So many metal bands are so caught up in "making good riffs" that they miss out on the base, primal aspect that makes for great heavy guitar. A lot of Korn riffs are just basic low open strings and dissonant intervals, but they've got groove and atmosphere in spades. Plus they actually do get into some surprisingly experimental territory, the droning textures on Dead Bodies Everywhere (behind the creepy music box riff) are all guitar through a talkbox but it totally sounds like some kind of synth.

Ball Tongue has got to have one of the greatest intros to any metal song in history. You can just feel the energy inside building up. And freak on a leash has the best build up to drop, mid song. Honestly the entire thing is just the perfect song imo.

I heard Korns first album in the 5th grade. My older sisters apartment burned down and her roommates copy of the cassette was one of the only things that survived. After listening to that it changed music for me forever
Swallow is a good riff. If you listen to Cold from The Nothing album, it sounds like Swallow just re-worked a bit in my opinion! I cover both of those songs on guitar and they are pretty much the same notes. I believe Swallow is one of the few Korn songs though that is tuned down a half step, most of the time they are tuned down a whole step.
My gift to you has always been my favorite korn song, it has a very seasons of the abyss vibe. Their woodstock 99 performance of this song still rules.

The whole Korn discography is a tone of amazing riffs and unique guitar sounds. I love this dudes, so happy that saw them live and they are still on the road after so many years. Long live korn!
I would like to add something from Untouchables, which I think is one of their heaviest albums. Especially with songs like Here to Stay, Bottled Up Inside or Beat it Upright.
@@sweepingdenial really? I didn't know that. I've always known Alive became Need To, then Alive. And Kage became Grandeur. But this is new news to me! Awesome

This group was my entire teenage experience in the early/mid 90's...I saw them at the first family values tour and still remember it like it was yesterday....and now I'm 40 haha. Such a revolutionary band who laid the foundation for many after them. #muchrespect
Cool to hear these guys sound genuinely excited about some of these riffs. Especially Freak on a Leash where they were like "we're kinda sick of playing that song but at least it has that badass heavy party" lol
I’ve seen KoRn live 5 times and I myself get a little disinterested when they play that song. But when they get to that heavy part, I’m always reminded of why I loved that song as a young teen.
What an amazing video. When Head guessed what song Munky was thinking of from his vague description - wow what a moment! Really shows how incredibly in sync with each other they still are. One of the best partnerships in metal music history.
Been a fan since 94! I was a 10th grader in high school. I listened to your debut album and it blew my friggin’ head off! It was the coolest, grooviest, heaviest thing I ever heard. I was hooked. Thank you for all the great music. It’s been fun, it’s been therapeutic, just fantastic! I’ve yet to see you live. It’s at the top of my list. Thanks for your music! 🤟🏼
The original S/T album & "Untouchables" are my 2 favourite Korn albums. I'm a bit perplexed as to why they didn't mention anything from "Untouchables". 🤔
Indeed, i can listen to almost the entire album, until that wake up hate and beat it up right weird shit. 😪 Those are some of the worst korn tracks ive ever heard (speaking about their glory days, before SYOTOS)
Old school Korn fan here... all the songs on the list are deserving but I would add Shoots And Ladders middle part, open riff to Lies, Kick the P.A. w/the Dust Bros. , Jingle Balls, middle part in Need To, It’s Me Again - the whole Fn song!, outro riff to Oildale, Justin, the first distorted guitars in Kill You (FUCK, the sick guitar tone, Korn at its finest), the prechorus to Bottled Up Inside and not Korn but Love & Death (Head’s side project) the middle part to Paralyzed (Fn heavy shit right there!!!) Head is an amazing vocalists in his own right, just saying. Fn Korn!!! So good!
My favorite all time riff from KoRn has to be after the chill droning bridge in Dead Bodies Everywhere.. some serious 7 string work on that part and probably my favorite KoRn song of all time!
