    1. Compressor
    2 & 3. Overdrives
    4. Delay
    5. reverb
So basically the same as your's, except I'd use a clip on tuner and use that spot for a compressor. Like you, I would also value versatility in my choices. If you only have five pedals, they have to cover a lot of ground.

  • @Andreorsel

i´d say I´d use a clip on tuner so have room for one more pedal. and my signal chain would be... tilt overdrive - wampler gearbox - keeley halo - line6 M5 (for all sorts of mods) - Boss Ge7 for boosting leads.

    • @stapeld

I like the Line 6 M5 for modulation too, but the foot switches have gotten glitchy and my 50 year old eyes have a hard time reading the display on stage. Shame, because the M5 has a lot to offer but I can’t use it anymore. 😢

    My short answer: (1&2)Overdrive + Boost/Overdrive/Volume (3)Compressor (4)Reverb (5)WILD CARD! but probably chorus
    My long anwswer:
I've really enjoyed tooling around with my old Line 6 M13 -- it was not "old" when I got it, so maybe that just means *I'm* old. It still sounds great and has allowed me to dial in some really specific tones, but I wouldn't say they're as perfect as you get out of your Strymon Flint in the above example, for instance.
I'm now looking at a handful of individual pedals that provide top tone but also a degree of versatility.
(1&2)For overdrive & boost, I'm now looking hungrily at the Strymon Sunset, which among other things takes an expression pedal input in a variety of creative ways. I've known for a long time that Eric Clapton's "secret weapon" in his signature Strats, and the thing that has allowed him to outgrow the massive Gibsons from his Cream days, is an absurd 25dB active mid-boost that's right on-board the guitar. I'm not really interested in carving up a guitar to put that in, but a boost pedal that clicks on or off doesn't provide nearly the level of on-the-fly control that lets him shape his dirt in very organic ways that give that famous human-voice richness to guitar parts that are otherwise fairly straightforward pentatonic stuff. So my plan at present is to set one of the Sunset channels as overdrive, one as boost, and control the amount of boost feeding into the overdrive by way of an expression pedal. Maximum tonal shaping on the fly.
Does that count as two pedals because of the expression pedal? If so, fine, I'll count it as two. The expression pedal, through the Sunset, would count as a separate volume pedal for swells & such. So I guess I'll count it as two pedals collectively.
IN a pinch, if I NEED to go a lot more heavy than I normally do, for metal and the like, the Sunset will let me feed an overdrive into an overdrive instead of a clean boost into an overdrive, sacrificing a little bit of that perfect solo-guitar tone sculpting to get me closer to the really thick fuzz sounds of the heavier distortion that I don't often have much use for. Most of the time the amp I play through has its own high-gain models that already add to distortion, and I don't ever need more distortion, no matter how metal I get, than OD + OD + the high gain "metal" modeled amp would give me.
(3)Everybody needs a compressor. I don't know what to do here. For now, the M13 has some good-enough options and I just dial them in without thinking too much about what they are. The "red" model, I think, is my go-to? Probably on a dedicated board of single-use pedals I'd want something like a Keeley, but this isn't something I've had much time to learn about as separate units.
(4)Everybody needs reverb. My unit, because the price was right, is the TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2, which is the first pro quality reverb I've ever owned that was just a straight reverb unit. The price was actually BETTER than right, because I ordered the HoF2 and they sent me the bigger 2x4 version by mistake. One of the additions to the larger unit is a proper Shimmer function, which is one of the reasons I was really lusting after the Strymon flagships - the BlueSky, or the way-too-much-for-my-needs BigSky. The truth is that I could go down the rabbit hole of reverb tones forever, and this is the exact right unit for a connoisseur to have: it gives me enough options and flexibility to do a lot of things, but the BigSky, when I look at it, is so theoretically infinite that I'd just sit in a room dialing in reverb settings for the rest of my life and never record or tour anymore. I'm very happy with this one.
(5): ????? Here is where the idiosycratic stuff comes in. What do I use the last spot for? Chorus? Delay? Tremolo? That classic orange phaser? The now-discontinued, completely nuts Hatsune Miku pedal that makes me sound like an anime pop idol? The first thing to mind, because I'm in a Clapton headspace owing to the Sunset OD above, is that I love, love the sound of the Dytronics CS-5 Tri-Stero Chorus, a rackmount unit from the 80s that was part of his 24 Nights sound, and a big hit among LA session players like Michael Landau and Steve Lukather. If I was going to rely on one chorus unit, it'd be a n affordable stompbox that knocks off this unit... Earthquaker makes the Aurelius Tri-Voice Chorus, which might be one I'd want to try, especially given my newfound love of plugging that expression pedal into every stompbox I can. There's a lot of tonal shaping possible here, and I feel like that would quickly become the "special sauce" that makes an otherwise conventional sound I play into something that others could duplicate 90% by ear, but never 100%. Again, the M13 has a decent tri-chorus copy on-board, and so I think we're coming back to the idea that the M13, or the smaller one-or two-pedal equivalents, the M5/M9, would BE the fifth pedal, just because the versatility is there to make the "wild card" pedal whatever I need it to be.

