- On Saturday, August 24, the Union Cabinet gave its nod to the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), aimed at ensuring government employees receive a guaranteed pension after retirement. The scheme is set to take effect from April 1, 2025, as announced by the government.
This decision comes in response to widespread discontent among government employees regarding the New Pension Scheme (NPS), which the Opposition has capitalised on for political advantage. In response to the growing dissatisfaction, opposition-led states such as Himachal Pradesh (2023), Rajasthan (2022), Chhattisgarh (2022), and Punjab (2022) have reverted to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
Shikhar Dhawan, regarded as one of India's top white-ball openers, has officially retired from international cricket at the age of 38. While stepping back from representing India, Dhawan hinted at continuing his career in league cricket, with a focus on the IPL. Dhawan's last appearance for India was in December 2022 during an ODI against Bangladesh. Over his international career, he accumulated 10,867 runs in 269 matches, including 24 centuries and 44 half-centuries, solidifying his place as a key figure in Indian batting over the past decade.
