I studied under him for one year. He is bigger than life and the best culinary teacher ever. He gave one valuable advice, he told me if you want to succeed in this industry you must travel around the world and study and work under as many different chefs possible, as I was preparing for my CMC certification (Certified Master Chef) conducted by the American culinary Federation), and for that, I owe him all my achievements in the industry. Thank you Chef Pepin for sharing your knowledge with me and many others.
Shibli Ziadeh I am just a humble amateur house cook. I seen all his videos, cutting techniques and such. I can cut super fast and accurate now without any efforts . The man is a genius, he is so able to relay very detailed important information. Without over glorifying it all . Love it , I am super jealous you had the honor to stand in his presence and see first hand .
Jacques is so humble, kind, authentic and down to earth, on top of being one of the absolute top chefs in the world. Watching him gives me comfort as if I had a world class French chef for a grandfather showing me how to cook. Can’t explain enough how much I love and appreciate him.
Watching him and Julia Child as a child on PBS heavily influenced me to go to culinary school and become a chef. "I don't wash my chicken" ,said with a smile to the camera. I remember watching that and laughing. They were so fun together. He influenced me, this little black girl in SC far more than Julia. I have his cookbooks in my library, not hers. I don't know why. But the man's technique shaped my formative years as a young amateur cook and then as a young chef. Now I teach others when I can. I am so glad he's still around and still cooking.
@M L I would suggest washing chicken if you ever shop at Chinese grocery stores. They have weird yellowish stuff underneath the wings and some still have bits of feathers stuck to the skin.
M L Chinese here and my mother is highly disgusted with anyone who doesn’t wash their chicken. And you’d be wrong to say her cooking would be flavorless.
What lovely memories. Thank you for sharing. I, too, loved watching Julia and Jacques. Though I never pursued cooking professionally, it's a hobby of mine that I love. And I adore Jacques.
True, but what is more impressive to me is that his cooking has no borders. He's a classically trained French chef, but cooks food from everywhere, Italy, Spain, Asia, even Southern Creole and Soul Food. He's a once in a generation chef and he cares about good food and good company far more than being "traditional"
It’s sad that he’s kinda forgotten about by newer generations. So many “TV” celebrity chefs now. He is one of the all time greats that should be cherished always Along with Julia
I met Jacques & Julia in the 90’s at their book signing at a culinary shop on California street in San Francisco. They both were the same in person as they appear on the PBS shows and were very gracious in signing my book. A truly wonderful experience.
When asked about his passion I thought he would actually say art. The man can draw and paint. Dude is an artist indeed. Jacques Pépin is one of my all-time favorite people.
@Marcel Audubon Depends on the context. You seem to not understand literary devices. Calling a respected older gentleman "dude" emphasizes the statement. One can praise Meryl Streep on an acting performance by saying "Girl killed it." Again, for emphasis. However, Dude and Girl would not be appropriate in other scenarios obviously. Addressing Pépin, you would never say "nice to meet you, dude."
@@tosht2515 the only thing the use of "dude" emphasizes is what a *dullard* the person using it must be ... to pretend it's some sophisticated literary device just emphasizes your deep insecurity
Because of this man, I learned to finely cook an omelette, perfect scrambled eggs, love leeks, and like brussel sprouts! (Working on anchovies). I am still learning by watching his shows now. What a treasure he is.
I was a little too young for Julie's show at that time. But watching it later, I very much enjoyed her sense of humor. Funny thing about Jacques Pépin, even decades later, his shows do not seem dated at all.
"Is it an act of love if the only thing you can reliably do is clean up?" "Yes" he says, while nodding and chuckling. You gotta love that man. Great interview Jane, thanks!
Mr. Pepin has been my inspiration in the kitchen since I was 15 and I'm 45 now. Thank you Mr. Pepin for giving me my love for food and inspiration to try new things. Forever grateful!
Mr. Pepin mentioned that "It's an act of love to cook for someone." I'd like to add to that it's also an act of love to pick vegetables and fruits all day long just so we all can have food at the most affordable rate. And for that, I want to thank everyone who've come over the border to do us all that most generous favor.
