I unapologetically love this film.
When I think of cats evolving. Red Dwarf is the only thing that comes to mind. LOL
Man, Wing Commander was like my favourite movie when it came out. It might have helped that I didn't even know it was based on a video game until years later.
Punk Rock Zoologist
1 year ago Same here too. I love watching Wing Commander, especially because it has some really good Human and Kilrathi ship designs and also EPIC Space Battles.
I still haven't played the game. Movie still holds up, though. It's better than 90% of the crap out there
This was a really enjoyable movie. Bought the dvd when it came out so still watch it periodically. Go storyline, pretty good acting, and the graphics were decent for the time.
I like the movie too. A lot of the space ship effects were actually done using miniature models instead of cgi. Thats why the effects look good.
The movie sucks and failed in many areas such for ex.casting and screenplay
@@ssdivizion Honestly it sucks no worse than the original Star Wars personally. He throws a lot of shade at this film for a lot of dumb reasons. For example, sound in space. Do you know how often Star Wars breaks the sound in space nonsense? Let alone Star Trek. So he gets mad at this film for lets say breaking that immersion when every single Scifi Film series has done the same, let alone TV series. I can only remember Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 having no sound in space a few times. But not scifi space opera war films.
Bitches about the acting, oh boy, Mark Hamill isn't exactly the best actor.. at least when he played his most iconic role as Luke Skywalker. Though personally Mark did improve over time, when he wasn't favored by Hollywood on the small screen so to speak in TV shows and video games. But as a young actor he's no better than Freddie Prinze or any of the cast from Starship Troopers and I make fun of the acting in Starship Troopers all the time, but I don't hate the film for it, let alone I don't hate Star Wars because I feel cringe at some of the dialogue, especially A New Hope, which if I exclude Disney Star Wars, to me the 3rd worst film in the franchise, even below Phantom Menace.
Basically I'm generally just dumbfounded by people's negative reaction to the film. Often finding strawman like complaints so they can shit on it, that other more renown films are often just as guilty of. I mean how often does Star Wars speak of a planet or race that we never get to see on Camera? Quite a lot. It's just filler dialogue. Yet he comes around complaining about exposition that tries to explain the universe the film is set in which isn't filler and is honestly a bit less offensive as at least exposition doesn't intentionally waste your time unlike filler. StarWars handled it's Exposition with a Title Crawl. Does that make it any less guilty?
You're obviously not a sci-fi fan or just don't have a clue what a cool sci-fi movie looks like, this movie doesn't suck at all, just read some of the comments dude, it's awesome and there's no need to get on the toxic hate bandwagon!
It does not to the Wing Commander games justice, but one thing it did was to get the music in the movie just perfect.
One thing that is pretty funny about this movie is Blair and Maniac as besties, when in the games they could, on a really really good day, tolerate each other.
Matthew Lillard & Freddie Price Jr were like Corey Haim & Corey Feldman.
It seemed like they did everything together.
They did, beginning earlier that year with She's All That, and then through most of the early 2000's.
You know these two were in scooby doo right?
Everything...
@@Lucky_Chase Somebody should already start uploading the BEST scenes from this movie like the EPIC Space Battles, emotional scenes, and also the BEST part EVER (which is my Number 1# favorite scene in this movie) where Lt. Blair tricks and destroys the pursuing Kilrathi Flagship, the Snakeir-class super-dreadnought KIS Grist'Ar'roc into going into Scylla.
The actors in She’s All That is a legit list.
I always felt embarrassed to say I liked Wing Commander. But I played the PC games from the very start, lucky enough to have a CPU and graphics card that COULD, in fact, run the games smoothly. Also, i was a huge fan of Calvin & Hobbes, feeling that Hobbes was named more for the comic than the philosopher.
I've always like Lillard, but Freddie, not so much.
I thought the movie was faithful to the game, allowed the romance we all wanted in the game to evolve, and they used the effects created by Space: Above And Beyond, which are clearly CGI, but cool given the limitations of the time.
And the character actors playing so many supporting roles like Paladin, was cool as shit.
