- Need to replace your Volkswagen's struts? This video will show you how! This is the start to finish guide for replacing front struts on a Volkswagen Passat, Jetta, Golf, GTI, Tiguan, and more. It's very common to have strut failures and coil spring failures, which will require this job to be done.

This is by far the best informative video on this topic on RUclips. Straight to the point, no bullshit. Awesome work.
Good stuff
Wow, perfect timing! I have just received new struts, shocks and springs to put in my MK6 GTI! Thanks for posting this :)
That's awesome timing! Best of luck with your install!
using this video as a guide to replace struts on my 2014 passat. 4 inches of my coil spring broke off the other day so its time to replace every
thing.
Totally, just did the job, thanks for not walking me through all the back story. BTW, my driver side strut spring broke at 60k, a 2014 Jetta SE 1.8T. If you follow it up and spiraling around from the bottom plate about five inches, it snapped. I noted a clunking noise when driving over bumps in my driveway. It's still drivable for a few miles at a time while waiting for the part to change the front assemblies. Upon inspecting the snapping point, I noted a fatigued area that had rusted about 1/8" into the spring material. The rest of the break is fresh once it finally failed. It's a shame. Years ago, there were a few spring makers in America and Europe. Spring steel is really tricky to get right but they had it down pat. Now I think only tractor trailer springs are still made right but who knows? I can't believe a strut broke at 60k and I drive like its an old lady. Thanks globalism! It amazes me anyone can function anymore having to screw around with issues like this all of the time.
Best video ive found for this job! Thanks so much 2013 Jetta looks exactly the same.
I'm replacing the front struts on my '81 VW pickup. I've had the struts for months and been reluctant to start, since I didn't have a clue about how to do it. Now at least I have a clue! Mine don't look like yours, they are cylinders without the big springs. But at least I know a lot more about it than I did, after watching your video.
Very informative, and straight to the point. I’ll be replacing my struts on a ‘12 VW GTI
On time for me too, new struts are in the car and I thought a refresher is good, your is a great concise step by step. Thanks, G
Thanks for the video, I'll be doing this soon and really liked how you explained the process at the start before you got into it. If you want some feedback for your next videos it helps if you say tool sizes as you're using them!
Thanks for the video! Getting ready to do my wifes 2013 Passat with 150,000 miles. Both sides are just blown... Can't believe she still has tires left! I drove it for the first time in a while and couldn't believe how bad they were! Gonna throw some LCA's in while I'm there.
thanks again!
Happy to help, good luck with the project!
Best video I have seen for strut replacement, to the point, great explinations, perfect for DIY garage/driveway thanks for your time getting this together to help others, well done :) !!!!!
Doing struts on my 2013 Jetta TDI Premium and so far your video has helped the most! Dealer told me I had a broken spring up front at inspection time but so far both look just fine. Still at a 120k miles the car can use a refresh up front. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I read that the coil springs don't need to be replaced unless is broken.
@@ricardoitza8626 The repeated compression and expansion cycles during operation can cause the spring to lose its 'springiness'.
When this happens, the spring is no longer able to support as much weight as it once could, leading to sagging.
@@scarletturk3892 ok thanks
Replacing my suspension this weekend, coil broke close to the top (second golf now to see this) thanks for the video
You’re definitely going to want a realignment after doing this job. Nice video dude
2005 Jetta Spring broke at the bottom area. Thanks for your informative video.
Great explanation. About to do this job on my CC.
I am about to do the same. on my 2009 cc sport 2.0. where did you purchase the struts and springs as a complete set. any additional info on the process will be helpful.
2009 Vw Passat B6 2.0 T. 3rd time replacing the front in almost 10 years.
They just love to rattle don’t they
Very good video thanks.
What an excellent presentation (what everyone else is saying…big surprise there)
BTW: 2010 VW Tiguan, 148k, is the job I’m working on
Very good video. Nothing that I am aware is broke; 2012 passat has over 200K miles and I was recently informed by Discounts Tire my tires are wearing in the inside up front and my mechanic said it is most likely the shocks and struts being worn and alignment
Good context appreciate you 👍
Great video. Guess VW strut replacement is difficult than other cars. I assume my 2014 beetle is similar to this....😂
Great video, how ever I’d would have liked to have seen the process of how you compressed the spring,is there a particular way to fit spring,is the top and bottom of the spring the same, any particular way the top mount fits,
Cash my friend, this is a great video! currently doing this on my 2013 jetta SE haha.
