It’s amazing how people interpret, in their head, what was said. With some digging the Judge discovered 1. Someone move in immediately (you had no lost of rent), 2. You didn’t document that they were late on rent in fact there is evidence to the contrary. 3. You lied about when you took a picture! But the defendant interpretation…“landlords always get screwed” . As if he was the victim.

People like to play victim... And somebody told the public: you're allowed to tell people: if you don't like something, show them and/or tell them in person, that they're wrong-- don't hold back! And this is now one of the problems in our country.
The defendant got away with talking back to JM, only because he talked over her. I was hoping she'd stop and ask him, "wait, what did you just say?" He literally doesn't think he did anything to damage his case -- and he never will.

For the people saying that they shouldn't have sued for 160,
    1. For you it may not be a lot of money, but for some it can make the difference between food or no food, electricity or other essentials.
    2. Sometimes it is about the principle. Some people will walk all over you because they think they can UNTIL you show them they actually can't. Also going on TV, people might see the scummy landlord and refrain from renting from him, which is good.

When you take someone to court over small stuff it is always about some old unresolved grudges and not about the actual money. If someone is so desperate for that kinda money you can almost bet that have huge issues they have to deal with and worrying about getting by for a month is not even a concern.

@@user-qz4cn5nz6o He took him to small-claims court, which you and any other person can do for amounts up to 10,000, depending on the state. He did everything in the right way. Also, it's irrelevant if he has money problems or not, he was being taken advantage of and he used his legal right to sue. Plain and simple, it was his money, which he deserved back.

@@user-qz4cn5nz6o What if the landlord did that to all of his tenants? That adds up. He steals a bit here & there and feels smug because they don't sue him over small amounts. Then he lies about "damage". Maybe now he won't be so quick to lie and steal.
And regardless of whether it's $16 or $160, it was money the defendant owed to the plaintiff and refused to give to him.
The plaintiff has a backbone! Good for him!

On the last month of the lease (if you dont plan on staying after the lease end (In Ontario, Even if your lease ends, it automatically converts to a month to month tenancy with the same terms as the original lease so you do not have to move out at the end of your lease in the landlord cannot make you unless they file for an eviction notice through the courts and landlords are only allowed to evict you for specific reasons)) you do not pay any rent for that month since you already gave last month's rent at the start of the tenancy. If you do create damage, the Landlord goes to court and sues you there for damages. Theey are not allowed to ask for more noney unless a court approves ir

It’s called an investigation. Show your ID as he had more than mere suspicion. You’re looking into a parked car with what he believes is a coat hanger on your backpack.
If identity was proven the officer could have run the plate and discovered the owners name.
    End of problem.
