Small detail about the frontman, aka player 001. In the second game, he actually use his right arm for tossing the spinner thingy the first couple of tries, and the left arm when succeeding effortlessly. Its a small detail, but it shows that his desperation in the games is fake. He is not afraid he might die, he is confident in surviving and playing his role as Gi-huns friend. All his frustration when he doesnt succeed in making the spin thingy spin is completely fake, as when he use his left arm he does it flawlessly.

in the carousel game, the front man has to split off of the main group to find a group all by himself since the group size was 4. once that round is over the number of players remaining was 165, not divisible by 4. it is divisible by 4 with a remainder of 1 though. i think the front man just got into a room by himself and wasnt killed for breaking the rules.

i understand your complaint about the 2nd game for the new season, but as a korean i recognized all of those games immediately: they were all traditional korean children's games, just like the namesake of the series.
i think the series shines most if you grew up with the games: its a twisted, dark take on korean kid games, where usually you do get a punishment for losing (벌칙) but this time, instead of smthng innocent like a flick on the head it is death.
edit: feels weird to have to include this about a series exploring corruption of innocence and society as a whole about *south korea*, but when i said these are traditionally korean children's games i did not say they are specifically and originally korean.
if your country has similar games that's great! but squid game was always meant to be a deconstruction of korean culture, including its children's games. this means that a lot of the games you are seeing on the screen are in reference to games that korean adults will recognize playing growing up, including me.

It's not about the games, I know some of those games and I'm Moroccan. It's the fact that the deaths weren't even focused on, it was basically a montage with a silly childish song, it took out the stress from it.
The next game had a children's song and it was horrifying, seeing everyone frustrated and terrified and chaotic, that really hit well!
I also think it's because it was played in 2 teams only, and they had an audience cheering for them, it made it seem like it's no big deal and things are okay

It had a sort of slap stick style humor that you’d find in something like demon slayer with Zenitsu. The lighthearted nature seemed super intentional. I found the island subplot interesting because it shows how deep the rabbit hole goes. That even with fully trained militants and a cop who is seeking the truth, the Squid Game has so many on their bankroll that you now have to wonder just how many people are aware that this exist.
like with Seong seeking out the Squid Game, they were fully aware of his objective to find them and gave him constant outs to just live a normal life but he decided to push forward. The world building was actually done in a rather decent manner because it slowly pieces together just how many people know of this "secret" and their loyalty to keep this "secret" going.
And to add to that, the payoff for the island hopping was the fact that they are fully aware that they are seeking them out and island hopping, it would no surprise me if they turned their attempts at finding them out into a gambling game with people betting on if they will find the right island, or how many islands it will take to find the right one and who will die first or if any will survive.
I would also disagree, this season did have a full narrative, if anything it could be the deconstruction of the hero's journey.
-Call to Action, re-entering Squid Games
-Trials and Failure, the inability to save the people he had wanted to
-Atonement, Fighting back against the system only to be shown that he was being played with the whole time and he's gained nothing out of it other than more blood on his hands.
It's a great season that setups the 3rd Season in a very interesting manner because being the only one that they may be aware of surviving the ordeal they may start to think he is actually part of the system rather than trying to break the system. It will be interesting to see what he will have to do to survive now that he's most likely put a huge target on his back because all those lives lost in the last episode are his fault.

Spoilers ahead: I loved this season. It's a lot more nuanced and cerebral then the first season in my opinion. The whole point of the games of season 2 was (somewhat paradoxically) not the games themselves but rather the vote to end the games and also the psychological battle between the perspectives of gi-hun and in-ho. Gi-hun has the belief that people are good and society (constructed and controlled by those at the top) is designed to keep the poor down, while in-ho (and il-nam, the recruiter, and other people behind the games) believe that people (especially those from the lower classes) are animals and that they are just putting people out of their misery. Gi-hun enters the games to prove to the front man that people better than he thinks but in the end gi-hun gives in to his worst impulses. Even though in-ho tries to convince gi-hun to adopt a plan of convincing o voters to change to x, gi-hun instead decides to sacrifice his fellow x voters to have a slim chance of shooting his way into the management room (which, even without in-ho returning to his role as the front man and "betraying" gi-hun, probably wouldnt have worked anyway).
One thing i love about this season is just how flawed gi-hun is. Just like how the front man chides him at the end, gi-hun is trying to play the hero. Instead of finding the front man's brother earlier or bothering the police more, in order to stop the games, he decides to become john wick and is obsessed with being the one to confront the front man and stop the games. He doesn't even let the mob boss confront the recruiter on his own and he thinks everyone in the games will listen to him just because he was right about the red light green light game. In the end he is reduced to nothing but a rabble rouser; he is no hero. This gets me really excited for season 3. Does he follow in the front man's footsteps and become part of the games? Remember that the front man was also a previous winner and he is a great foil for gi-hun. Or does in-ho have a confrontation with his brother and become good?
Season 3 cannot come soon enough. I completely agree with charlies opinion on splitting movies and tv shows into parts 1 and 2 (think harry potter, hunger games starring charlie, even the last mission impossible). It just leaves a lot of points unresolved. I think a lot of the criticism season 2 gets will be resolved by season 3.

