    So today I was on Amazon seeing the "Black Friday" deals. I ran across this set of Paul Reubens beginner paint set that I had never seen before. "Full pans?", I said to myself. Nice! They were on sale AND there was a coupon. Sure, I have a bunch of pallets including Pretty Excellent, which I like very much. But this was FULL PANS, which I found very appealing. Plus SALE and COUPON. So, I ordered them along with the Paul Reubens 5X7 Hot press block and the 5x7 sketchbook (both also on sale and with coupons). I don't have a lot of cotton paper, so I treated myself. A few hours go by and I am at a point in my day when I want to see if there is anything interesting on RUclips. Well, there you are, reviewing the very paints I just ordered. And you LIKE them. Yay me! My mom always told me I was smart. Thanks for validating me, Lindsay!

    Isn't it funny how much your first happy (or intense) memories of colors can stick with you? My very first watercolors were Sonnet and as soon as you opened the Paul Rubens set, I knew exactly what they looked like! It's really nice that they have put it in a tin, tho. I had to buy my first one.

    I needed to start somewhere and this set was the best value for quality / price. The budget was tight and I also needed some quality paper and a couple of brushes so I took the plunge. So far I'm very pleased and I'm learning from the internet. Luv your videos.

    Hey, Lindsay, just wanted you to know I bought the Paul Rubens set based on your review and it was a revelation. For me, it really hit the sweet spot between using nice colors and recognizing that I only paint a few postcards a year. I love love love the full pans and the set has enough colors that I can use them straight from the pans but also dabble in mixing. Every time I use it, I have such a good time. This set is cherished and I finally understand, after trying a few disappointing sets, what you mean about watercolor palettes having their own personality. Thanks!

    I was talking to a USA distributor of Sonnet and White Nights, about this set because this contact has close communication with the White Nights factory and speaks Russian. I've had some issues with complex questions being answered before from both Nevskaya Palitra and Paul Rubens due to the language barriers. Long story short, the initial response was of surprise - that they were "not aware of any partnership / OEM manufacturing"... and that "at first glance this looks like a copy cat product". They have passed along the question to the factory but also just mentioned "since they aren't using our Sonnet logo, there is nothing we can do about a close copy"... The speculation makes me sad, why bother making such a close copy right down to the color order/numbers etc.? So now I'm just confused. If you find out anything about this possible partnership please let me know.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +1

      I will, and please let me know as well. Even if you were to copy I don't think they would be that close with color number any format. The texture on the pans is the same as is the way they paint out. I think if they were coping they would disguise those similarities. Painted side by side thy are uncanny. Maybe NP hires that range out to a 3rd party and that company makes them for PR as well. I can''t imaging trying to copy a student grade for a low price product.

    I need another set of watercolors like I need to be shot in the foot, but oh, the price, the tin, the full pans...! So of course I ordered it! I love my Pretty Excellent paints, and have been using them in some sketchbooks I stocked up on ages ago. Until recently I had never NEVER filled up a sketchbook, but I have been trying to paint almost every day, and I have one of my Arteza sketchbooks almost full! I also have been making bookmarks like crazy, and have been giving them away, and they seem to make people really happy in this time of Covid. Thanks for this great review! Can't wait to get them!

The Pretty Excellent one is on my wishlist...because I love that pretty aqua color! Lol! It just makes me happy to look at it! 😁❤

    I hope when you do reviews like this that people realize all the work you put in! Just the fact that you pulled out that binder and were able to go back to your swatches to compare both. And I've learned so much - I would never think to look up pigment info or colorfastness - but then I'm a crafter more than an artist. Still I find it helpful and educational. I made some flower prints on linen fabric - by pounding the flowers with newspaper over them - the colors aren't necessarily the same as the leaf or flower and can be very subdued, but they were beautiful when I added some watercolor to them. Well they faded and don't look good anymore - I don't even know what paint I used and at that time I would never have thought about if they were lightfast. I also did not treat the fabric with any medium which could be part of the problem. With my new knowledge I'm going to touch them up with my derwent inktense blocks and heat set them. I can't thank you enough for all the knowledge you share. I hope you and yours had a great Thanksgiving.

