- Planetary Scientist Dr. Dan Durda visits professional model builder Sean Sides and his near exact replica of the Original 1977, 5-Foot long version of the Millennium Falcon. This model is built to the precise specifications of the filming miniature as it existed before it looks today with the added landing gear bays and other modifications. Sean built this model from scratch from over 7 years of research and 2 1/2 years of construction.

44-Years-Later the Falcon is still the coolest Hot Rod Spaceship of all Cinema.
That is humongous, kodus to all the original modellers from the 70s, truly a work of art. Great job Sean recreating it, a labour of love.
Many thanks! Appreciate that and indeed was a labour of love!
Sean sides...the legend..a god in the model world. Youve been very inspirational through the years.
Awww Shucks ;) Very Kind!! Thank You!
This is a masterpiece. The amount of work and precision is unprecedented
That is VERY KIND! Thank You!!!
@@squaremodels1725 how much does it cost?
@@der-Troet A LOT! Just the kits alone are on the order of $10k USD, add in materials and maybe 1500 man hours. Whatever that number is, is the cost. ;)
It belongs in a museum
I've gotten the chills several times just watching this about the recreation of the M.F. knowing that a life-size ship exists, and that it's absolutely possible for me to see it... well if this gives me the chills, I better have a thick parka on if I ever see the full size replica in person.
Kudos to this guy. The fortitude it must take to get this from the idea to what he has here.. it's beyond uncommon to take on such a daunting build and see it to completion. It's incredible. Knowing how difficult it's likely to be, knowing that many of the parts are absolutely Unobtainium, yet taking on the challenge regardless.. it's very inspiring.
Wow Roger, that was incredibly kind!! Thank You very much for that and I'm so glad you understand how much work went into this!
This belongs in a museum.
so do you
Thanks, someday I'd like to get it on a temp museum display.
"It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, she'll make .5 past light speed, I've made a few modifications myself."
- Han Solo
This is remarkable! I know he still has work yet to do, but there’s a detail that I’ve noticed in this, that I have not noticed in others… the paint jobs, that when something is red, they paint it red. However, he has finessed the subtlety that it’s not a blatant color, it is subdued, it is weathered, and it is a lot more subtle. The finetooth comb that has been put into this paint job is absolutely mesmerizing!
As for the detail and greeblies This is a master study in detail.
Bravo, sir.
Very kind comments Dan, THANK YOU!! I really appreciate it!
Impressive. Most impressive.
Very Kind! Thank you!
My favourite line
Incredible! Beautiful work. I could look at that model all day. 😍
Thank You Chris!!!!!! Never gets tiring for sure!
Luke: “What a piece of JUNK!”
Leia: “You came in that thing...? You’re braver than I thought.”
Me: “Gorgeous. Absolutely GORGEOUS!”
My jaw was on the floor for this entire video. "This is not a replica, this is the Falcon". What a stunner! I typically prefer the blue engine light, but when he fired up that white engine light I turned to jelly and all my childhood came rushingback at me. I feel like any compliment I give is an understatement, but fantastic job, man. Fantastic job!!!
That was incredibly kind of you to say, Thank You!!! Yes, it definitely brings back those childhood memories every time I look at it!! Lots of work, but makes me feel young every day! ;)
That is a masterpiece of fan art ,when I was in high school way back when I had a millennium falcon hanging over my bed imagining I'm flying through the Stars. This is awe-inspiring, great work👍
That is very nice of you to say! Yes, it definitely brings back great memories when I was a kid also!!
Thanks
Sean
I got goosebumps looking at it. It's beautiful.
Thank You!!
Simply mind blowing work. Congratulations on a fantastic build.
Thanks!
Man. The dedication to detail! That is incredible!

Great video Sean, I really enjoyed seeing the Falcon in more detail and the chat/tour of course!
Thank You Mike!!
Sir, congratulations... a lot effort and details in that model. Simply Beautiful!!!

The Force is STRONG in this one.
That is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!!! I have seen the original model kits, and yours looks just like the photos I took. Just AWESOME!
Thank You Jeffrey!! Really appreciate that!!
