In Infinity Pool, a couple are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors. That's only scratching the surface of the madness in our story, and in the end we are left with man questions about what it all means. We're breaking down the story, its important themes of identity and how it pertains to James, as well as explaining the ending.

I interpreted his staying on the island as a little more symbolic when I first watched it. Even though he could physically go back to his normal life, he was mentally trapped on the island after the traumatic experience.
Plus it doesn't seem very logistically likely for him to get back to the compound and into the closed hotel.

True… but the analogy is a bit more complex, as who is responsible for the government? Primarily….the people/voters.
If the people elect totally unqualified, inexperienced, ethically challenged grifters because they are theatric and give good speeches…then the voters are also responsible.
For example, there have been several referendums, one in the mid-90s, to move toward universal, gov healthcare in the US.
The Republicans made scare ads that this would lead to socialism, government “death panels” etc and the everyday Republicans, who would benefit most from a gov, universal health system….voted it down.

The clone wouldn't act like a new born just trying out his new body (since the psyche or adult brain is still cloned from the orginal, how would he remember/fathom Gabby or lust or even curiosity of death)
But you could be right like if it's like a "new human" the point was to make sure he(the clone) would remember his crime of running over the native person
It's like the moment they killed the native he asexually reproduced into two people (like a microbacteria)

Some magic goo can literally create perfect 1:1 clones memories and all and no one outside of the island knows about it and all it’s used for is capital punishment? Riiiight. Also what is the goo? Where does it come from? How is it made? How does a clone retain their memories? Like the goo just kinda exists with no explanation as to how. Why are the people of the island allowing these murder tourists to do this? Is that even explained? Who greenlit this mess?

The clone survives the process, not the original: During the cloning process, they pump in red and blue liquids (12:34) and then show him lying down (12:49). The first 'clone' is encased in red silicone and lying down (13:17). This suggests that the lying down person is the original.
This may make it more horrifying because the officials lied about who dies and actually allow the revenge ritual to kill the person who committed the crime.
It also convinces the new person that they are a direct continuation of the original person. This new person could have absolved themselves of all the actions that the original had done and gone home and lived a new life. Instead, they are trapped in a cycle of depravity.

Here's my interpretation: Mia Goth is drugs personified. Both behavior and sensations of drug abuse have duality, which is reflected in a couple of the masks (along with trypophobia, which could symbolize drug-induced deterioration). Skarsgard both leaves and remains (during the rainy season) because drugs are a trap one can never leave (and because we don't know who is a clone or how many clones exist). One could consider the movie miscast because Skarsgard is so big and strong, but drugs can make anyone weak and dependent. He even gets a knife and a gun, but can't free himself. He trades a reliable wife for a woman who acts like a horrible drug.