Glad it helped, hopefully it went smooth! See you this weekend🤘🏻
Looks like you used a complete strut for replacement, which brand did you use and how is it holding up? Thank you! All I can find for my mk5 Rabbit in the complete strut kits are questionable brands like FCS and Unity Auto, TRQ etc.
Amazing thanks for u information
2007 Volkswagen eos 2.0tdi. nearside coils broke in the front and back, video is a great help
Cool car! Thanks for watching, and best of luck on your repair
Great video, my springs both snapped on the front of my 2012 golf wagon. I found one piece wedge between the brake line and fender liner. The piece came from the upper section of the spring, so the car still is driving ok, but is a bit sloppier.
Yikes hopefully you can replace them soon!
Nice1..Cashed & thank u
2014 vw passat wolfsburg edition, both front strut assemblies, strut mate both, control arm w/ball joint both sides, left spindle knuckle, left front hub assembly, left outer and inner tie rods
Do you match up the strut with the old one in terms of how far to put it in the knuckle? That's what I did but I haven't found any video or instruction that confirms nor denies
I have a 2014 Jetta Se 1.8 lt turbo sedan would you be able to tell what loaded strut I would need in order to replace mine ?
I Am so glad I found this video I'm about to replace both front springs which broke on the bottom end. they both broke within two weeks of each other! the car I'm replacing them on is a 2013 vw cc 2.0tsi again brilliant video mate! 👌
Glad I could help, good luck!
@@CashedOutCars Job complete took quite a few hours. But car is totally different which is ace because I was only swapping springs as my shocks were fine I needed some decent spring clamps and the impact was a massive help to get the nylon lockout off the end as I didn't have a deep enough ring spanner. Thanks for your video though couldn't of done it without it cheers. Have you done a video of rear strut removal?
Thank you!
Replacing struts and springs on a 09 golf mk6. The joys of vws money 💰 💰 💰
Just finished both fronts on a 2017 golf Alltrack. Not enough room on that model to get shock out of knuckle without removing cv axle. If you go this direction, get yourself a bolt an inch longer than factory axle bolt. Use it to pull cv axle back into hub. Factory bolt is too short to start threads. My factory was 16x70mm 1.5 pitch. Used 16x100mm to reinstall axle. Makes job so much easier.
2008 Rabbit/Golf (same car) It has a lot of vibration on the freeway, they are leaking and the motor pool guy at work says yeah, you need shocks. He has a spring compressor so that should help. Any tips on buying, what's good, what to avoid? I have a set of the sockets for that nut (3 squares?) from changing the hubs.
Mime just broke at the top hat. Heard what seemed was a ball joint clinking. Wife takes car and tells me that car making really weird noise. Take it and notice it. Take wheel off and see the boot is detached. Spring is still intact though, but will change out whole strut assembly. Thanks for this video. I own a 2016 Jetta.
Thank you for a very informative, clear and useful video. I'm going to renew the shocks and top mounts on my MK4 Golf. I hear the driveshaft needs to be popped on the side with the longer shaft to get the strut out. Was hoping to avoid this. Does compressing the spring help with removing the strut?
How did it go? About to do mine for the first time
@@kaidenperlitz4399 I've still not done it yet 😅
Nice video. Tho Ive heard the 3 top mount bolts should be tightened only when the tires are back on and lowered so you are tightening when its at its ride height. Is this a thing??
Are the struts identical on the driver and passenger sides? Because I noticed that the sway bar link connection is on the right side
Can't get the axle nut loose on my 2015 Sportwagen. Used a 15/16 socket and rounded it off. Sheesh. What is that size in metric with 12 points? BTW, probably the most professional video on car repair I've ever seen.
I pretty positive it’s a 24mm 12 point socket.
Thank you for the video it's a lifesaver I have a metallic clunking sound in the front around the area of the strut. Is that how you can tell that they need replaced
Replacing front struts on a ‘12 jetta both springs broke driver and passenger sides. Just did the timing belt too.
Thanks for posting. I just did front quick struts on my 2005 Toyota Matrix . No need tor disconnecting the axel and the ball joint , only the stabiliser bar link. Can you do the same here or its too tight ? The reason I have to replace them on my 2008 Rabbit is broken springs.