Ok... I admitted it. :)
I honestly feel present day Freddie Prinze Jr. would have been perfect as Blair. His work on Star Wars Rebels shows how much he's matured as an actor.
I loved this movie as a teenager....still do. But in could be the Safron Burrows factor. Music was top notch.
So THAT is where they got the idea to reboot the Klingons without any hair!
I just watched this movie tonight and I love the "Laser Quest/Ricochet on xbox" 90s aesthetic of the movie. It's an okay movie but for a pure nostalgia flick.. I'd give it 110 percent.
Maaaan!!! That is the kind of nostalgic that isn't even cool just yet. This will be talked about on RUclips a lot in the next twenty years.
I loved this movie as a kid. But then again as a kid you could slap Wing Commander on anything and I've love it.
I am weirdly fond of this movie, and Saffron Burrows was fantastic.
Best part of the movie was the opening cinematics and the theme that went with it.
Still, one of my guilty pleasures, despite it being horrible.
Fully agree, love it! Watching Humanity expand throughout nearby space, filling it in with the old school navigation notes and labels, and with that incredible theme by David Arnold.
What I couldn't understand was why did they redesign everything. there was a certain standard for the way the ships looked from the scimitar to the Excalibur to the rapier We had a certain expectation on how the ships would look. It looked so weird so alien I think that's why it failed.
Don't worry, the Pilgrim-Storyline is new to this Movie. The Games didn't have it and were all the better for it.
Still, I sorta kinda like this Flick. It is by no means great, but a nice little film nontheless. Well, except those Kilrathis... they looked like Shit in '99 and they still do now.
It's all Fluffy's fault!
They looked better in the game. LOL
This is one of those awful movies that if I start watching I wind up sitting thru the whole thing. Not sure why it's really bad but I'm a sucker for sci-fi
I think they incorporated that from the books but I'm not sure which ones talked about it, I never thought it was a bad sub-plot but obviously the way they played it out in this movie says otherwise.
The Kilrathis were still more believable than Freddie's "acting"..
I liked this the first time i watched it... until the cat aliens showed up. the fight scenes weren't too bad.
bluemonkey223 I suppose the fight scenes are better than they usually are for a movie of this budget, but they were just monotonous for me. They all looked and felt like the same scene, with no visual indicators or upping of the dramatic stakes that would help distinguish one dogfight scene from another one.
I actually saw this movie in the theaters, both for the "Phantom Menace" trailer and because I was a fan of the games. I walked out wanting to play the game and purge my memory of this disaster.
When a movie has a worse cast, worse acting and a villain that doesn't look as good as FMV's from a video game that was around 5-6 years old at that point, you know you've screwed up (also I love how they flipped Paladin and Angel's nationality while keeping their names the same). And the worst part is that this isn't some director who knows nothing about the video game: this was the creator of the game making this travesty (oh, speaking of Chris Roberts, how's that Star Citizen thing going?).
Oh, that Pilgrim backstory has nothing to do with the games at all. It's also the unholy love-child of the Spacers from Asimov's "Robot" books and the Spacing Guild from Herbert's "Dune" that was thrown into this mess for pretty much no reason. It might have been interesting, except like everything else in this travesty, it couldn't deliver.
I'd still say Star Citizen is a scam. It's been in development since at least 2011 and it hasn't even come out and here it is 2022.
@@Sean12248 I love the shit out of Star Citizen and I don't think its set to release till 2027. The tech to build the game has to be built and holds the game from development. Like for example right now they they are working on server meshing in 2023 and once that is in they can add the other star systems they have been working on. Once that tech is in the game then capital ships can be added. Still in its current state I have more fun than any other space game I've ever played. WIN WIN for me.
I enjoyed this movie immensely! But to be fair I was like 10 when I saw it.
It still holds up
7:05 wrong thinking there. just because sound doesn't carry through the vacuum of space doesn't mean it couldn't be detected. Ever heard of an interferometer?
This movie is one of my guilty pleasures. Lol
I remember people paying to see the Phantom Menace trailer and then leaving before Wing Commander even started.
I actually liked the movie. Sometimes you want something that is not a thinking movie and just have fun.
