Yes, we can all research this online, and bla bla bla, but this video didn't explain jack squat. Still makes no sense. They talk about how money is printed and governed and then jump to how bitcoin miners solve math problems and then get bitcoins. The heck does that mean? Solve math problems for whom? What's the purpose of doing that? How is that related to bitcoin and where does the value of bitcoins come from? I'm just saying, do a better video. Someone new just being introduced to this wouldn't understand a darn thing from this video.

I think they meant to say that fiat currency is printed and regulated by government, and bitcoin is not, bitcoin is printed(or mined) by anyone wanting to mine bitcoin and free from government regulation.

The "math problems" are not solved for anyone, it is more like a gamble. When you run mining software on your PC it makes hash values which look like this: 0000000000000000005b64d114db08045c5b853112396a46d10f4d33655054f3
That one is actually a recent one that "won" a block and received 25 bitcoins. Anyone can mine and try to calculate the correct hash value for the next block.
"What's the purpose of doing that?"
It's done because you need to show that you are using electricity to hash values, it's called "proof-of-work"
Anyone wanting bitcoin need to show a proof of them working. How do I know that you are working? Give me a hash value that is impossible to make without computers and electricity. The ones that makes most hash values(more work) gets more bitcoin. It is also done for security reasons, no one can be given bitcoins without showing proof-of-work(hash values) and hash values are impossible to fake or cheat in any way.

For everything else its perception that gives value.
My reason to perceive value in bitcoin is my distased for todays banking system, I am a fan of anything that rivals it.

What I don't understand though, is why anyone would design a system whose side effect of transaction authorising/validating is an exponential computing requirement with its associated power requirements. I get the hash proves you have done the work. But there must be a far more intelligent way of insuring that transaction records can't be fiddled using cryptogrophy and distributed record databases that require cross-authentication? I mean in the "real world", the emphasis is always about making processes as efficient as possible and any process that had an inbuilt requirement for continually increasing complexity no matter what, would have been scrapped long ago and redesigned! Am I missing something here?

---Yes, that part was clear to me. I just didn't understand the video's jump from one context to the next that I first listed above.
---Your explanations, although good, and this isn't meant as a criticism, just an observation, still doesn't address why people need to mess with hash values to begin with in order to obtain bitcoins. Unless that concept was just some creative idea in some strangely random or arbitrary way by the people who came up with the bitcoin idea. I mean, if people need to jump through hoops to obtain bitcoins, why not have them draw pictures or do something else, instead? Obviously, I'm being a bit facetious, and I know I need to research this more on my own, it just seems like a strange way for people to obtain something of value. I suppose the methodology is merely tied to the sophistication behind the needed security and tracking measures to help ensure those who earned the bitcoins can be properly credited and to fight potential fraud.

Crypto is risky as many would say but I think the actual risk in Crypto is not investing, buying the capitulation isn't a tough call, but it is a very tough call to figure out what to do aside holding. SERIOUSLY - mining for bitcoins is the same exact thing as playing WOW all day and selling your gold coins on the internet for money. You don't have to mine it, but some people must mine in order for transactions to be processed. The miners offer their computing power to the network to process transactions in exchange for the possibility of a Bitcoin reward. If there was no incentive, then no one would spend their money on machines and electricity to power the bitcoin network.
Think about Visa or Mastercard. They have fees of 2-3% in order to buy computers, bandwidth, and software that enable a merchant to swipe a credit card at the point of sale, and verify that the customer has the wherewithal to purchase that item.
Visa and Mastercard is a centralized payment network whereas Bitcoin is a decentralized payment network. Bitcoin is not a separate legal entity somewhere that's purpose is to achieve a return on investment for its shareholders. It is simply a lean computer protocol that spreads the required computing power over many different nodes.
These nodes are numerous and diverse (i.e. they are not related to each other). Every miner has a history of all transactions that can be unanimously agreed upon. If there is ever a dispute on a transaction, the resolution is for the miners to "compare notes", which means to compare their copy of the transaction history with other miners. If 51% of the miners agree on a certain transaction, then it is accepted by the network.

