It's just a cassette recording of one of my ideas, a time before I used a cd to play background noise and got a "warning" they also demonized it 😂 jokes on them, I don't make any money here anyway 😂
Another vote for Schallers. As you say though, make sure you keep an eye on how tight the nut is! I like how they have a fail-safe in that if the lock fails for some reason gravity still holds the guitar in the U-shaped bucket. Unless you don't believe in gravity...
Blkjakk suggested using loctite. Probably a good idea. I have never had one fail and also have never let one become victim of Earths magnetic and gravitational forces. ☮
E clips.. Those are always fun.. haven't messed with them on straps, but when I have do disassemble small parts that use them.. I get my pick on them and then cover the part with a towel to keep them from going off to see their lord and maker and sending me to the hardware store to replace them. The screws on the shaller look like they would be served well with a drop of threadlocker?
I like Schallers best & I solved the problem of having to tighten the nut occasionally. I use red Loctite when I'm installing them on a strap. These puppies ain't goin nowhere!
Thank you for this review. It showed exactly what I wanted to see: That the dunlop sticks out more than the schaller. I’m gonna try the dunlops to see if it’ll improve the balance on my p bass, it’s pretty good as is but there is room for improvement.
The Shaller S2 has a threaded nut so when you screw it to the strap you can tighten it and they don't come loose also longer posts for thicker straps like on my bass
This video is exactly what I wanted to find. By the connection method, the dunlop looks like it'd feel more secure, but the strap is further out which would be more leverage applied to the installation screw... have you found the hardware to loosen up any over years? I get the Shaller is a mechanical lock in like the dunlop.. but if you swap straps for some reason and havn't put the clip on it yet, can you use the stud as a strap stud and have it be good enough for a day while your locks get to you? I'm torn between the two designs.. and I thank you for the video.. it did clear up a LOT of things in my head. Thanks
Both buttons will work as emergency strap buttons, (as long as you're not doing acrobatics) just keep an eye on your strap connection. I've never had to change out anything in regards to wear. In fact the Schaller on the 540s (red ibanez) has been on that guitar for 20 years. I prefer the Schaller system. Glad to be of help and thanks for the comments 🙂
Good simple explanation and description. As far as checking from time to time that the nut hasn't loosened on the Schaller, a drop or two of thread locker (as can be found at any auto parts store) solves this problem. And the nut can still be loosen with tools without any harm when needed.
I also want to upgrade to strap locks for my strat too. But I want to keep the current straps I have. They're the thicker kind on the end. Thanks brotha
Hi Iv had schaller on my guitars for ever ,I got the Dunlops yesterday for my bass, but they hold the strap much further away from the body ,I don’t like the way it hang, took em of. Had to drive lathe way to Manchester to get some schallers ,yes much better.
Recessed Dunlop Strap-locks, though? Oooooh boy are those nice! They came stock on the old 90's Warwick basses I used to have. The mount sits flush with the body so they don't stick out as far.
SpicyBrown Recessed Dunlops were OEM on Warwick basses at one time. Fodera had them too, and Alembic had them as an option. No strapbutton, but when all your straps have Dunlop locks, they're SPECTACULAR. VERY sleek. Schallers tend to loosen the buttons on the guitars over time, as the locks seem to turn them, or at least that was my experience.
Straightforward demo, thanks. I installed Dunlop on my Les Paul & it fell anyway. Damn guitar is made of black hole matter it's so heavy, cracked a bone in my foot when it landed (probably lucky it hit me instead of the floor, the guitar lived & I healed, but..the whole idea of the Dunlops was THIS WASNT SUPPOSEDTO BE ABLE TO HAPPEN. I think it did because of those TINY ball bearings being all that was holding it. So now I'm using a Lockit guitar strap. Good price, looks & security..I get 'em at Sweetwater.
Been Touring & gigging Hard W/ Multiple guitars, Including Les Paul's. W/Dunlop. NEVER had any problem with them @ all. It's likely you didn't have the "C"clip on right. The Balls CANT Compress. I have had the Schaller's chrome wear off on the inside... & While playing W/High gain, I kept hearing this odd rrrruuaaaa Sound @ random times.. & Took a while to trace this Freaky sound ! It was metal on metal, & vibrating the body & the Pickups Amplifieng that sound !! Rust on the inside of strap section of Schaller. As far as Heavy Les Paul's, there are zillions of used ones. Stay away from the 70's ones !! Litterly "Butcher Block" backs. Weight should be under 8 lbs. Play on, my friend ! & play dangerous !! 😳
Put a little drop of clear nail polish on the washer of the Schaller strap lock once it's tight & never worry about it falling apart. You could also cover the inside of the washer with glue before you put it together.
Quit fuckin' fighting. I so agree. Thanks for sharing mr. Timmons. I just got the Schaller strap locks myself. Pretty sure they'll be good enough for me. Subscribed because you said peace and the formerly mentioned comment plus I liked the content. We need more people like you. Don't forget to rock the shit out of stuff \m/
