thank you Sukayah! you're so sweet. Of COURSE the food is amazing - actually having been away for so long i find Singaporean food very very unique and quite hard to replicate in its mix of spices and the balance of tastes.... even for dishes that appear in different cultures too the execution is always different. I ALSO LOVE THE PARKS!! I love pasir ris park haha ive spent so much of my life in SG just hanging out there cos i love the trees n the bird n even the occasional wild boar there. I think Singaporeans are amazing. The average Singaporean is so quick on his/her feet, and very resilient, and we always try to be kind n helpful and we are a direct bunch of people. I also enjoy that about my people. That's what Singaporeans are like to me - kind, honest, direct. Those are the traits i associate most with most Singaporeans. n I'm proud.

As a foreigner living in Singapore, it’s interesting to see the city though the eyes of a returning citizen. I often wonder if the pace of change is really necessary. Nobody ever gets to step back and take a breath and work out what they really want
It’s also fascinating to see how the “speed”’of life here impacted how fast you speak and how your Singapore accent came back :)

As a Singaporean, I also returned to visit Singapore after spending two decades in the States. I tried the boat tour at the Singapore river along with my American wife and kid. It was a very strange feeling touring my own country, like a foreigner, with a boatload of white people and hearing the guide describe each section of Singapore to us.

Singapore is busy in a nice way. Yes there is a lot of pressure to be productive, but people are still nice and respectful. Can't say the same for New York, Chicago or even Los Angeles.
I definitely agree with you and I'm impressed of your courage to not conform to the system and society's expectations.
I live in silicon Valley and there is a lot of pressure here to work work work and make it. I'm doing so for the past 20 years. I will soon be exploring and exit soon. Possibly south east Asia.
We visited Singapore 3 years ago and love the place, but can feel the stress and pressure. The people there seem to deal with it well.
My family will visit again next month. We are very much looking forward to the food, people and attractions.

Your real-time insights about the impressions you’re experiencing are very insightful and useful. Often, we return home to be reminded of why we left. It isn’t so much a matter of cognition, as it is a matter of preference arranged by our genetic makeup. As you showed us the food courts, I was reminded that I’m happiest among the mountain northern Thailand whilst riding my scooter and have no interest in participating in handing over money in quiet belief that this sorbet will give me a moment of happiness. We’ve been duped into believing that spending equals happiness.
No place is perfect, and this in itself perfect, I read once, as it requires to move again to find what it is we’re looking for. Often what we’re looking for isn’t a place but movement. It’s movement that satisfies the craving our nomadic gene seems to require. Thank you for your courage and for your professionalism. I enjoyed your presentation.

Your observations of “Singapore Inc” and the pace of people having to keep up is absolutely my experience of it too when I go back to visit. I was back in December last year and on one hand I loved it but on the other felt a little stifled (maybe it was the heat that added to it, ha). Welcome back fellow east sider! Could recognize all the places that you went to 😆
But totally agree with your sentiments about life here. Can’t wait to move overseas (looking at Chiang Mai or Bali) in the near future and live as a digital nomad as well.
Do you see yourself moving back when you and your spouse are older?

hullo fellow Eastie! East is the best forever! haha! I miss the olden days very super chill chalet vibe of Pasir ris especially..... about 20-10 years ago perhaps? now it's just become so much more busy and faster paced, but still better than Orchard n CBD lah of course. I don't think V n I will want to be old in SG here. It's too stressful and there's no surf, which we both live for, i think even if we're so old we can't surf, we'll still find a village or mountain somewhere with some nice gardens n we can maybe grow our own stuff ourselves.... i hate malls. If i had to spend time in a mall more than once in 2 weeks all the time i'll poke my eyeballs out.

@@JeanVoronkova Haha yes! East side best side.. totally agree with you. Now, one can stay as far away as possible at the ends of Singapore like Pasir Ris or Boon Lay, but life as a whole as a Singaporean is stressful. The urban landscape, cost of living, the constant chase for more and pressure to succeed…
Sounds like Chiang Mai will be suitable for you guys to set up shop in your later years!
Looking forward to seeing more of your videos and life in Bali.. jia you to more passive income and peace 😁

Absolutely refreshing and enjoyable. I like looking at SG through a we-live-the-truth lens - well said. Thank you Jean for making this wonderful video. Oh Singapore, we love your food court, kopitiam and MRT convenience after your world-renounce cleanliness. I ate 6-8 meals at day while back! Ex-Singlish in California.

I think the good thing abt indonesia is that it is still affordable to live in but also so close to spore. But if i can choose myb malaysia is better. It is closer to spore w better infrastructure it seems. Actually bangkok is even better development wise but if you were thai you wont appreciate spore as malaysians and indo would do becos different root culture.

First all, food in SG is amazing. I've been to SG a few times and always enjoyed the hawker centres, never had enough time to eat everything...I bet Vitaly is envious of you right now haha.
And boy, we are like in sync with our thoughts...I've been back in Australia for 3 days after 8 days in Bali, and this time I'm finding myself analysing a lot the differences between Balinese and Aussie lifestyles in a big city like Melbourne. I've always appreciated the quality of life here in terms of decent public infrastructure, public services, safety and welfare, cleanliness, etc. But for the first time I'm starting to feel that it's a bit 'boring', and in some aspects, I'm questioning whether we have gone just a little bit too far here too, just like you said, there's a lot of 'Can't do this. Can't do that. Must do this' and most things are so organised, modern, neat, sterilised...Australia is still pretty relaxed though compared to SG so I can totally understand what you mean in this video.
Enjoy your time in SG! Thanks for showing us a glimpse of your family :)

Enjoyed watching the video. I've spent around 12 hours for transferring flights in Singapore just to explore universal studio and a mall few years back. Life seemed like at a fast pace there, but regardless would love to visit the country again soon for the touristy stuff and all. Have a good rest of your day.

heya Japjot! yeah it's WONDERFUL to be back in SG as a tourist mostly - super fun with so much going on and the GOOD food omg! I kinda have like bifocal vision cos i'm half touristing and half i see the locals like my family n friends n how they're getting on n how everyone's making so much money but somehow it still seems never enough so its actually given me a lot of food for thought. BUt yes def come back here for hols its awesome!!

Hi, great videos and narration. Ex Sg too, rat race caught up Singapore, kiasu mentality became worst, food are still excellent (always better and cleaner than Malaysia), old hangouts are gone. Seriously thinking of heading back but surely not Sg, maybe N Vietnam. I love Indonesia but unsafe due to a pocket of religious "orangutans". Tks for ur videos, enjoyed it.

I think I would like to experience Singapore 🇸🇬, big City, mega organised and squeak clean 🏙. Everyone behaving themselves, working and living to the max 😮 . Interesting how you pick up on the pressure and speed even when you are on a social ‘holiday style’ visit. Take care my friend 🙋‍♂️ ! Cheers, Don 🚹

Thanks Jean. Unique seeing you in your former home environment. Personally, I prefer city living to a Bali type existence. I understand the appeal of a slower pace and certainly much more affordable. Have not been to Singapore nor Bali - only Thailand and Vietnam.....Hope to someday soon get to visit Southeast Asia. Good luck to you. Oh - wish you would give some prices of various meals/snacks etc.

As an aspiring future entrepreneur, I feel like I might be like you in the future. My friend and me are definitely targeting Bali as our base of operation. So I imagine I will be there very much. However, I also feel a tiny tad bit sad that I will be away from Singapore in the future because of business reasons. I am also worried, I might become an alien when I visit back. I don't ever want to lose connection with this land I learnt to love so much. I hope I can still feel the sense of belonging in the future when I visit back.