I think I enjoyed this movie more then I should have because I used to play the game first with my older brother, I miss our LAN parties.. 😜
As a "Wing Commander" player in the early 1990's, I was just as disappointed by what game maker Chris Roberts did to this tale. (By the way, the Kilrathi of "Wing Commander" 1&2 were large Tiger-like sentients who regarded Humans as "no more than prey.") This was back when the AdLib soundcard delivered the best sound and just before the Kilrathi "got to snarl insults" at TCSN pilots in Wing Commander 2. Do you want to see if you're Terran Confederation Space Navy material? ruclips.net/video/mfRvCSBD4q0/видео.html
Then there's "Wing Commander 2" (with Speech Pack) with snarling Kilrathi, insults, and semi-interesting dialogue. ruclips.net/video/oI__AnRDHQE/видео.html
I recall reading that the Kilrathi bore striking similarities to Larry Niven's "Kzin/Kzinti": larryniven.fandom.com/wiki/Kzin
Imagine thinking Chris Roberts had any fucking input in this movie's direction.
@@ronpaulssecretaryUm, this was Chris Robert's directorial debut in film.
@@dtester "The story was told in such a way as to imply that it was series creator Chris Roberts' story. In short, it turns out that's not the case. Chris Roberts saw our post and was kind enough to follow up with his own story about what really happened."
Chris Roberts admits he had no control. I didn't say Chris Roberts didn't direct the movie. I said he had no input.
"We were running over budget and I gave in to Todd Moyer on a couple of areas that in hind sight I wished I hadn't - one of them was the Kilrathi."
"But we were over budget so I gave in on Patrick (a big regret of mine) and Todd found a small house in the UK with nowhere near the creature experience of Patrick that said they could do the work for $200K."
"The movie wasn't the film I saw in my head."
He clearly had no input and Fox and Todd made all the calls.
@@ronpaulssecretarySure, I believe that. Most directors never have full control.
That said, saying he has no "no input" is a bit of an exaggeration. He obviously did have some say.
I did find that article of Chris Robert's take on things. Three things that I noted:
1) he thought the script was ok, implying that he accepted it.
2) He admits it was his mistake the world did not match the game
3) He admits being a new director lead him to making bad decisions.
These are things that were within his "input" power that he dropped the ball on.
@@dtester you are naive if you think just being the director meant he got to decide how this film turned out
I was always confused why Chris Roberts changed the look of this film from his games. Directors have a hell of a lot of control over the look of the film. Why he changed the look and even different music from what was in the games. If he had kept continuity between this film and the games it would have done a lot better.
The look on Freddie Prinze Jr's face during the jump point at 10:10 really says it all. Completely blank. Does he even know he's being filmed?
Hey, anyone remember that bit in Lost In Space when the Jupiter II went to hyperspace and everyone froze in time?
I don't laugh. I never laugh. This review made me laugh.
And yet you still live.
It's fascinating how Chris Robert's managed to make the movie to the video game a worse movie than the actual video game. Wing Commander IV had the better actors, better story, better writing, better costumes, better ship design, better music, better everything. The only thing missing was Jürgen Prochnow, who instead starred in Privateer 2 (another Wing Commander-related Game by Erin Roberts, Chris Roberts' brother), together with Clive Owen, John Hurt, and Christopher fucking Walken.
You forgot to nation the silliest moment in the whole movie. When Rosie's space ship is pushed off the edge of the carrier and falls straight down. Despite the fact that they are in zero gallery in space. The audience broke into laughter at my screening.
Never heard of artificial gravity or magnets? This movie isn't perfect, but it's still better than Phantom Menace
Landing deck has artificial gravity, obviously, with enough momentum it gained by being pushed off by the tractor it just flew off the side where there's no need for artificial gravity.
It's nothing really new, it's been done in Star Trek and numerous other sci-fi shows.
Hmmmm...for what it's worth the scene at 2:35 reminds me a bit of 'BSG: Razor' when the Pegasus was trying to escape from the Cylon attack on the Scorpion shipyards.
