16:17 You Brits always keep over praising Sonic to no end, there’s a reason why my parents are born in Mexico, and Mexicans don’t care about your love for Sonic.
06 had so much going for it conceptually. It really could've been the Adventure 3 everyone wanted if it got the time it deserved. At least we have P-06.
I was SO excited for 06. With Sonic Heroes and Shadow, I was getting disappointed with the way Sonic games were going. 06 seemed like a grand return to the Adventure series. It was a big part of why I bought a PS3, my first Playstation console. Before that I had only owned Sega and Nintendo consoles. But I was a HUGE Sonic fan then and I needed to play this. If only they'd given the game more time and polish.
Literally if they had let it cook a little longer in the development it could have been so good. Cause genuinely, the writing is at worst bizarre. It’s not that bad besides the weird romantic vibes between Elise and Sonic, but if they had more time to sit with it they probably would have had the time to sit and go “actually this is weird” and cut it.
Looking at the trailers and demos and reading the stories the devs had regarding the early release, it's clear they were making something incredible that would have been worthy of being Adventure 3.
I loved Sonic and the Black Knight! It can be really fun once you really get used to the sword mechanics. The flow of the stages completely changes once you master short hopping, dash-slashes, and perfect hits on Soul Surge.
If you were a Sonic fan in 2010s you probably remember the days when Unleashed was bashed and SA2's radar stages were absolutely destroyed. Crazy what a few years can do to opinions.
Haven't played through the HD versions of Sonic Unleashed but I can confirm that whoever said the treasure hunting stages in SA2 were bad suffered from a severe case of "skill issue" Pictured: 2010's retro game reviewers
If Ordinary Things made retro gaming videos, he'd be Thomas Game Docs -- and if Thomas Game Docs made essays about world events he'd be Ordinary Things. I adore them both.
16:17 not really a fair comparison. The original super Mario was released six years earlier, on a console 64x weaker than the Megadrive. comparing the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” to “Super Mario World” on the SNES would be more fair
I think the point was more about these both being the first of their respective series, so neither had been able to iterate on what parts the previous games did well or respond to criticism. It's still not completely fair since the NES' visuals look a bit dated and the game could fit far less variety into its cartridge than Super Mario World, but comparing the original Sonic the Hedgehog to Super Mario World also wouldn't really be fair because Mario had an extra 6 years to refine its gameplay and really figure out what his games were all about by the time Super Mario World came around. (by comparison, SEGA didn't really know what Sonic's games should be like in the first game as seen by Marble Zone and the difference in gameplay between its two sequels)
@cantin8697 It absolutely is *not* objectively unfair. And starting your post with a pretentious question makes your whole comment completely invalid. Too bad.
I never understood what was so complicated about the team switching mechanic in “Heroes”. I remember adapting to it quite well as a kid, to the point where it’s kinda instinctual whenever I picture gameplay in my head. And maybe it’s just me, but I actually preferred the Werehog stages in “Unleashed” over the daytime stages. I just couldn’t get into regular Sonic’s gameplay, with the tank controls, the motion blur obscuring most oncoming obstacles, and the homing attack being a separate button. Ugh. By comparison, the Werehog was a lot easier to navigate and the buttons were simple to use. Sure, the stages did drag on a bit, but at least they were playable.
I think the reason heroes was tedious was cuz the differences between the 4 different teams were rly miniscule I also loved unleashed night levels, it's my fav sonic game, most ppl just never upgraded the werehog so it felt "tedious" when it was an actual fun af beatem up
for me i could never get sonic unleashed to run properly on anything!! i could never understand how people loved it when i could only get 2 fps on whatever i played it on. i finally got a clean experience playing the 360 disc on my brother's series x and it's a fine game, but i can't get over how poorly it ran on the consoles it was made for. i never hear anybody talk about it so maybe i just have poor luck.