I currently have been using anilinky by koh-I-nor dye based paints. The mixing is not very good but ok for playing about.

    Thank you, Lindsay. I was very curious about these, as new sets are popping up all over, lol. These look worth the price but I’m sticking with Pretty Excellent for my “play”colors. Another comment mentions sticking with what you first see, and I wholly agree. PE’s are so vivid and transparent and I fell in love with them. I have “precious” issues and don’t always break out the good stuff. I did transfer the paint to pans and a tin and am loving them even more. If I decide to get a Sonnet palette seems like $’s would be the deciding factor. Thanks again 🌺 FYI both sets have coupons now.

    As for being in a slump, I have been following Ellen Crimi Trent on RUclips, and she does this thing every Monday called Mini Monday Madness, where she paints a 3" x 3" piece of watercolor paper and I started cutting my bookmarks into 3" x 6" strips and using the Minis at the top! I also took your Marsh painting and made it into a Mini at the top of my bookmarks. I have found doing a few minis help to get my juices flowing! I usually tape down 3 in a row, side by side, and do them 3 at a time. You might try that to get you going.

    I have some of those to try and review as well. I would be interested in seeing you review both a student watercolor set and a pro set by the same company to see what the actual differences are and why the other set is so much more expensive than the student set. Also thanks for explaining what the brochure with all the Chinese characters as well and the many color swatches are, that they are the pro set. I wasn't sure what to think of them! I also have the watercolor tube paint as I too wanted to see what the difference between them was and have already found that they don't have, at least in the set of tubes that I got, the same colors in the tubes as what was in the pans. I thought that was a bit odd, but I will be doing an experiment to see the difference.

    My mom was suggesting me to buy her a watercolour set at a certain store... I didn't feel like going to check what the brand and quality was, I've got school work to do, so I didn't want to spend 30 minutes to check it at the store.
    So, spending my time in searching for a nice watercolour paint set that may be a bit more expensive (but of higher quality) that I could order online is what I decided to do.
    After watching this review, I think buying that set is a good decision.
    My mother is getting into watercolour, so I'm just thinking that her having a set of nice quality paints will make her enjoy the results more.

    These paints look lovely. And yes I really am reminded of the sonnet set- not just the layout but also the colors as well. I still prefer the pretty excellent watercolors if I’m looking for transparency and I actually took them out of the plastic insert and into empty half pans. It was a bit of struggle but I managed to tear them out lol. I used that PE blue palette for storage of other pans. Also Lynsey do you think it is worth it to order the Roman szmal watercolors from Jackson at this time. The shipping is a bit pricey because of COVID. Also I’m not sure if you have heard but Schminke is on a big sale at Jackson’s if you are interested.

    Ooh, I was thinking of getting these! Lovely review. Pretty excellent looks great as well but I think I might go for the PR one if the paint qualities the same - bigger pans. Would you say they're better than the van Gogh watercolours? I find those ones glaze very badly and some of the colours have a chalky look to them.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +1

      I have only used van gogh tubes and I liked them. I'd think they were equivilant with PR being more transparent and better for glazing but VG being more lightfast.

    Normally when a student grade of an establish brand is outsourced, it's down the chain, so to speak. This is why most student sets are made in China, it's often the cheapest production to be had. So the thought that a Chinese company outsourced their student grade to a Russian company doesn't really make sense to me. It's far more likely that either the Sonnet were already outsourced and Paul Rubens was making them to start with, that Sonnet were recently outsourced, or that Paul Rubens decided to use the Sonnet set for their inspiration making their own student set.

I have watched quite a few of your reviews of watercolors from cheap to professional brands. I haven't seen you review the Faber-Castell watercolor pan sets.