I feel such peace & what I can only describe as GOODNESS from this entire show. When I'm feeling stressed or tired or sad or frightened about how crazy our country has become (in the last 3 years especially), I can watch a segment & immediately feel grounded in a more hopeful, tranquil place -- plus, I learn a lot! Thank you, Sunday Morning, for the great service you do for all of us. I can't imagine why these videos don't have millions of views.
I have learned from and loved watching and reading Mr. Pepin’s recipes for decades. I often do back and watch again and again to really keep learning! Thank you sir.
By watching him on pbs Not only I learn how to cook at home I also start practicing to be a better human being, he never was bashful what a genuine human being. Happy life Pe’pin
Most of my adult life I have watched and enjoyed all of Jacques cooking shows he is the best in my book his knife skills are the most impressive and his explanations of how to prepare something is so easy to follow. His cooking is down home and artistic at the same time. I loved Jacques and Julia together in the kitchen it was so much fun to watch. I love Jacques I feel as though he is family I am sure so many viewers feel that way after being in our lives for so long .
*I used to love watching his cooking show when I was a little girl in the 80’s. Lots of great chefs had shows on PBS back then; Jacques Pepin, Julia Child, Justin Wilson, Paul Prudhomme, The Frugal Guormet, Pasquale’s Kitchen, The Urban Peasant, just to name a few. I miss those shows.*
Justin Wilson! My family lived in New Orleans from 1980 to 1990. I am Italian and love cooking but knew nothing of creole cuisin and Justin and his stories. Make me laugh just remembering
I love his style he's so simple yet so full in knowledge. I would love to meet him. I actually have done 3 or 4 of his recipes and they were easy, delicious and beautifully looking. I love u Mr Jaques Pepin ps: butter makes it all better😘
We have been watching him for almost the entire time he has been on TV. Our favorite episodes are ones with his daughter and grand-daughter. You can see and feel the love. A great man that also taught my wife and I how to be better cooks. Merci!
Still watching Jacques Pépin after all these years . There are a number of newer chefs out there, but there is no one better to learn from. No matter what I’m making I look to see if there’s a Jacques recipe too .
It was nice to see Mr. Pepin give great answers, even if some of the questions seemed less than the most dignified. Why did CBS ask a woman who doesn't know how to cook to interview one of the world's leading chefs?
His book La Technique really was a game changer when it came out cause it was the first of it's kind with how meticulous it was in illustrating cooking techniques
I am a professional with over 25 years of experience in the food service industry, I really enjoy these annual episodes of Sunday Morning. This year's episode was fantastic, well done! (no pun intended). ;))
Our local PBS station in SF wouldn't be the same without Jacques. The other comments below about his being a national treasure are so very true. Thank you CBS for putting him (& Julia) front & center this Thanksgiving. (& where would we be without this wonderful immigrant to our country -- thank goodness Trump wasn't in office back then.)
Really cool story. Turned down the white house for Howard Johnson’s. Wow. The series he did with his daughter was the best. She couldn’t do a damn thing right. She said in one episode “I’m going to go set the table”, and he said “yes I think you’d better”🤣
The man inspired two generations of chefs!! I only learned of him a coupla years ago... There is an instinctive understanding of food in his articulation and a flair that is simple in its genius! What a treat it would be to eat meal prepared by him!
There are 2 people who I try to immolate, my mother who’s no longer with us and JP, who both would, and still does, make everything in the kitchen seem possible ~
Jacques Pépin is unique. Mild-mannered but humorous and engaging. Supremely skilled but ever humble. A celebrity who is known throughout the world, but an artisan at his core who loves his trade and has contributed so much to our appreciation of food in this country. Perhaps these new, younger, obnoxious twits like Gordon Ramsey should take lessons from him.

Chickens are washed at the Factory and spend their time in a watery bag before you buy it. So the question of washing them at home or not is mute
We’re so lucky he immigrated to the United States! What a great ambassador for French culture and cuisine. Nice story, Sunday Morning.

It will be a sad day when the world loses a treasure like Jacques. Let us appreciate and celebrate him while we still have him. A legend.
I don’t wanna think about that 😢 he’s such a sweet man

Cooking is passion. The act of love is cleaning up and doing the dishes.
I adore this man. Disappointed this was only about six minutes long.
He and Julia were probably the two greatest influences of my culinarily life. Both so powerful presences in the kitchen.
Jacques Pépin is a national treasure. I love watching him cook. It's like watching Michelangelo paint.
