That was real what you said about having to mentally prepare yourself, not so much for how you'll react, but how other people are going to react. It can be surreal. Like you know it's not celebrated but it's astounding when experienced irl.
You and your hair are absolutely gorgeous. Some people do have this misconception about biracial/multiracial people only having type 3 hair texture. Your hair type and texture was meant just for you and is fit just for you. I honestly don't think you would look right with type 3 hair.
Moisture. Grows ur hair. I cut my hair 3x since 2011 and it back down 2 arm pits. U have 2 wet it . Cant skip. Leave n and shea butter to seal. Dont keep changing up products. . Black soap to shampoo I add peppermint 2 mine.. Aussie moist conditioner. Keep it simple and consistent.
Oh my goodness Sharmaine, I have never seen a young woman look so confident and comfortable in her own skin and by the way, you look just stunning and that afro! REALLY beautiful. Stay safe and stay at home, sending love from England 💖
Hair iz spiritual. Hair iz energy. Hair iz a creative expression. So people can say hair iz just hair But it's not. Watchin this reminded me of when I big chopped! Good times man. My brother was a hater but I winded up inspiring like 20 people in my family to also go natural. It was so cool to not only inspire when I was worried about what people would think but also to see their transformations. Confidence boosts, coming out of their shells by going natural. It's not just hair man💙💙💙💙
Watching this is giving me flashbacks to my big chop last year. I transitioned for 7 months and cut it a few days before my b-day. I started at the back tho. And my mom didn't talk to me for the entire day she was so mad 😂😂😂 but she's cool now.
you are absolutely gorgeous and your hair is amazing... i watched one of your videos where you said the boys didnt like you when you were growing up? i bet they are kicking their own asses now! i thoroughly enjoy your channel and you helping to bringing our 4c texture out of the darkness.. for so long i watched videos of girls who had the texture i WISHED i had.. it is so refreshing to see 4c being celebrated. keep up the good work
When I did my big chop it was a total accident. My hair was tangled so I was like I should just cut the tangles out not realizing i was going to cut off all of my relaxed hair. I loved it! I didn't really feel anything but happiness.
Joy-el you have such a gorgeous head of hair. I've been natural for 12 years and have big chopped my hair many, many times. Ironically I think I JUST learned how to truly care for it. Natural hair for me was so affirming.
Your natural hair is so beautiful. So thick and and luxurious looking. It makes me sad to know that racism has caused a lot of women and even men to chemically straighten it to be more accepted in society. 💔 Especially since it's such a beautiful texture. You look like royalty. 😍
Your hair is so beautiful and I admire you for being your authentic and raw self. You didnt try to cover up your hair with wigs or weave, you embraced your beauty and for that you are a inspiration to all❣ Thank you for sharing your journey with us❣
I have 4C also. I am 67 years old and I had never seen my natural hair since 1967.i had to have brain surgery in 2006 and had to have my hair cut off, so I let my son buzz it all off to the scalp. I had my surgery and I have not grown it back or put a perm or any other chemicals on it. It is 2022 and my journey has been WONDERFUL I said I will always wear it natural the way GOD has made it. God don't create junk. Thank you baby girl you ate a beautiful soul. Just be YOU.
I cut my hair 2 1/2 years ago in preparation for knee surgery. My hair was always difficult to manage due to 4-5 kinds of hair (my mother used to have a good cry before washing it). Back in the day, we didn't have hair products for our hair. Now we do and it's made life easier. I use Wen and Mixed Chicks since getting rid of the perm.
Man I'm doing compelled to jump through the screen and hug you due to happiness for you, due to compassion in understanding how much it helps to love your hair and because when you speak of your journey, you seem so vulnerable. I LOVE you. I am PROUD of you. You finally see the beauty we all always saw.
That was the first video of yours I saw, roughly a year ago around the time I had my own big chop! I love that video so much it almost made me wanna chop off my hair again lol I have to say you look so much better, and I'm not talking about just the hair: there's a different glow to you and you definitely look more confident! That fro looks beautiful!!