From the men themselves. Holy fjcking shit what a lifetime to be a part of. Grateful and honestly surprised. Damn good list fellas. (If you happen to see this, thank you so much) 4:10
Corn was always about the Guitar Buddy bromance. Whether it be chug chug noise, or the typical , speak and then answer, type riffs. I remember I was 11 years old when I heard the first Korn album coming out of my sister's room. The second I heard I heard that sheer heaviness, as well as, the absolute bone dry contemporary tuned kit, it was a milestone breakthrough in music history and changed a lot of things. They were so simple yet so genuinely honest and thoughtful. Thanks boys
Nailed it great call. The entire bridge section is so great too. Jonathan’s melody writing n vocal performance is top notch on Issues and No Way is as good a display as any.
Rotting in Vain became a favorite of my, it has a special place in my heart. Because i totally lost the taste of Korn for a long time, right about 2009/10 and never listened another hit... Came back in 2020, and the first track i've took was Rotting in Vain. My god, the heavyness on that one is amazing. Never again, im never leaving them again.
Your band is one of my favorites of all time! I’m going to listen to this multiple times. The “GO” in freak on a leash is is definitely a build that fans crave…what a explosion of adrenaline! Just so superb! Thank you gents for every note y’all play👍 was thinking THOUGHTLESS would be discussed as well. There so much more than this 11 or whatever ! Pure talent gents!!!
Blind was the perfect intro to the band and the genre they pioneered. Like "are you ready" for a sound you've never heard before. First time I heard that was the moment I fell in love with music.
The riff at the beginning of Trash gets my vote. We used to prank people saying "hey check out this new funeral doom band we found," but it would be the first 10 seconds of Trash by KoRn haha. Also, WHAT no Here To Stay??? That beginning riff, oh man.
I love Korns heavy riffs. When Im down or in a bad mood I love to grab a guitar and let it all out, Korns music is perfect. My wife knows, when Korns coming out of the basement leave me alone til Im done I need that time. Best guitar Ive ever played it on by far is my K7, what an awesome guitar you guys made.
Kinda surprised blind wasn’t on here? It’s like the intro to all that came after and it’s like the defining sound that led to all the rest of these songs. That was the perfect opener to the album that made all this possible. Also ass itch needs more love, it really is one of the most intense songs I’ve heard, especially the ending. Life is peachy had such a unique vibe to it. It was maxed out heavy but also ethereal and relaxing in a way. They really did a great job finding new sounds and new ways to be heavy considering how blown out on drugs they were. But sometimes it’s that period where bands are in their 20s and taking all the drugs that they end up making something that intense and passionate. Not saying to do drugs but that seems to be a reoccurring theme for many bands. Once they get big and sober up they start making material that is “expected” instead of coming up with something straight from their soul because their heart was in it and they were doing it because they truly wanted to and were just having fun doing what they loved.
Love seeing this level of passion for their own music... absolutely incredible! But am I the only one that can't believe "Justin" didn't make the cut? That intro isn't the heaviest, but it gets me every time 🤘
I absolutely love Freak on a Leash. It was what got me into Korn seeing it on MTV in the 90’s. I was 9 years old or so… you nailed it perfect when you said it like that. I’ve listened to it so much I’m kinda like ahh whatever it’s that song again… but then that drop comes, that GO!!! and the shit hits the fan. Still sends shivers up my spine. I’m 36 years old now and I just got to be in a mosh pit for the first time listening to that song live. Saw Korn in Atlanta a few days ago. I’ve seen them a couple times before but I was in the bleachers… this time I had floor tickets and I went full on nuts when that part hit. I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.
KoRn at my funeral.....i was in high school when my friends seen you guys open for Marilyn Manson and said you have to hear this band and we tripped to your music for years.....And now you are my son's favorite band
Right, but their sound grew pretty stagnant on that album. I remember even Chino Moreno called them out after they released that album and kind of trashed them!
I like a big pre-chorus like Somebody Someone and then it just launches into the actual chorus. That structure is amazing! Love that song! I wish they would do more of that. I also like spontaneous, crazy weird breakdowns and stuff like that. Korn is still limitless and full of heaviness and energy! Love it!
I love how they are making all sounds when describing the part they're talking about. I know I'm not alone. I do that constantly when I walking around and people think I'm nuts!! Lmao
Man I love that song, all in the family. It’s stupid but at this point it’s pure nostalgia. Korn did this, it’s there forever, it puts a smile on many faces if for nothing else than a chuckle… just let it do what it does.
