As much as I adore the Civil Wars and how tight their harmonies were, there definitely came a point where Joy's voice was so much more upfront than John's. It is so satisfying to finally hear John's music and to hear the music that was the foundation of the Civil Wars.
Joy's voice wasn't "more... than" - it was pushing ahead alone while John just kept his silent mouth open. She is Scorpio and for sure was madly jealous to higher talent.

He is such an accomplished singer. Vibrato, dynamics - and he takes his baritone both high and soft. Super difficult, all the while maintaining a very beautiful timbre.
I honestly love his solo performances. While the civil wars were something beautiful, I'm glad he's moving forward with making something beautiful for himself.
I was JUST listening to the Civil Wars tiny desk performance and lamenting for the umpteenth time over their breakup a few days ago! This is a beautiful and John Paul White is *incredibly* talented. My God.
Thank you so much NPR crew, to let me discover such great artists. For few years now, I listen to John Paul White, The Oh Hellos, Julian Baker, Daughter... and so on, because of you. You can't image how glad I am!
Can't stop watching this video. Such humility and soul in his voice. His lyrics have their finger right on my pulse. Mr. White thank you for sharing your music with this "square peg."
John Paul was the real genius behind The Civil Wars... lyracist, composer, talented enough to engage with simple melodies and a single guitar and THAT AIN'T EASY. Much ignorant hate has been spewed his way... none of us fans knows the real story of TCW breakup... may both Joy and Paul find their separate extacies, and may they keep their story a closely held secret.
I'm not from US, but I share a sentiment for a radio that brings you (especially when you're youngs) music that you could never find in any other way in your small town.
Might I suggest a trade so to speak... John Paul White gets Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice gets Joy Williams. We all benefit from some beautifully, lonesome music!
Marketa Irglova worked with Damien Rice in the last few years, so Joy could go to Glen Hansard and Lisa to John Paul. Convoluted six way shift. Or, better yet, Marketa, Lisa and Joy could make a Telling Tales album...
John Paul White, your talent is so great, your voice wonderfully amazing just alone with that guitar... thanks very much for sending these songs around the planet ... your friends are very talented to .
I may be weird for saying this; but I'm completely geeking out over the harmony lines of the male accompaniment in I Hate the Way You Love Me (such tight harmony)
I didn't know Jack Sparrow quit piratery for being singer? Seriously, John Paul White is sooooo talented, on his own or with Joy Williams (The Civil Wars). I discovered him through his beautiful cover of Between the bar and couldn't do anything but find all the possible stuff he did. What a perfect voice.
So I was there, listening while reading a book, when Hate the Way You Love Me starts - I already feel like listening to some Civil Wars' song - and the chorus starts, there's a female singing and though I know it's not Joy, I just stop everything to be sure that Joy didn't pop up out of nowhere. And now I'm just sad...
truly hate to see how many people are on here just to lament about the civil wars. move on already. JPW is making (and did before the civil wars....) great music. I suppose if RUclips was around in 1970, there'd be people commenting on Lennon videos saying "I WISH HE WAS STILL IN THE BEATLES".
NPR Music and +Bob Boilen, I am grateful for your job. because I discovered such a terrific meaningful music in your videos. This guy is awesome. I am surprised I never heard of him. I want to say my songs are kind of his style so... I'm enjoying him all over the internet searching for his live videos. Thank you
I really try not to, but I cant help imagining Joy's voice in the songs... I guess its going to take some getting used to, but its really beautiful music.
Musicly, the were eachothers other half. It just made sence. You can hear her in these songs of his even if she isnt singing with him. He was the foundation, she was the missing peice. I miss the playing together, but he is still gold.
I kinda fantasize that Joy, in some private moment, has listened closely to Black Leaf and sung a second part.. Maybe JPW has thought that too.. I always thought of John Paul as the fabric and Joy as the thread..
Just saw him one hour ago at Knuckleheads in Kansas City, Mo. was pleasantly surprised. Never even knew who he was, never heard of him. Seems to have a loyal following.
On the second CW album he seemed to mix his vocals lower which is a form of protest..however as much as I miss em I have to tell you that John Paul White's solo show at the Lincoln Center was absolutely outstanding and his band kicks serious butt
Damn I am bummed that the Civil Wars are not together. Don't know what happened...None of my business. But I sure wish things could somehow get patched just for the music. What they had was pure old magic. The once in a lifetime kind.
So does this guy just constantly surround himself with incredibly good looking and talented women? Because Fiddle von Redskirt over there is pretty impressive, and Joy was too. Or maybe they are surrounding themselves with him. In any case it's all working well.
Fiddle von Redksirt! Hilarious! but yes i was thinking the same thing :D oooooh hope there isn't more trouble brewing here with such a gorgeous & talented band member....
I appreciate that the caliber of JP White takes a shot at anything I write, although , as with several collaborations, I’d like to hear a shout out to ‘perhaps’ collaborators.
he is a reaally cool guitarist. i love tcw- i love him and i just picked up the guitar because of the music they play and id love to even be in comparison to him one day
Not sure, but I think it's hipsters. Saw some commenters at AV Club who HATED Civil Wars. And I'm like, "Yeah, but...but...THE FUCKING VOICES MAN!! You Just. Don't. Hear.That. It's magic, unique magic!" And of course, on-tune singing by people with great voices is WAAAAY too mainstream for such folk, leaving them ill-equipped to appreciate the intricate duets Joy and JP wrote for themselves. Ah well, their loss.
John Paul, it will be such an unexpected surprise when you awaken and you aren't sad. Go head first into the pain. Wrestle with the Devil. Always call on God. There's no problem too small. Always remember that your experience is reaching others who are experiencing just the beginning of the same journey.
Ugh I really hate to be this person - I really do - but after years of being a fan and watching numerous videos of him perform, I STILL see him as a character that Johnny Depp is playing. MY MIND WON'T LET HIM BE HIS OWN PERSON
I always thought after so many years, they would have put their differences aside and say...”let’s make some great music again “. Life is too short
As much as I adore the Civil Wars and how tight their harmonies were, there definitely came a point where Joy's voice was so much more upfront than John's. It is so satisfying to finally hear John's music and to hear the music that was the foundation of the Civil Wars.
Exactly