the main problem with unleashed is that it ran like shit, the werehog was the main complain but i think its just different and its what make unleashed stand out from the other sonic games
Wow. Even as a huge Classic fan, I always thought Sonic CD was overrated but I didn't actually think people would agree overall? #12?????? Lower than Sonic 1??????? Neither in the top 10? I'm shocked! Edit now that I'm done: Placements overall are good. Nostalgia would flip S3&K and Mania placements for me, but I'd vote 5 stars for both.
cds levels are just really gimmicky wacky workbench collision chaos and mattallic madness come to mind as all very annoying. the only fun levek is stardust speedway and mayby quartz quadrant
@@0ttimo way over-hatted, I can’t see the argument against cd not being in the top 5, two amazing soundtracks, some of the best robotnik fights in all of the 2d games, 4 different versions of each act, there’s literally no sonic game like it
I think a significant problem is the level layout design. It can be seriously clunky and anti-speed - not to mention how it can be pretty hard to find a good space to gain enough speed to time travel. The graphics and soundtrack are beautiful, and I definitely had fun playing it in Origins for the first time in many years. Still, it's the layout that deterred me from that game for a long time.
I totally agree with Sonic Adventure 2 having one of the best soundtracks, and who after listening to it could ever forget how geniusly well made and performed that game's main theme song, "Live and learn" by Crush 40 is! What a big-time banger song that rock band made for that 3D Sonic game! I never heard the lyrics of that song in my childhood because back then I couldn't get to the final boss battle when it plays in the background. I only heard the instrumental part of it from the main menu, but I've listened to the full version enough times lately as an adult that I happily have the whole song mesmerized into my brain.
I'm kind of surprised Lost World was rated as high as it was, considering how much people complain about it. I was expecting it to be next to 06 and Rise of Lyric tbh.
lost world was a very polished game. it was fun to an extent. but in general it was more different of a sonic game. if it was under a new ip it probably would have faired better. but it being SONIC, its mediocre nature just isn't great
This but for Sonic Colors. It was praised at the time of its release, but a lot of Sonic fans in the current year rip on it due to overusage of straight lines in 3D sections and repetitive gameplay (that would become even more apparent with the release of Sonic Forces) and the beginning of a sort of downward spiral for the quality of writing in a Sonic game (which, according to fans, wouldn't be rectified until Sonic Frontiers, and even then, a lot of Sonic fans seem to still have gripes about characterization in that game).
I'm glad retro games still get the credit they deserve and I'm surprised young audiences are willing to play the classics. I recently properly played through all the original Sonic games for the first time and had a blast
As someone who grew up with the classics, I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed your first time through them recently! They’re not all perfect, but the love and creativity throughout them is fantastic :)
@@SheerSonic Well to clarify, I grew up with the originals but I was too young to beat any of them. I've been revisiting games from my childhood that I never really progressed in
Younger audiences don't exactly have much to work with from the last decade. Mario's gotten at least 10 sports, party or other types of games since 2010, along with a boatload of mainline entries. Sonic has remained to maybe 10 games in the entire franchise since 2010, & half of them are subpar at best, & pathetic at worst. Your really kind of forced to branch out to the older games, since I feel their better then most the newer titles. Although I'll admit I love Generations, Mania, Frontiers & Superstar, all great games I recommend to everybody who likes the franchise.
@@jeremyriley1238 I'd guess the same. Especially since in the US, Master System was very unpopular (so much so that a lot of people probably didn't know it existed), so many fans would only think of them as Game Gear games. Also you get into a mess of some of the games only being on Game Gear, and regional release differences. Sonic 1 & 2 were on Master System, so include them. Sonic Chaos was on Master System in PAL regions and on Game Gear worldwide. Sonic Blast was on Master System only in Brazil, everyone else got that turd on Game Gear only. Sonic Triple Trouble was only on Game Gear, so that's legitimately excludable under the "home console games only" rule, but then isn't it confusing to see the other 8 bit games there but no Triple Trouble? Easier to exclude them all.