I completely get you when you say wearing your natural hair has helped you love yourself. I feel the same, I now love my hair. Even when my white family members at first laughed at it, now they have gotten used to it and have stopped the comments. It's one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I now get a ton of compliments, more than I ever got with straight hair.
Your videos have been very helpful to me. I grew up hating my hair. Only mixed race girl in my elementary school. 1 of 5 in total mixed race kids, and two were my brother and sister, in our entire town and two towns over. My sister has the easy wavy, wash and go hair. She has the most Native American looking genes out of all of us. I relaxed it at 12, and then it was a battle since then. I decided to chop if off on my last birthday, which was June 16th. I’ll be 40 this June, and I’m trying to just like my hair. Hopefully one day I’ll love it. It’s crazy that it took me 39 yrs to find someone that has similar hair to me. Thank you for starting this channel and sharing your hair journey. It’s amazing to not feel so alone.💜💜
I remember when you recorded that video. I can't believe that was 2 years ago 😱 I've been natural for 7 years now. It's so weird that I had a relaxer way back then because since being natural I can't imagine my hair being any other way. I'm so glad I made that choice.
Sharmaine, was it hard for you to watch this video? You looked so cute while watching it. I was subscribed at the time you made that video. Thanks for the update. I am so happy that you let your hair grow long so that we can see your progress. I hope that you never relax your hair ever again. It's too pretty!
Love, love, love that hair! It suits you so well! Us white guys love black girl's natural hair! You are just a baby doll with a great personality also and your boyfriend is so lucky to have you. Always know you are truly special!
I look at old pictures of myself holding on to damaged permed hair and I am horrified! I didn’t realize just how bad I looked. Best decision I ever made! We big chopped in the same year and I have never felt better in my life!
Omg you are stunning and the relaxed hair took that unique beauty about you. Your natural hair rocks way better than the relaxed hair. The relaxed hair made you look like everyone else. I love love love your hair and your look😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩
You were so methodical about cutting! I just chopped! 🤣 I'm so glad you decided to share w us! Love your channel, your personality is awesome! 💗 from NYC!
That smile is so cute Also, whenever this quarantine ends, can you make videos about your wedding preparation process and dress shopping. I would love to see them
I remember this, I was very excited for you & your journey. Your genuine personality locked me in immediately, you are very courageous, & your hair is flourishing. I love your videos & I am proud of you.☺️❤️
Aw! I remember your BC video. It's crazy that all four of the sections you had in that video would equal one quarter of a section of you hair now. Talk about growth. Lol.
I found your comments at 5:00 very intriguing. I am 4.5 months post relaxer. I noticed too that my relaxed hair has gone a little stringy. My sister had a major episode with stringy hair and had all these knots out of nowhere and had to cut quite a bit off. To me it seems like you have to keep relaxing your hair, and I mean not the roots but the shaft. Its like the shaft still needs the chemicals to stay 'healthy'. The shaft should not really go stringy when a relaxer is discontinued. I think there is more to these relaxers than we realise. I have to admit I am struggling with my 4b/c hair at the moment but I am determined not to go back to the creamy crack, its just at an awkward stage.
Your reaction when you did the 1st snip on the front of your hair was how i felt when I did my 1st big chop lol😂. You’ve come a long way, your hair has flourished soooo much, so beautiful🤩😍
Ahhhh!! Your hair is so beautiful! I have enjoyed watching your hair journey! I've never invested my time watching many natural RUclipsrs every video but I love your channel. I feel like your hair is the most similar to mines. Only difference is I have High Porosity hair. I can't wait until my hair gets your length and your hair is at waist length! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Best decision ever! Your hair is beautiful 😍 I love all the natural hair types but honestly 4c is my favorite. Thanks for letting us come along on your journey God Bless! 🙏🏾😇
I felt free when I did it! Waited 6 months too before I chopped. I will be a year in August. I cant wait until it grows though i dont really like the TWA much, I’m wearing wraps/ turbans and flat twisting under those. I’m low porosity with 4a/b
Second chop and can’t wait until year two! This time I’m dedicated to learning my hair and I commend you for doing that in front of the world 😂. It definitely is a learning process.