It's worth a shot but I believe you'll need to remove the axle. You can do it without removing the ball joint on some cars!
I have a 2009 Volkswagen rabbit and I don’t know the size of the axle nut it is I have various sizes of T bits but unfortunately they did not fit what size did you use ? Thanks!! 🙏🏼
Great video! Thank you. I have a 2009 vw cc sport 2.o. need to replace the struts and springs. I am having difficulty finding the complete assembly. any suggestions?
Same here for my MK5...seems like just a bunch of second tier companies or worse. What did you go with? Thanks.
P.S. I've been reccomended the FCS complete struts by another RUclipsr, but they are so cheap...he claims he's put over two years of driving on them and they are solid...idk.
Great video 👍🏽
Question. I'm looking to change the coil springs on my 2019 Atlas. You think it's a similar process? A shop wants to charge me $900 for labor.
I would guess that it is. How many miles are on the car? It may still be under warranty if you go directly through volkswagen
@@CashedOutCars 13k miles. I bought lowering springs for it.
to get the strut out of a Mk7 google it and find a guy did it with a bottle jack between the knuckle and the pan with the spring on top. Works well.
Is there a part number for the entire assembly? I can't find the info you mentioned, "below."
Great video !! My question is > DO I always have to take out the axle bolt? How do I know that I have to take it off. I really do not want to take it out, What do you think? Thank you very much. Kind regards, Walter
Taking the bolt out gains you some mobility since you can move the knuckle around more
2014 Jetta TSI with 200k km on it when my front passenger side coil spring snapped today… Ahhh VAG cars… the 200k km mark is when they really start slipping…. Changed the driver side wheel hub/bearing on it myself less than two weeks ago… let’s hope the struts will be last for a while lol
Hey I got a 2015. How has your work held up? A shop quoted me $1325 for this job. I'd rather do it myself.
@@travisharrington5819 took awhile to get my struts, and springs (extremely hard to find non-OEM high quality replacement springs I found). I set up the struts springs bump
Stops, boots and mounts at home and I plan on putting it all together once I get a decent day. It started snowing earlier than usual where I am but I’m hoping in a week I’ll have them mounted. Watch lots of videos, align the strut mounts properly, get a strut cup spreader tool to make life easy, spray lots of liquid wrench and it should be fine. I would think the hub I changed two months ago would have been worse but even that came out in an hour or so
@@travisharrington5819 FYI went at it today all day with no luck. I got the old strut out (all three strut mount bolts were seized and had to be cut off). I also managed to get the old strut out of the cup and out of the way. I don’t know if it’s the low quality strut spreader tool that I got or what the issue is but it’s been four hours of trying to get the new strut in the cup with no luck.
@@travisharrington5819 I got some tips that worked for me. Spreading the strut cup enough for the struts to fit I found was the absolute most time consuming task, especially with the cheap Amazon generic spreader bit I was using… after hours of frustration I ended up using a 12 inch wrecking bar to spread the nuckle and slid the strut in that way. Still need a lot of blows though. On the other side I ended up taking everything off and it all went in much easier. I took the caliper off, as well as the tie rod, allowing me to seat the strut in the nuckle completely off the vehicle. To be honest it was the most tedious job I have ever done on the Jetta and am glad I never need to do it again (hopefully).
I’ll do mine on a CC 2013! Thanks
Great step by step video. But it would have helped to have the torque setting and little easier to find . I am still looking for them.. You said at the bottom and I can't find them any where.
The bottom of the spring on my LF strut is broken, 2012 Golf. Currently unsafe to drive, but new struts are on the way.😎👍
Would this be the same set up for the scirocco
did you have to tap the drive shaft out some video they do thanks
Is it similar to do this on a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta? Is it similar to the same way?
2013 GLI. Passenger front coil spring broke at the bottom mount. Replacing today .
my 2015 passat started making a squeaking noise after ever speed bump front driver side so im here now lol im confident to do it myself now tho
Very informative. There is a squeaky noise while i am steering in stationary position. I am wishing thats not a broken spring.
The strut on top has position?
Will this be good for a 2004 Jetta?
What do you mean when you say put the ball joint back in the same place? Like make sure you put the bolts back in the same holes? Or if it rotates and then you put it back together then you will need an alignment? Thanks
The ball joint has some freedom even when the bolts are in, so you need to get it back to the same exact place otherwise you're going to need an alignment. You may need one anyway, if the struts are significantly different. A trick is to spray paint the ball joint / suspension to have an exact outline for where to line it up
Or use a marker and mark where they sat prior. Imagine spray paint may indicate better but also make a bigger mess.
