This video fills a perfect niche in the RUclips sound design tutorial environment. Instantly on the list of my favorite tutorials that I'll probably recommend to friends in the coming months and years.
I learned in 13 minutes what Ive been hoping to learn the past 13 years....synths & oscs makes SO MUCH MORE sense now. One of the best synth tutorials online & ive been surfing through youtube tutorials for over a decade. Just having this video's insights w/ the video/audio demonstrations is enough to get the mind jogging & feeling less intimidated when opening up synth plugins hoping to craft these different styles we've all heard but so few of us understand...til now. Thanks man!
I'm a 49yo Heavy Metal bass player who just bought his first groovebox the other day (a ZOOM ARQ AR-96). And even though I've 'been around' and 'seen some stuff' this is my first time really exploring this genre so it's great to be able to come here and get a good, quick rundown of the fundamentals (both kinds). I actually sat with the ARQ as the video played and followed along, it was super-fun. Thanks.
You've basically summed up what I've learned over the last couple of months into one video, really cool stuff! Feel like I could learn a ton from you, subscribed!
I like the way you articulate what you are doing, easy to understand. First half of this was my fav. Love to see some emotional deep and beautiful strings.
Incredible bro, thank you for doing this. I would LOVE to see more content like this, maybe breaking down classic sounds by specific genre or doing like an artist profile (Flume/SOPHIE something like that).
Normally I resent adverts but on this occasion I needed the break to allow my brain to stop whirling with overwhelming ideas and possibilities. Big Love for uploading this.
This is fantastic! thank you creating this video, looking forward to watching the others. You've got a great narration feng shi - easy to comprehend and follow along. Many Thanks (and of course, subbed!)
I've been using Rytmik Studio and for the most part I'm ambling about trying different combinations without any idea what does what. So sometimes my songs sound really awesome, and sometimes they sound just milquetoast and I'm never sure what I did with the synth to make it sound as good as it did "that one time". With your tutorial, I'm feeling more confident now. :)
Thanks, really. I just studied a bit of synthesis (subtractive, fm, wavetable) but even though i do know exactly how many different synths works now i didn't know how to make some basics sounds
Hi. I'm not an EDM guy, but I needed to work with the basic EDM sounds these days, so thank you for a very to the point video that got me covered on all I needed.
This is awesome! I'm dying to get the heck out of the office, run home and try some of these on my analogue synths... While relatively short; this video is more densely packed than the posterior of a Kardashian...
If this guy isn't, he definitely should be making BANK... as good as or even better than so many of the other guys on YT who proclaim their multi-platinum credits ! Amazing stuff...
Awesome vid! Got any tips for electro? There’s a song, smoke by au5 and fractal idk if you know it if not check it out, but I wanna make music like that, also how would I do drumstep?
Gabe that was fantastic - Just coining the term "supersaw" was in itself helpful - since I'm working on a project with a friend who does electronic music , and communicating sound ideas can be tricky without a shared language D: , also the shaping of the saw wave to achieve different popular aesthetics was very clear . TBH if you'll make a series out of this - Exploring different popular sounds and naming them \ bringing up song refferences to them then diving quickly to shaping them - would be very practical. On another note - As a new circuit user - the lack of arpeggiatior and scatter effect does not leave much room for odd explorations of melodies and harmonies (the scales options nice though) which Is somewhat of a bum , it leaves you to explore with what your hands can tap to record or trying different stuff slowly on the sequencer which isn't the most the most fun . I saw your video about creating tracks mixing the circuit with a traditional DAW , which was nice - I was wondering if you have Ideas on fun ways to use the DAWs midi capabilities with arps and scatters \ other simple tricks which do not involve too much midi programming VIA the mouse and keyboard (which is why most people get a groove box) to speed up the flow of writing in the circuit and explore different rythmical and harmonical variations . This could make the circuit so much better.
Glad it was helpful, although to be clear, I didn't come up with the term supersaw, that's been around for a while. I'm definitely thinking about making a series out of this... We'll see if I can come up with a way to make that happen. For arps in the Circuit, usually programming them in by hand is faster than playing them in. For doing automated arps and such, it would be worth looking into a plugin like Scaler or Cthulhu.
It's been a while since this video came out, but if I recall correctly I had a limiter applied (I usually use LoudMax, which is free), so it keeps stuff from peaking.
Are you just messing with Serum's default settings, or did you get the sound you wanted before the tutorial started? I'm just trying to see if Serum sounds that good out of the box
I started from the default settings. It can sound that good out of the box, but do note that a lot of synth plugins that use subtractive synthesis are capable of most of the sounds in this video (other than the growls near the end).
@@GabeMillerMusic I was following along in Sytrus. I'm starting to feel comfortable enough with it too make nice saws, but I was impressed with Serums sound right away. 16 unisons definitely added some depth. Plus, the tone was warm with a healthy amount of coarseness from the detune
I just got Serum and followed this video, you can get the EXACT sounds you hear just by following along. The only sound you cant get is the last one where Gabe is using a custom wavetable he made from a dubstep song. Would luv to get that wavetable to follow long :) hint hint!
You can do most of the stuff I showed on a whole lot of hardware synths. The only thing you can't do on every synth is the wavetable based growl stuff.
I wanna learn to do the "chopped up" or "intermittent cut off" stuff that starts happening at 3:07 here: ruclips.net/video/vS7X5nuvjHo/видео.html Is the last part of your video (bass growls) what will lead me there?
1:18 start
1:52 trance chords
2:06 pad
2:22 smoother pad
2:40 gritty bass
3:24 lead foundation
3:56 pluck
4:38 pluck variation
5:15 pluck arp
5:27 build energy, automation
5:45 acid bass
6:37 sub bass
7:08 808
8:13 bass on any sound system
8:52 bass growls
Thank you!
This video is PRICELESS with how much it teaches fundamental concepts in such a short time. Thank you so much!