Ugh I love your hair! I feel like our hair is very similar even in color, so I kind of look at yours as my future and get excited hehe. I just big chopped in Feb
This may will make 1year since i had my big chop. I also have 4c hair and it's not easy to deal with lol... vinegar and lemon treatment will help dry scalp, try it. You are awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing more videos soon.
I remember watching this video two years ago.. I big chopped too Some months later and I'm loving my natural hair. So good to see yours flourishing too
i remember that video, and you were probably one of the few 4c girls I first came across. Major progress, can't wait to see the progress in the coming years.
My hair is the same color and it literally looked just liked that before I started my journey. I have no idea why I kept that mess in my head because it was never healthy like that. I keep my hair in twists to keep it stretched and moisturized. Your hair really looked good short also.
Joy-el! I have hair envy.😍 Your hair looks great. I big chopped about 2 1/2 years ago and I'm so glad I did. Still trying to figure out how to get mine to puff out the same on both sides...Much love from AZ. 🧡🧘🏾♀️
I just love this video it was like you are talking on my behalf. I've done my big chop 1/04/2019 and I've never looked back I just wish I could've known what I do now that as Miss India Arie says....I am not my hair(Liberated by being me completely natural really loving myself) thank you for your video's it just goes to show that there are other ladies out there that is going through the exact same things with their hair. Love your videos and advice. May God bless you and may you keep on teaching and Soaring 🕊
Jamaican black castor oil enflames my scalp too! I thought it was just me with my sensitive scalp. 😄 My hair is just like yours (has all the type 4 hair coils mixed in all over), so I really appreciate your channel. Gels don’t really work on my hair unless it’s drenched, but then it literally never dries so I’m not a fan anymore. My hair is still a twa, but I plan to stretch my hair to keep single stand knots at bay once it gets long enough to do so. I have seborrheic dermatitis, and tea tree oil really does help. I use coconut oil with 5 drops each of tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and rosemary oil in it, along with some bhringaraj oil a few times a week. All those essential oils help to soothe an irritated scalp, and to kill microbes and bacteria on the scalp that cause dandruff. And the Bhringaraj oil does so many things, including helping with dandruff and reducing hair shedding / retaining length. Try these out and see if they work for you!
Just did a big chop on the 29th of December 2020 right b4 new years. Starting fresh. Hope too have my hair length at my shoulders by this time next year. 🙏🏽🥰🤞🏽
This was fun to see. Even though when I first started following you I did go back but not that far back so cool to see your transition. To some hair is just hair but for others it’s amazing to see how this very simple thing that we are born with really makes a difference to how we feel and see ourselves. Now, what I would like to see, is maybe a blowout, maybe later in the year once it cools down. People rave about the RevAir being better than a traditional blow dryer but it’s pricey. Also, as you know I am partial to wash and go’s so more wash and go’s, definitely soaking wet hair makes a difference with gels. I want to note that your hair looks amazing and I’m not Sure if this is a top or a dress but this print that your wearing is super cute and if it is a dress it is absolutely gorgeous and a wedge would be just everything with it.
Hi Main youre doing such an awsome job on u tibe and awesome things in your life. Im so proud of you even i have learned alot from you. And you are inspiring me in so many ways. Keep up the awsome job . im sure you have done alot f or so m a ny ppl. Keep doing what you do you rock mija.
I really love your hair. It is gorgeous. 😍😘I have been here since your natural hair journey began and I big-chopped March 31 2019. I can't wait for my hair to reach your length. My hair is in the 5 inch to 8 inch range in length. Finger coils are my go-to style because it's low manipulation but just last wash day I did a wash and go. I also have different curl patterns: 4A/3C. As a longtime subscriber, I always look forward to your videos.
