What a sad, wonderful song. "In one of White’s first shows since the ending of The Civil Wars, he did let the cat of the bag telling the audience that the song was about his Grandmother’s conversation to him just after his Grandfather died. Finding that she didn’t seem to be mourning, White asked her why a man who meant so much to him growing up, why his death didn’t cause her cry. Her answer was that she had done her mourning when White’s Grandfather was alive and battling his own demons, and now that he was safe from harm, she had no need to cry."
We still need mourn our loved one's! In my studies of different faiths, I have learned that they don't really teach the scriptures at all! So a lot of people say thete Christian, and that's really great, but hardly any of them know what's really required of the Lord that we may return to him! Tattoos go against the teachings of God, yet many people go and get them, because they don't know they shouldn't! In Leviticus and talks about homosexuality that it's an abomination many preachers today leave that out because they would rather have people attend church then to not come so they just leave it out and then people who attend church don't really know what's required by the Lord because again the preachers that are kind of taking the position of being in charge of your soul are not doing it right for instance it even mentions The Three Degrees Of Glory in the Bible the telestial terrestrial and Celestial are three DEGREES of glory, no one even mentions this, but the Mormons! Baptism by immersion is also ignored and it's in the Bible that you have to have baptism by immersion which means you are completely underwater but the Catholics refused it to do it this way.So depending on someone's BELIEFS, you should worry a little bit!
as someone who just saw this man at a meet n greet, he is just the sweetest, most caring man. his singing in person is even more angelic. i could feel it in my soul. his music comes from the heart. all i want is to give this man a hug.
I wish every JPW song i go to wasn't full of comments about missing Joy, or would be so much better with Joy, etc. Yes they were a great duo, but John Paul is amazing on his own. I'm sure he would appreciate being recognized only for himself and his beautiful, soulful, individual talent. Peace

One of my most favorite songs. Deep and moving. Also speaks to the way people can be a totally different person with their spouse than with everyone else in their life. We never really know the depth and breadth of someone’s inner self, even those we love.
I've just found this song today and I think I've played a hundred times the first 50 years rolled down my cheeks like raindrops. I loved the Civil Wars and I miss their harmony but I love JP we went to the same Catholic school in Loretto TN. I older than him but being from the same home town and knowing all the same people. He's just the best in my book and his voice, well no one can compare.
Hey Sweetheart ......Thanks for being a great fan,and also thanks for your likes and comments under my fan page,i have being monitoring your page, and i can see you're a true fan, may God continue to bless you....
His music was a huge part of my teen years tbh, started with the Civil Wars. Saw him a the Troubadour in LA when I was 16, still the best concert I’ve been to iml. Was like 5 feet from him and then he stayed after the show and I got to talk to him for a bit. Genuinely nice dude

I hope someday that they will find their way back to each other. If not music partners, then just dear friends who took the world by storm. Love this song!
Saw John Paul last night in Denver at the Bluebird (08/02/2014)... there wasn't a dusty corner left in the room... every eye was a pool... he was simply amazing... every heart was shaken, stirred, and laid to rest... I'm not the same person anymore... John, if you happen to see this, sometimes we know what it means brother...
This song hits me hard, every word is exactly how it was and how my marriage ended, and the grieving process that last so long, until the day comes you cry your last tear, and let her go in your heart, even though you didn't want to, and I will allways remember her fondly, and have regrets of whatever I wasn't giving her that she needed, that drove her to another man's arms, I wish her happinness and what she needs, and I to will remember
forgive my curiosity, I am not vietnamese but I am familiar with the culture and names so I recognized it too - but I am confused now, why Celtica as user name? Do you like "celtic" music?
The way he's entering the house is so reminiscent of the 'Poison & Wine' video! He entered the house with Joy then...and now he's entering it alone. Seems almost like a post-breakup muse. But, we gotta remember that JPW was a solo musician before he met Joy; his vocals were stunning then, and they're stunning now! :)
+Tanny H Was definite reminiscent of 'Poison & Wine'. I think he's had a lot of control over the "sound" of The Civil Wars tho, because it's pretty much the same music as when they were The Civil Wars. Joy has found herself and her own "sound". I like her new empowerment of her voice. As much as I love them together, I can't be completely upset over their divorced voices.
Shay Grey Yeah, I agree with that! Though I preferred Joy's slower songs on Venus like the acoustic version of 'We Can Never Go Back' and 'What A Good Woman Does'. As for JPW, I absolutely loved his debut album. I think his voice suits rock/indie music. If he made an album like that again, I'd be over the moon but I think he's not interested in that genre anymore since The Civil Wars. :(
I am so glad he JP is part if the Southern Family project. This song truly deserved to be written and, my oh my, he will never stop astounding me with his pure, pin-point talent. I love this man with every ounce of my being.
This is so beautiful, JPW is such an amazing singer. I can´t help but missing Joy by his side, although, he is fantastic on his own too. I do hope The Civil Wars can reunite one day. Until then, I will listen to each one of them.
I created my own playlist on Spotify - called it Joy and John Paul - when his album comes out I'll add more of his songs but so far it consists of Civil wars songs, her solo acoustic latest stuff and some of his :) keeping the memory alive. Love them both so much - they speak to my heart.
Well Joy's husband was there manager, and he watched there every move, I don't think that there was ever an attraction between them, but the husband thought Joy was falling, for John! JEALOUSLY killed the Civil wars!💔So sad!
This video is absolutely brilliant, and JPW's vocals are completely indescribable and unmatched by any other artist. I long for more from him. I love The Civil Wars, but JP's new solo stuff brings a new depth to him as an artist and I'm just in awe.
Maybe they will see each other, at the music awards and, atleast talk or say Hello, or something! I think them not speaking is pretty immature, really! I heard Joy say in an article that sometimes you have to let people go,and now they both have!💔😂🤣
This confirms by strong belief that John Paul's creativity is THE driving force...love his music so much. I miss the Civil Wars, but I am SO very happy to have JP's music again. I cannot wait to see him in Charlotteville with Lera Lynn, in June, for my birthday. LOVE this man's music. He cannot write a bad song. jmo ~Denise

