  • The plaintiff lived in a room in the defendant’s house, but it was unbearable to live there. After moving out, the plaintiff says the defendant illegally withheld his security deposit, so he’s suing. The defendant denies owing because he says the plaintiff used some of his security deposit to pay rent for his last week, and the plaintiff left a bunch of furniture behind.

It’s amazing how people interpret, in their head, what was said. With some digging the Judge discovered 1. Someone move in immediately (you had no lost of rent), 2. You didn’t document that they were late on rent in fact there is evidence to the contrary. 3. You lied about when you took a picture! But the defendant interpretation…“landlords always get screwed” . As if he was the victim.

People like to play victim... And somebody told the public: you're allowed to tell people: if you don't like something, show them and/or tell them in person, that they're wrong-- don't hold back! And this is now one of the problems in our country.
The defendant got away with talking back to JM, only because he talked over her. I was hoping she'd stop and ask him, "wait, what did you just say?" He literally doesn't think he did anything to damage his case -- and he never will.

For the people saying that they shouldn't have sued for 160,
    1. For you it may not be a lot of money, but for some it can make the difference between food or no food, electricity or other essentials.
    2. Sometimes it is about the principle. Some people will walk all over you because they think they can UNTIL you show them they actually can't. Also going on TV, people might see the scummy landlord and refrain from renting from him, which is good.

When you take someone to court over small stuff it is always about some old unresolved grudges and not about the actual money. If someone is so desperate for that kinda money you can almost bet that have huge issues they have to deal with and worrying about getting by for a month is not even a concern.

On the last month of the lease (if you dont plan on staying after the lease end (In Ontario, Even if your lease ends, it automatically converts to a month to month tenancy with the same terms as the original lease so you do not have to move out at the end of your lease in the landlord cannot make you unless they file for an eviction notice through the courts and landlords are only allowed to evict you for specific reasons)) you do not pay any rent for that month since you already gave last month's rent at the start of the tenancy. If you do create damage, the Landlord goes to court and sues you there for damages. Theey are not allowed to ask for more noney unless a court approves ir