I literally big chopped like 5 minutes ago and I love my mini fro😂😂 I feel so free now thank godddd😭💯💯
YES CONGRATS!!!!
Congratulations!!! You're gonna love watching your hair do its thing.. 😊
rachybaby72 thanks I can’t wait to watch my hair grow healthy joy-el actually inspired me to take the big jump😂
Congrats
Congratulations!! Such a wonderful feeling!

Your hair grew so much while i feel I been at the same length for like ten years lmao.

naturalpn7 great tips thank yiu
Wearing natural hair "as is" helps alot. No excessive manipulation, or over styling. No forcing the hair to behave other than what it does naturally.
Your voice is really unique, you should look into doing voices for characters. Not being rude, or anything but I think you'd do well.
I was thinking the same thing! Her voice would ne great for an animated character
Funny enough, she actually sounds like a character (Peridot) from the cartoon Steven Universe.
ichosemyusernamewheniwasyounganddumb Right? She sounds like a mix of Peridot and Sadie. 😄
Tamara, Redguard, lvl. 30 lol I thought you said she sounds like ‘periodt’
Abeni Gold funny how people have been saying this since the first videos she posted lol.
Oh my goodness Sharmaine, I have never seen a young woman look so confident and comfortable in her own skin and by the way, you look just stunning and that afro! REALLY beautiful.

Congratulations sis. I hit my two years yesterday as well. We’re in the next chapter of our hair now. It’s been a fun and self-loving experience.

Woah, your hair has gotten so big since the last video I watched!
It looks absolutely beautiful! ❤️
My favorite Afro on RUclips!
I remember when you recorded that video. I can't believe that was 2 years ago 😱
I've been natural for 7 years now.
I agree, I started my big chop with the front row loc LOL, then had to commit, happy and won't look back, I wanted my loose natural hair back
I just re watched your big chop video. You started out with so much knowledge and self-acceptance. And clearly it paid off!
Amazing journey, I love how much you've embraced your hair, I've been subscribed for over a year now. Sending love from NYC!
Your hair is soooo BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing!
I like it. That’s not really short. Big difference between then and now. Wow.!!
I think your hair is absolutely BEAUTIFUL sis!! Nothing wrong with being yourself. I can't wait to see how much my hair grows over time
You’re ridiculously beautiful, but even moreso with your natural hair. 😍
Love, love, love that hair! It suits you so well! Us white guys love black girl's natural hair! You are just a baby doll with a great personality also and your boyfriend is so lucky to have you. Always know you are truly special!
Amazing growth! This goes to show that kinky type 4 grows! Great job with your hair 👏🏽
You are GORGEOUS! And, your hair really helps make your beauty complete!
your natural hair is SO beautiful i could cry
I look at old pictures of myself holding on to damaged permed hair and I am horrified! I didn’t realize just how bad I looked. Best decision I ever made! We big chopped in the same year and I have never felt better in my life!
Omg you are stunning and the relaxed hair took that unique beauty about you. Your natural hair rocks way better than the relaxed hair. The relaxed hair made you look like everyone else. I love love love your hair and your look😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩
Girl, you are such an inspiration. I remember that big chop video and your hair has been thriving.
Girl I love your content ❤ My hair is exactly like yours and I couldn’t feel more represented!
You were so methodical about cutting! I just chopped! 🤣 I'm so glad you decided to share w us! Love your channel, your personality is awesome! 💗 from NYC!
That smile is so cute
Also, whenever this quarantine ends, can you make videos about your wedding preparation process and dress shopping. I would love to see them
I wasn’t here for that video but I’ve been subscribed to you for a couple of months now I can’t believe that your hair was once that short💖💖💎
I remember this, I was very excited for you & your journey. Your genuine personality locked me in immediately, you are very courageous, & your hair is flourishing. I love your videos & I am proud of you.☺️❤️
The short hair was reaaaally beautiful on you :)
Aw! I remember your BC video. It's crazy that all four of the sections you had in that video would equal one quarter of a section of you hair now. Talk about growth. Lol.
