Alex from Madagascar
then again they all have sad and dark back stories so everyone wins
Alex - Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Guy - The Croods: A New Age
Princess Fiona - Shrek franchise
Branch - Trolls
Po - Kung Fu Panda 2
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III - How to Train Your Dragon 2
1) Chicken run. any chicken.
2) Home. The Gorg.
3) Monsters Vs Aliens. Most the monsters.
RJ - Family died from a weed hacker.
Po from kung fu panda
The mother death made me cry
Po’s backstory is honestly insanely dark, even by regular film standards. To have genocide in the conversation is already incredibly sad
It’s no wonder why he takes the number 1 spot on this list.
Why Po but not Aster from Rise of the guardians. If Pitch's book backstory counts then him slaughtering literally every other member of Aster's race to get something Aster was protecting counts too.
@@KestralKuthule
Aster's backstory wasn't fleshed out like Po's was, and his character arc took a backseat due to not being the main character. Also, most people who watched the movie have never read the books. I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just that Bunnymund isn't really given enough screentime and it's not part of the bigger plot of RotG so it isn't given as much attention while Po's backstory was the entire plot of the 2nd movie. Maybe if DreamWorks ever decides to make a Guardians sequel(they most likely won't so don't get your hopes up), then they'll include it.
Honestly, as a kid, the lesson of letting go of your past to be reborn anew into something stronger was something that resonated with me at a deeper level.
@@utopian4769 I don't disagree but if you're using book backstory for Pitch then Aster's counts too.
Plus Aster's is arguably sadder then Pitch's.
Let's not forget in an alternate timeline where Shrek wasn't born, Fiona had to free herself, stay hidden with hundreds of other ogres who don't know about her curse, and gave up on true love.
Yes. I think you would call that an alternate backstory, but I guess that counts as HER backstory, making it (or those backstories) one of the saddest produced by DreamWorks. Maybe no matter how many timelines a character has, it counts as their story?🤔
😂yeah probably. Sadly, I actually dk who Raphael Sbarge is. But sure😁
Even sadder about Alex's dad is that it was one of the last roles of Bernie Mac who died around the time the movie was released.
That's probably why he wasn't in Madagascar 3.
@@alexmapp5444 Alex's mother Florrie isn't in 3 either. Although her name wasn't mentioned in the film, her name is mentioned in the novelization.
he died?!!!!!!!!??????
@@taneshajones8372 Bernie Mac actually died a few months before Madagascar 2 came out.
nooooooooooooooo
I think Hiccup should have at least gotten an honorable mention. His mother was abducted by a dragon when he was an infant and grew up with no friends outside his mentor Gobber. His father was cold and distant towards him (disappointed that Hiccup wasn't more like him) and the entire village hated him just for being himself.
Yeah I think Shrek should have been on the list, I mean he was Judged by everyone long before people even knew him. not to mention it's implied His father tried to eat him
@@Samurai-es5wh And if you saw the Broadway musical you find out that his parents kicked Shrek out of his house at an early age, having to survive since childhood on his own.
Yah
Lucky Prescott also should’ve gotten an honorable mention because her mother died when she was just a baby and she grew up never knowing her.
@@emilianoserrano6937 I’ve seen the musical twice.
Poor Fiona, her backstory is more tragic than I remember. Even though she escapes on her own in a reality where Shrek was never born, she's still under the witch's curse.
Worse, she would have been 'rescued' by Charming and he probably wouldn't exactly have been understanding when his "True Love's kiss" didn't work.
And that Witch who cursed Fiona ironically was Fairy Godmother.
@@disneyvillainsfan1666 I was about to comment that haha
@@Sigart Since FGM planned the whole thing, it wouldn’t have been true love anyway.
Or in theory the Fairy Godmother's, hence the Queen's lack of trust in the fairy.
Megamind's origin breaks my heart the most. I find that out of all of the bad guys in modern fiction, his sad backstory is the most relatable as discrimination still is the leading cause in so much sadness in the world.
Same. Made me feel so bad for him
One scene that I will never forget in Megamind was a School Photo where Young Megamind was far away from the other students. Yes he almost set the schoolhouse on fire in a previous scene, but Separating him from the Other Students and Teacher in a Class Photo wasn't exactly helping. 🙄
Not sure yet if he’s on the list, but Hiccup’s backstory is so sad. He lost his mother as a baby, was treated like an outcast throughout his childhood, then his father was killed by his best friends, only to lose that friend in the last movie. It’s heartbreaking.
Tigress from Kung Fu Panda has a tragic backstory as well
Tigress
Moses backstory from The Prince Of Egypt is one of the best moment I loved from DreamWorks, after all it's faithful to the historical accurate from the Bible also not to mention the EPIC Deliver Us Musical.
The Prince of Egypt was the best DreamWorks proyect at all.
@@eugeniapatroncosta920 Agree
Fiona is a sad, yet great character. I didn't even realize she stayed in that tower for over 20 years, counting the days like a prison sentence for her true love to come rescue her. :(
Here I thought Rapunzel being in her tower for 18 years was bad.
And what’s worse is that Rapunzel had no prior frame of reference. She was in that captivity since she was a baby, she never realized she was suffering until the truth came out. Meanwhile, Fiona was a young girl deliberately sent away like a problem her parents couldn’t handle anymore, and no one came for her for *decades*. Rapunzel had the benefit of blissful ignorance, while Fiona had to grow up eventually realizing that she was a burden sent away to be resolved by others.
Its barely much of a difference wtf
I would argue Rapunzel had it worse. Fiona was a little girl when she was sent to her tower, plus she wrote in her Diary that she was friends with Sleeping Beauty and other Princesses. So she had memory of her Parents and Kingdom.
Meanwhile in Disney's Tangeled, Rapunzel was kidnapped as a Baby who wasn't even half a year old, and locked in a tower growing up thinking that Gothel was her biological mother. She didn't even know she was a princess until later in the film.
Her mental health is quite well for someone who lived 20 years in complete isolation (except for the dragon). The dragon must have been both like a prison guard and a friend to her. She must also have brought Fiona food since thats the only way for her to get food without escaping the tower.
Arguably it was just as bad given how often she was gaslighted and was verbally abused
It's incredibly heartbreaking learning about Po's backstory, the look of distraught on his mother as she bids him goodbye and leaves him always brings me to tears because she knows that even if she is killed, her son will be okay.
Po's backstory is really sad. He lost his mom when he was a baby and his dad had to fight back to protect his village and pandas. But I was happy to see them get reunited when Po's dad learned that Po is alive.
I’m still wondering how Po’s Dad survived Shen’s attack.
I think pitch black is one of the best dreamworks villains of All time.
While most Holiday characters represents something posetive, he represents negative. Darkness. The feeling of being forgotten and in darkness is actually realistic and parallels jack frost, which makes him an antagonistic Version of Jack frost, what Jack could have been if his feeling of Isolation corrupted him. Not to forget He was so close to win, if it wasn't Jamie still beliving in the holiday characters.
He truly is a well written villain in my eyes.
How did I not see that? I love Rise Of The Guardians, but this just makes it better now!
Did u know his daughter is Mother Nature!!!
@@Colette735 when Was that mention?