The amount of detail and dedication is incredible. Truely a labour of love, I'm sure. Beautiful piece!
Really appreciate that Kevin!! Yes, it was absolutely a joy to build!! And rewarding for sure!
OMG! this is beautiful! freaking outstanding model work!
That's very nice of you, thanks!
The Force is strong with you, Master Sides! Absolutely wonderful. Congratulations!
So much appreciated Noxxtromo! Thank you!!

Hey Jimmy!! Thanks a bunch!!
Words are not enough to describe this!
THANK YOU!!
Absolutely impressive !!!WOW...
Oh man, that's a thing of absolute beauty.
Thank you!
I want one please! 10/10 for dedication to detail and skill, you're a master modeller bravo 👍
Thanks Arnold!! Yeah, I'll never do that again!
You can feel the love for her in the work he put in. Pure awesomeness.
That is very, very kind Kristopher! Thank you!!
Wow, that is outstanding! Excellent masterpiece!
Thank you very much!
Outstanding job. There needs to be an hour-long video of nothing but an ultra-slow orbit and pans around and across this beauty when it's done. Upclose and multiple distances with all of the running lights on.
Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thanks! We'll be making a 'professional video' later in the spring! Stay Tuned!
Stunning work.
Thank You Dan!
WOW! This is amazing!
Absolute master. Beautiful.
Thank you kindly!!
you deserve way more subscribers, awesome work 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Incredible. Well done Sean
Thank You Blue!
I must watch for all fans of star wars ..fantastic work. 10/10.
WOW, Thank You Ivor!!
Beautiful, a true art piece.
Very Kind! Thank you!
Amazing work!
Thank you!
Wow! That thing is awesome! You did a great job! I can only wonder what it’s like to see that person. I have a falcon that I’ve been working on a 1:58 scale MPC version I’ve had for over 30 years. I will be adding details, such as lighting and detailed cockpit, as well as both gun wells from 3D printed parts for the scale. I cannot wait to finish mine, but yours is absolutely beautiful! The fact that you got to meet the model makers from the original movie is a dream! Way to go!
Thank You Dennis, very kind!! Good luck on yours, just enjoy the Journey!
Most beautiful replica in the world.
That is VERY VERY Kind rb82, Thank You!
Amazing!!! Thank you 🙏. Gentlemen
Thank you Michael!!
A masterpiece. I'm super jealous that you got to meet the original special effects crew.
Thank You Maximus! It was the most amazing experience to meet and talk with them for sure. Truly awesome!!!
Thanks!
Sean
I know it's a copy, but if the original is not available, this is the kind of model that should go into the Smithsonian alongside of the starship Enterprise from the original Star Trek.
Thank you very much ThommGB! Big Compliment!
Wow!!!! That is fantastic
Thank you! Cheers!
Absolutly stunning.
Thank you!
Astonishing.
I've seen and recognize a lot of details the original has, in that jewel of a replica. I've seen pictures of the original (and read about it's construction) for hours, and you nailed decals, colours, the dirt techniques, pieces, and SO MANY accurate small chipped spots, impacts, and small marks the original has.
You deserve a prize for that work of love and devotion. Thanks for showing.
Just as a contribution. It seems that the not so dark umber around the inspection holes and all over the shell comes from so many manipulation, and not from airbrush.
I have to ask: where does the blind grid for the engine coolers come from? Theese are key features you achieved perfectly.
Greetings from Spain.
Hi Jorge!! Thank you very much!! Yes, I really did my best to replicate every little detail. I used chalk pastels with a fine brush in addition to airbrushing, and some oil washes also. The Engine Coolers are a vintage product called KoolShade. The current modern product has wider louvers, so you'd have to find stuff from the '70's.
Incredible.
Thanks!
Smashed my nose on this video right now! WOW!!! Mind blowing not only the stunning final result... but in the first place... the whole story of all the hi-end model making... kit-bashing... painting... wethering... technics that can cover the 99,99% of all the "amking tutorials" on YT. Man... you are a genius!
Where can i find the full photos portfolio of the "making of"...'cose i thing that can be the most inspirational source in all the www?