Personally I think he should make a sequel to this video surveying for the most popular handheld Sonic games. Then we could get the Sonic 1 & 2 demakes, Sonic Chaos, & also Sonic: Triple Trouble, the Advance games & the Rush games. Along with some of the other ones, like Labyrinth, Blast, Drift 1 & 2, Colours demake, Generations demake, etc.
I'm so sad I could never play Unleashed as a kid... I got stuck on the third level, in which you don't play as sonic, but you're put in a plane as Tails and have to push buttons in rapid time to keep up with the robots flying at you, and little me didn't have the dexterity to keep up with the buttons... I always wondered how the rest of the game could've been.
I remember having really good memories of Sonic Unleashed. It’s a very interesting game and the Werehog is honestly nice if you don’t mind slower gameplay. I wish they’d port it to PC
I recommend you try it again. My friend and I am about half way through (I think?) of the PS3 version. At this time it's my top favorite Sonic game. Super awesome day time levels with breakneck speeds, and super exciting night time beat-em-up levels! The game is SUPER HARD (at least for me) which I love. The only thing that makes the game a bit hard to put time aside for is that night time levels take about 45 mins to beat for me. But in my mind, it's both good and bad. I love and much is put in those levels, I just wish I could have a temporary save for when I can't play it for 45 mins straight. But that aside, I love almost everything about the game so far. The story is cool, I love the almost open world hub worlds, I enjoy talking to the people who live in the hub world, the levels are awesome, and the graphics are beautiful. As long as you like hard games and both boost style and beat-em-up style gameplays, you will probably love the game.
I can get through it okay since I've developed muscle memory on how to beat it. If you miss too many times, use the shoulder buttons of whatever controller you're using to charge them back up
Did anyone even learn how to play as the werehog? I did and I learned to love the werehog despite being really slow compared to daytime sonic, he still has a lot of things I like from a sonic game like learning to go faster by using shortcuts with the different combat abbilities, I even found eggmanland one of my fav experiences in any sonic game
Same I love the werehog. Also most levels you can go through pretty quickly since you don't have to kill all the enemies unless there's a dark gaia wall blocking you
Doesn't really matter if I learn how to play as the werehog. I still didn't buy a Sonic game to play God of War. I would be just as annoyed with a God of War game that included 3D fast running and platforming sections like the daytime stages in Unleashed, because much like I didn't buy a Sonic game to play God of War, I didn't buy a God of War game to play Sonic.
@@mjc0961 they still fun tho and I haven’t played a god of war game. If its fun than i don’t mind, and it makes it more replayable by having two diffrent drastic game styles
I wish you had showed what the community said for each game instead of just for some and then your own summary for others. i liked that about the mario video. feels like you speedran through this one.
I remember having Sonic 4 Episode 2 when I was younger and having a lot of fun with the 2 levels given for free, but returning, beside the nostalgia I was kind of bored with it…
I actually enjoy the werehog to an extent, the brawler style combat is fun, and being able to sprint is nice, but the platforming segments are too slow and make the level way too long imo, I get it's meant to be slower paced but daytime taking 2-5 vs nighttime taking 10-20 is way too much. Your thoughts?
Not a hot take anymore, thankfully. People finally are looking at it without a '3D Sonic is always bad' lens anymore. The Werehog was always good, just a little misunderstood.
@@rehaansiddiqie MUCH agreed. Sure some more mix up and less annoying BAH BAH BAH BAH- BAH BAH BAH BAHHHHH" everytime enemies appear could be implemented, but I enjoyed the night stages and how chill it was. The MUSIC was outstanding in Sonic Unleashed, I think it's the best soundtrack of all Soinc games imo.
Rise of Lyric deserves to be worst, especially when you search on RUclips and see videos talking about how Sega messed up the game behind-the-scenes by pushing mandates on Big Red Button like forcing it to be a Wii U exclusive, tying it to Sonic Boom, and even telling them to complete it by a certain date, resulting in the game releasing with the bugs that were documented.