Never played the game, loved the movie, great capital ship battle.
“Instead of casting Mark Hamill, you replace everyone with the main actors from _She’s All That!?_ HOW DO YOU F**K THAT UP!!!???”
-Spoonyone
It's been 20 years, I think I'm finally ready to watch this atrocity.
I watched it at the cinema and then on DVD years later. I enjoyed it both times. Taste in movies is certainly subjective.
Wing commander is 1 of my guilty pleasure
I loved Wing Commander 3 which I played on a low cost previously owned 3D0 purchased when PS2 was the new hot system. I made sure to watch it in theaters.
It's basically the Hollywood adaptation of Yamato 2199
Not gonna lie, every time you have an MST3K joke, I laugh so hard. But another great video Jesse!
"Maybe if I played the games I'd be more invested."
Here's the thing. None of the mythology introduced in this movie, like the Pilgrims, has anything to do with the games... at all. It all just came out of nowhere to turn a simple World War II in space story, but with alien cats instead of Imperial Japanese, into a confusing and poorly made Dollar General Star Wars. In other words those of us who were fans of the games were even MORE confused than you were. That's how inept a filmmaker Chris Roberts is.
This is the only movie I’ve ever walked out of the theater for. The last straw was the Kilrathi reveal.
I haven't watched Wing Commander in so long, I had forgotten how awfully not good it is.
Did anyone else spend the first 45 seconds of the video going "wait, did Luc Besson direct Wing Commander...?"
1999 - What a year. Seems weird how it got so long ago....and sad.
I haven't seen this movie since the early 2000's, and the only thing I really remember of it is that scene where the ship freezes in time when they go through some wormhole. So say shit about it if you want, but I guess it left an impression on me.
Hard to compete with Star Wars and The Matrix.
Freddie Prinz Jr. always looks like he's thinking something really stupid.
This is a fun movie actually. I say give it a go if you haven't seen it.
By the way that's not Jason Alexander. That's renowned British actor David Suchet. I hope that was a joke.
So they pushed Rosie's fighter off the deck instead of towing it back trough the shield? Aldo why did that wreckage drop like a stone after it was pushed? It was in zero-g..
The ship generates artificial gravity, there's a bubble of up and down surrounding the ship.
I remember seeing this in the theater for the first time and it felt like a gut punch. I was a HUGE fan of Wing Commander and was very Invested in the story and his characters. I remember playing wind commander 3 for the first time and my parents had to run upstairs and find out if I was OK because I was screaming at the computer when my wingman decided to betray me. when you have a game whose Dramatic cut scenes included the likes of Mark Hamill, Malcolm, McDowell, John Rhys-Davies, Tom Wilson, Jason Bernard and many other incredible actors and had a deep mythology, had a deep storyline to it, it was amazing. Chris Roberts shot himself in the foot. He tried to change what was essentially Top Gun In space Into a more dramatic Dos Boot in space. And it was terrible. I THINK Roberts got mo ey and Hollywood got him thinking he should bw more "artistic" II couldn't believe what I was seeing. I felt so betrayed. Anybody who watches this go back and watch the movies of Wing Commander 3, Wing Commander 4 and tell me That is not an absolute, better production as far as character drama. And everything else it was amazing. They do not make games like this anymore. I wish they would have full Filmed cut scenes to this caliber I. Modern games. SPACE COMBAT sims is a unfortunately dead genre. I am so excited that Chris Roberts is finally returning to his roots and his decades-long commitment to making star citizen a reality. And when it's completed, I will spend my money to get a system that will run it. But this movie was a travesty. It was somebody that was handed the reins to make something incredible and wonderful. And for some reason, decided the amazing intellectual property that he had created was somehow not good enough for the mass audience, and it is a crime that Wing Commander has slowly died. It is a genre of game and the quality of storytelling and many games. Now we are sorely lacking.
Boy were you wrong about valerian
Funny people complained about Episode I until Kennedy showed us what true Star Wars trash looks like.
Kilrathi! I guess "Murderevengi" was too on the nose?
Haha!
