  • Paul Rubens Floral Tube Watercolor Review
    Today we are taking a look at the tube paints from the Paul Rubens company. amzn.to/2Nkw3g8 (affiliate link used, 5% off coupon code: Code: 05TEFY81 ) I recently reviewed their set of 24 half pans. Their Metallic colors knocked my socks off and the standard half pans were decent for the price. The tube watercolors that we are going to look at today really impressed me. They seem brighter, much more transparent and glossier...waitI think the word is luminescent. I have used them in several paintings and I have not seen a downside except that the naming of the colors if different that out customary western watercolor names but luckily all of the paint tubes have pigment info so you can determine what the common name for the color would be if they are different.
    Pros:
    Price (under $60 for 24 12ml tubes)
    19 of the 24 are single pigment colors
    Colors glaze well
    Paint is reliable, it does what I expect and works like my other professional paints
    *These remind me most of my Renesans Tube watercolors from Poland.
    Cons:
    I am not crazy about the earth tones. I like the Van Dyke brown but the other browns are weak and have odd undertones, also the raw sienna color is weak.
    These paints can be purchased on Amazon and here is a 5% coupon code below as well

    I just love your RUclips videos. First is your voice. You are easy to listen to. Second you don’t wonder off topic. You give all the important information. Third your audio and lighting are excellent. Fourth your knowledge is amazing and your instructions are easy to follow. Those points are in no particular order. I could listen to you for hours and sometimes I do if I’m trying to learn a particular technique. I also like how you combine card making and coloring in your projects. You are honest with your product reviews which means a lot. I have to say you are my favorite. You have taught me a lot since I started coloring a little over a year ago. Oh, my wife is the card maker and I color the images she stamps. I do some of the die cutting and embossing.

    A couple of year ago, the popular brands online were Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections and the Gansai Tambi watercolors, yet no one even mentions them anymore. Like you said, Paul Rubens is the new name on the market, but I think it's important to recognize that they are another private label product out of China, much like Arteza, Wanmei, and Meeden. Paul Rubens are sold by Shanghai Aowen Art Materials who also sells every other type of art product you can think of. I definitely promote the benefit of affordable art supplies, especially for students, but for me, I tend to lean toward time-tested products from established companies. I'll be curious to see how well these Paul Rubens products do on the market, how many reviews pop up, and whether they have the staying power to be relevant in another year or so. Great review and, based on your review and experience with them, I think anyone looking for new watercolors to try and explore with will really enjoy these! Nice work, Lindsay! :)

      In addition. Only being able to buy in sets makes it difficult for me to be able to even consider trying them. What to do when just the burnt sienna and the ultramarine blue are finished? In addition I would wait til some light-fast tests have been done. I wonder about the binder as well.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 лет назад +21

      I would just refill with another brand. The paint if offered open stock in China, Korea and Japan where watercoloring is more popular but it us hard for companies to import single tubes as a lot of it would sit on shelves waiting to sell and be more expensive per ounce. I recommend the large 37ml tubes of DaVinci watercolors for those most often used colors (ultramarine, burnt seinna, yellow ocher etc) but I like to try the sets to experience a range of paints and try the quirky picks of colors some companys have. I'm a watercolor junkie lol!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 лет назад +29

      Hi Mark, I didn't know that parent company but the paint is good nonetheless. Prima is a private label of Mungyo (they make a lot of the craft watercolors, watercolor crayons, pastels, and Sargent art stuff and are great student quality-well worth the price) and I think Gansai Tambi is just an import from kutetake but I'm not sure. They are a different animal (love that pan size tho!) I like these paints and yes they are the hot new thing but it doesn't make them bad. If you have a good assortment of paints you dont need them for sure. I am just really curious about new products and enjoy trying them.

    Wow, this is amazing, thank you so much for the review! I have known the brand for a long while but haven't tried their tube paints before. I think as late as last spring when I was in China they still didn't have sets of tube paints, you just had to buy open stock. And in their online stores some of my favorite colors were almost always out of stock, so I never ended up getting any tube paint. Great to know they now have a set available even on Amazon! I am definitely getting a set. I looked at Taobao again, apparently there is barely any price difference, so it seems like a really good deal!

