  • We are discussing using a refugium on our system. There are pros and cons to just about everything in this hobby. One of the items that have garnered a lot of discussion over the years is the refugium.
    While on our recent visit to TopShelf, we fell in love with their refugium full of red algae and Monos and Scats. Their refugium was unique regarding how water circulated within it, and we tried to copy it to some degree in our 60-gallon cube refugium. Here we demonstrate the exact way we are setting up ours, and over time we will share what we see in the tank in terms of the health of the corals and the parameters of the tank.
    Since some feel that a refugium can take out too many nutrients and trace elements like iron, both of which can hurt or inhibit coral growth, we want to see if this is true.

    Is that the Seaopora I found for you? I wish I’d have known the overflow was coming out- they make them without it, would have sold you that instead.

      we had it going but felt red algae suck too much barium and potassium out.

      @PoloReef what setup would you recommend for a 75-100 reef with not a lot of coral. But 40-50 small, totally coral safe fish?

    I have seen TSA refuge in a tour video of TSA and thought it was very cool it would even make for a interesting display tank if you can get the flow right. Off topic for your consideration I have noticed that Mr Piccoso has become very neutral in his color and being the fish nerd I am I had to figure it out so I looked at all the normal things health diet stress tank no flags is it soulcile so I looked into Desjardin soulcile structure and found that they frome monomus pairs and the male is always the largest of the pair maxing at 16ins females are smaller they are female till 7 7.5ins 8ins + and they start to transition into males. So Mr Piccoso is a sexualy muter male with no mate = neutral color give him a foxy lady and watch the magic man come back to his full glory! If you decide to go for it I hope you will share it without a doubt it will be a sight to behold 😊

    I'm confused. What is the purpose of the monos and scats in the refugium?

    • @PoloReef
      @PoloReef  Год назад

      actually to feed the macro !

    • @johnnymotorboat8824
      @johnnymotorboat8824 Год назад +2

      Yeah. The purpose of the refugium is to feed off of your tanks nutrients

      @@PoloReef
      Most macro algae 'fuges are set up with the idea of using them to export nutrients by harvesting the algae from time to time and maybe give amphipods a place to reproduce too. But keeping fish in the 'fuge to make sure they are getting enough nutrients from the fish waste sort defeats the purpose.

    • @insanity4224
      @insanity4224 Год назад

      @@siggyincr7447 perhaps the nutrients were reading 0’s. I can see someone either feeding more or adding fish in this situation. Just a different way to do it since these fish aren’t great for a reef.

    Makes no sense to remove the overflow from that tank as it could have acted as the main strainer and ensured no issues with water level or back flow......
