I'd argue capitalism is at least partially to blame, too. Gorden was under that much stress because it's work or starve. There's plenty of guys who commit the phenomenon known as family annihilation without the convenience of an evil spirit from a mental hospital to blame.

killerplunger By the 80s, mental hospitals weren’t full of fun, but most had decent care for those who absolutely needed it. Then Regan shut most federal hospitals down so patients could be cared for “through the community,” while providing no funds for this. Not surprisingly, many horribly impaired people ended up on the streets, and an average stay in hospital after a suicide attempt is a couple days because that is all insurance pays for. Which is worse?

Session 9 is fantastic. I think the movie spells out that it's a supernatural terror, and that Simon is a malevolent being that exists. Simon's voice doesn't come out as a variation of Mary's voice, like Billy and Princess. And when he says where he lives, he even explains he's not one of Mary's identities. Simon is an entity that preys on the minds of the weak. Why he waited in the asylum for so long isn't anything I can answer, but once he found Gordon he was set with his new host.

I have had conversations with my wife - we love and own this movie on DVD - regarding that scene where Gordon is in his van, looking at his wife and baby as they enter the house. It is all shot from his angle, in a van, across the street. I have several questions regarding that scene at 4:53
      1) Where is this insane street? Cars are flying by at 45 mph, inches away from the tiny property line, just perfect for raising a toddler... And is there no driveway? This leads to the second question: Are we seeing the back yard or the front? Who designed this house?? Who puts a stove directly in front of a door like that?
Either way, the shot is framed for us to see the pot of water on the stove. My guess would be that they used a giant pot so we could see it from so far away. The director has said that Gordon came to the USA to pursue the American Dream with hard work, and we see what that is worth in this one very important shot.

Also this explanation didn't really explore the possibility that Gordon is a past patient of the psyche hospital. They mention early on how old patients are still trying to get in and Gordon is clearly affected by different rooms on day 1. It could be that re-entering the hospital after all the years brought back suppressed violent emotions and the rest is history. Nothing confirms this theory but just a thought!

My conclusion was that Gordon was the one in the psychiatric unit and his co-workers were the different manifestations of his personalities.
Basically that Gordon is actually Mary and the whole movie was him just re-living the murder of his family. There’s that shot of Gordon after killing the new guy Craig where his face is juxtaposed to Mary’s photo.
I also thought Phil was the psychiatrist, especially when he tells Gordy to ‘wake up’.

Happy to see people talking about this movie. Deserves more recognition than it has gotten.

I remember Gordon's ending being so much worse then described. It sounds like he hurts himself, as an excuse to beat and kill his wife. I took it as him being contaminated after seeing that chair in the first walkthrough

"Session 9"(2001) is one of the 100 best horror movies of all time for sure! This masterpiece is very atmospheric and sometimes scary as Hell!

I usually watch through the whole video but I actually turned this video off, found the movie online, watched the entirety of it, and now I’m back, and can say I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it yet do the same. It was VERY good. One of the best low budget movies I’ve ever seen period.

Everyone I know who works in something like Asbestos removal smokes weed so I don't understand why Phil is hiding the fact he's buying weed other than the fact he doesn't want to share his hook up

I LOVED this movie. I remember watching it the first time and not getting the whole story, then read and watching a few videos about it before watching it again.

Session 9 was such a fantastic movie, one of the few that have actually spooked me. So glad it's getting the appreciation it deserves

“It’s a good thing his knife was brand new. Real sharp. Haha haha.
And then, just so her mommy and daddy wouldn’t get mad, I told her to cut them up too.”

    • It's weird to see old movies and shows with people before they were famous or connected. In this case, _CSI_ and _CSI: NY._
    • It's a shame that they tore down Danvers to put up some stupid condos. 😒
    • This movie is confusing and hard to figure out exactly what happened; there's too much room for doubt, even with the "reveal". The implication is that Gordon was crazy, but was he a patient or not? What is the timeline? How/why was he out? I suppose we're supposed to get that he was committed to the hospital, but was released when it shut down, but why were his photos still up on the wall in his old room? 🤨 Moreover, why were the others acting like there's nothing amiss and they were just working an ordinary job with him? What about how he kept talking like his family were alive, why did the others just ignore that? There's too many holes.

Oh my God.... I don’t remember men looking like such hoodlums back then. The mustaches, the mullets.... I guess all the AquaNet I was inhaling really affected my judgement.

I slightly remember watching this movie like 2 or 3 years ago. The scene with the guys talking about how long they'll work and how much they'd get paid, would randomly pop up in my head and it'd bother me as I forgot how the movie went after that scene. Thank you so much for covering this! I'm definitely gonna have to watch it again when I get the chance.

I love Session 9. One of my favourites. It gets better every time I watch it because you see more in it. I've seen it three times. I wait a few years each time and watch again. I'm always amazed at what I didn't see before and love it more each time! Yet it's so tragic but so well done!