Don't know about your country but in Scotland the strut top mounting nuts always turn and become a pain !!
Should you replace that axle bolt or is it good to reuse?
If I remember correctly, It's recommended that you replace it since it's a stretch bolt (torque to yield). That said, I HAVE resused them, it's not recommended however.
Be careful when striking the wheel barring assembly. It’s just cast steel and will dent and mar easily.
Getting ready to change passenger front strut assembly on 2012 Jetta GLI Autobahn
Me too lol, same exact thing
Is the front the same as a EOS ?
I'm gonna try to squeeze Suzuki Jimni springs in my Caddy. I think it'll work. It'll add 3 or 4 inches of lift
Good info. One thing I'd add is what a bitch it can be to get the strut out and back into the knuckle (or upright), I'll make a little spreader tool but getting that strut in and out doesn't seem like it should be so difficult. I notice you were rapping/tapping it with a hammer to get it to seat, I did the same, it helps.
How long it took for you for the first time pls ?
Never hit a hammer with a hammer
Drivers side spring broke 5 inches from bottom where did yours break?
Just a couple of questions. How fat down should the strut go into the knuckle and how tight should the knuckle bolts be tightened? I'm afraid to over tighten, and I want to make sure the strut isn't too low or too high.
The strut has a stopping point in the knuckle. All the way down and where the bolt holes line up. Look online for torque specs for you specific model.
@@hardcore4476 Thank you.
front spring broke on my 2010 volks Passat wagen 2L turbo...looking at replacing complete assembly, but dont know the strut size...50mm or 55mm? Do you know the correct size?
They very bye model. Best thing to do is call dealership to verify by vin#
@@hardcore4476 I called two dealers and they didn't know the size...go figure! I picked up the 55mm size and it was the right fit.
🙌🏽🙌🏽
I have an 2010 EOS and it does not work. I ended busting the ball joint bolts for nothing because it just doesn't work. So now I have to replace the ball joint, get an alignment. There's just not enough play to get the strut back into the knuckle even with the ball joint out of the way. then there's the brake line and ABS sensor that restrains any movement. What am I missing?
Unclip the lines and get them out of the way.
So how do we know the bottom of the strut is in all the way? Does it snap in or something?
It stops and the holes line up..
What if your axle comes out of place how can you put it back in
Good for mk7?
Bottom 4" broke off the spring on 2015 passat diesel TDI
Does left and right struts different or are they interchangeable?
0:15 not gonna lie. I thought your arm was all out of wack.
Mine did not break but it did wear out on my cabrio 2001
Not broken, but after 130k, they are done on my 12 jetta se.
2012 jetta just had a spring break.
I've noticed every single vw strut repair is always on the driver side. Why haven't any of you people done a class on the passenger side strut on particularly the 2006 vw Jetta? Because it is such a complicated and time consuming job? Is that it? I'm waiting for the master mech to come and show us how it's done. I reckon this is a challenge. ~Dok Washington
Mine broke at the same place : bottom spring coil at 147k miles. The rear ones broke at 89k....
2012 jetta wagon first time doing them with 245K on it
2017 vw golf.. thx
Any one know what size the axle nut is?
24mm I believe.
I have a couple questions can you help?b
My daughters spring has broken at the bottom
Mk5 Jetta 2.5 06
170000km
"It's and odd size" .... whats the damn size?
MK4 2003 Jetta broke RF coil on bottom
VW springs are not well made.its very common for them to break.i don't know about other car manufacturers but my cars need spring replacement quite often
Just did the front struts on my 2012 Tiguan and this may save someone else from wasting their time like I did. The 3 top bolts holding the strut will feel like they are loosening then the nut on the underside will start spinning due to rust buildup on the end of the bolt. Once they start spinning, they become borderline impossible to get out due to limited access on the underside. It's difficult to even get them to tighten again. Save yourselves hours of grinding/drilling out the bolts by just overtightening them from the start with a powerbar until the tops sheer off and the struct will come right out. The new struct will come with replacement bolts.
New struts don’t come with new top mounts so breaking the bolts is a very bad idea unless u have new top mounts aswell
