Yhorm the Giant Information
Not Optional: all Lords of Cinder must be defeated to advance the game.
Siegward of Catarina can help you fight this enemy. His questline must have been completed up to this point. He is not summoned, but instead shows up via cutscene once the fog door is entered, if the questline was properly progressed. Be aware though that having him at your side may trivialize the entire fight against Yhorm.
Due to the presence of a weapon that is absurdly powerful against him that anyone can use, while also having some of the highest health and damage of the bosses, Yhorm is interesting in that he can be considered either the easiest or one of the hardest bosses in the game, depending on if one chooses to capitalize on his weakness.
Location
Yhorm can be found upon his throne behind a Fog Wall in Profaned Capital in a lower part of the temple, directly behind The Profaned Flame.
Drops
Souls: NG (36000), NG+ (108000), NG++ (??), NG+3 (121,500), NG+4 (129,600), NG+6 (135,000), NG+7 (137,700)
Other: Soul of Yhorm the Giant, Cinders of a Lord
Combat Information
Health: NG (27822), NG+ (41149), NG++ (45264), NG+3 (47322), NG+4 (49379), NG+5 (53494), NG+6 (55552), NG+7 (57609)
Deals Standard Damage (whole battle) and Fire Damage (2nd phase).
Weak to the Storm Ruler, which can be found inside the boss arena at the throne. Charge it until it glows a bright white (this will take several seconds) and then use the weapon art R1 or R2 to do significantly increased damage.
Weak to Lightning Damage.
Resistant to Thrust Damage, Slash Damage and Dark Damage.
Immune to Poison/Toxic, Bleed, Frost and Fire Damage.
Has multiple targeting points:
Legs take heavily reduced damage, barely lowering his hp at al.l
Torso and arms take decent damage, but still reduced in comparison to normal enemies.
Head takes extra damage, and opens him up for stagger once a certain amount of damage has been dealt (around 2k total damage)
Ranged attacks of any kind are suggested for this. Lock-on at the head also helps. Certain attacks also make him lower his head significantly, which can be abused quite significantly.
Can be staggered with enough regular blows, mainly to the head, which will open him up to a critical attack (riposte), dealing significant damage. This is signaled by a loud sound (similar to parry) followed up by Yhorm lowering his head to ground level.
Hitting his head while he is in this state massively amplifies the damage done to him (including from spells). Depending of your weapon, you can hit twice then do the riposte for massive damage.

Bruh, I had twin scimitars almost started crying lol
Even my +9 broadsword did only 54 damage
I would suggest that using the Magic Clutch Ring will add extra damage to the swords special (magic) charge attack. I picked up the sword, utilized a homeward bone, grabbed the ring, and went back and killed Yhorm in 4 hits.

What level were you?
Tested this and does not work. Definitely not a 4 hit wonder anyway.

Something that will help you for this boss fight is if you complete Siegward of Catarina's side quest. Doing so will have Siegward join you in the battle against Yhorm. Siegward himself is equipped with a Storm Ruler sword, which (if the player is successful in getting the Storm Ruler next to the throne) will make this boss a near non-issue. Be aware that Siegward can die and won't respawn afterwards, so keep an eye on him.

I'm an idiot and didn't realize he'd show up to fight Yhorm with me (first time playing) and he died and that sucks
yeah I couldn't figure out how to use the storm ruler so catarina just got corner fucked while I tried in vain to help.

Idk I'm not a big fan of gimmicky bosses. This is def the most disappointing boss so far
He's also the only boss that has no second phase. All he does is cinder up, nothing else changes.
I'm at pontiff sulyvahn right now I killed yhorm first and so far i've done about 6 attempts at this guy can't seem to get his last 25% down
When you try to kill him for 3 fking hours and you realise there's an op sword right behind the boss and you kill him first time :(

The message that said "weapon needed" was enough for me to quit and find what that meant, the 130 dam I was doing was going to take waaaaaay too long for such an easy boss..
just hit his right hand, after a couple of hits it'll stagger him and go for the headshot
so I have doing unnecessary grinding by hitting his legs that barely do any damage. turns out it's a gimmick fight.