If only BRB didn't waste much initial time to make so far character designs that they'd fill for a completly new game heroes, if only BRB didn't force SEGA to stick with WiiU and an game engine with no native support for WiiU (SEGA was ready to wait until Nintendo deal would be done at all), if only BRB didn't do many weird design and system solutions with no sense (eg. forcing to use WiiU Gamepad with no Pro Controller support)... what did you say?
@@MasterAnimit At around the time of Synergy, Sega had signed an exclusivity contract with Nintendo in which three Sonic games would be developed exclusively for Nintendo consoles, particularly the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS due to them just being released. This included both Sonic Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, which both released in 2013 after the announcement of the deal.[26][27] In late 2012, Sega showcased the Synergy demo to Nintendo, who agreed to include it as part of the deal. Sega later announced the decision to switch to the Wii U in 2013,[28] as well as mandating a 3DS port of the game; the 3DS port eventually became Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, developed by Sanzaru Games. Sega of Japan also forced several changes, including altering the character designs to be closer to the originals, increasing the speed, and rejecting the origin storyline.[23]
Not to mention that the chao garden in SA2 was also improved upon greatly from SA1 and provided a ton of replay ability for the game. It’s certainly what has made me keep coming back to it to this day.
Werehog isn't bad it plays quite well for a beat em up. If it wasn't sonic and it was another game I'd imagine it would be a good game. But the problem was these werehog levels were 15-30 minutes long. Although they look absolutely stunning for the time and especially cool edge night and jungle joyride night sonic unleashed had the best graphics out of any game hold me glass 🍷 The daytime.levels which was what people wanted from sonic lasted just about 6 minutes. The day section were the best out of any game but fell flat when about 75% of game time is spent either playing as werehog or collecting medals I absolutely love sonic unleashed tho. I want some real life locations again.
@@ItsOver9000Productions To be fair, as far as alternative playstyles go, the werehog is probably the best one. Sure beats the likes of fishing, treasure hunting, mech shooting and telekinesis.
I've played an embarrassingly small amount of Sonic games throughout my life (partially because I'm terrible at them...), but I've always had a soft spot for Sonic Colors. That's mostly nostalgia talking, mind you; I replayed it recently and yeah, the flaws are pretty apparent, but that game is the Sonic of my childhood and I'm super grateful for it.
Did you go back and play the original Wii version, or did you get Sonic Colors Ultimate? 'Cause Ultimate is a very rough way to play Colors. The Wii version is far from perfect either, but I think that'd provide the smoother play experience.
@@snakey888 It's probably not so bad anymore, but there were horror stories of Ultimate's initial launch (especially the Switch version) that put me off of it.
I think that with shadow the hedgehog I get that people don’t like how edgy it is, but because it’s such laughable levels of edgy I fucking love shadow for that, genuinely that edgy the hedgey personality makes him one of my favorite characters not cause it’s objectively good and a writing masterpiece, but because it’s fucking hilarious and wildly out of pocket I need to see more of shadow saying shit like “it’s like stealing candy from a baby, which is fine by me” because that captures shadow’s insane out of pocket personality that I love shadow to have, because it makes you ask “what the fuck did he just say!?” In a funny way
How to fix Sonic Heroes: You're always in Speed Mode. Pressing the other buttons briefly activates the other modes ability, then auto switches back to Speed Mode. Pressing Fly mode's button lets you hover when the button is pressed, and immediately leave it with a homing dash by pressing the normal jump button. Power mode fires a powerful attack when the button is pressed. Un-clunks the system by only making you slow down as long as necessary, and not any longer.
I think many people dont give the werehog a chance and barely notice how many combos and tricks you can pull off with that play style. Soo the game is fun across the board in my opinion.
its insane because if you play the werehog well you can learn faster routes to beat the levels faster, turning a 15 minute level into a 4 minute one, wait that sounds familiar, almost like a *gasp* sonic game! the same things people cry about with the werehog are the same things people circlejerk over with adventure 1 and 2, but this time with nostalgia!
