Well, yes and no. The ending of this movie was not in the original story. This version was very much influenced by the Nazi threat. I especially appreciate the way Tevye is more authoritarian in this version. To me, he's much more typical of a European Jewish father than the Tevye of "Fiddler."
When Goldie Tells Tevya Kava has Married, IT's FAR FROM COMICAL, Both Zero & Topal Did a Very Heartfelt Job! Maybe you Need to go See or re-watch Fiddler again.
This brief excerpt of TevyeMaurice Schwartz's adaptation of the classic Sholem Aleichem plays is indeed very powerful, just last night I had screened Fiddler On The Roof, and was so moved by this film that today I decided to research it's origin, which led me here. Teyve is next on my list of important films to purchase, and I will do so very shortly. I've watched Fiddler no less than 4x, possibly as many as 6x and each time, it moves me even more as it is also quite powerful, to the point where I actually feel guilty of how good I really have it. I wish to thank The National Center for Jewish Film for making this film - Teyve - possible not only to view, but also to purchase.
I first saw "Tevye" on PBS, years ago, and taped it on my VCR (that's how long ago!). It's so powerful that I bought a copy of the film from the NCJF when it became available.
My granny grew up in times like this--whenever I have a bad day I always think about this scene and my grandmother's family suffering and my day is not so bad anymore
Yes !! I just last night watched again Fiddler On The Roof [*of which a search of its origins brought me to this film excerpt here...] and I felt genuine sorrow for how good I have it, especially when compared to those living in and from Eastern Europe prior to WW I.... to the point where I feel I need to completely re-evaluate my way of living. You are so right, if I think of this scene and the suffering of those before me, I will indeed never have a bad day again.
The Dreyfus Affair and the book The Protocols of the Elders of Zion shook Sholem Aleichem's belief in the coexistence of Jews and gentiles reflected in this version of Tevye's response to Chava's converson.
chave is considererd dead for marrying outside the faith. Ironic that the actor most associated with the role Zero Mostel, also married outside of the faith. His wife was Catholic Italian.
Romans Chapter 8 "8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)" Cannot know God if you deny His Son, Jesus Christ.
The so-called "new testament" is full of so much forgery and pseudopygraphy, I don't know how anyone can take it, let alone the religion it's based off of (your religion) serious. It's such a massive joke that anyone can believe in that crap, now take your anti-semitism somewhere else, thanks. By the way, Jesus fulfills none of the prophecies in the Hebrew Bible. None of them. You're wasting your life on a false religion based around a false, possibly-made-up, prophet. Don't fall for the sunk cost fallacy, get out now while you can.
My friend, this last line which you have written "Cannot know God if you deny His Son, Jesus Christ." please know that the Old Testament came first, and that the New Testament came out of the O.T. Although I was baptized a Lutheran, I always was very interested in the O.T. lessons as a child, and today as a middle aged man, I find myself drawn to the O.T. specifically the Torah portions of the O.T. as these lessons today deeply resonate with me, for reasons which I cannot explain. I am also finding myself over the past year being drawn towards both the Jewish faith and lifestyle, again for reasons I cannot explain or deny. What I can say with absolute certainty is that my faith in G-d is stronger today than ever, and it is because of the Old Testament teachings, which I welcome you to re-visit and study from as well. May G-d be with you always.
All well and true, brother, but what has this to do with a bunch of ultra-orthodox Jews in Ukraine? Orthodox Christians are superior to Protestantism, patently, and yet the Jews have not converted there.
This original is very powerful. We are so used to the comic Broadway version that we forget how serious the original really was.
Well, honestly, the big show isn't all comedy. plenty of pathos to go around...have been in it, and know every word...this is very wonderful, indeed.

@@xenafan234the names are actually spelt Golde and Khave, sorry for my rudeness but I'm autistic and like things to be correct.
So sad ...the emotions are raw. Tevye der milchiger is a must read

Next I recommend Der Dibuk (1937) :)
It’s appearing on TCM this very moment😌🌸🌿
It's weird how much I can understand as a German speaker. Yiddish is sich an amazing language.