Ray Torvalds Thanks a million for the kind words, glad you liked the video. I like the Schaller they are just a better fit for most guitars unless you need to balance an instrument due to being top heavy, then the Dunlop might help with that, because the added length they give. Indeed "Quit fkn fighting, Peace brother. Inlakesh...
Oh I almost forgot, IF you order the Fender locking straplocks that are made by Schaller and exactly like the regular Schallers, you get 2 off white & 2 black felt washers to go between your guitar & the straplock button. Pick whichever color goes best with your guitar. It's a nice extra & usually the Fenders are the same price.
I hate how they all rattle. I play bass, and sometimes I do neck shake vibratos, so I can't have shit rattling. Strap locks also break, so it defeats the purpose. The ballbearing ones are the worst, but even the Schaller style mechanism can break. That happened to me once. I've opted for rubber washers for now, but next stop is the Diago Twistlock buttons; you can find them over at Stewmac. It's basically just an oversized strap button with a little cutout to make it easier to get the strap over the button. They're almost an inch in diameter, so nothing is gonna come off of that. The cutout forms two teeth, so if you have them turned downward, the strap will catch on the teeth if you get it twisted around, preventing it from twisting over the button.
Just spent half the day getting a rusty Dunlop Straplock out. My luthier was suggesting a hacksaw. Just FYI... Ulness you like the idea of using WD-40 on your finish, go Schaller.
Did you use the original screws of you ibanez on the Schaller or the screws that comes from Schaller? I have Ibanez S Series and the screws from Schaller is small compared to the Ibanez screws..
Man is been a long time but I'm pretty sure I used the Ibanez screws and had to shave off some of the edges of the screw head to get it to seat inside the button.
I want to put some straplocks on my Les Paul Custom but dont know which ones. I have the Schallers on my Fender Strat and wanted to try something else. The thing is - I saw a video with Schallers install and the guy didnt have to drill into his guitar. Did you have to drill when you were installing the Dunlop straplocks?
I like them both. I prefer Schaller both look and design wise but with the dunlops duel design button I can switch straps depending on what I'm playing and still have it set. those Jesus clips are a pain in the ass too. I've been curious of Loxx too. any experience with them?
"Mini trailer hitch" lmao! I just put Loxx's on my prs and I think I'm gonna throw em on all my guitars. They keep the strap closer to the body than Dunlops or Schallers and they seem very sturdy. Had them for about 6 months now with no Schaller slipping nut problem and I'm not worried about scratching up the straps if the buttons are never coming off. They do look a little goofy with the strap off, but I think they look much cleaner than any other locks I've seen when the strap is on.
I have both. Mostly Dunlop now but used to use Schaller. I'd say because of that I'm voting Dunlop. Besides the nut on the Schaller I've also had the actual knob you pull on come un screwed and go flying off. They both work.
PhantomLord88 Man, I've never used the Ernie Ball locks. as long as the button is not too close to your hips or any other body parts they should work fine, otherwise you could end up with bumps and bruises on your hips?
I've been using schallers for 20+ years, and yes, you have to remember to tighten up the screws that attach to the strap, but when they get loose, it's obvious enough when you attach the strap to the guitar that something is a bit loose. Plus, a bit of loctite and they arent going anywhere. There are downfalls to the schaller design, but overall, it's a cleaner design. Plus, schaller is just a better name than dunlop. Dunlop makes tires. Schaller makes guitar parts. With the strap off, it looks cleaner, and when it's on, it looks cleaner.
I like the Schaller ones when I use a leather guitar strap due to the thickness of the leather. I use the Dunlop ones when I have a thnner strap (nylon).
Luis Paxtor That's a good idea! I really only use strap locks on my main/favorite guitars and those guitars I only use the Levys No1 stretch strap. A really comfortable, cool af strap.
Dam I just bought a Bass with Schallers. I’ve had dunlops and if a strap lock works well, then I’ll keep them. If for some odd reason I don’t feel comfortable with them I’ll never use them again. I’m sticking with Schallers for now 🤙
I'm thinking of upgrading to strap locks for my Les Paul. Harry, have you tried the Ernie Ball or Fender strap locks? I'm not sure if I do either of those, the Dunlops, or Schallers? What's your opinion? Cheers and peace
I have not tried the ernie ball or fender, i choose the Schallers over the Dunlop, I only bought the Dunlop to try them and compare them to the schallers. IMHO the Schallres are superior, even with the nut possibly coming loose, BTW I have NEVER dropped a guitar with the Schallers. You just have to occasionally/rarely check that they are tight. You can always use tight lock or Teflon tape to secure them even more. Cheers and thanks for watching brother...
