Solar Panel Install in Our Lance 825 Truck Camper | Rigid Solar Panels to Flexible Solar Panels

- Welcome to another video in our new series, In The Garage - where we share the projects we've been doing behind the scenes with our Lance 825 Truck Camper. In this episode, we will be upgrading our 100 watt rigid solar panel and installing three 180 watt flexible solar panels. We did this shortly after upgrading our battery bank to two 100ah lithium iron phosphate batteries because we now needed more solar power to keep them charged up.

Really liking this new series. As someone who’s not the handiest guy in the world, I appreciate seeing people who are non-experts getting these projects done.
Thank you!! With this series we wanted to show that anyone can do projects like this! Just takes time… and maybe a couple of redos 😉
Great energy upgrade! The best moment may have been your C.A.D. 😆
Thanks! We’re pretty proud of that 😆
RUclips needs more of your short and sweet "how to do this" videos.
Keep up the good work
Thanks
Thanks so much! 🤗
Interesting! I have heard of the flexible panels degrading but that was a few years ago. I hope you get better life out of these. Well-done!
Thanks! Flexible panels don’t last as long as rigid, but the lighter weight and ease of installation are what swayed us.
Nicely done!!! 👍
Thanks so much!!
Keep an eye on those solar panels. There's a video on RUclips of another full timer where they burnt their roof. They caught it in time but there was damage.
Thanks for the heads up! We’ll be sure to monitor them closely.
I'd keep an eye on those sticky back zip tie holders. They don't usually handle cold or water well.
Thanks for the tip! We will definitely keep an eye on them.
Awesome setup! How are you liking the total power now? I have a 65 ah battery right now. I am looking to add bigger batteries and solar panels. I also have Starlink and my computer like you both. Anything you would change if you were to do it again?
Thanks! Our setup is working out great for us! It gives us plenty of power to work off grid all day, before topping off our power back at camp. If we were to do more boondocking, we’d probably add another battery. Good luck and safe travels!
👍👍
When I upgraded my Lance I wanted to do flexible too but I was afraid of reliability. I also do mostly hot weather camping and prefer the air gap to prevent heat transfer. Next step is charge controller upgrade!
Absolutely! It’s all about personal preference and how you camp. Good luck with your controller upgrade!!
@@thewaywedidit I upgraded about 6 years ago I put 400 w of glass on the roof and my Go Power wasn't happy.
@@garyausher oh wow! Yeah our Go Power is only rated to 600 watts so we had to make sure to be under that.
@@thewaywedidit I have the '14 1172. There's a hidden 10 amp fuse in line with the battery disconnect switch. It blew and there is no documentation on wiring diagrams.
@@garyausher are you using lithium batteries? When we switched from AGM to lithium we had to change our converter (motherboard by breaker box) to run lithium vs lead acid. Ours was freaking out too until we did that. We shared how we did it in our battery install video. Maybe that’ll help?
Great video! “Take #3”. 😂. What a boost in the incoming amperage. How heavy were the panels you removed?
Thank you so much!!! We appreciate your support!! The panel we removed was 16lbs - right around the same weight of all 3 flexible panels combined!
If you dont use your roof rack you can mount panels on it.
Great suggestion! We do use the roof rack for extra storage on longer trips.
Are your panels in series or parallel?
Our panels are in parallel
What solar panels did you buy?
We bought the Alrska 180 Watt Flexible Solar Panels off of Amazon.
@2:58 hard to watch you slice your roof membrane!
🫣
Wow, you should seek a professional next time. The sad part is that you encourage people to do their own horrible diy jobs. Especially on the roof patch, you should have use a heat welder and bought some tpo material. And you have to use acetone to clean tpo not alcohol. The patch kit you bought it temporary at best. Otherwise than that it was a worthy attempt.
I just watched this video and immediately thought of your flexible solar install. I hope this doesn't happen to you guys! ruclips.net/video/vf0-tXm-Oqc/видео.html&ab_channel=EatSeeRV
Thanks for the heads up! We'll be sure to closely monitor our new panels.
I’m sorry, but you’re really difficult to listen too. It’s like you’re narrating from a written script. You really should put some personality into it, maybe a bit of inflection. Perhaps letting your husband narrate now and then. Good content but listening isn’t easy.