Guys listen up! Some weeks ago i watched a del Toro's post on twitter about Rise of the guardians. I commented by writing "still hoping for a sequel" and ...
Peter Ramsey liked my comment!
So maybe there's still hope! ❤
You guys TOTALLY should've put Hiccup from the "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise on this list. His backstory was one of the most tragic not only in DreamWorks Animation, but in animated film in general. His mother (whom he took after) was separated from him when he was a baby, he was raised by a strict, overbearing father who didn't understand him, his only friend growing up was his mentor Gobber, he was mercilessly bullied by all the kids his age (including that biatch Astrid), and the whole village hated him just because he couldn't be something he wasn't. It wasn't until he met Toothless that his whole life changed for the better.
Hiccup, Alex and Po have sad moments, they can relate to each other and honestly I don’t blame them.
Hiccup never knew his mom until the sequel and lost his dad
Alex was kidnapped when he was little
Po was a baby seeing his mom die
The Penguins of Madagascar are my favourite DreamWorks characters 🥰 They're amazing!
True ❤
Mine is Donkey from Shrek.
Same!
Mine is Spirit
The closest thing I had to a brother passed away, claimed by this goddamn pandemic. My mama died from heart problems when I was a toddler, and my grandfather. Well, I watched him slowly waste away and die. Someone dealing with Alzheimer's is a sad, sad sight.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I practically saw my stepmom pass away over a year ago. Hear loved ones falling almost left and right. My family already had 3 funerals this year.
Toy Story’s Jessie’s backstory makes me cry every time 😢
Also both Disney’s Tarzan and Nemo’s backstories pull at my heartstrings 💔
I think Kitty Softpaws has the most tragic backstory, she got declawed by the people who took her in when she was younger and she never understood why (i.e. they cut off fingers and toes without her consent).
These are sad especially Po’s backstory I remember seeing Kung Fu Panda 2 with my best friend and we both started crying after seeing Po’s backstory
I watched Kung Fu Panda 2 as well and I love the Kung Fu Panda franchise😊
I don't think that Pitch Black is really a villain, but a Guardian in his own way. The other Guardians may represent wonder, hope, dreams, memories and fun, but I think Pitch represents protection, growth and strength. Fear may seem dark and negative, but it can be very helpful. Children need to feel fear in order to both stay safe, overcome that fear and to grow as a person.
👏
Did u know his daughter is Mother Nature!!!
@@Colette735 I remember hearing about that.
That does make sense
@@silashurd3597 Right?
#1 Shouldn't come as a surprise, his backstory was almost as sad as Aang's. Shen was basically his version of Fire Lord Sozin.
Megamind(when he was still evil) and Professor Poopypants would be a dangerous evil genius duo
It would be debatable if Metro Man and Captain Underpants could truly stop them!!
Megamind is such a masterpiece
Ur just spitting facts
It’s one of the best DW movies tbh🌟🎇
I'm beyond ecstatic you included Pitch Black from Rise of the Guardians.
I've always argued that he is the most tragic character of the whole story and has always gotten the sharpest part of the shortest stick, because he truly lost everything when he was driven mad by creatures that possessed him.
Guys listen up! Some weeks ago i watched a del Toro's post on twitter about Rise of the guardians. I commented by writing "still hoping for a sequel" and ...