I've been using Schaller's for years, and tried the Dunlop out on a whim. I like them both. I do find the Dunlops easier to attach and remove from the guitar, but only slightly I didn't like how far they stuck out at first, but I've gotten used to it. At the end of the day, they both seem fine. I liked your final comment, by the way. "Quit fuckin' fightin'!" Also liked the "Jesus clip" comment. Thanks for the chuckles.
The Rockin' Donkey Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the input/comment. I can see an application for both, say you have a top heavy guitar then possibly the added length that Dunlop gives may help balance the instrument? Peace brother. Inlakesh...
That's not what I say when they go flying across the room. Oh, and for the Schaller locks, put a drop of nail polish on the threads before installing and those babies won't loosen up until you put a wrench on them. Nail polish is a better threadlocker than Threadlocker.
you can flush mount the dunlop locks. schaller grip more surface and will un screw the buttons on heavier instruments such as basses an les pauls. look at flushmount for dunlop removes half that length you complained about.
didn't love the dunlop because it stuck out too far, think i'll try the schallers next time , thanks for the info ! a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, but, didn't hit the lottery, so, oh well, what the heck, back to work!
I don't mind them sticking out, they are rock solid but I do prefer the Schallers. Thanks for watching!! Yeh I didnt win the Lotto either, back to the grind ☮
Hi Harry!! dunlop is better?...I see a strap lock for ernie ball and I like so much, but I don't like this schaller...my guitar has fallen for not have this. I have a good luck that my Epiphone guitar doesn't have broken! thanks brother!
They are both good locks but I prefer the Schaller. I have never had one fail on me. But I can see why you would like the Dunlop better, especially if you had a Schaller failure. Thanks for watching and the comment. Peace...
I have the Schaller style strap locks on my bass. The work well, apart from squeaking a little. But, I prefer the rubber washer type. You can get the Fender ones or you can use the rubber rings off Grolsch bear bottles, or tap washers if they are the right size. I like them because they work well and they hold the strap next to the guitar, which looks and feels better IMO. Oh yea, and I agree, quit fucking fighting. ;O)
LOL yeh they do squeak a little, I just put a tiny dab of grease/vaseline on the button works for a good bit. Great idea with the beer bottle thing, I tried putting a thin piece of cloth on the button, it worked but I just grease them up now. Godammit why does there always have to be some friggn drama, life already has enough of that shit. Cheers from the States ☮
I prefer the Dunlops over the Schallers mainly because I play it firebird and a SG. with the strap buttons being on the back of the guitar the Schallers would end up poking me and being uncomfortable where the Dunlops are more flush to my body. plus I prefer the "jesus" clips
Matt Glidewell Thanks for commenting this. I've been thinking about buying some and didn't even consider that but my iceman has a button on the back of the neck where it attaches to the body so the dunlops are probably a better idea. I kind of like the style of the buttons already in it though. If I ever join a band I'll definitely get some but for now I think I'll be ok without.
much prefer Dunlop. Schallers are a pain in the ass to get your strap off your guitar. On stage, in the bar, sweaty hands, etc. It's a freakin' nightmare. And you don't have to worry about them coming loose during a performance either.
Thanks for the review/comparison. I’ve never used strap locks. I do use a D'Addario locking strap on an electric and have the Fender rubber washer type for acoustics. What I don’t understand is why the manufacturers don’t make strap locks that use screws that match what most guitars have for regular strap buttons. One shouldn’t have to glue toothpicks to plug holes to install locks. Peace.
You are welcome and thanks for watching. You are the third person to mention different types of locks, I have been out of the loop for so long, I need to check out the new gear. I am about an hour from any type of music store so most of my stuff comes from online shopping. Hahahaa yep tooth picks, I have used them. I have also trimmed the head of the original screws because the ones included were too small ☮
You are most welcome brother, hope I covered everything. I think the only thing I didn't mention was price. The Dunlops are about 10 bucks and I think the Schallers are about 15 bucks ☮
Goes flying across the room and you say "JESUS!" Ain't that the truth... Lmao. Nice video man.
HAhahaaa Thanks for watching and commenting man. Peace...
Also know as the "Effin Clip".
I also said Jesus (multiple times) trying to get the Jesus Clip into position. Double Jesus!
Simple, direct and to the point. Perfect.
I try.
I cannot stand overproduced, long into, BS videos on here or anywhere for that matter.
"I call em the Jesus Clips"
Great video, what song is playing in the background? Cool little ditty
It's just a cassette recording of one of my ideas, a time before I used a cd to play background noise and got a "warning" they also demonized it 😂 jokes on them, I don't make any money here anyway 😂
Such a fun, cool idea. Fits the video incredible, cheers🍻
Jesus! That was funny as hell! haha
wBryang Those damn Jesus clips. Lol.
thanks for watching. Peace. ..

