I've come to the realisation that JPW was the reason The Civil Wars resonated with me as much as they did. Their harmonies were flawless, but I find his chords and melodies so raw and old fashioned. There's a grit to him which I really like.
This is too true! I was thinking about your comment for the last day or so when I happened to re-listen to some of the Civil Wars. Joy's voice was a beautiful complement to his, but he brought (and continues to bring) that real southern soul to his work. While I find Joy's new work nice enough, it's John Paul's that I want to hear more of.
So I read this comment on another video that explains how her husband/partner was to be the manager or was the manager and was going to take a third cut of the money. So her household would take two thirds and John would only get a third. This in itself makes sense that they split up.
John Paul, you are golden. I want you to know how much your return means to your fans and how much we all appreciate you making music again and taking time away from your family to tour and grace us all. I had the opportunity to see you play and meet you in Charlottesville, VA. Hands down one of the best concerts I've ever been to. You're such a humble, talented man and I'm looking forward to hearing more of your music and seeing you again. Thank you!

My family and I had the privilege of seeing him at the Bluebird in Denver last week. The new album is AWESOME! So excited for its release. I have already pre-ordered it. It was worth the wait while the art brewed. Joy has a great voice but John is definitely the creative genius. Honestly, as much as I loved the Civil Wars, it didn't feel like anything was missing at all. Love his sound. You guys are going to love it! And if you like a unique sound check out his brother and his wife Grace and Tony, its called punk grass and it's awesome. You Tube has the video for November.
Dont get me wrong this is v good, but the whole time I was watching I kept thinking about The Civil Wars and how much I miss them. I miss hearing their gorgeous voices, TOGETHER.. Oh well I should move on with my life now. :(
I hear you but just be thankful that Paul hasn't changed his style and is staying true to it and creating more lovely music with it. I love Joy's voice, but I can not say the same about her style or the direction she has gone with her music.
Melanie- your comment doesn't really make sense in regards to my comment. you are talking about something different, and something loaded with assumptions and opinion. Who really knows why they broke up, and at this point, who cares?
Everything JPW touches is absolute gold. What a beautiful voice. Intense and breathy and controlled and raw, deep and lilting in turns, those soft southern vowels. Hope to see him live someday.
you are clearly connected to a place we only see thru your musical journey..Civil Wars had it time..you continue to grow and thank you for these lyrics...
Best song I have heard in 40 years. i did not know the Civil Wars. I am a master luthier and a customer directed me to the guitar style of JPW. Best music out period.
JPW is backkk!!!!! Yesss!!! My tickets are booked for the Dallas show!!! and I just preordered my cd on your site!!! EAKK!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE AND HOPEFULLY MEET YOU!!!!
of course Joy's voice & the duo will be forever missed, but this is so great. I am covered head to toe w goose bumps of inspiration & I will always be ever grateful for the inspiration I received from the group, but it is so great to know it won't end any time soon if he keeps pumping out greatness like this. we appreciate your mind, your music & the willingness to share such great art w us man. keep em comin brother.
JP and Joy as separate entities are just above AVERAGE it's together where the magic is and they know it, but stubbornness is keeping the world from listing to the best duo on the planet!!!
Marvellous! Pre ordering! Happy that you`re happy. Would love it if you came to the UK again but if not, no worries :) Just keep posting fab stuff like this!

I adored the Civil Wars...but we all have to move on and appreciate JP for the gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist he is. I love this....
Can't stop thinking that He was the magic in The Civil Wars

Without a doubt, he truly was.

Nope have you heard Joy's newest songs? They are as incredible as JP's. They were both equally incredible in The Civil Wars.
no but without him its magic failed to exist, same as her.
I could listen to him all day every day.

I feel the same damn way

Hole in the road
Sun on your back
Shoulder the load
Your ancestors passed
Wear on your sleeve
The virtues you lack
But don't get above your raising
Sell your damn soul
Or get right with the man
Keep treading water as long as you can
But whatever you do
You must understand
That you don't get above your raising
No you don't get above your raising
Cuz it's one for the somber
And two for the stone
And three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate few that don't know
The difference between what should be
And what's so
Reach for the sky
Kneel down and pray
Get in the dirt and
Get out of the way
But don't you forget
'til you climb in that grave
That you don't get above your raising
One for the somber
Two for the stone
Three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate few that don't know
The difference between what should be
And what's so
One for the somber
Two for the stone
Three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate
Few that don't know
The difference between what should be
And what's so

Catherine Todd - Thanks a lot!
thank you!
Anyone still here in 2022??? 😫
I like that he plays his guitar like he's shooting from his hip.
Man, I missed JP songwriting. This one's got the vibe!
I love this kind of dark country feel. Every chord in this song is gorgeous. Need to hear this lovely voice live so bad.
eleanoreandthelost dark country is my favorite country
Now this is some true talent, hard to find talent like this in the mainstream these days.
In both their solo music you see and feel eachother missing something. Forever live the civil wars
Anthony DeRosa yep
Maybe so but you have to let it go. Things change.
He is back! One of my favorite guitar players. Love his style!
I'll put this on while I'm driving to Barton Hollow!
Sam Hurst That was my favourite Civil Wars song - and I love this in the same way.

Saw him in Vancouver last night. He played the entire new album. Very cool!

This silly bastard found a way to hook up his lips to his heart, and I freakin' jealous. I'm still glad I found him.
Infectious, I love this up-tempo song from JPW. The southern nostalgia is haunting and tells its own story. Gotta love him, cant wait for the album.
This is amazing! I hope "Beulah" will be a huge success!

Shannon Lee HE is the one that wanted the change... She didn't. It probably hurt her when she found out he just needed her out of his way...

John staying true....staying magical as usual
It's crazy to see the town where I grew up in a music video. Love this song. I'll be waiting on HOT WAX to have its own music video.
This song just sounds like another The Civil Wars's, i can totally imagine hearing Joy's voice in this song.
He has what others yearn for!
you are clearly connected to a place we only see thru your musical journey..Civil Wars had it time..you continue to grow and thank you for these lyrics...
