Honestly I felt he died of underlying complications of COVID. It was weird around that time where black men in their early 50s were just dropping around that time.
He had a song named "I'm Leaving" with his sisters that I used to have on repeat back in the day. It perfectly described a relationship I was going through at the time. I still play it from time to time. Thank you for your art Mr Powell...May you rest in eternal peace 🕊

RIH Jesse and continuous thoughts & prayers to his family. I was so shocked when he passed it was just sad. Honestly, I believe he didn't get the recognition he deserved because he could "Sang Sang" and he didn't fit the narrative. It never fails in the music industry, if you can "sang" and don't fit the industry stereotype narrative of what a black R&B singer "supposed" to be (over-the-top sexy, vulgar songs, girls) and you ain't selling your soul you may have a little success but not much. I recall many years ago seeing him sing in the Bay Area he came to a church I was at, and I did not think it was humanly possible for a man to sing that high register. And yes, in my opinion, "You" is in the top five wedding songs.
One of the most classic songs I've ever heard. And he's from my hometown. They say it was an overdose but I don't care he was a great singer a great person a great writer and he did a lot for the music industry and a short period of time. He will be missed. RIP
I love his version of Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack’s Where is the love with Trina from Dead Presidents. You still moves me every time I listen to it. He definitely was seriously underrated and unsung. He will be truly missed.
Never really knew what his cause of death was. I remember in middle school that the bus driver always played Jesse's music, Kenny Lattimore, Deborah Cox, Brandy. It was a great time for music. *edit, you mentioned the year 1996 and that's exactly what I remember about that time. The radio was such a fun part of life back then. Unlike now.