Just bought a guitar w these strap locks and had no idea how to take them off lol. First video I found showing me how, thanks . GO BUCKS.
Hahaaa Glad I could help, cheers. GO BUCKS!!!
Such a straight forward and simple video but the only one that makes clear what's good and bad about both. Thanks for posting
I try to keep it simple without a bunch of BS. I really appreciate your comment and glad you think I did a good job and glad I could help
Finally a video that's concise and shows up close examples thanks man. Great video thanks for the heads up on the "Jesus clips" haha
Thanks bro, I appreciate the awesome comment. Peace...

I like Schallers best & I solved the problem of having to tighten the nut occasionally. I use red Loctite when I'm installing them on a strap. These puppies ain't goin nowhere!
Me too. Hey that,s a good idea I have some loctite. Cheers ☮

This was great! Informative and funny.
Thanks so much!
The Shaller S2 has a threaded nut so when you screw it to the strap you can tighten it and they don't come loose also longer posts for thicker straps like on my bass

Both buttons will work as emergency strap buttons, (as long as you're not doing acrobatics) just keep an eye on your strap connection.
I've never had to change out anything in regards to wear. In fact the Schaller on the 540s (red ibanez) has been on that guitar for 20 years.
I prefer the Schaller system.

krga94c yes, I should have mentioned titeloc, Teflon tape works well also.
Thanks Harry! I'm going tomorrow and purchasing some Schallers.
paul holditch You are welcome.

I have not seen those I will have to check them out, thanks.
SpicyBrown Recessed Dunlops were OEM on Warwick basses at one time. Fodera had them too, and Alembic had them as an option. Thanks for this video, I had some dunlop on one guitar and wondered if I should try some Schaller :)
You are welcome and thank you for the nice comment.
I'm trying to choose between Schaller S-locks and Daddario Straplock? Who used Daddario? Can you help me?
I have not used either of those, hopefully someone will read this and help you out.
Harry Timmons thx
Five seconds after hearing "Jesus Clips" while attempting a Dunlop install my clip went flying behind my desk. lol
If you drill the guitar out you can inset the button so it doesn't stick out so much.
Nooooo
Oh I almost forgot, IF you order the Fender locking straplocks that are made by Schaller and exactly like the regular Schallers, you get 2 off white & 2 black felt washers to go between your guitar & the straplock button. Harry Timmons I like the idea of Loxx but you have to year up the strap a bit and the button on the guitar looks like a mini trailer hitch.
"Mini trailer hitch" lmao! I just put Loxx's on my prs and I think I'm gonna throw em on all my guitars. They keep the strap closer to the body than Dunlops or Schallers and they seem very sturdy. I have yet to have one fail. Good to know, now I will be keeping an eye on it. I agree they both work well ☮
I have a bolt-on neck with a strap button on the neck backplate, will I have any issie installing Ernie Ball strap locks?
PhantomLord88 Man, I've never used the Ernie Ball locks.
as long as the button is not too close to your hips or any other body parts they should work fine, otherwise you could end up with bumps and bruises on your hips?
You may consider putting the button in a more traditional spot.
Harry Timmons Thanks
I've been using schallers for 20+ years, and yes, you have to remember to tighten up the screws that attach to the strap, but when they get loose, it's obvious enough when you attach the strap to the guitar that something is a bit loose. have used both I am partial to the schallers but they both work well

Harry Timmons no problem
The Dunlop has a flush mount alternative- Example: see YJM strat
I've been using Schaller's for years, and tried the Dunlop out on a whim. I like them both. I do find the Dunlops easier to attach and remove from the guitar, but only slightly I didn't like how far they stuck out at first, but I've gotten used to it. At the end of the day, they both seem fine.

