I’m no Apple fan, but when Apple works very hard to maintain independence from Nvidia, then that’s just fine with me, regardless of the reasons behind it. This will encourage development of non-Nvidia approaches to the GPU/highly-parallel-computing software stack, which is a good thing to see and could help a healthy, competitive market to develop. The current de facto standard of CUDA is controlled solely by Nvidia.
We need to learn from history: once upon a time, most of commercial computing, at least in North America, was tightly controlled by IBM. IBM had zero desire to develop standard approaches to anything; they wanted control.
Today, Nvidia is similar: they control CUDA, and the hardware that uses it, and have zero desire to see industry-standard approaches develop which they do not directly control.
We need an industry standard approach to the highly-parallel computing done with GPU-style processors, just like we have an x86 standard today for CPU’s. This helps keep greed in check (well, mostly) and keeps prices competitive.
This would put a stop to “The more you buy, the more you save” nonsense.

Of course, some you can't avoid (I'd call rent, the electricity bill, etc, "subscriptions"), but without an attitude of restricting those, eliminating those non essential, or which can be replaced with stuff you already have, or smart one-payment-only (purchase) products - better if good deals- going full-on for subscriptions is money down the drain, constantly.

Feels like... seems to me they're debating internally if keeping doing mechanical switches with "programmed obsolescence", that after a year or so go the way of the Dodo, or if that can end up biting their behinds due to the increasing social (and institutional) pressure to reduce e-waste (or some other reason). Or jump into the very greedy wagon of subscriptions, that investors so much love, and consumers usually hate.
Or... that new tech (optical switches, etc) in competitors is making mice survive more time than usual, now. And as they can't stay behind, they are also implementing it. But that goes against the fabulous business models printers had for decades (still going) : They don't mind the printers' cost, the business is in the ink cartridges. If they'd provide ink that lasted more, that didn't dry that fast, that did not get stuck so easily in the conducts... they'd earn way less money, and making the products more similar to those physical products and machines of the 50s and earlier, that lasted a very long time, does not multiply benefits as much as powers that be want.
So, maybe... just maybe.. They might have realized the subscriptions is where the money is at, so they'd get the money from there instead of forcing the obsolescence so much, as some people is swapping to other brands due to it, too. Well, they will still do it, just not so much. They'd then earn the good name of having solid mice (or maybe the plan is replacing them when they get broken, included in the subscription), and yet get their profit multiplied by many factors. Which is what the board of investors only care about. A trap for the consumer. You from then have a permanent monthly payment more, which they can raise whenever. Removing freedom in operation, too.

Steam deck screen thing - so if they're supporting 3rd party replacement screens, does this mean they'll support higher resolutions on external displays?
Not saying I need 4k 240hz.. but like some games just have massive UI on small resolution.

  • @__-tz6xx

The minimum specs for a computer which I would build is that it has to have at least 12 cores without hyperthreading, has to play all modern games at above 30 FPS at 1080p, at least 32 GB of RAM, and 2 TB Main OS drive. I hope Nvidia's future premium PC handheld console would have all those specs and have dock to connect to it and SD card expansion.

    • @kenshinhimura9387

why 1080p? that is ancient and outdated resolution. Most gamers are on 1440p now. 4k is too hard to run.

Doesn't look good for Intel lately; they announced layoffs today. Can the same problem occur with AMD cpus as what is going on with intel cpus lately? I know the 7800x3d cpu I have must be below a certain voltage and I don't overly overclock it and run with memory ddr5 @ 6000.

Having to coin a "forever mouse" to sell that as a feature under a subscription model seems like an admition that all their other products are or will be inferior. I don't understand the market need for a forever mouse, I don't think I've ever once had to replace a laser/optical mouse and I've never spent more than $50 on a mouse and I've never needed software for it either. Having a mouse that costs the same as a custom keyboard is insane. With companies constantly moving to subscription models but failing to actually innovate just means customers ultimately end up with shitter products, while leeching money off customers without actually providing anything valuable.

I wish that they would sell compute units in an open compute economy instead of gatekeeper stuff. I wish computes were like money and the provisions keeper agnostic. Like an internet network of resources and payment processors to manage their use. Like I think I should be able to own some resources in my own garden and invite or offer out stuff.

Where did Logitech get the idea that the “average” price for keyboards and mice was $26? Looking on their own website at their own keyboard prices, and they have 1, maybe 2 keyboard models that are below that point. Most of them are double or higher.
I didn’t look at their mice, but I’d imagine they’d probably similar.

Most Logitech mice don't last more than 1-2 years before the mouse wheel packs up. Sometimes less than a year like the G703 scroll wheel which I have already burned through 3 mice.
So the "forever mouse" is almost insulting, considering Logitech mice don't even last 1 year by experience for heavy users, people who use their computer daily.

I might consider a "forever mouse" if the concept was a $200 valued mouse that I paid a small monthly fee for (peripheral as a service?) and was able to swap to the latest updated version every couple years and had a forever warranty as long as you're paying the subscription... This concept of paying for software updates on an already premium priced mouse makes no sense. If I pay that much for the mouse, I better keep getting software updates for free for 10 years.

What functionality could there be that a software update would give?
All meaninful advancements in compute mice have been in hardware not software. So a optical sensor replacement but that will require them to open up the physical device thus a hardware change and not everyone has the tools necessary to open then close and seal a mouse.
