- Two men have been sentenced to life in jail for conspiracy to murder, after repeatedly stabbing a teenager and leaving him to die in the street.

James Bascoe-Smith was just 17 years old when he was assaulted in south London, an entirely innocent victim caught between two gangs.
James' mother said no sentence could make up for the devastating impact the attack has had on their family.
We spoke exclusively to James and his mother.

I broke down in tears watching this. A young man lost his life and will never be the same mentally or physically. The knife crime in the uk is absolutely horrendous and they need to welcome back the death penalty. I can't even look at his before pictured without breaking into tears. Life is so unfair. There needs to be better care given to the disabled. As a parent, I would he depressed because what will happen to my kid if I'm not alive?????

The death penalty would do more harm than good. The attackers have families as well and are most likely raised in troubled homes. These people need help and you should get your local MP to create or increase funding to support groups.

I remember being shocked that a person could stab another person. It's not just the young lad who loses his life, the ripples of pain to far and wide. It's a disgrace. I'm fed up of the criminal lording it over the decent majority. And I'm not alone. Has to stop.

I went to secondary school with one of the people who stabbed him (Taiquane Lewis), he was kicked out from our school in year 8 for bringing a knife into school.

I saw a protest in Parliament Square of families who had lost young men and women to knife crime. I talked to police officers on the square, who were dismissive and alleged that the deaths were mostly down to drug deals that had gone wrong. It's inspiring to see so many young black people, who were the victims of knife crime, go on to do great charitable work to help prevent similar episodes in future. Thank you for this report.

It’s absolutely crazy what happened to him. Intensely saddening to see. I think we drastically underestimate and ignore the perils of knife crime in this country because most of us aren’t caught up in street violence. We’re very look the other way in this country.
The two who did this - although failed by society (their parents, schools, local and national gov, the police, and so on) - needed putting away for life imo. It’s truly sickening what they did. Life destroyers. Complete life destroyers.
I cannot stand law precedence. Just make new laws that offer whole life prison for acts like this.
Obviously, this not happening in the first place is a much more appealing future, but until that day comes, I don’t see much more discouragement than whole life prison sentences for murder and serious violence. People don’t think - and they’re invariably quite thick - so these crimes won’t fall to zero, but what happened to this kid is so horrific that I just can’t accept anything other than a whole life term as justice.

@@KeithRingo The UK already bans all bladed instruments and anything that is specifically made as or carried as a weapon outside the house. If you carry a stanley knife in the UK you will be arrested and could get a mandatory prison sentence. The UK is pretty much the only place in the world that does this. It clearly doesn't work as the UK still has some of the highest violent crime in Europe. Take were I now live Austria. We don't have any laws whatsoever about knives, you can carry what you want as long as it's concealed in a bag or pocket. Our violent crime and murder rate is under half that of the UK. If you look at the knives used in murders and violent attacks they are not knives that are easy to carry everyday, they are large kitchen knives. Try carrying a large kitchen knife in your pocket all day without hurting yourself. Criminals are setting out from home to commit murder (or picking the knife up from a hidden place) they are not just carrying them around. The UK needs to stop obsessing about the tools and start working on solutions to the social problems. But unfortunately banning things is sooo much easier than actually trying to tackle the reason.

With the benefit of hindsight, I sincerely hope that lessons will be learnt this time and knife law enforcement procedures will be reviewed thoroughly and vigorously to ensure that this doesn't occur again on UK soil. Prayers, vigils, resolve and meaningful dialogue.

@YesTube Guns aren't banned in Britain. There are over 2 million firearms privately owned in Britain. Including several thousand hand guns (held under section 5 of the 1968 firearms act) mainly by vets (human dispatch) and ex security staff. Also hand guns are totally legal to own with a simple licence in Northern Ireland. Also Northern Ireland has several thousand PCW concealed carry permits for hand guns. Britain has always had licencing but you could owned a AK47 or AR15 until 1987 and there wasn't carnage before then. Also look at the EU. The vast majority of EU countries allow hand guns and semi auto rifles. The Czech Republic a country with about a quarter of the violent crime of the UK per capita even has concealed carry of hand guns with a shall issue licence. Hundreds of thousands of Czechs are carry guns everyday without any problems whatsoever. They have even changed their constitution to guarantee the right. Next time you visit Prague ask someone.

I don't think they're trying to imitate Amercians. All over the world, they are the same London, Paris, Berlin, LA ,NYC. It just seems to be their culture