@@PrintOmnivore20 yeah idk the whole "Sonic games are mostly bad" or "this doesn't feel like sonic stigma" is pretty awkward. Or criticizing something like SA1 which was pretty early on in 3D gaming. Like of course it's rough it's old! And the 3D counterparts to other franchises mostly don't play the same as the 2D ones sooo idk why sonic should do it differently all of a sudden.
@@elibonham4388 it's such a small part of the game. Idk why everyone is pointing out that campaign. Even other beloved games had some bizarre parts. Besides that it's not that hard once you figure out what to do it's over very quickly. My issue is that the game doesn't convey it pretty well when it comes to the controls of big.
Happy new year Thomas, while the mega drive classics are non comparable - give me titles like Colours, Unleashed, Lost World, Forces, and Frontiers any day rather than Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom.
Great video. January 22th will be my yearly day to play Sonic the Hedgehog as it was the very first console and game I ever got for my bday. Trying to play it on a different system every year. This year will be on the Steamdeck! Keep up the creativity!
Yeah saga need to focus on there relationship with nitendo and make a Crossover game with mario a other crossover game cause the winter games was released in 2019
I really wish I knew about the surveys existence so that I could've tried to save sonic 06's rating from being so low. I sound like a stupid idiot for saying this: but we all have our own opinions, and sonic 06 is not a terrible games, it's an amazing game in every way. It's fun, has a good story, nice graphics, best sonic voice actor, Jason Griffith, is in the game, and the pre-rendered cutscene make me wish an animated sonic 06 movie was real. Maybe you think I'm nostalgia taling when I say that this is the first xbox 360 game, first sonic game, and first game I've EVER played, but I loved it, despite never ever beating the first level for 4 years, and even though I'm nostalgic for this game, whenever I try to find the "bad" and glitches in the game and take nostalgia out of my mind, I can't find anything wrong with this game. I've never encountered a single glitch in the game (probably because the Xbox 360 version ISNT a buggy mess, unlike ps3 version), and it's an entertaining game that did so much right, it had good new characters. Really the only thing I don't like is the load times, but that can't ruin a game. If the game was bad just for the load times, gta 5 would be the worst game ever made. I have a hsrd time finding anything to dislike about the game, and I never will find anything bad about it.
Fun Fact : The Devs of Sonic Mania put the dropdash in the game, which the dropdash really didnt come from Mania. It actually came from the Prototype of Sonic 3, which they thought was a good idea to add it, now most of the sonic fangames have it this day
Too bad. Probably would've rated low because of controls, odd 2.5d graphics and lack of real speed because of the first two issues but I have a nostalgia for it and the other Genesis games (including spinball) since N64 and Psx/2 pulled me away from Sega unfortunately.
Honestly for what i've seen the true least popular sonic game is Sonic Chronicles: the dark brotherhood. Almost nobody talks about it. Personally I think this is a shame. The game is underrated if anything. The game has the best story I've ever seen in a sonic game. Pretty good worldbuilding. Great artwork. So much potential and a very interesting battle system which, I know, it has it's flaws, but it was fun regardless of anything.
I really liked the game. The story was pretty good. The only flaws I really had with it was that the battles are pretty monotonous, so every encounter felt kind of like a chore, and the final boss fight was anticlimactic (there are regular enemies that are harder to beat then the final boss). That being said, I felt like those cutscenes were more than worth it. And it's a real shame that the game didn't get a sequel.
@@stevesteve0521 Wow, such a groundbreaking take. (Not that I disagree about the soundtrack - and the gameplay is pretty mid, as I said - but we were focusing on what's good about the game for once. Kind of pointless to bring about the same regurgitated take that we've been hearing since the game came out. If you having nothing interesting to say, then don't lmao.) Also, your argument about the Sonic characters is hilariously idiotic. As it is, the game only makes sense within the context of the Sonic universe - so it obviously wouldn't make sense to replace it with something else. Yeah, it sure would make a mediocre game worse than it is - so what? What's exactly your point? You could literally say the same about any bad piece of media from a bigger franchise. Such a nothing take lmao.