I remember when mum rented this from blockbuster
Genuinely funny editing and review. Still gotta watch this movie ironically someday.
I never played the game but saw this movie when I was 9 it holds a special place in my heart. Mark Hamil's best non original Star wars is in the b movie Slipstream
Given the terrible films current being served up for our entertainment, this might be worth going back to.
I saw it in theaters with my friend and mom. Good times, lol
Still waiting on a 4k Criterion of this
I feel compelled to give a (defense?...no, that's not exactly the right word) of this movie.
While the effects have aged somewhat badly (I personally think they're fairly good, all things considered), they were impressive for when this movie was produced (1999). If you go back and look at The Matrix, its effects are also dated, though admittedly less so than WC's.
The casting is shockingly impressive. David Suchet is a SERIOUS British actor probably best known for portraying Hercule Poirot. He was (and maybe still is) in high demand up until 2018. David Warner is an absolute icon and his filmography is about as long as The Great Wall of China.
Jürgen Prochnow, while less known, is still an intense actor and was, as JoBlo mentions, Der Alte in Das Boot, the captain of the German sub. He also has a miles-long filmography. Tchéky Karyo is another classically trained actor and a household favorite in France. Many will know Hugh Quarshie as Connor MacLeod's immortal friend, Kastagir and, if not that, then probably as Mustafa Kama in The Crimes of Grindelwald. Interestingly, he was also Captain Panaka in The Phantom Menace.
Saffron Burrows was already a rising star by the time WC came around. She's probably best known for undressing into her skivvies in Deep Blue Sea, but most recently appeared in Mozart in the Jungle. And we all know about Matthew Lillard's and Freddie Prinze, Jr.'s resume. While I'm not a huge fan of either one, I was rather impressed by Lillard in the House episode "Larger Than Life", where he got to exercise some rather decent dramatic chops. And Prinze is currently a fan favorite for voicing Kanan Jarrus in the Star Wars CG series, Rebels.
The story is, ehhh, okay, I suppose. I've never played any of the games and the current controversy surrounding Star Citizen makes me wonder about Chris Roberts as a person, but at least he tried to some degree for the movie. And when you think about it, he was a surprisingly good first-time director of a major Hollywood production ($30 million). While it isn't great, I'd probably give it a 60% on the Tomatometer.
That's pretty much right. I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10, which puts it out of my Theater Viewing grade and makes it a TV-only movie, but I'd also have to give it a separate score of 4 out of 10 or maybe even a 3 out of 10 due to how poorly it either followed or used the source material. - The property deserved far better.
@@blazerocker1734 Well, "other media" properties rarely survive even remotely intact when transferred to the silver screen. Since Chris Roberts seems to've had total creative control over the film, I can only surmise this was the direction in which he wanted to take the franchise (for better or worse). Not having played any of the games, I can't credibly say if he was inspired or off his rocker.
It's really not that bad of a film if you can overlook whatever crimes were perpetrated against the source material. I can see why people devoted to the games would've been upset, though, as I've watched the cut scenes from the later entries and they're quite engrossing.
I only played the first Super Nintendo game, which was around five or six years prior to the movie's release, but even I knew they weren't following the source material as closely as they should have. I was a little upset that the fighters they were calling Rapiers looked almost nothing like the ones in the game. If the producers had either stuck closer to the property or they had simply removed all ties to the property and called it something else then the movie might have done better in theaters.
This movie is better than those fucking horrible Disney star wars movies.
haha love this movie but you are not wrong about that cruise tooth there
At least we got Wing Commander. I threw $250 at Star Citizen 8 years ago as a fresh-faced kid in his 20s and am now a jaded vet in his 30s waiting for...Something?
I like the Wing Commander movie and love the Wing Commander games
Disney should remake the Wing Commander movie SAGA.
As bad as this film is, I consider it one of the best video game movies out there. This shouldn't be considered a praise for it, rather a criticism of all the other ones.
This is a four year old video but its worth mentioning that all that “pilgrim” shit isn’t in the games
Aw, I love Wing Commander. You get a thumbs up for your majestically massive cat though.
