In regards to the precapture: I think it doesn't actually take half your frame rate, I think it takes 15 shots no matter what. So if you're shooting 30 fps then it will take 15 shots in 0.5 sec, etc. So the less fps you have selected, the longer it will take to get those 15 shots for precapture. Let me know if anyone can confirm that.
Great shots and a good time, as always! Just did some quick testing, and I'd say you're right. I have H+ set to 30fps, H set to 15fps, and low speed continuous at 5fps. Waiting for the buffer to drop and then pressing the shutter button as briefly as possible, I was getting 18 frames at H+, 16 at H, and around 13 on slow. I figure it's usually grabbing about 15 pre-capture frames, and then the additional frames in H and H+ are basically the frames you'd get from a quick shutter press without pre-capture. One tip/trick I like: If you don't need the shutter button half-press for exposure lock, you can leave pre-capture enabled but bypass it by going to full-press immediately, if that makes sense. So you use your back buttons for focus and tracking, and then when you want pre-capture, hold the shutter at half-press to start it rolling. When you don't want pre-capture, just go straight to full-press to shoot normally. I typically leave pre-capture off when I know I won't need it, but that's a handy way to have it enabled but still only use it when you want to.
Actually that is not correct, pre capture is .5 of second period. So if you shoot 30 fps that is 15 pre capture, shoot 20 fps you get 10 pre capture and so on. I like 20 fps pre capture so you will get basically 30 fps for one second burst. I pretty much use pre capture all the time now, hardly ever turn it off so you will never miss any unexpected action. game changer. I set my C2 function for pre capture and I use my mfn button to cycle thru my Custom functions and so I can quickly go into pre capture without removing my eye from view finder in less than second. Works awesome, then if I don't need pre capture I go to C1 or C3. So fast and easy and if your using you mfn button to cycle thru them you never have remove you eye from view finder.
@@ericvaughan11 I just did some more non-scientific testing. I photographed my iPhone with the stopwatch running, trying to briefly press the shutter button when it reached 5 seconds. Results: H+ (set to 30fps): Captured 21 frames, covering 4.57-5.25 seconds H (set to 15fps): Captured 18 frames, covering 4.05-5.18 seconds Continuous Low (set to 5fps): Captured 17 frames, covering 2.06-5.28 seconds So it does appear to capture about 15 pre-capture frames no matter what, with the amount of time covered depending on the frame rate. The math works--at 30fps I got about 0.5 seconds of pre-capture, 15fps was double that, 5fps was 6x. ETA: Since you mentioned shooting at 20fps, I hypothesized you're getting about 0.75sec of pre-capture frames. Test results: 17 frames captured, covering 4.26-5.35 sec.
@@wanderland_xyz So I have no idea what your talking about here, doesn't make any sense. I was referring to pre burst only with 1 second burst as the common. Not shooting 4-5 second burst. With setting of 30 fps would get 15 pre and another 30 for total of 45 for one second burst. Remember pre burst you're always getting an additional .5 seconds worth of images shot. Call Canon and ask them.
@@ericvaughan11 I'm saying that depending on the frame rate, you're NOT always getting 0.5 seconds of pre-capture frames. At 20fps you're actually getting around 0.75 seconds, plus however long you continue to hold the shutter button. Do with that what you will.
About pre-capture. I don't use a button at all for me. I just enable it and let it stay that way. I use back-button focus with the AF-On button. So, when I want it, I simply half-press the shutter button and the camera starts buffering the shots. If I don't want to use it, I simply don't half press, I full press the shutter button and the camera goes straight to firing. Pre-capture only engages when you half-press. A full press skips pre-capture. This works great. I keep my camera at 20 fps, so by default the pre-capture works with that fps. However, I have a boost button, the ln-fn button on my 200-800 and 600F4, so I have that set so that upon pressing that ln-fn button, the fps jumps to 30! Now, you can half-press (with the ln-fn button pressed) and you're buffering at 30 fps. I hope this answers your question about another way to set it up. Oh, you don't get a lot of files..that was a myth that got started before the camera even got released. It only buffers when you half-press! If you fully press the shutter button it won't buffer at all! Come back to Georgia and I'll drive down from SC to show you! :)

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video! And yeah, that last bittern encounter was definitely awesome, and one of the few times the R7 really came through for me. That really is a decent camera, especially paired with that lens. I'll keep trying for some updated bittern shots though.
@@BrentHall Agreed! I use the R7 with the RF 100-500mm as my primary birding set-up, and it's a mind-boggling combination for reach and image quality, especially for the price. But your R5 II is making me envious 😀

Your video now has me thinking I should change my plans for this evening from going on a hike to going down to BDA! Your lizard is a Greater Earless Lizard. Also, as regards precapture, I've been leaving it turned on all the time. Since I'm a back button autofocus user and because precapture is initiated by holding the shutter button half way down I can chose wether or not its active by wether or not I half press the shutter button before taking pictures. If I want precapture I half press, if not, I just press all the way down without a half press. I got the idea from another RUclips channel and it made sense to me and has been working great.
BDA is one of my favorite places on earth. I’ll be back in mid November but this time with the Mark II and RF 200-800. I always enjoy watching you birding adventures but especially at a place I know so well.

Nice Rufus!! I saw one post that claimed there was always 15 pre capture images regardless of frame rate ??? In other words it's 1/2 second at 30 and 1 second at 15.. say it isn't so???
The file naming for videos is not optimal, to say the least. It makes them alphabetically before all the photos, and I've had that same problem and thought no photos were taken. Now I know to look at the file number in the upper right and if it's really low, I know it's not showing the new photos I just took. Love that rufous hummingbird tight shot! Word of warning...I just broke my memory compartment door on the MK II by lightly bumping against a metal pole. Hopefully that's a freak accident. I was able to continue using the camera for the rest of the day after sliding the door back into place, fortunately. It's going to Canon to get repaired. Luckily I bought CarePak!
Don't even worry about it man. If you took my R5II away and told me I could only have my R5, I'd be totally fine. It really is still a great camera, especially now with the price dropping.