The main reason Shadow the hedgehog was created was bc at the time, ppl wanted to see Sonic (Americanized) with a gun. So eventually sega came up with Shadow, they gave the people wat they wanted, so yall shouldnt be complaining
I'm going to be honest. I think that sonic the hedgehog 1 deserves the ranking. It's nowhere near as bad as the other options and laid the blueprint for level design but about two entire zones of the game go against sonic's design philosophy with their slowness. Although it is a fun and functional game. I feel that naturally with being the first game it suffers from the worst of the 2d series(Slow level design, unfair design, overuse of underwater sections, traps that slow down the game) Literally the second zone of the game contradicts the first zone in every way.
Yeah, while I played Sonic 1 a lot as a kid, it has not aged well for me. Every time I decide I'm going to play Sonic 1 since the last decade, it doesn't take too long after Green Hill Zone that I want to play something else.
5:55 I would like to take a moment to laugh everyone who rated this above Sonic 4 (even with the handicap of the first chapter) out of the room please.
@@clayjp1548nope, because of all the jank. it’s still a wonderful game at parts and i really enjoyed what i played of it but the glitches and bullshit is hard to ignore
Not a huge deal, but Shadow, Secret Rings, Black Knight, and Boom are all considered spinoffs. They are all considered major releases though so it’s fine, just thought I’d mention it
Sonic 4 was supposed to be a mobile game under the name "Sonic the Portable", hence the lacking gameplay, but Sega changed it last minute to be a home console game.
🤓🤓I think Sonic Frontier's score should be higher, because when you think about it, the physics may be a little wonky, but the reused assets were there because of the story, so it shouldn't be something holding it down. The assets were reused because the cyber space was combining with sonic and his memories. The assets were reused because they are part of him, that explains why the death egg is in one of the backgrounds🤓🤓🤓
The weirdest part is the game is still fun everything you said should be a recipe for disaster but I had WAY more fun with frontiers then I should've and I'm not even a big fan of the sonic games I mainly just like the characters and world.
I don’t get how mania is so great, in my eyes, my favourite has to be origins plus, superstars, or frontiers because those are what I call the nostalgia bring back three, because at times, they bring back oG characters, and talk and reference to some of the greatest hits, including adventure 2.
Sonic CD is amazing, its just that ScottSheep cant learn how to appreciate game design OR form their own opinions so they follow the shepherd blindly with wool pulled over their eyes. In fact, before Scott's video and a few other big youtubers' critiques, it was one of the most liked games. And despite being somewhat divisive, it's got a lot of love still
Man, Sonic fans are like CoD fans, they just want more of the same, as can be shown by the fact that the top 2 "Best Games" are both the overall third (or fourth) entry in the franchise and a game that just does the same things the first 3 games did but HD. Meanwhile every single time something truly unique is done it gets criticized, see the werehog in Unleashed or the 2D stages in Colors.
Of course first Sonic game hold up better today than first Mario game since it was developed later with 16-bits. A better comparison would be any Mario game released from the same generation such as Super Mario World for SNES.
i have 1 big issue with sonic generations. modern sonic wasn't fully 3d. it used the boost formula, meaning it was comprised of mostly 2d sections, which to me ruins the novelty of separating the two.
Eh but it wasn't too much like colours, and plus it made it so that the classic fans would more likely enjoy both gameplay styles, and that's also why classic sonics spindash launches him super far almost like how adventure sonic had the spamdash
While i'm happy sega doesn't want to run the same game mechanics into the ground and try something new with each Sonic game, it's so fruststing to watch them ignore what made a previous game to successful
8:13 you might not believe me when i say this, but i called sonic forces when you were about to say it and irl i yelled "LET'S GO!! CALLED IT!! (f-ck yeah!)"