Fingers crossed. I still say they could do Pitch's backstory as a sequel just fine.
Where the hell is Branch?!
Oh, right. Everyone thinks his backstory's a joke.
I don't think it was a joke his backstory, his backstory scene when his grandmother died in the Chef's hands while she sacrificed her life to save Branch, I know it's so sad.
Branch’s tragic backstory breaks my heart 💜 every time I watch that scene, I always feel so sorry 😢 for Branch.
That story tells us why Branch doesn't sing or even smile. I don't see why that should be considered a joke.

Did they just forget about Joseph???
He was sold into slavery by his own brothers, then got a master who trusted him, was betrayed again when the wife falsely accuses him of assaulting her, gets thrown in jail, then after getting love and power and saving Egypt, he has to face the trauma that his brothers left with him, realize he never got to say goodbye to his mother before she died, then FINALLY get the closure he needed when they admit what they did to him and show remorse.

Hiccup and his father when they thought they have lost the other family member that is the mother and wife by being separated and missing

It's always the Dreamworks characters with the saddest backstories are some of the most interesting ones.
I know, even more interesting than Disney character backstories.
@@maxmeidl4909 Agreed.
Agreed.
I'm pissed Drago isn't on the list. Or at least has a honourable mention.
I don't care if we got to hear very little of his backstory, what we got was enough to make me feel sad and sorry for him.
Poor Alex. I sympathize with him completely.
Branch should be on this list. He suffered a lot of emotional pain from his childhood, losing contact from his brothers and watching his grandma get eaten is enough to scar you for life. Plus growing up with no one else to look out for him and suffered PTSD and trauma for 20 years and everyone used to call crazy or paranoid in his 20s is enough to make him feel sympathetic and relatable.
It’s bad enough that Fiona was cursed, but she was shielded from doing any activities. Plus Fairy Godmother never wanted her to marry an Orge, but her shallow jerk Prince Charming.
I think Fairy Godmother was the one who cursed Fiona in the first place so her son Prince Charming would give her the true love's kiss, marry her, and become king.
Like how most mothers just want their sons to become doctors.
I knew Professor P. Would be on this list. By the time his entire full name was revealed, I wasn't really laughing at him anymore, I just felt embarrassed for him.
Fun fact: Hugh Jackman and Ian Mckellen were also hero (Jackman) and villain (Mckellen) against each other in the X-Men franchise.
I see Fiona, I click
3:21 “My baby is alive!” God….. for so many years they thought he died or worse
Shrek
Madagascar
Kung fu panda
Absolutely my favorite
Same, but including Rise of the Guardians, the Prince of Egypt, Spirit and the How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy.
I find their stories sad, but there are other characters with sad backstories as well. Bunnymund for example. He's the last Pooka survivor that Pitch caused I remember something when he held Sophie, he has a expression that he missed someone that he cared for. I don't know who. But I do find Bunny's story sad as well. But he keeps going strong to inspire other kids and give them hope.