Good observations but incomplete IMO. The decision to sway the vote from within rather than go in guns blazing directly parallels a real-world political debate: change from within the system itself (liberal democracy) vs change outside of the system (direct action, in this case political revolution). This is in line with the series' greater commentary on human nature and late capitalism. In-ho, being an agent of the games, has the interests of the games in mind first and foremost. His concerns do not lie with the players, his goal is to sustain the games at all costs. What better way to quell potential dissent as a secret agent of the system than to insist that real change should only be sought from within the system? In-ho knew that splitting the vote as he did would lead to a violent uprising. He actively wanted it. I think it's fair to say he was not expecting a heart-to-heart with the opposition to actually work.
Gi-hun's methods are questionable, his motives at least somewhat selfish, but painting him as merely a "rabble rouser" who wanted to play John Wick ignores important context. He was in a very unique situation as someone who had been personally wronged by the games, had the means to actually fund a counter operation, and (most crucially) had empathy for all those who died in his wake. Law enforcement had long-since proven useless so there's good reason why he didn't go to them (and based on the established politics of the show there's a non-zero chance it will turn out LE itself is somehow involved in the coverup). He didn't go into the games a second time intending to be a solo revolutionary; he went in expecting full backup from a team of accomplices, themselves foiled by a second double agent in the form of the ship captain. So, cut off from his planned backup, faced with the very real possibility of another day watching others die for the amusement of some rich assholes, why not make a last-ditch attempt to finish it once and for all?

I enjoy the show but it's literally 100% unrealistic.. The whole plot only makes logical sense if police from all over the world have been aware of the games for a long time and look the other way because of the money they receive. Likely the money from VIPS who gamble on the games. When you consider how many young people are guards and how many young players there are in the game, it's literally impossible for police not to have been able to connect the dots all these years to at least realize something incredibly strange has been going on every year. If Hwang Dong goes with an ending like the police were actaully clueless about the games, he literally thinks the average viewer is a complete moron and has 0 respect for peoples intelligence

What I really like too with this season is how the gamemakers basically create a very divisive environment. They split the group in 2, they have them vote again and again, nurturing the divide. they Expect them to fight against eachothers and make sure to trigger the selfishness and gambling addiction in all of them. They give them the tools to fight and will not try to stop it.
And yet, the games are designed in a way that working together as a group boost your survival chances.
They don't play against eachother so far. it's always been games where you had more chance to survive when working as a group. In Mingle, X or O don't matter, better team up with the other to survive than die. In the Penthaton, you better cheer for your partners because their sucess directly affect yours and your chances at succeeding.
I feal it show well this side of capitalism where the system is made to create division and individualism, when individuals usually thrive better by encouraging solidarity in face of hardship.

Most people in X weren't willing to kill in order to survive, not to mention the old lady, pregnant lady and the kind guys not standing a chance against O. If X attacked O first, they would've lost anyway, just because of their low numbers of members willing to kill. We literally see one of the baddest guys from X break down after seeing two people be killed off during their mission. Also they did get very close with Gi-Hun's plan, the reason they failed was because of the traitor.

Those minigames were very old games played during traditional Korean celebrations like New Years. Although they are pretty much party games, the newer generation (like me) struggled to learn how to play the games well. Try that gongi game with the pebbles for your own, and you will see how stupidly challenging it can get for a newbie. Game 2 specifically brought me back to younger times of my life where we were encouraged to participate in those same games during New Years, so maybe its a perspective thing. But either way thats my overall say, may this comment be swept away in the sea of 3,835 others LOL

I think what he's implying is that the games aren't suspenseful enough compared to the first season. the games where every inch of molecules in your body moves leads to 1/2 of losing your life. take the dalgona game for example in season one, one wrong move and you can lose your life. in the 2nd game's case, you can retry again if you fail, removing that suspenseful aspect.