I feel like Generations suffers from the "Too much of this is sort of just okay 2d sections" issue even worse then Colors does, or at least as bad. The "3d"/modern stages still have 2d sections in them in Generations, so it's really only like 1/3 or 1/4th of the game is 3d.
OMG i had no idea that you were trans! 🏳️⚧Awesome!🏳️⚧ As for the list, I'd say i agree for the most part with the community. Sonic Mania is probably the best there's ever been.

If you were a Sonic fan in 2010s you probably remember the days when Unleashed was bashed and SA2's radar stages were absolutely destroyed. Crazy what a few years can do to opinions.
And rightfully so, if those elements weren't criticised, Sega would repeat their mistakes.
Unleashed still sucks.
Haven't played through the HD versions of Sonic Unleashed but I can confirm that whoever said the treasure hunting stages in SA2 were bad suffered from a severe case of "skill issue"

His point was invalid to me anyway because I think super Mario bros is a much better game than sonic 1
There’s nothing unfair about it. Get over it.
@cantin8697 It absolutely is *not* objectively unfair. And starting your post with a pretentious question makes your whole comment completely invalid. Too bad.
@cantin8697 That’s not the question I’m referring to.
I think the reason heroes was tedious was cuz the differences between the 4 different teams were rly miniscule
I also loved unleashed night levels, it's my fav sonic game, most ppl just never upgraded the werehog so it felt "tedious" when it was an actual fun af beatem up
for me i could never get sonic unleashed to run properly on anything!! i could never understand how people loved it when i could only get 2 fps on whatever i played it on. i finally got a clean experience playing the 360 disc on my brother's series x and it's a fine game, but i can't get over how poorly it ran on the consoles it was made for. i never hear anybody talk about it so maybe i just have poor luck.
the main problem with unleashed is that it ran like shit, the werehog was the main complain but i think its just different and its what make unleashed stand out from the other sonic games
The Wii and PS2 versions ran better.

One of the best soundtrack on a Sonic game, also my childhood game played on GameCube and replayed it on PC

Lost World is just Galaxy: Sonic edition
This but for Sonic Colors. It was praised at the time of its release, but a lot of Sonic fans in the current year rip on it due to overusage of straight lines in 3D sections and repetitive gameplay (that would become even more apparent with the release of Sonic Forces) and the beginning of a sort of downward spiral for the quality of writing in a Sonic game (which, according to fans, wouldn't be rectified until Sonic Frontiers, and even then, a lot of Sonic fans seem to still have gripes about characterization in that game).
I know so much bias.
@@bellarosa_ Sonic writing was never consistently good.
The Master System games are missing, Sonic 1, 2 and the elusive Sonic Chaos which I always thought had a phenomenal soundtrack!
My guess is this is due to those games also being on the Game Gear, thus Thomas counted them as handheld games.
The only way I played Chaos was on the Wii shop version. It wasn't great but like you said the soundtrack is 🔥
@@jeremyriley1238sonic 1 and 2 were made for master system first and then ported to game gear so technically not handhelds
If Unleashed was in the bottom half I would have had fighting words (great video man!)
Also justice for the werehog
Werehog was too slow for a sonic game. We're playing sonic for speed, not for a beat-em-up
@@Y_u_dum I was playing sonic because I liked him as a character, not because I wanted to go fast, everyone is different
I hated it but turns out it’s just cause the Wii version is just, worse in every aspect
If you miss too many times, use the shoulder buttons of whatever controller you're using to charge them back up
I'm figuring this out this year. I'm playing all sonic games and reviewing. Pray for me.
How's it going so far?
