Kefale Alemu on Arba Minch (አርባ ምንጭ), Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo in the SNNP Region of Ethiopia

This video presents Arba Minch (አርባ ምንጭ), Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo in the SNNP (North Omo) Region Of Ethiopia. The film has been recorded on 8 September 2019 when I visited Arbaminch Zuria, the Lowlands of Gardula and Konso. It seems me that Lake Abaya is shrinking over time. When I did diagnostic surveys from 1991 to 1998 some of the macro islands were not there. I very well remember that in 1996 when walked at the bank of the Lake to observe cotton farms there was only one dot of land inside the lake. Some people even thought that the dot inside the lake was a bird or a crocodile but I new that it was a tiny peak of land with a small shrub. Today that tiny dot of land in side the lake has already emerged as a well visible small Island. Isn't it amazing!
Arba Minch is the biggest City in Gamo Gofa Zone which is found in the Rift Valley of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region, about 500 Kilo Meter away from the Capital City, Addis Ababa. Gamo Gofa is one of the historical parts of Ethiopia where the ancient Birbir Mariam Church is found and home of the great 16th Century historian, Aba Bahiry. Aba Bahiry has witnessed, written a book and documented the horrible Oromo (Gala) migration of the 16 Century.
I have carried out intensive research work with the Farmers' Research Project (FPR)
in the SNNP Region of Ethiopia from 1991 to 1998. Some of my published research works are: on Enset, Cotton, Sweet Potato and on indigenous Knowledge of Farmers. I am glad that most of my recommendations in my published Technical Pamphlet "Cotton in North Omo' are used by farmers and investors in the area.Today Lake Abaya and Chamo are used for irrigation to grow Banana, Tomato, Onions and other fruits and vegetables. Arba Minch is a beautiful Town because it faces the two eye catching Rift Valley Lakes, Abaya and Chamo in North East and the chained Gamo Mountains in the West. የአባያና የጫሞ ሐይቅ እጅግ እየሰፉና በአፈር ደለልና በእምቦጭ እየተጠቁ ነው የሚል ዜና ባለፈው ፋና ብሮድካስቲንግ አቅርቦ ነበር ። በተለይም አባያ ከፍተኛ ጉዳት ስለደረሰበት የዓሳ ምርቱ በእጅጉ ቀንሷል ።