Agree 100%
Him and Joy are both making some great music solo, but I do miss them together. This is beautiful though
Agreed on all points!
They should get back together, make an album and separate after...Repeat!
Yes they were something special
OMG - this guy's voice is something else. I can't stop listening.
His voice is so piercing and robust while being ridiculously tender at times. *swoon* He could sing total gibberish and make it sound stunning!
Hi Lauren thanks for your comments and support I really do appreciate❤️
He is such an accomplished singer. Vibrato, dynamics - and he takes his baritone both high and soft. Super difficult, all the while maintaining a very beautiful timbre.
I honestly love his solo performances. While the civil wars were something beautiful, I'm glad he's moving forward with making something beautiful for himself.
The Civil Wars were amazing, don't get me wrong - but are you guys listening? John Paul White is silk with or without Joy. Other-wordly this man is.
True❤❤❤
He is truly sublime.
I was JUST listening to the Civil Wars tiny desk performance and lamenting for the umpteenth time over their breakup a few days ago! This is a beautiful and John Paul White is *incredibly* talented. My God.
The way he bears his soul... Listening to this feels like reading someone else's diary. There's so much vulnerability and raw emotion in his music.
Thank you so much NPR crew, to let me discover such great artists. For few years now, I listen to John Paul White, The Oh Hellos, Julian Baker, Daughter... and so on, because of you. You can't image how glad I am!
He always makes the most elegant musical choices. Great lyricist as well.
Can't stop watching this video. Such humility and soul in his voice. His lyrics have their finger right on my pulse. Mr. White thank you for sharing your music with this "square peg."
Whys everybody whining about Joy? Johns whole album is phenomenal. He deserves more credit from you people.
THANK you.
Because the whole was greater than the sum of its parts.
The wait was well worth it.
I loved this album by JPW.
My heart is on a mend little by little.
really wish they still made music together.

Yes. All. Of. This.