Hello Guttalaser! Thank You! Most of the build/making of is here: www.therpf.com/forums/threads/5-foot-falcon-replica-anh.282530/
I'm working on another video that will show a lot more info and details soon! Thanks! -Sean
Incredible
Love the jet fighter decals.
Yeah!! There are a lot of really funny 'in jokes' with all the decals!
It belongs in a museum! I mean that.
Thank You - yeah, someday I'd like to find a place to put these on a temporary display!
Amazing!
Thank you!
this is more impressive than the Bandai 1/72 scale model! this is amazing and I wish I had one
Thank you, Bandai did an amazing good job with their accuracy that matches this/original!
Sean! This is BEYOND amazing! I can't even begin to fathom the research, patience and painstaking meticulous work you had to inch through!
Any other models you've put together apart from what's on your channel? I don't suppose you're in Los Angeles? Send me a PM as I have some noteworthy info to share with you that you would get a kick out of.
Glad you enjoyed it Dan! Thank you! Yes, I've done dozens of studio scale replicas in Star Wars, Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica! Can't seem to find your IM or email address. You can email me at squaremodels99@gmail.com.
@@squaremodels1725 Thank you Sean!! Will do my friend!
This deserves way more, and I mean WAYYY MOREEEE views! What a beautiful Peace of Art!
Thank you very much!! That is very kind!
She may not look like much but she’s got it where it counts kid I made some special modifications myself so you all just please come in and jump on board - Han Solo
Amazing sir....
Thank You Roy!
Wow. Love your work...love your room the paint on the walls the panels at the end of the steps....just awesome..(did you make or buy those btw my husband wants those) truly amazing piece of artwork. And do it however you want 💯....like exactly the way you did it. 🙄
Hi Ghost Mail!! Very kind of you, Thanks!! Yes, I made those panels, just had them laser cut out of acrylic! Thanks for your support!!
im gobsmacked WOW just amazing im so jealous
Everyone needs to watch the video again and try to spot all the other awesome items in the background. I saw:
Darth Vader's Helmet and mini Vader
The Battlestar Galactic
Cylon BaseStar
Captain Kirk's chair
R2D2
BB-8
Tie Fighter
Lots of Storm Troopers
A bunch of other stuff
That place looks like a Sci-Fi museum. We need more videos.
Thanks Billy!! Hope to get some more in the coming months!
wow beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
Very impressive
Heh! Thanks!
This did not seem like 22 minutes.
Well done sir. I'm an impressed and jealous.
As a Kansan I told have liked to see those Kansas plates you mentioned though
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank You!!
Just amazing! Thanks for sharing this! Please could I ask a qu? As regards the gun turrets, was it the whole circular bit that rotates? (Un like the toy where it’s just the gun that moves)
Hi , Thank You! Nope, just the Gun moves, not the whole base, but it's a wild design, it rotates and moves up and down, a pretty ingenious design for the day!
Holy ballora!
on the one hand this is an amazing master piece worthy of the title of a studio model. but on the other hand i think its to take old rare model kits in such large quantity and using their parts instead of using current models of same type
Agree. Especially with access nowadays to high end 4k 3d resin printers and a huge community online with access to any stl.
This is the only way to make an accurate replica!
una verdadera belleza
That’s very very nice YT freighter. How did you paint the black wall with the stars behind it? I want to do that in my basement, too.
Hi Andy! Thank You! The finished wall is even more fun ( I have Tatooine printed at the bottom). It just painted a pure black (rollered on), then the stars were painted by hand brush and an airbrush through different diameter circle templates.
all that's left to do is make it fly , awesome work wish i had the skill
Hah!! Right?? Thanks Stephen!
Let's see more of that Battlestar
I'll see what I can do!
expectacular
Thank you!
Is there a "Champion" sticker on the ship? Incredible build! Any more projects? Thank you
Yeah - a few of them! So many inside jokes they put on the model, and I think I got most of them down.
Thanks
Sean
@@squaremodels1725 some years ago in Houston, TX, a star wars prop exhibit, sort of after or during the Phantom Menace release, featuring lots of stuff used in the movies! Happened to notice a "Champion" (the spark plug) sticker I think on the lower rear or bottom of the Falcon! Thanks
I would like to know did Dan make a Making of video and did you create a list of parts that went into the creation of it?