I loved the games, and liked the movie as a popcorn Saturday afternoon sci-fi show. It wasn't great, but it is no where near as bad as half the sci-fi, or is it SyFy, I have seen over the last decade. Need I say Sharknado, I, II, III, IV, and on and on?
This had me rolling
Any movie where the space fighters guns yell “kill kill kill” every time they pull the trigger is a good movie .
6:57 .... "Das Boot" .... I died :(
I'd rather watch
WING COMMANDER
for 24 hours
than any of the
MATRIX movies
I'd rather watch all of those rather than any current gen Marvel movie.
Wing Commander is a very cool movie, don't know what sci-fi movie you were watching, just wish the Blu-ray didn't cost a small fortune!
That's David Suchet, not Jason Alexander
Truly a movie with no redeeming qualities, which as a fan of the games was a little heartbreaking
Saffron Burrows' voice sounds almost exactly like Daisy Ridley to me.
I just don't understand why they did not take the story from the first game and the actors from the third game instead, and did not keep the original designs of the iconic starships and fighters that players flew when they first played it... I mean, the nostalgia alone could have paid off so much more than what they attempted here.
I really think the actors used in the games should have been the ones in the film.
This film is just fun.
Wing Commander "director" Chris Roberts was not a director, but it was his baby and the cast and crew got paid.
His lose.
This was three years before Scooby Doo.
There is a whole subplot involving a traitor that was left on the cutting room floor. Disaster movie.
At least Episode One had LIGHTSABERS!!!!!
No Jason Alexander it’s David Suchet
This is a fantastic movie, full stop. Come at me!
I would say for the record I really like the movie in in the games if this movie want to do a reboot of this movie. Be great also
I have no problem saying I love this movie.
And I wish MORE space combat movies were made today.
I'd probably love it if all that Star Citizen money had been spent on a Wing Commander film instead.
Bruh, the Red Fox reference has me dead
Nope, the pilgrim crap wasn't in the game, we were all super confused. Also confused because the fighters did not look like the space craft we had been piloting for years at that point.
I love! Love! This movie. I do not understand the hate at all. Awesome aircraft carrier pilot drama sci fi.
I liked the movie, the story is a solid cowboy style.
I came from the video but stayed for the jokes!!
I always liked this movie. It was fun and had potential.
Jan., 18, 2022
Seei g how I reviewed this movie three months ago. I guess all I can do is reaffirm that it’s a fun sci fi movie that gets a bad rap. Definitely more than worth a watch.
The only thing i really hated with the movie was the fighters. WW2 style fighters dont work in Wing Commander imho. Otherwise i thought it was fully serviceable if not truly great.
Wasn't Casper van dien in the game too?
yea your right, i swear i remember him being a new recruit/ rookie pilot in wing commander 4
Most people I knew went to Meet Joe Black to see the the Phantom Menace trailer.
I came into this movie having not played the video game, I liked it.
Ashamed to say I actually paid to see this movie in theaters. *face palm* speaking of Freddie prinze jr. disasters, you should review Delgo
Evan Adams Oh God, I remember DELGO. That flick was a big source of mockery between me and my friend in college. I'm sure I can find some excuse to review it in the future.
The Kilrathi, and their warships, were the upside to me. I only watch this film, from time to time, because of their space battles. The kilrathi, would be better used, as a new villain in the Halo universe.
Oh lighten up
LOL I Love the descrip. Classic....I liked it back then....not now
My reason to watch this nonsense 4:20, fit British bird that was also in Deep Blue Sea. I'm a simple man that likes looking at nice thing's.
II DIRECTx II Yeah, that's where I remember her from! I was wondering the whole time where I'd seen her before. I see on Wikipedia that she got married to her girlfriend a few years ago and they've got two kids. Not saying that kissing Freddie Prinze Jr in this movie had an impact on her heterosexuality, just throwing it out there.
Jesse Shade Wait Burrows is a lesbian?!
Neo-Xgray87 Bisexual, actually, but she's said she prefers women over men.
Jesse Shade yes because an extremely good looking guy like FPJ , would make anyone go lesbian. 🤦🏿♂️