I see that Ali Express is selling them individually....but they would be pricey with the shipping and we would also need to keep in mind that they would take a while to get here. So if you see that you are getting low....it would be best to order before you really need it. It is just an option that I saw....just sharing. BTW....I have ordered through Ali Express in the past.....some have them here in a week while others may take a month. I have had one dispute and am still awaiting a response. Hey👋🏻 So I've been having troubles with mine drying. After over a month a bunch of colors still haven't dried, and that's with doing them in layers. Others seperate into yellow puddles of gum arabic, still after being mixed in the tube and again in the pan. Some are quite thick and others are runny, the runny ones are the ones seperaiting from the gum arabic. -I'm just hoping you can share your thoughts on what they (Lightwish) told me?
      So when I contacted Lightwish I was told that:
      "Our paints are manufactured to stay wet for a long time, it's completely normal for paints to have fluctuations like you've experienced, and they will not grow mold"
      Also they attached a photo of a pallet with pans they'd filled themselves- said it was filled over a year ago, that the paints are 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙬𝙚𝙩, and that this is completely normal! Sorry I'm just soo confused and I don't know who else to ask.. this was my second Paul Rubens purchase and this first one was even worse..😥 I'm still new to watercolors, but none of my other (Daniel Smith- Holbein- Van Gogh) paints are anything like this.
      Thankyou for your time Lindsay, I really really appreciate it.

      @@lindsayjayne2169 that's weird, mine dried fine. I didnt fill the wells completely, I put some in one end so I could pull washes from. I didnt have binder separation either. I live on Maine so mild to cool climate with moderate humidity. In the tropics they may take longer to dry and may not fully set but mine did just like any other watercor does. Its not as sticky as m Graham. That dosen't sound like the paint I have. When did you purchase it? Mine was also sold by lightwish and they are reputable, they are the official usa dealer I think.
      Edited to add, I just looked at your previous comment where you bought them a month ago. Maybe they changed the formula. I'm gonna check recent Amazon reviews and see if anything changed.

      I purchased them off of Amazon and from Lightwish actually. It's just odd as nowhere in the description does it mention "paints that stay wet" lol.. To be honest she was rather rude about it, which is really off-putting for a "professional" line not to back their products up.

    Hello, your work is very valuable. I am really a fundamentalist. Thank you. Please bring a real photo of the portrait or nature of the sea, forest, sky, mountain and teach how to mix the color for its various components to turn it into a watercolor painting. If you have a lot of training, the channel will be very welcome, in which case your effort will have an educational burden. Thank you. Please teach this type of color mix training a lot. Thank you very much for your efforts.

    How well do the tubes rewet? I have heard some like Arteza tubes don't rewet, which makes me not want to use them.

      great, no cracking in the pan either. I added glycerin to my Arteza and it solved the problem in the pans.

      @@thefrugalcrafter that is wonderful thank you. I have watched several of your video reviews of watercolor items as I am just buying watercolor and brushes for them. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these. The review you did on the Pretty Excellent set, has me extremely excited to buy those first. Oh and thank you also for reviewing the SNAP brushes as well. I guess I could have replied on all of them, but this seemed easier. Once I get comfortable with the pans I will definitely buy these tubes. Again thank you.

      Check what? They are different mini pictures of people, van gogh's and Paul Rubens. It looks similar because they are small faces.

    I almost purchased these, then I remembered....If possible, BUY AMERICAN. "M. Graham" are made in THE State of Washington. "Daniel Smith" are made in the State of Oregon. Please PUT AND KEEP AMERICANS WORKING. Please PROMOTE THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.
    Another suggestion is to search online for American Made art supplies.

      I agree, but even when you buy "American", alot of the parts or ingredients are imported from China, India, Thailand, etc. No product is ever 100% American anymore, which is sad.

    Why buy from China when we have good AMERICAN PAINTS. Are you not aware of the trade sanction !