Also, something that is good to know, If your stamina is really low when you fire the special your stamina will recover MUCH faster. The best way to do this, is charge the weapon next to the boss, then roll away a ton, when your stamina is low from rolling fire the weapon. wait just a second for your stamina to start to regen (it will start regening very quickly as long as your stamina was near gone when you fired the weapon), then start charging and walking towards him while he is still down. repeat.
Side note: don't fire the weapon while the boss is entering phase 2 or while he is recovering from being hit. it will not put him down again.

apart from using the sword. best tip is that you really don’t even have to be very close to him when you use the attack. if you are locked on the burst of wind will hit him and deal the damage.

I am glad i see that not doing much damage with regular weapons is natural to this opponent, i first went in with a raw brigand axe +7 (almost 300 dmg) and i did like 60 dmg per hit and thought "what i am i doing wrong here, i need a better weapon" but since i didn;'t have anything special i just switched to a black knight sword +3 and eventually chipped him down with that.

Thank god I love using the Millwood Greatbow in Abrams mode, using the Storm Ruler came naturally. On a sadder note...Yhorm gave Sieg a crosscounter so hard he glitched thru the pile of charred bodies in the left and I can't talk to him for what I presume is the last time I can do so.
Man that sucks ass, he reminded me so much of Biorr of The Twin Fangs.
For me this is the most amazing boss fight of all DS series
when I first fought it and saw my 314 dmg black knight sword was only getting rid of 2 pixels from its healthbar I said "is there something I have to do to deal more damage to him? a guide it is then."

So it's not an explosion but a ranged attack, I see that staying close to him was uncessary.

Doing siegwards quest quest-line literally makes this boss one of the easiest, although i gotta admit he made the fight easy but i'm never recovering from this loss

I wish the way the Storm Ruler was used in the boss fight was less cryptic. Compared to Demon's Souls where you just picked up the weapon at the Storm King and both L2 and R2 did the attack, here, I would've never known to charge the weapon skill to do the attack.

Maybe it was my stats, but I felt like I did more damage to him when I did the heavy attack with the storm ruler, possibly because I didn't know how high of a range the AOE had, and always tried to hit him directly.
I also found that sometimes, I could run behind a pillar and that would give me a bit more time to charge the sword.
Why his storm ruler special attack doesnt consume fp but when I use it does? is he using any special rings?

This fight looks like he is the playable character and we are the NPC
When i read the hint at his throne and picked up the weapon he killed me so didn't catch the Name nor did i know it was a weapon so i forgot about it. Good thing i came across this guide otherwise this would have been extremly tideous.
This is also my first dark souls game and at the time of writing this it's been a few minutes that I beat Yhorm and a week since the purchase and i am having a blast with it.

this is the only boss with an initail sense of being really hard but since i was able to grab the storm ruler and kill the boss without dying once i kinda felt like he should be harder

I know im super late to this party, but to everyone wondering about the cutscene, its because yhorm was defeated after aldrich
How come when you use the sword it dosent use any of your blue bar and mine does
Sorcerer here, 50+ int, +7 court sorcerer staff
I thought I had no chance vs this boss with my sorcerer if I didn't use the storm ruler. By the time I got it, equipped it and figured out how to release the charged attack Siegward died (leaving me his stuff), making it nearly impossible for me to charge the weapon in peace. Also it only did about 3000 dmg for me, so I would have had to use it about 10 times.
So in the end I ended up using magic, and damn that was easy... Aim for his head, while he is far with GHSA then when you have to cast quick GSA and he dies very quickly. 2 spells to his head he gets staggered, and while he is kneeling keep barraging him with spells. I had to use one ashen estus flask and that was it.
I just wish I knew how to use it before I lost Seigward. After about 100 tries I;m about to tap out.
I can't understand why the wiki says having Siegward join you trivializes this fight. He did basically nothing and died almost right away.
Can always pick it up then use a boneward to bail out to a bonfire. its cheap but it works

I just fought Yhorm and did the siegmeyer quest first but I was using the ithryll straight sword and the fight seemed really easy. I was wondering why it seemed like sometimes my weapon wasn't doing damage and then other times it was taking off big chunks. It was because siegmeyer was hitting him with the storm ruler😂

I suggest using the Wood Grain Ring if you're gonna rock this sword. It only has 10 durability...

it's 2023 and I came here. So useful, 'cause I used my sword and it was just -60hp every hit, and with this sword it took 4 hits and he's done. 1 hit with this sword was -5000hp
I beat him like in 5 minutes thanks to this :D