Pandora does this for me these days.
I was wondering if this would happen. I am so happy. He's amazing. I'm happy he found his way and his music, because this is beautiful.
I don't remember the tattoos. But then he used to dress more formally. I've never understood the point of the "story tattoo".
This is such a wonderful mini-concert! John Paul is an incredible talent on his own.
Civil Wars was a hard act to follow, but John Paul White has done it and done it well. Bravo.
He always manages to get the perfect tone for the song, out of his guitars.
he's just feeling it and fitting the tones as needed, give him any guitar and im sure he would balance it perfectly
He should start a band called The Reconstruction Era.
Eras
The Southern Containments
Great idea!
First song ends and then, boom the band appears! Johns magic at work
I really love The Civil Wars, and to Mr. John Paul White, I really love your solo stuff too!
Just Beautiful. John Pauls voice OMG.
Whoa, no way. Was just watching the Civil Wars' Tiny Desk Concert, to find that this was published as well, today! Excellent
I think he's just as good on his own. Less drama, more real. Bravo!
Linda Bryant
Superb album, balanced and enhanced by his excellent guitar work. Stunning lyrics.
Hate the way you love me is a fantastic song, and live version is even better
steviecbf Agreed! This version is even better than the studio one.
They're so good together, and him alone can carry a note so sweetly sounding.
His talent is limitless!
The aftermath of the war.
Might I suggest a trade so to speak... John Paul White gets Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice gets Joy Williams. We all benefit from some beautifully, lonesome music!
Joel McBride I was thinking he'd work well with Hannigan.
Marketa Irglova worked with Damien Rice in the last few years, so Joy could go to Glen Hansard and Lisa to John Paul. Convoluted six way shift. Or, better yet, Marketa, Lisa and Joy could make a Telling Tales album...
Jajajaja probably the best commentary!
I got into JPW's solo work, including Beulah, pretty recently. He's so damn good.
What a perfect voice.
and backup guitarist from "Workaholics"
Beautiful! So good to hear him with a beautiful set of backing vocalists, the notes that were missing are now here.
Loved his plug for public radio! :)
I love that woman playing the fiddle. If her and john did a duet instead of she just singing backup. Oh that would be awesome.
Really pure and simply delightful.
truly hate to see how many people are on here just to lament about the civil wars. move on already. JPW is making (and did before the civil wars....) great music. I suppose if RUclips was around in 1970, there'd be people commenting on Lennon videos saying "I WISH HE WAS STILL IN THE BEATLES".
I would love love love to see him and shakes graves make some music together someday.
Shakey Graves*
Daniela Ghersi ha! Thanks, auto correct is such a crotchety function sometimes.
That's a really interesting idea.
Always loved his sound nothin like it

I get why people miss him and joy together they were magic, but it must suck for them that all people say is how much better they were together
katrin Yes it sucks because it's true. You only need to look at album sales. Together they were lightning in a bottle.
Musicly, the were eachothers other half. It just made sence. You can hear her in these songs of his even if she isnt singing with him. He was the foundation, she was the missing peice. I miss the playing together, but he is still gold.

Hi Carl thanks for your comments and support I really do appreciate❤️
AI hasn't added her yet?
He's great all on his own!
WONDERFUL. I could listen without stopping.
Rip the civil wars 🙁
He's so awesome.

Clyde Mccray I couldn't have said it better myself. I feel the EXACT same way.😥
We all do...
Yep.

Beautiful voice.
'Good Writing....wonderful voice...I am buying his CD.
the voices married so beautifully
He's still got it!
So amazing
Transcendentally beautiful
Mercy I've missed this voice
Great voice; cool guitar 😌😎🙏
Good god this is perfection

This voice
The real talent of The Civil Wars right here !!!
I love it! Thanks for sharing....
More of that trio!
3:35 is the start of pure gold. that song is amazing.
Beautiful, lovely fall music.
It works for me, the album is superb!
he is sooo good!

Can't go wrong with John Paul White ✌💙

One of the few real Millemianl talents of the 21st Cent. Black Leaf is amazing!
Blake from Workaholics really got his act together
Estevan Phillips glad I'm not the only one that saw that.
Bittersweet... healing us...
Love it! Great Job!

Black Leaf = Joy?
Jim Adlington.. GOTTA be..
Am I the only one who sang along trying to be Joy?
No you are not alone...but that girl sounds a bit like her
lovely....
This is totally about Joy. :(
Come Back Joy...none of us can move on without you
FYI...

Ugh I really hate to be this person - I really do - but after years of being a fan and watching numerous videos of him perform, I STILL see him as a character that Johnny Depp is playing. MY MIND WON'T LET HIM BE HIS OWN PERSON
oh honey...
I totally get that, and I don't know why I can't put it behind me...
ArtificiallyFlavord yeah just a weird thing I got stuck in my head
I think about it all the time, too hehe I mean, how could you not, with their similarities?
Lindsey Holzmeister he reminds me of Johnny Depp's character in Chocolat
John is akin to Southern Jeff Buckley...
His guitar work is definitely underrated, and his voice is one of the best I've ever heard; so yeah
just like Dallas Green.the old martins are all haunted and make beautiful music.kind if reminds me of the movie the red violin.