Did anyone even learn how to play as the werehog? I did and I learned to love the werehog despite being really slow compared to daytime sonic, he still has a lot of things I like from a sonic game like learning to go faster by using shortcuts with the different combat abbilities, I even found eggmanland one of my fav experiences in any sonic game
lol so you’re saying everyone else is the issue and they just don’t get it 😭😭
so, basically, skill issue (I agree)
Same I love the werehog. Also most levels you can go through pretty quickly since you don't have to kill all the enemies unless there's a dark gaia wall blocking you
Doesn't really matter if I learn how to play as the werehog. I still didn't buy a Sonic game to play God of War. I would be just as annoyed with a God of War game that included 3D fast running and platforming sections like the daytime stages in Unleashed, because much like I didn't buy a Sonic game to play God of War, I didn't buy a God of War game to play Sonic.

Sonic with a sword makes more sense than Shadow getting a gun.
Play literally an other JRPG. If you followed gaming publications you know Bioware is full of people on record for hating JRPGs.
Completely agree. Sure the game is heavily lacking in gameplay, but the story and world is seriously my favorite out of any modern Sonic game.
Take sonic characters out of the game and you have yourself a basic mediocre rpg in all honesty and the soundtrack is an embarrassment.
If you having nothing interesting to say, then don't lmao.)
Also, your argument about the Sonic characters is hilariously idiotic.

@@clayjp1548 same, but consensus is that it’s a janky mess with some great parts, or that it’s shit, unfortunately
It hurts me personally that the music for each game is not from that game
Not a huge deal, but Shadow, Secret Rings, Black Knight, and Boom are all considered spinoffs. They are all considered major releases though so it’s fine, just thought I’d mention it
Yeah, feels weird to include them yet ignore the Saturn's offering in Sonic 3D Blast (since it's the definitive version).
Secret rings and black knight stays shadow maybe boom defintley spin off
i personally wouldnt consider shadow an spin off when its a direct follow up of team dark story from heroes
How come people always include Shadow the Hedgehog but not Knuckles’ Chaotix?
can't believe you pronounced it "hydrocity!" everyone knows it's actually "hydrocity"
Just became a patron! Keep promoting yourself, you have a huge audience and you deserve it!
And despite being somewhat divisive, it's got a lot of love still
Im honestly surprised how high on the list Sonic Superstars is
Recency bias.
Undeserved for sure
Sonic Rush and the Advance trilogy are mainline. As Blaze and Cream became recurring characters.
THANK YOU!

3d blast its a CANNON ENTRY
now we need a version of this including EVERY SINGLE sonic game for the nerds
This
@@sonicjhiqno, including the spinoffs, wand handhelds.
i have 1 big issue with sonic generations. modern sonic wasn't fully 3d. it used the boost formula, meaning it was comprised of mostly 2d sections, which to me ruins the novelty of separating the two.
The thumbnail has the Mario 64 box art LMFAO
Holy Crap I just noticed that
Must be changed, now it's Sonic CD
The thumbnail had the Mario 64 box art LMFAO
It‘s back
8:13 you might not believe me when i say this, but i called sonic forces when you were about to say it and irl i yelled "LET'S GO!! CALLED IT!! (f-ck yeah!)"
I knew that Sonic Mania is going to be in first place!
TEAM SONIC MANIA!
Sa2’s reputation really went from great to mid and back to great again
But how is sonic 2 better than sa1?
You mean SA2 or....?
I feel like Generations suffers from the "Too much of this is sort of just okay 2d sections" issue even worse then Colors does, or at least as bad. The "3d"/modern stages still have 2d sections in them in Generations, so it's really only like 1/3 or 1/4th of the game is 3d.
Um, actually you forgor Sonic Shuffle 🤓🤓but for real tho, this is a great video Thomas, keep up the great work!
OMG i had no idea that you were trans!

As for the list, I'd say i agree for the most part with the community. Sonic Mania is probably the best there's ever been.
Knuckles Chaotix is so forgotten that it didn't even make the list
Sonic 1 being higher than heroes and cd is just ridiculous