Joy Williams latest album has gut- wrenchingly sad and hauntingly beautiful songs just like this song about lost love.... are they talking about each other? We may never know. I do hope they can get back together one day, their music was amazing together but they're also really good on their own.
John comes into the restaurant I work at frequently. He's a cool guy and a good tipper. Tonight a coworker who was totally freaking out about him ID'd his wife hahaha. His family is awesome and we are always happy to have his business
A stunning lyrical journey...I thank you for keeping it simple...so many artist rely on boom and bang...they are so removed from their truth...you are clearly present and vulnerable...

Mr. White can certainly stand on his own.... as a true artist and musician. He gently moves us to places in our hearts and minds that bring us depth and meaning. Thank-you so much for continuing to share your talents. God Bless.
beautiful song..bittersweet like life and love..."I will cry for you no more"... and lovely simple setting...I wanna visit the house, makes me think of antebellum south...love can be like a deserted old house from another era, best left behind but keeps drawing you in...uh, just read real story behind song...oh well...
Soulful, beautiful, pure tone, your voice has never sounded better. You have found the sweet spot, the place you were always intended to sing from. Ordered Beulah -- having a hard time being patient. Thank you, John Paul White.
Recently had the privilege of seeing him in concert and he shared about having written this song for his grandmother. Makes it even more poignant. Beautiful song! This won't be on it of course as it is already out but his new album is great, I know because he preformed ever track off it. Can't wait. Just a few more days. :)
What a sad, wonderful song.
"In one of White’s first shows since the ending of The Civil Wars, he did
let the cat of the bag telling the audience that the song was about his
Grandmother’s conversation to him just after his Grandfather died.
Finding that she didn’t seem to be mourning, White asked her why a man
who meant so much to him growing up, why his death didn’t cause her cry.
Her answer was that she had done her mourning when White’s Grandfather
was alive and battling his own demons, and now that he was safe from
harm, she had no need to cry."
thank you!
you just made me cry
This is good. We don't need to cry when someone leaves. They lived a good life and they are at a better place.
Fuck this hit me deep.

Alan Stonecipher Right On Brother !!!
Yeah he is not Johnny Depp anymore
Such a classic southern voice. Full of love, hope and anguish.
So.. .singing the harmony .....can't not
Wow is this real? I don’t how many times I tell people to believe in change
This song brought tears to my eyes. I can't believe i've never heard of this guy before. Amazing song!

My heart just melted! I could hear...like a soft echo in my mind...the faintest harmonies of Joy's beautiful voice.
same her harmonies are haunting every note...
Me too. Been binging Civil Wars for two days and so damn sad...
Is this song about Joy?

Saw that show too! So amazing regardless of the drunken whores in the front.
Sreb there's always "that" crowd lol
oh God help any remotely decent looking male musician out there - those middle aged desperate divorced ladies are dangerous hahaha.
+Sreb there's a fine line between a delusion and a dream... right?

I actually like this version, with just him and his guitar, better than the studio version.
Did he use to sing this with Joy?
He is just beautiful.
Am I seeing a Vietnamese that loves the Civil Wars?
Indeed you are :)
you are so right
OMG, I thought I'm the only Vietnamese one love The Civil Wars :D

This won't be on it of course as it is already out but his new album is great, I know because he preformed ever track off it. Can't wait. Just a few more days. :)
this song reminds me of The Civil Wars :'(
please get back together.
Simply beautiful!
So beautiful!
