Hey guys! On Weekend Wankshop 214, we are going to dive deep into the origins of Uncle Ben's extended range obsession, and talk about the top 5 riffs that made me want to start playing 7 strings so many years ago!
Around 2001, i got my first 7 string (a Schecter C-7 Diamond Series), but what made me want to grab a 7? I'll give you a hint: Its all stuff from before 7 strings were everywhere! On today's lesson, i'm going to be teaching you all some classic riffs from Dream Theater, Fear Factory, Meshuggah, Steve Vai, and, of course, KORN! These artists were all integral in setting me down the path of the 7 string.
Using a variety of guitars today. My Ibanez RG7421 swirl, another RG7421 swirl, my custom mahogany RG7, my mutant Road Flare Red custom RG7, and of course my beautiful Aristides 070. All played through my Kemper Profiler, using SinMix profiles.
What are the riffs that drove you to play 7's? Let me know in the comments!

      To me it's mathcore/Djent.
One of the first bands I heard with this kind of sound was Erra, Plini, Gojira, modern day Babylon, and from there I fell in the rabbit hole
I used to listen to metalcore and deathcore, coming from a 90's hardcore punk basis, then I started enjoying the progressive metalcore bands and the solos and instrumentals from bands like Chelsea grin. I used to listen to thrash metal riffs from bands like artillery and kreator

My two were easily Vai and Fear Factory.
I actually never had a 7-string, which is sad. My local guitar shop had a Vai 7 string this this pearl eye/triangle at the bottom. It was a $1,200 guitar they had hanging for years. They finally offered it to me for $700 once and I never went back for it (college came)
Still regret that to this day.

I bought mine because both of the bands I was in most recently were 7 string bands. Didn't even bond with it until I quit and was trying to sell it, but now it's the only guitar I play.

Dude I (finally) jumped into the dark realm of 7 String about 7 months ago. For the ESP E-II Horizon FR-7. It was a challenge at first...it was like ‘Dude, this extra string is on the way!!’ But I just made a point to play that guitar every day and didn’t take long to get used to it. Love it, and naturally my style has shifted into more of a melodic death metal style.

I have resisted only because I didn't want to change an extra string.. It's time to explore one

Watching Meshuggah play live as a support act for Machine Head in 1995 was my introduction to the 7strings. Those black Ibanezes with neon green pickups. OMG. Bought the Steve Vai UV777P in 1998 :D

Love it! Very similar to you here - started discovering Korn here on the Tube, thought that Head and Munky's 7 strings were the coolest thing ever. Korn actually inspired me to start playing guitar, because power chords and so damn fun! Soon thereafter discovered Fear Factory. Was so used to Korn's filthy low guitar tone that Dino's super tight machine riffery was like an enlightening slap in the face. Like you, I just had to learn Replica and Self Bias Resistor. (Your cover of the latter is fantastic, by the way!)
Then I very quickly discovered Meshuggah. Changed the way I looked at music for the better. Saw them live in concert. One of my best life experience without a doubt. Plus, they use 8 strings. Like, how metal is that? So HEAVY. Animals as Leaders was supporting. Tosin Abasi. Holy (New MIllenium Cyanide) Christ...
These days, have a 7 string in drop A, with a big fat .070 for the low A. (Took some careful filing at the nut.) So inspiring - sounds beautiful clean and brutal dirty. Love it so much!

Dark Eternal Night by Dream Theater is absolutely what did it for me. I’ve been a 6 stringer for a while but I just bought a Jason Richardson 7 string in the new red color.

I just got my first 7 string yesterday, I'd say "Psychosocial" by Slipknot, Every Korn song and "Silence In the Snow" by Trivium really made me want a 7 string