Oh, and for the Schaller locks, put a drop of nail polish on the threads before installing and those babies won't loosen up until you put a wrench on them. Nail polish is a better threadlocker than Threadlocker.
Good idea, thanks for the input.
Bad thing with Shallers is they eventually turn upside down and guitar unexpectedly drops in the middle of perfomance(
I think they're both good. Nice video brother!
They are both solid. Thanks for watching bro. ☮
you can flush mount the dunlop locks. schaller grip more surface and will un screw the buttons on heavier instruments such as basses an les pauls. look at flushmount for dunlop removes half that length you complained about.
didn't love the dunlop because it stuck out too far, think i'll try the schallers next time , thanks for the info ! a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, but, didn't hit the lottery, so, oh well, what the heck, back to work!
I don't mind them sticking out, they are rock solid but I do prefer the Schallers. Thanks for watching!! Yeh I didnt win the Lotto either, back to the grind ☮
"jesus clips" I thought my dad was the only one who called them that. apparently it's a thing.
Hi Harry!! dunlop is better?...I see a strap lock for ernie ball and I like so much, but I don't like this schaller...my guitar has fallen for not have this.
Peace...
Easy fix for the Schaller strap lock, just put some loctite on the thread of the nut attached to the strap
Yep, That will do it. A few winds of Teflon pipe tape will work also with out the shit (tight loc) clogging up the threads?
Is it possible to use the dunlop locks for stagediving?
Hahaaaaa, I would not recommend stage diving with an instrument.
The Jesus clips 😂😂😂
Those little locking balls on dunlop (could they come out)? I like the Schaller because it has the lucky horseshoe.Yeaya!!!!!!!
I suppose it's possible but I have never seen or heard of them coming out.
I prefer the Schaller also.
They both do the job!
Yes sir, no real complaints here. Both are solid, just not very pretty But I have never really cared about that.
I choose function over form ☮
I went to use my Yamaha BB435 and another Fender (Schaller) type strap lock was broke. The damn nipple comes off.
Never had one fail and I have several that are actually Chinese knock offs.
I prefer the Dunlops over the Schallers mainly because I play it firebird and a SG. with the strap buttons being on the back of the guitar the Schallers would end up poking me and being uncomfortable where the Dunlops are more flush to my body. plus I prefer the "jesus" clips
Matt Glidewell I agree, a Schaller jabbed into your hip or ribs could be quite painful.
Thanks for watching!
Matt Glidewell
Thanks for commenting this.
Matt Glidewell Can you use the dunlop locks for stagediving?
The Jesus clips got me fuckin laughin
See,,, got a bad experience with the Dunlops- like once and since then only do Schallers - like.
I have never had the Dunlops fail but Schallers are my preference as well. Thanks for watching Cheers ☮
much prefer Dunlop. Schallers are a pain in the ass to get your strap off your guitar. On stage, in the bar, sweaty hands, etc. It's a freakin' nightmare. And you don't have to worry about them coming loose during a performance either.
I have never had a problem with that, to each his own. Peace.
Yea, it's cool..to each his own....Rock on brother!
Very good video,thank you !
Welcome and thank you
tighten up? uh uh no way glad I did Dunlop. cept they rust a bit
Si el Dunlop falla, el instrumento cae al piso. Así de simple es la elección. Schaller wins.
Agreed

those are really nice, looks like they have solved all the small issues. thanks for the heads up.
thanks again Harry !! :)
You are most welcome brother, hope I covered everything. I think the only thing I didn't mention was price. The Dunlops are about 10 bucks and I think the Schallers are about 15 bucks ☮
Done with Dunlop
Silver tape is the best strap lock ever
Nice guitars.
Thank you, I love them .
Dunlop’s look cooler as Schiller’s seem more reliable
Lol peace to you too!
Harry, do the Schallers work on acoustic as well do you know, please?
the yisus clip hahahahahaha
Hahaha, you like that huh?
yeah man cool videos :D
thanks for checking them out bro.
you say... "Jesus"! lmao
The seond person ive ever heard explain the jesus clip
Screw those jesus clips, I will stick with my schallers
Jesus! Haha
the dunlop design is obviously better.
Obviously I disagree, I think they both great, but i prefer the Schaller design. Peace...
Jesus! Haha
