn how to live without them. It's crazy. Thank you for your content ❤
Nadia 💌thank you for the kind words, that's EXACTLY why i make this type of content so i'm really glad you've found your way here!! it's a strange transition from being addicted to deciding to take back control of you life/time but it is SUCH a rewarding one in the long term! i know how crazy it feels - i've made some other vids on it in my "social media detox" playlist and will continue to make more 🤗 we're in this together and life is so much more fulfilling for it!!
I'm old enough to remember people complaining about "valley girl" talk in the 80s and "ebonics" in the 90s. This has the ring of that same kind of moral panic. TikTok is a community (or a community of communities) and communities tend to develop their own shorthand languages. That's just human nature. It has the dual purpose of 1) making communication a bit more efficient, and 2) using language as an in-group/out-group identifier. It's as old as language itself. Can these little community languages influence or limit how we express ourselves? Sure. I know this well enough firsthand. I'm a nurse and I work in mental health, and both nursing and the mental health community have very specialized and deeply developed ways of speaking. It's a shorthand, it's efficient. But what you gain in efficiency you lose in breadth of expression. The trick is knowing *when* it's limiting you and when to break out of it and talk like a normal person. I think (or hop) most of us do know when that happens.
this is such a great perspective to offer, thank you for sharing!! completely agreed with you - there has been some form of slang forever and your point on "using language as an in-group/out-group identifier" is so true 🤝 i hope you're right and i'm wrong and that most people know when to code switch back into their individual style! i think it's more-so paired with the addictive qualities and hyperconsumerism promoting sides of tech that cause me the additional pause... your expertise in mental health provides you valuable insight into human behavior though!! sometimes i feel like it's those of us who work for the tech platforms who raise the most alarm but also may not be fully in touch 😂thank you for sharing your voice!!
Another great video! I was just talking the other day with my son, he's almost 40, about George Orwell's book 1984, I love that it is still being used in schools. It has made thinkers out of kids. We need more of that today!
i feel like it's becoming more and more relevant - i hope high schools are still using it as a staple in literature classes curriculum! amazing to think it was written in the 1940s
You make a valid point, but I think you're missing a key aspect. Recent studies, such as those conducted by PISA in Europe, have highlighted a concerning trend: younger generations' vocabulary is rapidly diminishing due to a decline in reading and an overreliance on spoken language. Books provide a richer, more nuanced vocabulary, while everyday speech tends to be simpler and more limited. This ties into the themes of *1984*, where a reduced vocabulary can lead to a narrowing of thought, ultimately making it harder to express complex ideas. It's a troubling prospect when we consider the implications for critical thinking and intellectual freedom.
Lucie - this is AWESOME perspective thank you so much for adding this color!!!! this feels like it could be its own topic in it of itself! i hadn't thought of that extra step regarding younger generations reading less 😵💫i know personally my vocabulary expands soooo much when i'm reading regularly - one of my favorite things is stumbling on a word when i'm reading I don't know and running to the dictionary to collect it for my knowledge 😂 i worry for the younger generations (especially those who already had learning loss due to Covid disrupting their education) who are entering a world filled with AI that creates shortcuts to reading and writing! both are such important skills for creative expression and just.... life! and i think they are getting lost even more as the years go by... but i digress.. thank you for your thoughtful comment ❤immensely valuable take!!
You and your channel are getting to be more and more fun. Seriously. Just the other day I was lamenting how badly language and expression have deteriorated. Everything sounds so trite and sterile. While it's true that every generation comes up with their own slang (even Shakespeare was full of timely slang!), that slang was what I like to think of as juicier ways of saying things. The young kept spicing things up, treading on the edge of respectability...or just jumping off that ledge! Now? There is very little juice, romance, wild flights of fancy and abandon in language. The language police have erased things like sweethearts, lovers, darlings, etc. Now we are all partners. It sounds like a business arrangement, not a relationship. Sterile. And that's just one example. I find it terribly tragic. I hope you are able to shake people out of their "proper" rut and get them speaking and thinking juicily again. Get some wild flights of fancy going again! Also, 451 subscribers!! YAY! Snoopy dance of JOY!
trite and sterile exactlyyyy!! i did want to touch on the fact that every generation of course has it's own characteristic slang, but i think something about this newest digital/social media-born language era feels like we've really all given up so much control to what a few company's algorithms deem as popular and then circulate ad nauseam. the inspiration from this video was a conversation i had with a peripheral friend who was unfortunately chronically online and it really showed in the way she spoke📱and if you pair that with the mindless consumption that can often go hand-in-hand... all trends i find concerning 😒 thank you for sharing your perspective!!! i'm glad you're enjoying - i'm trying to shake my content up more this month
I have never opened a TikTok account, I have Instagram which I never log in to, and I log in to Facebook a little. Therefore, I find myself far from the things that are prevalent on social media. Most of my time is spent on RUclips following useful content.
I watched all your videos, I understand your English, and I like your pronunciation, but in this video I felt like you were speaking another language. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I feel like I'm listening to Noam Chomsky. Good job as usual Kate