I was waiting for them to say "the opening to Here to Stay." Small intro, tiny pause, then DUNDUN- DUGGADUGGADUGGA- DUN! DUN DUN, DUGGADUGGA DIN! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of my favorite things about this band has been their desire to play for their fans. There is love for each other there too, listen to when James talks about old gigs w/ Brian and how he holds those memories. I'm not one for meeting celebrities but I'd love to meet KoRn. I'm still here because of their music, it's helped me in so many dark times. I would just want to thank them. Been rocking out to KoRn since 95 riding the bus to high school.
This is the absolute best, and what I love to see most of all! It's so cool and rare to hear what the band members actually think, and either love or not so much, or their own music! Sometime's I try to imagine the mind numbing monotony they must experience after playing some of these songs so many THOUSANDS or maybe TENS OF THOUSANDS of times through the years. All be it they are rock stars, and we love them to the fullest, and they are compensated generously of course! Still they must get sick of these songs some times, so I think it is so cool to hear what songs (or riffs from songs) they still get excited about! I love Korn and I hope they never quit this!!
So many heavy songs, it's really hard to narrow it down. I don't know if there are wrong answers. Untouchables and Take a Look in the Mirror are crazy heavy albums, yet not really represented in this list. That just goes to show how many they have come up with. I've always appreciated their uniqueness when it comes to writing songs. Simple, easy to hear riffs, that are ridiculously heavy.
I love how these two insanely talented guitarists are explaining their own riffs the way a novice Korn fan would explain it.
There’s really no better way to explain the sound of a riff without the instruments. Or a cat… I swear a7x was using a cat for their guitar solos

Ball Tongue has got to have one of the greatest intros to any metal song in history. You can just feel the energy inside building up.
And freak on a leash has the best build up to drop, mid song. Honestly the entire thing is just the perfect song imo.
Ball Tongue hands down the best song of them
I still enjoy Korn's music to this day. They are absolute legends!!!
Listen to them every night before bed.
“Bottled up inside” is by far one of the heaviest songs I’ve heard from Korn.
Man that breakdown… I feel that in my soul every time I hear it
Intro for Blind will always be the heaviest to me, hands down.
ive seen Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery a ton of times and i love it. not just because korn is in it but because it is genuinely funny
It was the first southpark episode i found funny, and the third episode i saw
first two was chinpokomon and starvin marvin in space
Jonathan’s monologue about perception always cracks me up
@@BeemanFunnyman there some pretty fucking good episodes
@@josequintero7250 i love that bit but i had to rewind it the first time cause he just says it so quickly i couldn't understand
NIBLET !
Here are some of my favorite Korn riffs:
1.) Clown (main riff, I also think the may be the heaviest riff.)
2.) Ball Tongue (opening riff)
3.) Fake (main riff)
4.) Lies (main riff)
5.) Falling Away From Me (main riff)
6.) Thoughtless (main riff)
7.) Politics (chorus riff. Munky deserves so much more credit for what he did during that period of Korn. Such good riffs.)
8.) Pop A Pill (opening riff)
9.) Love & Meth (opening riff)
10.) What We Do (2:04-3:06 is just downtuned groovy goodness)
11.) Punishment Time (opening riff)
12.) Insane (opening & breakdown)
13.) Rotting In Vain (main riff)
14.) Black Is The Soul (opening riff)
15.) Die Yet Another Night (2:42)
16.) Good God (opening riff)
17.) Please Come For Me (opening riff)
18.) The Darkness Is Revealing (breakdown riff)
19.) Idiosyncrasy (opening riff)
20.) H@rd3r (main riff)
21.) Cold (opening riff)
22.) Lost In The Grandeur (opening riff)
23.) Penance To Sorrow (opening riff)
24.) My Confession (opening riff)
25.) Worst Is On It’s Way (bridge & breakdown riff)
26.) Freak On A Leash (GO!)
27.) Ass Itch (main riff)
28.) Lost (opening riff)
29.) Victimized (opening riff)
30.) Predictable (opening riff)
31.) Chi (the main riff)
I agree , Clown is the heaviest korn riff, It's so gritty, rough and raw
All this does is solidify how heavy SOS was 😂
This is a whole ass compilation album
Yes, clown may be hands down the haviest.
