Mammals and Owls is the winter photo game in and around Ottawa! River Otters are a fun challenge! They absolutely adore snow and ice it seems... It's an odd challenge getting settings right. Your camera is telling you it's got tons of light, but you're trying to balance the bright snow and a hyperactive playful, oily black creature sliding down banks Few tricks... early morn for sure, but during a melt week look for them to be digging out hibernating frogs in a water bank.... and look for their little ice holes where they pop up to eat the fish they caught
@DunrobinOntario shhhhh he doesn't know about the Snowy Owls yet!!! He is going to be like a kid in a candy shop if we get a year like 2022 (last winter was terrible in the east end)
Yeahh, It realy feels like dead of winter now. I was today in 3 location close to Ottawa and it's soo quitet. Cool idea to switch to mammals. Hope we will have snow soon🤞 Cheers! 🙌
Thanks mate, great to hear from you and yes mammals will be on the cards, lots of early mornings and late evenings for me! Think we've Snow on Friday and -17 next week! Yikes, but will be good to get out amongst it. Cheers R👍
Another great Saturday viewing! We have a storm this weekend back here ! So just great to follow you on this adventure feels like I’ve been out with you !! Bang on !!! Can’t wait for your mammal posts in the future!! Thanks so much for Richard ! Take care 👍
Lovely stuff. I've been stuck, unable to get out with the camera, for a few weeks now so this gives me my badly needed 'fix' :) Thanks for the great watch!
Hey Mike, Sorry to hear this, I hope you get out soon! So glad it helped you get a small fix but there is no substitute for the real thing. Cheers Rich 👍
Hi Richard wow that was fantastic watching that Heron was amazing, listening to the Canada Geese just amazing, that is one big Beavers 🦫 lodge, wildlife is never guaranteed , my wife and I visited a new area took us four visits to get to know the area and it certainly paying off now, I got my first photo of a Pochard duck, like you once said it’s not always about photos it’s just being there with nature, fantastic video as always Rich thank you for sharing it with us.
Yeah, they sure do Peter and the wildlife is playing hard to get but that's Winter for you and you did tell me it will be much quieter on the birds front compared to Toronto, still it's great to be out regardless of results. Cheers R👍
Hi Richard, looks like very normal result for this time of year around here 🙂 Really awesome to see that Northern Harrier there at the end. Beautiful!! Birds of prey are my favourites!! Yes, it is amazing later, when the snow is on the ground, to realise just how many animals are around us leaving their tracks behind. You just don't get that same sense at other times of the year..
Lovely video! I gotta say i love seeing the 1dx or any dslr come out in your videos. I still really enjoying shooting them despite owning an r3 as well. I apologize if you have covered something like this in the past and i missed it. Would you consider a tips and tricks series specific for wildlife? For example, how to go about locating certain species or techniques for photographing bird in flight in wooded areas? Look forward to the next video 👍
Great stuff! I have just ordered the first of my images on canvas and I can hardly wait to get it back. It just happens to be a coyote peaking through some leaves. That looks like a great place and I would love to have that 1Dx iii. Thanks for sharing your day with me!
I'm sure you'll have lots of success this winter around the Ottawa area, everybody always does! I'm around the Peterborough area and have to get out more myself. With less foliage the owls should be soon easier to see, in fact a Snowy Owl was around here a couple days ago which is a bit early for them, but it shows that animals are on the move!
Thanks Josh, I'll get right on it! We have Moose 25 mins from my house but they are very elusive indeed, will certainly try my best and find some. Cheers Rich 👍
Top Drawer ... Q The Harness you're wearing . Does the Camera / Lense attach to the harness by the Tripod mount ?? . Is it secure enough to cycle with , Jog/ Run ??? .. Does the Shoulder hurt after a while trekking about with the Camera / lense attached ??? Cheers .....

Great video Richard and pictures. The one with the dark sky, the black and white pictures were really good.
Would be good to see how you scout areas of woodland out....and what backpack(s) you use and how you pack etc.
Thanks very much, great to have some feedback here and I'll certainly do one if not both of those soon. Thanks again. All the best Rich 👍
