You have to give Square credit; they took a joke-y, poorly-aged bit in the original game and turned it into perhaps one of the most iconic moments in gaming.

This works because Cloud is a 100% asshole and a total buzzkill for anything even remotely resembling chill and fun, consistently, throughout the whole game. But now, only this once, when he is put in between a frying pan and a fire, fighting to save his best (girl)friend Tifa and trying to his best to impress his new hyper-crush Aerith at the same time, with none of his previous male buddies there to be act cool in front of, does he finally break and fully embraces this ridiculous dance stage for what it is with his whole being, and gives it his absolute best. The result is such an incredible mixture of emotions, that every gamer I ever saw play this game could not even fathom what was unfolding in front of them. Everybody is laughing and/or crying during this sequence, rolling on the floor or with the jaws on the floor, girls are turning red-hot for Cloud more then ever, and guys drop gauntlets in a mute, unified sound of total respect for the amount of bravery and dedication Cloud showed here just by getting along with what was happening. Stepping completely outside of his introvert persona to get what he wants and owning it THIS HARD is what makes a man manly a 100 times more than slaying any monster and looking all epic while doing so.
...this scene is amazing. Truly, one of the most iconic moment in the history of gaming, and it will always be looked back at as such.