Rise of the Guardians is an underrated gem but Pitch Black is a great DreamWorks Villain
It’s sad how it failed, it’s mostly the reason why DW has had to cancel a lot of good looking movies and such
He had me interested in looking into the books, even as a young adult.
Are you forgetting that Guillermo del Toro helped make this movie?
@@olvialee7221 That makes the movie even more underappreciated.
Toad’s flush wasn’t really the rat’s fault it was the prince’s father’s fault because he flushed him. Charles might have had them play together

Definitely Lenny from sharktale
#1: Oscar (Shark Tale) He was a nobody, that simply wanted to be a somebody.
And Lenny.

@@CaptainCretaceous91, poor Lenny, having to face disappointment from his carnivore family while being a closeted vegetarian, and then his golden boy brother dies by mistake. Pretty sure the writers behind his backstory didn't exactly mean to make his backstory as an allegory for an LGBTQ+ coming out story, but we got that, and he gets loved for it, my boy..
The top DreamWorks Characters With the Saddest Backstories that I recognize are Alex from Madagascar Escape 2 Africa, Megamind from Megamind, Dr. Octavius Brine / Dave from The Penguins of Madagascar, Guy from The Croods franchise, Princess Fiona from the Shrek franchise Pitch Black from Rise of the Guardians and Po from the Kung Fu Panda franchise

I shed tears for Guy. That was sad
Branch from Trolls 😭
I’m actually watching all DreamWorks films right now and I gotta say these characters really have tragic backstories
You know both Puss and Kitty have sad backstories as well. Puss was a hero after doing something noble, but then his brother betrayed him and made Puss lose everything all because Humpty couldn't be happy for him. As for Kitty Softpaws, she was a stray who longed for a family and a home to call her own, and for whatever reason, the family who took her in got declawed, and she grew to distrust everybody she met. And it only gets a bit sadder for these two in the new movie, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in watching.
Diane Foxington
Let's not also forget Perrito as well.
I always had a feeling po would be a number one you village being attacked while your young is dark not to mention traumatizing. I also feel like Shrek and Hiccup should have gotten a mention as well

Crazy, how emotional you can get because of a movie. I cry in almost every sad scene.
What makes flashbacks of the Panda Genocide in KP2 better are at first, they’re animated in 2D, showing that Po really doesn’t except as fact but when he accepts that it happened it turns into 3D
Megamind has a sad story. He is the last one of his kind because his home planet was sucked into a black hole so he was was shoot into space and was on his own. If Metroman wouldn't be here Megamind would have a live of luxury but his spaceship thingy was knocked away by Metroman so Metroman lived a life of luxury instead of Megamind. At least he got his happy ending. 😶
There's an actual theory that it was Fairy Godmother who cursed Fiona so her son could become king.
I religiously read the Captain Underpants books. Professor Poopypants came from a place where everyone had funny names.
Why is Pitch on here out of all Rise of the guardian characters? Movie Jack legit died with his baby sister watching then got amnesia and his only known interaction in 300yrs was with Aster(Bunny) who seems to hate him.
Book Aster survives as the sole member of his race on a completely different planet. Book Tooth watched her family be wiped out along with her mum's race. Nicholas ST. Claus was an orphan raised by bandits and has probably the most stable backstory.
I know we don't know toothless's origin but I took the liberty of making one and it is sad:
Years ago the Night Furies were a most deadliest and intelligent of all the dragons however in their pack was the Royal Fury a Night Fury that could literally harness lightning itself more dangerous than a Skrill's lightning, the Royal Fury had a litter of Ospring especially the runt of the pack a hiccup if you'd say, one day the Night Fury's Island was invaded by dragon hunters alongside a fleet of crazied Death Grippers and thislead to an all out battle, the Royal Fury fought them all of valiantly but all the Furies were killed except for the runt so he ordered his son to runaway as he would hold them, when the runt escaped the Royal Fury stared down against four Death Grippers and a cloaked man with a French accent.
When the runt got far away from the island it saw a humungus explosion of lightning occur and realised that everyone he knew was gone, years later he reached Dragon Island and encountered an angry Whispering Death who tried to attack him but the Fury gnashed his teeth so hard at him it scared the Whispering Death, however both dragons were right infront of a cave entrance of a the Red Death who scared of the Whispering Death but saw what the Fury could do so he mind controlled him to help his dragons collect food for him, the Furies job was to take out any catapult towers and other things that could pose threat to the flock.
However on one raid the Fury was shot down and tied up causing him to crash into the cove but also crash through the forest and ripping of his tail finn rendering him incapable of flight.
It's totally Poopypants' fault. The guy clearly never heard of name changing.
Victim blaming is not okay dude /sarcasm

