This is a bit different from the strategy that I've used to beat Culex at level 3: - No red essences used (I prefer to save them for Smithy) - Mario opens with lucky hammer on the first turn so I can use the egg game to avoid gaining exp and stay and level 3 - Attack with mostly star egg, maybe a couple rock candy at the beginning. Don't bother with energizer/power blast because shredder will quickly cancel it. - Everyone but bowser dies very quickly, Bowser essentially fights the battle himself. I stock plenty of mid mushrooms to keep bowser's hp up as needed. - As the fight drags on, Culex will eventually run out fp, and won't be able to do magic attacks anymore. Once this happens, the remainder of the fight becomes easy. - During the battle, I use pen+paper to track how much damage has been dealt, so I know how many rounds are left. Note that my strategy is not suitable for a speedrun, as obtaining the star egg takes a *long* time, but it's the simplest solution for beating the game at level 3, irrespective of time.
MoogleBoss actually has a run of Culex at Level 3 on the remake. He basically bomb-rushes the Crystals in general to dispose of them faster within the Rock Candy and Red Essence capacities before reviving Peach and Mario to start walling everything remaining better. It's great to know how differently things play out between versions. Oh, and yes, MoogleBoss has his own low level run, though he gave up on Duel Ready Johnny and thus doesn't have an attempt at Culex 3D himself.
I like that it's called ROCK CANDY. Such a cute harmless sounding name for a item that, lays waste to gods lol. Marios got some nasty candy yo. Don't trust him kids!
You might've noticed in japanese its called こんぺいとう. It's a candy similar to rock candy, but shaped vaguely like stars. The animation (and its inclusion in a mario game) make a little more sense from that perspective.
The remake is pretty great! Still the same game with the same personality but lots of little (and not so little) changes to make it its own thing, especially as a speed game!
This is something I explicitly will not do. I do my videos in whatever version of the game I have a more convenient save file in from speedruns I've done in the past. It's too much effort to do an English low level run to get this save file when it's slower by a matter of hours on a run that's already 12 hours long.
No Culex strategy is complete without the best equipment in the game: Work Pants. Nicely done!
This really shows just how broken the Rock Candy truly is lol

It was legit the 90s the last time I fought Culex, and I definitely wasn't level friggin 3, that is wild.
Great video, I doubted if it were possible, but I should have known to trust you, the goddess of Super Mario RPG!
What even is erong with his Michaelphone

Yeah, it's great! I commentated the remake speedrun for the finale of last SGDQ. I just don't play it as much as the OG.
I defeated Culex twice upon the lowest level before, I swear… It was worth the effort!
In the next super Mario RPG they should have donkey Kong or at least lankey Kong
this is very cool!
more spoilers....yes and even lost the double or nothing on EXP!
Thanks Pidge
If you can do it in either version in the future can you do these challenges in the English version version better viewing experience?

@@pidgezero_one yeah that's valid
I wonder if this works in the remake?
This strat will only work in breezy mode, normal mode caps the number of rock candies and red essences you can carry.
thanks!!!
Have you ever played those Super Mario RPG ROM hacks? I use to watch the Boss Rush vids of those alot
I was never any good at them lol
How do you get to level 3? Isn’t monster town half way through the game?
Use the lucky jewel and lucky hammer to trigger the yoshi egg minigame and get 0 exp from it. Look up "smrpg low level" for more info
If you used game genie or an emulator I'm sure you can hack the game to not give EXP