In those days, every record was tuned slightly differently, so I had to tune up real quick to play along. Great practice at tuning by ear. We can't do it today as all music is recorded at 440. Depends on what you play. If you’re playing low gain or clean then you’ll need other pedals than a high gain player. Noise gate for example. There are three pedals I consider to be staples for any style board. An overdrive, an EQ, a tuner. Anything else depends on style of music and type of amp.

Walrus Fundamental Reverb possibly since I’ll probably be running mono and that sounds great in mono. Lastly, a delay. Probably the Keeley Halo. It’s a great pedal even in mono. I always run delay after reverb. It just sounds better when higher reverb settings are used.

Very versatile pedal - from light overdrive thru to terrific cutting lead solo stuff. I bought one in the mid '70s and another one when that got stolen and recently got the Double Hot Cake from Paul, which combines the original with another pedal he designed and you can daisy chain both for a 3rd 'fat' drive. Right now it's Polytune Mini > Keeley Comp Mini > Walrus Lillian > Xotic EP Booster > Greer Lightspeed > Diamond Memory Lane (the new one) > Strymon Flint. The main change I could make would be to swap out the Lillian for an additional gain stage (honestly probably a Blues Driver). Not including a favourite preamp as the guts (EAE Model FeT or BE-OD Deluxe depending on style) it would look like this for me:
    1. Volume Pedal is a must utility for me, something you simply can't do with both hands still playing (but not everyone's style).
2 .Polytune 3 both as a tuner and as a mute. (If I used a clip-on tuner instead, Id prob run a Phase 90 or a Small Stone for modulation needs.)
    3. A boost/OD (plumes in my case)
    4. A big muff (Green Russian)
    5. Combo reverb/delay pedal (Dispatch master or maybe Nux Atlantic)
Can cover a lot of ground with those 5. The only other effect I really use is a low octave or pitch shifting, but that's not really as essential.

That’s a very good question. I tend to always put some kind of amp/cab sim pedal at the head of every board I’ve been having built recently for the simple reason being ‘why not 🤷🏾’. With features like a ‘headphone out’ and in the case of the DSM Humboldt Simplifier mkii, an ‘aux-in’ for plugging in music from your iPhone to practice in your hotel room or bedroom, I figure it gives you the option of bypassing it by turning it off and playing through a real amp or in the absence of one … going straight to FOH. Also the Iridium has decent Room verb on the right side as you know.
The Deco is probably the pedal I’d request to be buried with, it’s that good in my opinion and is on every board I’ve ever built. It’s just so versatile providing everything from tape sat-chorus/vib/double tracking borderline delay and great modulation
      Hope that helps.

Why do so many players rely on a tuner pedal?
I’ve gigged a lot, and I’ve used a Snark for 20 years or more now.
I didn’t use a tuber at all, for years, as I’d just tune to whomever I played with.
I have a good ear, so I can tune to someone pretty fast, but I’ve never found a tuner pedal, that was so much better than a Snark that works, to justify taking up board real estate.
If the Snark is giving one trouble, return it for another.
I’ve had a couple, long ago, that gave me some problems, but I just returned them for another, and used them for years.

I often am playing where there is too much other noise to be able to tune to others on the fly. I would agree with Shawn that a tuner pedal is my most important pedal as well. I have tried using headstock tuners, and I just find them more awkward than using a pedal. To each their own though.

@@RevvAmps Not to mention - tuner can mute the entire board with a single click. Also - no batteries to forget.

Headstock tuners are fine but I always either lost or destroyed them so I went the tuner pedal route.

@@ShawnTubbs that range between 500Hz and about 3kHz a few parametric points slid around in there till your mids are pronounced but not boxy or bitey but just smooth.
Brand wise??? Im a cheap ass so I’m currently running a 10 band cayline , 20maybe 30USD? But iZotope plug ins for outboard and im currently running a katana as my main amp so i can put EQ blocks all over the signal path with its 2 dedicated eq and the ability to add 2 more in the mod and/or FX slots and …(so many options in this amp!) and the global eq. It’s excessive but I like having control of something in my life even if its just a parametric parameter😂
Why do bass amps get all the cool contour , slope, and semi parametric multi band mid eq ‘s ? is it because we can screw up our amp enough with just tone 3 controls?

It's mostly in jest. While his collection is extensive (out of control?), it's maybe justifiable as market research, and undeniably useful in streams where a viewer wants to hear a particular combination. Maybe he'll stop at 5 klons 🤔