There is no way in hell these miners are actually physically reviewing anything and having online town hall meetings to discuss it. It would all be software. Who's software? If the software is compromised, the integrity of the individual data is irrelevant.

You don't really do any of that. The hardware and software does it. It's merely checking and double checking the validity of Bitcoin transactions taking place around the world. While doing this, your mining system is also taking part in what is essentially a lottery. Bitcoin transactions are logged in encrypted groups called blocks. Every time your system correctly guesses the number that decrypts a block, Bitcoin creates and rewards you with their currency, based on the size/difficulty of the block.
As more people use the currency, more people begin mining, and the number of transactions increases, the block decryptions get increasingly complicated. Solving blocks becomes worth more, but also less likely. So, it's not too good to be true. It's now at the point that you need to have many processors running or join a "pool" of other miners who split their winnings.
Checking the legitimacy of transactions gives Bitcoin the incentive to pay you, and getting paid gives you incentive to run security checks for them. Not much different than an employer-employee relationship, except you have no set pay.
Remember, this is all rather new and hypothetical. If it doesn't make sense it's cuz this has never been done, and all of this is based on what the Bitcoin creators have predicted to be the best way to protect their currency while "printing" new currency (the block rewards). They could be wrong. Bitcoin may not be around in twenty years, or the currency may crash in value, but that heavily depends on the users and the policy makers. There are plenty of videos explaining how to start mining and showing large mines or "farms", if you're interested.

O.K. So I have watched a few videos on this now (this one being the least helpful tbh) and I think I have a good idea of how this whole Bitcoin thing works. The question I am still left with though, is why this currency has value? Like I get that the value is representative of "work done" in the form of mining code or whatever, but why does mining this code create currency that actually carries value? People say things like "it's representative of the investment made in time, hardware and electricity by an individual" but that still doesn't explain where the value of the currency came from. If nobody is paying people to do these math problems then why are they being paid for doing these math problems?
Also on a side note, hypothetically, if everyone were to accept Bitcoin as the first global currency and do away with banks, wouldn't it be overwhelmingly unfair to those who can't make the investment to buy super computers to mine these coins? Wouldn't we end up in a situation where anyone who jumps on the mining band wagon early, ends up rich, and those who don't, end up poor? Even though these "miners" have done literally nothing to benefit society as a whole, and have just burnt out some pricey GPUs, and wasted a tonne of electricity. Food for thought...

It’s like stocks in a way, where bitcoin is a huge math problem and once solved you get rewarded. That reward goes up as people join in. Stocks go up as people buy them, and you “mine” for bitcoins by having a computer solve for you. They’re very complex math problems, and they get harder and harder as more people join, and that’s why their money raises. You can sell them like stocks, and they just keep going up. Of course, it’ll go down once people stop mining for bitcoin but then the people who stay committed get a bunch of it, and then attract friends who also go mining, and the chain starts all over again.

If Bitcoin devalues by 50% in a day, for example (and that's taking it easy) reflect this in every transaction of that day by doubling payouts and remaining balances. Regarding the waste of energy and CPU power, again, very true, BUT one could equally say it's a great waste of materials and ink and equipment and electricity and manpower to print paper cash and mint metal coins (since we now have the technology to transact entirely electronically and could bypass physical cash if we wanted) - and those processes have to happen CONTINUOUSLY, round the clock, as cash gets degraded over time and has to be replaced! At least, once a bitcoin is mined, that's it, it exists, it won't be destroyed, and it doesn't degrade.

About bitcoin, your last sentence is not completely true: once a bitcoin is mined, it still need to be exchangeable. So it still needs mining to secure transactions. The creation of new bitcoin for miners is only a method to encourage more people to mine, and by this way, increase decentralization and security of the network. It's not the fundamental goal of mining.
Also, there are new consensus algorithms, which allow faster transactions, with much less resources required, as XRB (RaiBlocks) for example.
@Adman - so what is the purpose of making the math problems harder to solve as you get closer to the end of the supply - which is a big part of the problem in using up our natural resources. Why does it have to drag out so long? If there's a finite supply then fine, just let it hit the max more quickly. That would be a massive energy savings.