For me, this is one of the best and easiest to understand videos about using synths and stuff. Great job and thanks, man.
Holy shit this is quality material.

You are a wonderful BEING. Thanks for all your hard work and constant pervasive youtubery.
Brilliant! Thanks so much, Gabe for sharing your knowledge! Very much appreciated.
This video really helpful! I was confused by what is lead, bass, pad, pluck, etc. for a long time. Now I know the fundamental difference! Thank you!

So appreciative of this video... great work, great channel! Thank you.

This is a great video - I wish I had this breakdown when I was first getting into EDM.
thank you so much, i was losing hope in making music, but this video helped me understand it so much better
Your video is super well made. Great teaching, editing, and recording.
One of the best tutorials I ever watched. Keep it up!

Blew my mind. Great job covering the basics!
Thanks a lot, you really helped me understand the key elements of EDM a bit more

This is an AMAZING how to Serum basics. Props!

Thanks for posting this... 🤙
Thank you! Sometimes simplicity works best to learn.
Hi. I'm not an EDM guy, but I needed to work with the basic EDM sounds these days, so thank you for a very to the point video that got me covered on all I needed.
Glad it helped! These techniques go way beyond EDM, but fully writing out electronic music made the title a bit too long
that was so use full! !
Your bass growl really reminds me of a lot of Svdden Death songs lol. Fantastic video man.
THANK YOU BRO
this is an amazing tutorial/
i don't even like/make edm music but this is still so helpful for anyone who wants to learn sound design
Good collection, mostly just watch and comment to support ya a bit
This is awesome! I'm dying to get the heck out of the office, run home and try some of these on my analogue synths... While relatively short; this video is more densely packed than the posterior of a Kardashian...
I like this video. Thanks for making it and sharing. (I came here from the Deadmau5 Master Class video you made)
Thank you man!
Glad to help!
I had no idea how technical this style of music can be.
YOU GOT MY RESPECT Im not into EDM but im into pink floyd so this be usefull
Dude - Nice.
If this guy isn't, he definitely should be making BANK... as good as or even better than so many of the other guys on YT who proclaim their multi-platinum credits ! Amazing stuff...
I was hoping you would do some videos focused on sound design. This is great!
intergalactic planetary!
Спасибо!
Nice 👌
2:22 in and it is already a great tutorial
Imagine making all these sounds in the 90s . Could have killed the music scene
Excellent sound design tutorial!
I would love to never hear that Super Saw sound in another song for the next 100 years but that's a whole other thing
Awesome vid! Got any tips for electro? There’s a song, smoke by au5 and fractal idk if you know it if not check it out, but I wanna make music like that, also how would I do drumstep?
Holy F this on here for free!?? Thanks for this man really helpful
Great content and it's free OMG 🔥
Wish I could've found this before(pure gold)
I saw this from r/edmproduction
Waiting for more!!!

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hi, Gabe regarding Korg electribe shows how about a how to use the master effects I don't know how to add a second effect from the xy pad.
Finally something actually helpful lol
Can you give a tutorial on automation?
Do you think you'll make a video dedicated to bass sounds?
So awesome to visually see what happens when I tweak knobs in other synth VSTs. Thanks man!!!
How do dj effects play into key design?
How do I get that dubstep sound
POV: you messed around with DAWs for some years now and all these words make sense when you thought you were just having fun
Awesome but how expensive is Serum?
_Doomfist Voice_
*JUST WHAT I NEEDED!* 💎
Dude I’d love to be your friend lol none of my friends are into this as much as much!
what is that app
SEEEEERRRUMMMM
Edm song structure pls!
youre Pro Bro! Thanks alot!! Bless by Jesus name!
Is the master channel of the setuper peaking into the red? If you have any peaks over 0dB it will distort. Please do let know, We will get
It's been a while since this video came out, but if I recall correctly I had a limiter applied (I usually use LoudMax, which is free), so it keeps stuff from peaking.
Why is the audio quality not so good?
Because RUclipss compression?

Who all felt it was like Another Life At 3:45
So bad that you can't use vst plugins in fl studio mobile...
Is there any free synth that you would recommend?
I haven't used it much yet, but Vital is very much worth looking into.
@@GabeMillerMusic Will check it out, thanks!
