    I'm an absolute sucker for small palettes with a lot of distinct wells - I really don't need any new sets, but if I were to buy one just the mixing wells alone would be enough to move this set to the top of my list 😅

    I really enjoyed this excellent review and seeing the color swatches. I have no color knowledge for mixing colors but, I really like your watercolor reviews. I was hoping that when I stamp and color cards like Koi in water, I could add some watercolor to add the water. Maybe I could learn to add watercolors to other kinds of scenes on cards done in pencil, marker and other media. The art you did with this set was really impressive. Thank you for sharing it!

    Hullo Lindsay, thank you for sharing your wonderful review of this palette and paints! I am at a point in my art journey where I just don’t want to use student grade anything! I understand why you are doing reviews of these products and I do like the palette! I have always thought there must be a better palette out there! I usually grab a porcelain plate, I have a short stack near my painting area that I purchased from my local thrift store or my wife keeps me in mind when going to yard sales and will pick up the occasional plate that looks like a good mixing plate! I do drop them less these days, but I am dead clumsy. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us! Please take care, be safe and enjoy your week! EDIT: I have skipped quite a few commercials in this video, they are sticking ads with 20 minutes and longer times! This is bad, I will set through a 2, 3, even 5 minute ad but I just don’t want to lose my thoughts and watch a long advertisement. I have no idea how this is set in your RUclips settings or if you can! WEIRD!

    • @Julia94549
      @Julia94549 Год назад +1

      Usually, you can click a button to skip through an ad after about 5 seconds. The ones you have to watch usually last about 15-30 seconds. Twenty minutes is ridiculous; that's basically an infomercial.

    • @mjpete27
      @mjpete27 Год назад

      @@Julia94549 Oh, yes I know that. I try to watch ads for the Artists I truly enjoy and want to support! If you click off of every advertisement, the person will not receive the ad monies for the video! Like I said in my comment, I watch the Ads up to 5 minutes. Some I might have to click skip after 3 if I am disgusted by the subject or completely turned off. I have watched some real goofy ads on a subject I have no intention of buying participating in or ever looking into! I was just trying to let Lindsay know that someone or something is giving her videos to long ads!

    The Sap Green is made with the discontinued Quin Gold, PO49. I have a Meiliang set which has the same pigment info for its Sap Green. Pretty sure Meiliang and Pretty Excellent are the same. Interesting that these budget sets are using PO49 in their mixes. Anyway, looks like a nice little set! Thanks - I always enjoy your reviews! 😀

  • @sonyaoart
    @sonyaoart Год назад +2

    Thanks for the review! A lot of the multi-pigment colours are also the same pigments as Phoenix and Cotman. What they call Indigo is the same as the Cotman Payne’s grey (which is still one of my favourite Payne’s greys, that why I know this off the top off my head). The only ones that are different, as far as I can tell, are the Purple lake and the Hooker’s green. Did you say this one has PO49? That is the real quin gold, if they still have a stash of the pigment it they should just make quin gold with it… I do like the palette, but I’m not sure I need more student grade paint 😂

    The Gamboge Hue is really pretty. And it's PY153? I thought PY153 got discontinued? 😮
    And both the Sap Green and Hooker's Green Light have PO49 in it? The original Quin Gold pigment that also got discontinued?
    Wow. Now I really want to get my hands on this set. 😆

      Yes, I think they either have vast pigment stores or they are using old information (like they are repackaging a previous line but none of the pigment info seem wrong on the other colors so that's a good sign)

    I still love my MeiLang but I will say there’s probably too many blues, reds, and greens so for folks ok with doing some mixing and that want a neat palette that new one might be a good choice. But again, still use my Mei Lang all the time haha.

    Personal preference is so funny. I love Raw Umber and it's one of the colours I buy in different brands, especially in oils. I wonder how much that has to do with living in Scotland where it's a lot more dull and cold 😂 I use it in landscapes all the time to push back my greens because alot of the time they need muted, lol

    Great video! Side note: I def don't think those pigment numbers are correct. Since PO49 is the out of production Quin Gold. PR88 and PY153 are both out of production as well- tho a few brands still use PY153 from leftover pigment like Sennelier. Da Vinvi uses PR88 in a mix but both all 3 pigments to purchase somewhere would be incredibly expensive...Actually a lot of the pigments said to be used for this set are pretty expensive...I personally believe these overseas makers kind of just look up pigments used for the typical watercolor name and just put those down- without realizing that a few of the pigments they listed are out of production...So of course before selling anything made by Paul Ruben or these other similar sets with suspiciously same pigments definitely do lightfast tests of your own. Of course, these are just my opinions, and they are made without malicious intent. Spread the love. ❤❤❤ Anyway, great video Lindsay, thanks so much for sharing. Much love

      Some of the pigments remind me of old cotman watercolors, i wonder if they copied them. I have an old tube of cotman hookers green dark and it uses the same pigments they listed. And I know they also had a gamboge that used py153, along with other colors that also match. The rest I would have to check

    Since you are working on a review, I will give you a heads up on the color names. They are different on the box, than on the swatch sheet, than on the paints itself. The numbers are at least the same.

    I have a question. How do you tell the difference between student grade PR waterproof and their professional and also whats rhe difference between their student grade line and their pretty excellent line and which is better. ❤

    I’m a sucker for cute palettes, you have given a lot of people that disease! These dont look like much new, although as others have noted, they are claiming some weird pigments, with PO49 quin gold and PR88 thioindigo ( which has poor lightfastness). I’ve noticed a few other brands using PR88 though. And PR206 is discontinued, but they might have inventory. You can always increase flow by adding a few drops of ox gall or synthetic ox gall to your clean water. And thanks for giving the best explanation of Chinese White and how to use it on You Tube. It wasn’t until I started with playing with gouache in the 30 days class that I really understood how to use PW4 and PW6.

    I'm confused (as usual). How does this compare to the Paul Rubens full pan (24) student grade set you reviewed a couple of years ago? The one you likened to Sonnet? Sorry if you mentioned it in this review...I missed it if you did. They are very close in price (couple of dollars.) Thanks....

    Hello Lindsay, I watched both videos about Paul Rubens set, the Qiaomei and the Gucai set, but dont know what is the difference in quality between those two sets, would you make a video comparing those two?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  11 месяцев назад +1

      They are different types of paint. The qiaomei is more like a western watercolor, and the gauci is mote 9f an Eastern watercolor that you would use on rice paper. It really depends on what you prefer for colors and if you want tubes or pans. Thr gauci have a bit of a smell, and I think they might use an animal binder like a lot of gansai paints do.

    Paul Rubens continues to offer new palettes/paint sets, however they don’t feel like they are improving anything. They’re earlier artist and budget paints are really nice. I enjoy them a lot! I understand they need to stay in business and keep making money. Budget sets are great for being able to access decent watercolors at a lower cost. I’m not a fan of the shine though. So… I’m kinda torn on this one. I really like the palette design though!

    I have the Pretty Excellent 48 set, and it seems to have pigment information (not on the box, wrapper, or swatch sheet, but on the plastic overlay) for everything except the glitter colors. According to the overlay, the white is PW4. The overlay also has stars on it, but I'm not sure if that is lightfast information or not as the PW4 has 5 stars, and everything else has 4 stars (except the glitter colors).