What about Branch from Trolls
Fiona, Megamind, and Po
What about Branch. Being abandoned by his brothers as a baby and then losing your grandmother a couple years later blaming yourself in the process. Spends much of his life alone, angry, and bitter towards everyone as a result. Sort of reminds me of me as someone from a family of 5 siblings. I'm the oldest Joseph or Joey, Bryan, Camilla, Fred, and Benjamin or Benny. We were close as a family often treating Camilla like the youngest of the family such as messing around with her when it came to boys, but we we're also protective of her when she started to like them. We lost her in a car accident almost 3 years ago when we were heading home from a party. I was alright after a while, but Camilla didn't make. The trolls were her favorite movies. To her memory.
My saddest backstory is where
I was mono from little nightmares, but my evil great grandmother wants to kill me for the accident of my sister. "Alone." Then i killed her, my grandmother for good so she won't kill me anymore, so me and amy turned into murder drone's so my evils of family won't find me
I guess that makes me a dreamworks character
Po is truly heartbreaking.
Another sad backstory was how Sherman met Mr Peabody, he was found in a box in a alleyway in the rain then later Mr Peabody took him and went to court and chose to adopt him, the reason being was actually so sad, because Mr Peabody was never adopted by anybody and haven’t had a family, so he wanted to provide one for Sherman.
If Fiona spent over 20 years in the tower, her mental health is surprisingly well for such a long period of complete isolation and no social interaction except for the dragon. This makes me wonder, were Fiona and the dragon friends during her time in the tower? Did the dragon bring her food? But she was still waiting for a knight to kill the dragon? After the dragon joins the Shrek team, Fiona gets along with her quite well so they were probably friends before, but at the same time the dragon must have been like a prison guard for her.
It gives them character.
no honorable mentions wow i'm shocked
I expected Yi from Abominable to end up on this list.
I think the saddest one was Dave’s because it happened so many times
I think Branch from Trolls should've gotten an honorable mention. His backstory when his grandmother died after saving him from the Bergens was very heartbreaking.
I know right
Princess Fiona’s backstory may have been tough for her, but it’s no where near the level of darkness of Po’s backstory as he escapes a genocidal massacre of the pandas.
Ik that im probably gonna get intense backlash for this, but its MY opinion. I really think that Kitty Softpaws should have atleast been in honourable mentions. She was a stray cat living in the cold streets, a couple came and took her in, she genuinely felt safe and thought she could trust them, only to be backstabbed. Kitty was declawed by her owners. If you dont know what declawed means, heres a small defintition. Torture, pain and its just horrific. Its like cutting of a humans finger up to the knuckle. After that she was abandoned by them and she ran away. After all that she meets Puss, thinks she can trust him, they get close, only for him to leave her alone at the alter. ( ik this video was posted before the last wish was out but still) so yeah. I think Kitty shouldve gotten honorable mentions.
Where was RJ?! His last family died from a weedhacker!
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Joseph, from “Joseph: King of Dreams”. It’s one thing to be ostracized and hated by your enemy, but for your own brothers to torment you, fake your death and sell you into slavery? Brutal
Jack frost himself has a sad backstory in rise of the guardians, without needing the books info, surprised he and Hiccup didn't make this list. Or toothless, being the last of his kind and all...