No 'Making of', but we are planning some neat stuff later in the Spring!
Around 2:42... he should make a second millenium falcon build with that pre-build color scheme
WOW
She is absolutely gorgeous. This was built with love and fine craftsmanship.
I understand how accurate and authentic he wanted to get to the original model. But I feel 3d printing needs to be used much more, rather than trying to source the original parts from several kits. The more kits you take from the market, the less there is for those who want to build the tanks and cars, or even the Falcon. Resin printing has gotten so accurate that you can make the small fine detail gribblies then place them on to the model. Ya, you will lose a lot of the character if you do large sections, you just need to go smaller and make each little part, then that character will come out.
Thanks Bastien!! Yeah, my goal was to make a very accurate "Replica", so I tried to limit 3D printing, in the end, my approach cost A LOT MORE than 3D printing, but I know I have most of the original kit parts on there - makes it very satisfying.
Great detail. What type of black primer did you use? Thanks
Just basic Rustoleum Automotive primer, that simple!
@@squaremodels1725 thank you
Chapeau! Great work Sean. May I ask? What about the finanzial input you had to set up for this?
Hi Cabonid Solo!! Thank you!!! Financial input - A LOT! :) Many years of collecting vintage models! All in, the price of a good used car!
I would love to see some high res pictures of this to admire the details, do you have a Flickr or something?
There's a whold build log history here: 20 some pages. ;)

@@squaremodels1725 Awesome, thank you!
wow
I want to know where he got that big death star portrait on the wall.
I think it was 'Acme Prints'
19:46 He said Hãn. 😏 I bet he calls it the Fulcon too.
This is just beyond insane! Where did he get that huge Death Star poster at 16:19??? That's probably the only thing I could afford in that room.
It was a limited edition print, I think maybe 'Acme' prints?
@@squaremodels1725 Thank you! You were right on the money. lol Out of my price range right now but at least I know where its at. Still amazed at that Falcon.
Wow😲
Thank you!
The Millennium Falcon is hilarious because you can tell the art department still had one foot in "2001: A Space Odyssey" and had not yet fully embraced this new universe. I mean, come on, a radar dish. As the films go on the ships get further and further away from our century.
Dedication to the extreme... Respect!
(Helps to have the funds 😉)
Thanks!! Much appreciated!
-Sean
woah
Please tell me when you turn the lights off those stars on the walls light up.
Ooooh I wish, nope, stars are just painted.
It was stated in the video that the model was (at least partly) based on blueprints of the original, supplied by "a group of guys".
Any links or sources?
I've been working on blueprints of a hypothetical "if it could really fly, how would you actually design it".
Interior structures, addressing interference such as gun turrets and bulkheads, etc.
My drawings are 1:24 scale.
They're based on a mish-mash of online sources, pics from completed models, so on.
Main purpose, functionally realistic INTERIOR.
Eventually will convert to 3D CAD, with possibility of 3D printing.
Would be interested in any assistance or direction.
Great job on the model!
Thanks Philip! Great to hear you working on yours.
I’m on “ TheRPF.com” as T2sides. That’s where the ‘old guys’ hang out.
Sean
"Asteroids do not concern me general,. I want that ship" - Lord Darth Vader
Absolutely stunning and very impressive.
Applause!!!
...but why is there always this think beige rug in certain homes? Lol
Ha!! Thanks Lloyd!
Neat! I saw the construction photos over at modelermagic.com - great stuff!
Thank you Fulcrum!
On the original models, are there decals written in English too?
Ohh Yes, most all are english, from sports car models, planes, trains, ships - it's amazing all the real decals they used!
I wonder if he will make the escape pod from the Solo movie
Hmmmm, I don't think so.. :)
The cone in the dish looks like the third stage of the Apollo.
That's exactly right Michael - it's the 1/144 Airfix Saturn V !
@@squaremodels1725 it struck me as a kid in the 70s having the 1/58 Millennium Falcon. I spent some time on that antenna sizing it down.