I heard Korns first album in the 5th grade. My older sisters apartment burned down and her roommates copy of the cassette was one of the only things that survived. After listening to that it changed music for me forever
There 1st album will always be my favorite. I still listen to it.
Solid riffs. Surprised they didn't put Here To Stay on there. Or the intro to Swallow. Whew. What a riff!
It was their favorite, not our favorite. I'd probably pick 11 different things entirely - they have so many heavy riffs and moments to pick from.
That's what I watched the vid to see, if Swallow was on. That sounds almost like a meshuggah riff lol.
My gift to you has always been my favorite korn song, it has a very seasons of the abyss vibe. Their woodstock 99 performance of this song still rules.
Excellent choices!!! 68 yrs young and a fan from the beginning! Stay safe and have a great tour! 👍🏻🤞🏻🔥🖤
after being a fan for decades, this short video is so valuable, its rare to connect with you both on such a human level. your music has penetyrated nthe depths of our souls and i personally have always wanted to know you all better, , after all anyone who could make music like this has gotten to be from the same world as i and all of us.
i’m genuinely surprised “Counting” didn’t make it on this list……that riff HITS
Hell yea, that riff is just NASTY.
Wake Up Hate too
Embrace and Blame are really heavy too.
They have mentioned Insane which basically reworked riff from Beat It Upright.
@@sweepingdenial really? I didn't know that. I've always known Alive became Need To, then Alive. And Kage became Grandeur. But this is new news to me! Awesome
@@szwak49 i mean they did it accidentally - not on purpose. Also, recommend to compare riffs from Chi and The Hating.
These guys blew minds when they first broke out. Very original sound.
My Gift To You is EASILY heaviest KoRn riff ever! Love you dudes. From way back! Haha self-titled album introduced me to everything that my soul is made of to this day! Thank you for what you've done for us.
This group was my entire teenage experience in the early/mid 90's...I saw them at the first family values tour and still remember it like it was yesterday....and now I'm 40 haha. Such a revolutionary band who laid the foundation for many after them. #muchrespect
Id love to go back and see all the classic shows
Cool to hear these guys sound genuinely excited about some of these riffs.
Definitely the ending to Reclaim My Place after JD's last "wtf".....that's the heaviest korn riff I've heard.
I got gossebumps just from reading your comment. ❤
So much creativity in those guitars, it's insane!
DUDE, the very first riff Munky sang was what immediately came to mind for me. That break in Daddy is the quintessential heavy Korn riff, imo.
My personal fav is Camel Song. That chorus just hits hard! The bridge where Jon starts screaming " Take me away" is heavy as hell too!
For real. KoRn always had good exclusive songs on movie soundtracks. And Camel Song was no exception.
Camel song is one of my fave korn songs.
Camel song was fantastic. The whole Soundtrack to "End of days" was times better than the movie.
This is awesome! Our 2 guys discussing about the great music they’ve created! Love you H & M
A personal fav of mine is the opening riff to “Lies” off the first record
Watch my first video, do you agree? 😆
Love that song! 🙌 It's really intense and John's screams add more intensity to it, specially near the end.🔥
Untouchables has some of the heaviest riffs they ever did., strange they never mentioned anything from it
Korn is a RIFFS band…hard to narrow it down to a top 11, but Untouchables has some of their top riffs for sure
Embrace is their heaviest song
Eh. Bottled up inside, and beat it up right were heavy. The others were pretty tame.
Old school Korn fan here... all the songs on the list are deserving but I would add
Shoots And Ladders middle part, open riff to Lies, Kick the P.A. w/the Dust Bros. , Jingle Balls, middle part in Need To, It’s Me Again - the whole Fn song!, outro riff to Oildale, Justin, the first distorted guitars in Kill You (FUCK, the sick guitar tone, Korn at its finest), the prechorus to Bottled Up Inside and not Korn but Love & Death (Head’s side project) the middle part to Paralyzed (Fn heavy shit right there!!!) Head is an amazing vocalists in his own right, just saying. Fn Korn!!!
Thanks boys
"No way" is my favorite song from Issues. One of their heaviest and darkest korn songs and needless to say very underrated.
Wow, that’s a nice deep cut right there. My band just recorded an acoustic cover of that song. That chorus goes ham!