Man I wish I had 4c hair 😭 my hair is type 4 but it's doesn't grow into the afro shape. My curls start weighing my hair down
Your natural hair is beautiful. I love the long natural curls.
I found your channel today and I have been binge-watching all day. IDK why but your personality is so genuine. Also, LOOOOVEEE YOUR HAIR!!
Your reaction when you did the 1st snip on the front of your hair was how i felt when I did my 1st big chop lol😂. You’ve come a long way, your hair has flourished soooo much, so beautiful🤩😍
So beautiful and full healthy hair😍
Your hair is literally everything
Ahhhh!! Your hair is so beautiful! I have enjoyed watching your hair journey! I've never invested my time watching many natural RUclipsrs every video but I love your channel. Best decision ever! Your hair is beautiful 😍 I love all the natural hair types but honestly 4c is my favorite. Thanks for letting us come along on your journey God Bless! 🙏🏾😇
You are beautiful. I love your natural hair so glad you started this journey.
You're GLOWING in this video 😍
I just passed my one year mark! I love seeing how far I've come, and you have been one of my biggest inspirations. ❤
Shani Jeanpierre congratulations I've got two more weeks before I reach my one year anniversary enjoy the journey I know I have
I felt free when I did it!
Can you do a video on showing us how you band your hair please
Congratulations on being 2 years natural, and not caving. Awesome to look at excerpts from your big chop video again. Your hair looks beautiful!
This is a flashback to such a courageous moment 🙏🏽😭🙌🏽 it paid off!!
Ugh I love your hair! I feel like our hair is very similar even in color, so I kind of look at yours as my future and get excited hehe. I just big chopped in Feb
And that is how I discovered you. I can’t believe it’s been 2 years! 👏🏾
This may will make 1year since i had my big chop. I also have 4c hair and it's not easy to deal with lol... vinegar and lemon treatment will help dry scalp, try it. You are awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing more videos soon.
You have such an interesting voice. It reminds me of a popular cartoon character I just cant think of who though
I remember watching this video two years ago.. I big chopped too Some months later and I'm loving my natural hair. So good to see yours flourishing too
i remember that video, and you were probably one of the few 4c girls I first came across. Major progress, can't wait to see the progress in the coming years.
The confidence with ur hair is amazingg
Your hair is beautiful!🧡
My hair is the same color and it literally looked just liked that before I started my journey. I have no idea why I kept that mess in my head because it was never healthy like that. I keep my hair in twists to keep it stretched and moisturized. Your hair really looked good short also.
You're sooo gorgeous I looooove your videos 😁😍
Yes, when I big chopped I felt so beautiful!! It is definitely freeing and it felt good to accept myself fully.
Your natural hair looks gorgeous b
You was so brave❤. I transitioned for 2.5 years because I refused to walk around with super short hair.
Your hair looks amazing 😉
Wow you got like 4 years growth in 2 years. I'm so jealous of your growth rate
Joy-el! I have hair envy.😍 Your hair looks great. I big chopped about 2 1/2 years ago and I'm so glad I did. Still trying to figure out how to get mine to puff out the same on both sides...Much love from AZ. 🧡🧘🏾♀️

If you use alovera it will grow even more. If you use it when you condition your hair and let it stay for a hour.
your hair looks soooo soft in the big chop video and it looks really nice now. btw do you have low or high porosity hair

Omg love you with short hair too!!!
I know this is a big shop vedio but I can't stop looking at your face omg 😻😩 , you got gorgeous hair 💛
I love that you watch yourself with so much compassion! ✨💛
Your hair looks so pretty 💕
If you have dandruff problem it’s best use a medicated/anti fungal shampoo like Nizoral or T-gel
Love the progress 🤗you've come so far
I absolutely love your channel...love your vibe.
