This is a deeply heart-warming interview with a wonderful person and chef. When I was a zoology grad student at UC Berkeley in the 1980’s, I found a copy of Everyday Cooking with Jacques Pépin (2982) on the MVZ’s book giveaway table. I think it might have belonged to my retired advisor Frank Pitelka, a distinguished ornithologist, opera enthusiast, and foodie (he would frown on that term). Over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate Jacques Pépin more and more. His cooking demos on PBS and elsewhere are so much more appealing to me to the faux challenges and ‘throw downs’ of the celebrity chefs of today’s Food TV. I’m so glad he is still with us and still teaching us. And I’m still working to master his French omelette.

  • @Meggs23

First, let's applaud Monsieur Pepin for not only always having a glass a wine handy but here having TWO. ... I've studied his videos for 10 years now to learn how to cook. I make a mean omelette because of his famous video. ... 13:16 "Everyone is the same in the eye of the stove" ... I highly recommend his early biography "The Apprentice" where he talks about starting at 11 years in a kitchen on a giant iron wood burning stove and only having 1 day a month off to go home to wash his clothes. ... Growing up in WWII in France, he knew the value of every ingredient and you see him to this day scrape every drop out of a bowl and value every morsel of food. He, with Julia Child, brought cooking to Americans and, even in the pandemic, responded with thoughtful recipes and taught us how to conserve but still create. He's lived through so much and still works hard and with a smile. Happy Cooking!

I shall share this and save this interview as one of my treasures. I too am a Pepin living in Edmond, Oklahoma. We are the same age and probably from the same ancestry. I cannot tell you how dear you are to me and how much I enjoy watching you cook and listening to you talk in this interview. My feelings and memories of long ago are the same. I totally agree “wonderful bread and butter cannot be beat as my favorite thing to eat”. God bless you and may we both have many more years you are a blessing to all of us Messr. What I've learned most from Chef Pepin is not necessarily how to cook, although he is an incredible teacher, but how to enjoy and celebrate life. His enjoyment of cooking, his insistence of cooking with friends and family, and his unbridled enthusiasm for doing what he loves has been a tremendous inspiration.

I love that... "Everyone is the same in the eye of the stove".
Chef Jacques Pépin is my all-time favorite Chef. His manner is so laid back & his years of experience show with everything he does. I love that he gives alternatives for ingredients & explains the reasons for using them. I have made tons of his recipes; they are not overly complicated, they don't take all day to prepare, & they taste/look divine. I didn't know that he made short videos for cooking during the Pandemic; I will have to look for them.
    Merci Beaucoup, Chef Pépin.
It would be a great joy for me to be able to join you in the kitchen, sit down & eat the food we have made together, & listen to you tell stories about your life as a Chef. Please, Please, Please, Chef Pépin, if you see this, may I come to visit you in Connecticut; I'll bring your favorite wine.

Getting kids into the kitchen is the best way to get them to eat. They already have buy-in because they made it themselves. This was how I got my son to eat salads. He would help mix up the vinaigrette salad dressing. He would whisk it, first with the electric whisk - great fun for a little kid - then with the regular whisk. We would taste it together and it included Dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar! My good friend would get her kids to eat "tasty leaves" (salad) and "trees" (broccoli). Our kids are now in college now and they're great eaters. My son is a decent cook as well.

Yep. Cooking should be an adventure & not a chore. When you get to pick what goes into your food & how it's prepared, it tastes so much better, AND to top it off, you get the closeness of family time.

They did an episode together where he showed her how to cut up & cook a whole side of meat. In the end, he turned to her & said, "you're not going to do this, are you"? Smiling sweetly, she shook her head & said, "no". I so pictured my Father & I interacting the same way. I smiled & then cried... my Father had already passed away.