Nailed it great call. The entire bridge section is so great too. Jonathan’s melody writing n vocal performance is top notch on Issues and No Way is as good a display as any.
Great call! Very underrated song. Same with 'Counting'.
@@mikesaker9378 Counting is epic! That whole album is great, 4th best to me.
That's a good one to fall asleep to
Rotting in Vain became a favorite of my, it has a special place in my heart. Because i totally lost the taste of Korn for a long time, right about 2009/10 and never listened another hit...
Came back in 2020, and the first track i've took was Rotting in Vain. My god, the heavyness on that one is amazing. Never again, im never leaving them again.
3:57 This is why I really like the David Silveria era... his drumming style was one of a kind
@@Wr0zen dumb decision in the long run
@@travisspaulding9540 David is a great drummer but he has a sh!t personality.
@@LeadMe2TheBliss He’s Ight now but yeah, terrible person.
@@travisspaulding9540 what happened?
Love how they both have so much love for the vocalist. Lotta musicians don’t even listen to what we’re doing haha
Reclaim My Place
I've always thought the middle bit of 'Did my Time' was heavy af too. Love that part.
They should reuse that All In The Family riff and make a fully Korn song out of it!
Agreed
Clown and Ball Tongue, such killer riffs!!
I would add Beg For Me.
That main riff gets me fucking rock hard.
Absolute banger.🔥
These two are absolute monsters when they write together
Your band is one of my favorites of all time! I’m going to listen to this multiple times. The “GO” in freak on a leash is is definitely a build that fans crave…what a explosion of adrenaline! Just so superb! Thank you gents for every note y’all play👍 was thinking THOUGHTLESS would be discussed as well. There so much more than this 11 or whatever ! Pure talent gents!!!
Here To Stay always slaps my ears into immediate submission with that main riff
I’m so glad “my gift to you” is getting some love
Their first 5 albums had these closers that blew my mind
I hate you, cant you feel the pain, hate you cant you feel the pain
For me it has to be Blind. Nothing comes on heavier than that riff. The whole album is full of great riffs. Clown needs a special mention too
Blind was the perfect intro to the band and the genre they pioneered. Like "are you ready" for a sound you've never heard before. First time I heard that was the moment I fell in love with music.
Clown for sure!
I love it how they can sings his riffs! with so many details!! Thanks for your music, guys. Regards from Argentina.
Once they get big and sober up they start making material that is “expected” instead of coming up with something straight from their soul because their heart was in it and they were doing it because they truly wanted to and were just having fun doing what they loved.
very much agree with ass itch!! underrated song, its my all time favorite by korn
I guess because it's mostly not a Korn song. It's written by Jon's former Sexart band member.
that riff is literally just Scapegoat by Fear Factory
JUST SET ME FREE
0:14 form of korn!! :’)
Untouchables is the heaviest korn album in my opinion.
i think it's very underrated.
Right, but their sound grew pretty stagnant on that album. I remember even Chino Moreno called them out after they released that album and kind of trashed them!
@@LeadMe2TheBliss I think it was a natural progression of their sound that they absolutely perfected on Issues.
It's a very good heavy album I approve lol
Take a look in the mirror is heavier
Really surprised Here To Stay didn't make it, absolutely incredibly heavy and memorable riff
"Blind" and "Y'all want a single", I love those songs riffs
I love 16:25, "for today.. anyway it could change tomorrow". Its so funny the way he justs drop this perspective at the very end
Lmao
Beg For Me is an all time riff IMO, always loved Korn ❤️
Man I love that song, all in the family. It’s stupid but at this point it’s pure nostalgia. Korn did this, it’s there forever, it puts a smile on many faces if for nothing else than a chuckle… just let it do what it does.
Thank you guys for everything .
I was waiting for them to say "the opening to Here to Stay."
Small intro, tiny pause, then DUNDUN- DUGGADUGGADUGGA- DUN! DUN DUN, DUGGADUGGA DIN!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
imo "Dead Bodies Everywhere" got on of the heaviest riffs ever
The very end of that song when the title gets repeated is heavy as fuuuuuuck.
12:00 Munk could be forgiven for describing Metalica's 'Shortest Straw' haha