Someone had wrote this in another comment but the second game was light hearted because the director knows that we know these characters have plot armor and wouldn’t die. Hence why it was more playfully toned and we had more time to see the development between the characters like the mom and son’s group

I’m okay with the games being slightly lackluster because (spoilers) odds are the rest of the contestants left are gonna vote to keep playing. And we know the deeper the game goes the crazier the stakes are. And with season 3 apparently coming out in June. I’m excited

Im glad they went a different direction and continued the story rather than going the easy route and do the games again.
I also like the recruiter just being evil guy. I was expecting him to be an this wise and almost omnipotent guy who is unknowingly tricking people, but he unexpectedly just ended up being an evil guy who fucked with people even outside the game. I wasn’t expecting that.
The key and best way to subvert expectations is to play into those expectations. The front man in the games is a perfect example.

This season was a good follow-up season Imo. The only thing I kept asking myself is why Gi-Hun didn't try to win people over with his money, like: "Hey y'all if you get out, I can help with your debt." Especially with the tied votes. He has the money for it.
    Or maybe I forget something😂
Anyhow, looking forward to the third season. I'm glad they already said it'll drop next year :)

probably bcs a lot of them thought Gi-Hun is a nutjob and they didnt believe his story (even if they believe the story, they all thought Gi-Hun had already spent all the money, they all think like this bcs Gi-Hun is back on the game)

    • @UnluckilyLvcky
      @UnluckilyLvcky 16 дней назад +2

I thought about that too, but let's try to think about it through Gi-Hun's perspective. Throughout the course of the game, Gi-Hun kept going on about how the money he won was "blood money" symbolizing all the participants that died in his game. Sure he spent some of it, but most of it went to the prospect of trying to end the games: firearms, mercenaries, private investigators, etc. He isn't spending it all willy-nilly.
And let's say Gi-Hun does successfully bribe the participants into leaving the game, who's to say that they wouldn't come back? Yeah sure, Gi-Hun probably does have enough money to pay off everyone's debts, but greed can only get you too far (as seen w/ that one guy who had a 100mil debt). We've seen this happen once, and it could happen again. It's not like he could have hired private investigators to spy on each and every one of the contestants into making sure they don't rejoin the game, he already gave up his money for the bribe. Plus, who's to say one of the contestants don't get blinded by greed and try to kill Gi-Hun and take his money for themselves?

    • @LittleSparklingStars
      @LittleSparklingStars 15 дней назад +3

      1. they did not believe Gi-Hun
      2. Splitting all his money, it wouldn't cover their debt.

about the games that people need to realize is that they’re Korean games. Every Korean knows how to play them or at least know them in general. Another thing that people need to know is that this is a show geared towards a KOREAN audience. These games are well-known and nostalgic for Koreans, reflecting the show's focus on cultural heritage. While some may see them as simplistic, their inclusion aims to evoke nostalgia and showcase elements of Korean tradition that resonate deeply with the audience that grew up playing with them. Imagine a game from your childhood that you played with friends, and now imagine that same game but with the Squid Game twist. It’s much more fear inducing to watch your favorite characters struggle in such a simple game that even you yourself has played before than some random made-up game that you have to understand while watching the show. EDIT: I am also a Korean myself, having played all of these games in the show in its entirety with friends and family members and let me tell you it’s so nerve-wracking watching some guy get shot just because he doesn’t know the strat to flipping a frigging paper square.

I saw a lot of people say they thought the front man was becoming good and that's why he was in the games. Honestly thats the stupidest thing I've ever heard, he KNOWS gi-hun is planning something, and he killed (to his knowledge) his own brother. There is no redemption for him. It was obvious he was tricking them the entire time

What didn't make sense to me is why he waited so long to take action. Does he just get off on fucking with people lol? There was no reason to cut it that close/self-inflict that much damage at the end. Why was he even in the game to begin with?
They'll probably explain it in S2, but I don't think it's insane for people to begin thinking he is changing his views over the course of the game.
