Whenever I record vocals there's always like latency in the audio and I'm not sure how to fix it. I've tried a couple of different things in ableton to fix it maybe you can do a tutorial on how to fix this?
I'm just at the beginning of the video and I prefer how the Before sounds... Might not sound exceptional but it sounds more cohesive. I'll go on with the rest of the video now. Edit: for the rest... nice tips.
Love your tubes, but they ignore one thing that most people struggle with. Guitar and bass and drums, not synth stuff. I've done loads of mixing (without as much success as you I would add!), and because most of the the things you use as examples (apart from vox) are midi generated, then they aren't that difficult to "control" which is different to "mix" which is what you concentrate on. Would be great to get your take on controlling more uncontrollable stuff (like miked guitars etc) which I'm sure you're ace at. I'm sure you have great experience in this so a take on Rock/Indie/fusion of both of those and synths would be interesting from you!
The thing I struggle with most is that I want to get the aural “vision” in my head into my DAW(s) but there **are** no reference tracks or inspirations or even genre names because everything I write is in the genre Sally. Lol. (Like if it’s part jazzy, part bossa nova, part trance, part drum n bass or even dubstep, part y2k goth electro pop or bouncy house adhd pop with some “Shirley bassey meets Shirley Manson meets Cole Porter meets David Bowie” vocal stylings going on (in three-part harmony, no less) then I don’t know where to start in production, lol. My acapella stuff almost sounds better than something with instruments but I want instruments too (I have synths and odesi) but like I struggle with the drums. Almost everything I write is both syncopated for some reason whilst also hopping from this time signature to that so I end up recording the beat on a fake tabla instead of relying on drum patterns. I’ve actually gone to sign up for your webinars three times (and once even accelerator) but since I’m more of a non-acoustic singer songwriter (as it were) I figured I’d have too many niche questions for that to work efficiently. I continue to gratefully watch and diligently apply the wisdom dropped in each gem of your videos, my Darling brother Will (heh sorry had to, apparently I turned into Mrs dad joke comedienne in my old age lol). But like at this point, I’m actually so despairing of ever having the skillz to get my soundscapes into daw that I’m literally working on recording about 20 of my songs as mouth music (like me impersonating instruments) this month. Which is a trial in itself because then I start singing air guitar solo or whatever and branching jnto these 20 minute improvs which are only partially connected to the main melody, so like… if I could sum it up in one word my musical struggle is harnessing my creative ADHD and compositional brilliance in the face of my complete lack of skill (even after 20 years lol) in programming music digitally (I could play it all on a synth but the recording never sounds clean to me and the composition and key and time signature problems remain at that point. Ok so my official struggle title is: “Music production for singer-songwriters to realise and produce the songs that already exist in their souls.” Phew that turned into dissertation lol. Anywhoodle thank you ever so my brother. (And if ever you create a support group or class for singer songwriters who need help then I’m the first to sign up by the by.) Here's something that may help when finding a sound/melody that you want to save for later in Ableton: Create a new folder ("Midi Ideas" is mine) and add it to your Places in the browser. Drag the Midi of the sound you like from the Timeline or Loop View into this (Midi Ideas) folder and name the Midi. When you open a new project, drag the midi file into the empty space in either view. Tempo, Instrument Preset, and all your Effects will all generate automatically in the new session. It's allowed me to quickly save great ideas without the extra hassle of deleting tracks, moving projects to new folders, or saving effects chains separately. You may need to save the VST instrument preset before this process, if you have made preset tweaks, for this to work properly. Love your content as always, and cheers!

Hi Will, I cannot thank you enough for the videos, they are excellent. They are so practical and absolutely relevant and there is so much value in them. On one hand, I am so glad that someone created a channel focused on such a niche stuff as EDM production. On the other hand, it is a bit scary that there is 200+K people doing it already:-))) Regarding the content, I find so reassuring that the techniques and problems you mention are exactly what I (and other EDM producers) had/have to face. It is like not being alone in all of this - I mean doing weird stuff other people do not understand at all....hahaha. I think in some way, a person needs to be obsessed with this because otherwise it is very difficult to produce reasonably good quality. Hi will, i wanted to just say mate within the past 2-3 weeks I have been watching your channel, there's sooooo much stuff you have helped me with I'm actually flabbergasted because I didn't think most of these tips would work for me until I tried them. Before then my music sounded absolutely shit, I'm not kidding but since i started listening to you, within 2 weeks my tracks have been changing and getting better every single track just gets better and better i can properly hear them, i don't hear any flat, muddy, or just annoying frequencies in my mix (as much) but i know when and how to fix them. just wanted to say big thank you mate! you genuinely have helped me soo much and I'm only going to get better and faster at making music, and its all thanks to you mate!!!
Really pro this guy has solved the whole problem of RUclipsr producers who teach mixing and mastering this is what I also experienced and learned in 13 years production and I use this teqnique and ❤🎉 always works for me
This is great advice! Every day I have fun just improvising for about an hour or so. I play around with sound design or if I'm lazy, with the various presets and virtual instruments in my DAW. It's the improvising that stimulates the creative juices. Combining your suggestions with my goofing off sounds like a match made in musical heaven! Thanks!
Probably mentioned somewhere in the comments but listening to music in general can be dumb to mention but it is the basic after all. There’s so much out there, past, present, future. If you are not up to date with the artists surrounding your style / genre you will always be a few steps away from breakthrough.
thanks for the tips! one thing that helped me with decision fatigue was writing everything in midi with live instruments. it helped me figure out what kind of sounds i like and what im actually trying to say in my music and i can write without caring about sounds.. then i sound design when i feel like it on separate projects and hot swap in the sounds ive made over time :)
So a more fundamental issue is recognizing genre. The subgenrefication of EDM seems to have become too granular to be useful. I've found them to be overlapping, inconsistent, and sometime even contradictory depending on whom you're talking to. Perhaps in a future video that gives some genre clarification would be helpful?

My biggest struggle at the moment is.... something I can't quite put my finger on. By which I mean, something feels "off" or missing from my tracks, but I'm not sure what. I thought it was the mixing, butmaybe it's more in the sound selection. Maybe this video will help!
This is by far one of the most valuable pieces of advice I took away from your course. I saved time and learned to find satisfaction in just getting as close as I can, without letting perfectionism hurt my music.
i think its important to take the time to find some amazing sounds that work best together! michael jackson was not satisfied after listening to tons on snares. try to move quickly too so thats why u only focus on extremely quality packs...
I don't think the 2nd version better, its different, it could work in the middle of the 1st track.@@EDMTips One tip, instead of writing notes, screen print for example. About sign in labels such as Armada it´s another history, that envolve many factors. Talk by experience!
Ah, yes. I used to look for hours for the best sound for everything, going through tons of patches and samples. It was so tedious that it drained my energy and the fun. I sometimes couldn't stand the song anymore in the end! So, I decided I should learn to make the sounds myself. I've been focusing on sound design. I enjoy that a lot more, although it's even slower in getting to the right sounds. If I succeed at all, that is.
I like to keep my mixes simple. I have upgraded to DAWs that allow 200+ or unlimited tracks within your mix, but largely, if you utilize all of these, its overkill. But respect to DAWs that have almost unlimited 'tracks' and/or 'clips'.

speaking of EQ, man this video has a very annoying/loud peaks at around 7-9kHz -.- ... I've been struggling with these sound selection issues myself though so always good to hear some ideas
that' s also how Deadmau5 select his drum elements:) dont look for a fancy way to look for sounds guys. I used to use XO plugin to select and switch samples very quickly since it was allowing me to select similar sounds around that area. paid 170 bucks for this plugin. i thought it would be faster to find what i like but user interface not so friendly. it looks super confusing still even after using it for a while. ableton's swap ended up working faster for me. until xln work on that plugin and make it more user friendly i m not touching it again. because too many steps to get those sounds in default., when i render it sounds completely differeny and i cant freeze flatten it. and i dont wanna keep deailing with it. keep deleting all the processing and rendering again to hear the exact sample i picked , waay too much work. so dont look for fancy ways guys. ableton hot swap def works.
I'm a little bit afraid of this cutting my creativeness. Don't get me wrong, I think it's really inspiring, but why not swap sounds before just before mixing, not at the beginning?
Only sample packs you need is vengeance and KSHMR. So many sample providers is just stealing vengeance samples and do a small change to them and reselling as a new sample/sample pack. 😅
@@EDMTips not you Will… don’t take it personally , but there are so many vengeance samples that people just rip-off and called their sample/sample packs
That "before" comparison had a bit strong drums, but the "after" one had too sludgy. Didn't hear it sounded that much better. Could say the "before" one was even better :)
Hello! I really appreciate the video and I have some additional questions. When using a reference track, how deep does the referencing go? Is it going as far as deconstructing or are we just listening to the track, noticing key sounds, patterns, timing, etc, and using that to make our track?

Wise words as always Will. I recently watched another tutorial posted from a couple of years ago entitled 'Stop Watching Mixing Tutorials'. Pretty much said the same thing, i.e. it sounds rubbish because you didn't take the time in sound sourcing and, probably more importantly, your arrangement sucks as well. Struggle with most? Probably composing something I think has my own voice, though between watching your channel and Audioreakts, think I'm getting there..

Do you guys always write your melodies and bass lines with a basic sound and do the sound selection/tweak after? I always start at selecting a cool preset that inspires me to play something and well im getting so used to it that its hard to change even when it doesn't fit that well....

I tend to create a sound, make a loop/riff/hook/melody depending on the sound itself and then create the track... the genre pretty much writes itself

I used to use XO plugin to select and switch samples very quickly since it was allowing me to select similar sounds around that area. paid 170 bucks for this plugin. i thought it would be faster to find what i like but user interface not so friendly. it looks super confusing still even after using it for a while. ableton's swap ended up working faster for me. until xln work on that plugin and make it more user friendly i m not touching it again. because too many steps to get those sounds in default., when i render it sounds completely differeny and i cant freeze flatten it. and i dont wanna keep deailing with it. keep deleting all the processing and rendering again to hear the exact sample i picked , waay too much work. so dont look for fancy ways guys. ableton hot swap def works.

Instead of using post it notes, why not load all of the samples into the drum rack? Then solo them and delete the ones you don't like.

Only sample packs you need is vengeance and KSHMR. So many sample providers is just stealing vengeance samples and do a small change to them and reselling as a new sample/sample pack. 😅

Wise words as always Will. I recently watched another tutorial posted from a couple of years ago entitled 'Stop Watching Mixing Tutorials'. Pretty much said the same thing, i.e. it sounds rubbish because you didn't take the time in sound sourcing and, probably more importantly, your arrangement sucks as well.
Struggle with most? Probably composing something I think has my own voice, though between watching your channel and Audioreakts, think I'm getting there..

Do you guys always write your melodies and bass lines with a basic sound and do the sound selection/tweak after? I always start at selecting a cool preset that inspires me to play something and well im getting so used to it that its hard to change even when it doesn't fit that well....
There is no right or wrong way. You should do it the way it works for you :)
