      Yep, but these things aren't for normal people. All of these 100 plus thousand dollar toys are just that. Toys for wealthy folks most of whom will never put more than 20,000 miles on them before they sell them off. It's the same reason you can get one of those class C motorhomes that's barely three years old with less than 20k on the odometer for less than half the new price. There just isn't any in between. It's either dirt cheap but it won't get you where you want to go or it's so expensive you could rent a jeep and all the camping supplies for a month, stay in luxury hotels when you needed a break from roughing it, eat at the finest restaurants every night you're in town and still have enough cash left to do it all again every year for the next 15 to 25 years. Unless you're a skilled mechanic and fabricator adventure vehicles are cost prohibitive for all but the wealthy and those who live in them full time.

    Most people who opt for the $3000 water heater and indoor shower only use it once. I didn't bother. I'm satisfied with the outdoor shower (including water heater) for 1/3 the price. What this is NOT is a class C, with Onan genset, relegated to road travel, or a camper van, also relegated to roads, but with less comfort.
    My point is that you can spend as much as you want on a truck, and a camper, or you can sleep under a tarp by the freeway overpass. The choice is yours.

The canister toilet well if you have a kid it’s nice to have that way if he or she has to go in the middle of the night. There was an incident where someone left their camper in the middle of night and a mountain lion was waiting outside. So how far away from civilization you going to go. If you don't have a true hard-top camper YOU will be dinner OR your camper will be torn to shreds! That's why I want ONLY full fibreglass or composite hard camper tops.

    It appears that people are finally starting to realize the value in full size trucks for overlanding rigs. There have certainly been many over the years that have used them, but it seems in the last couple of years they have finally hit mainstream. A full size truck actually has power to move the weight added for overlanding and torque to turn the larger tires with ease. Nice setup!

    • @SixMonthsIn
      @SixMonthsIn 2 года назад +1

      No. No they are not. This rig is ridiculous. All you need is a Jeep and tent. You don't need any of this and you cannot go very far off-road with that long wheelbase. If you consider "overlanding" to be driving on the highway, then this is perfect for that!

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures 2 года назад

      @@SixMonthsIn I guess our definitions of overlanding are different. Normally I'm against all the excess of overlanding, pretty much any vehicle with food, water, and somewhere to sleep makes an overlander in my opinion. For an off-roader the smaller Jeeps, Tacomas, Rangers, Frontiers, etc are much better, but people are always surprised at full size trucks being in moab, black bear pass, or other "hard" trails. I agree, for true off-roading a skinnier, shorter wheelbase vehicle is better, but for overlanding long distances to remote areas, the full size trucks are soo much more comfortable and can handle decent offroad situations. However they don't like mud or sand very well because they are so heavy.

    • @SixMonthsIn
      @SixMonthsIn 2 года назад +1

      @@EngineAdventures I don't disagree. I have a 2007 F350 with a Lance 990 truck camper and I know the limitations of my rig. Everything about my rig says "don't drive it offroad". But this rig weighs almost as much as my 12,400 lbs rig so it does not make sense to take this truck any place but the highway. "Overlanding" is just a marketing term. Fake bead locks, giant ridiculous bumpers you don't need, 37" tires and all of those boxes hanging off the back are just "coolness" factors and would be the first things I got rid of.

      @@davidheckart639 My rig is not built for off-road, I can assure you of that. I spent $16k on a 2007 F350 Supercab DRW with the 6.8L V10 and $7,200 on a 1998 Lance 990 so my total cost was $23,200. But, I have a ton of creature comforts for much less. I can easily tow a Jeep behind my rig and do all of the off-roading I want and still have all the comforts of home. It has 400W of solar, a 40A DC-DC charger, 40 gallons of fresh water (plus 6 gallons for water heater) and an additional 40 Gallons in the rear behind the seats in the truck. Besides the freshwater in the camper , it has a dry bath, toilet and a sink in the bathroom , I have an outside shower on the truck complete with a 12V water pump and hot and cold water. The hot water is supplied using a heat exchanger in the heater hose on the truck engine and basically supplies endless hot water on demand. This means I have 80 gallons of water available, 2 separate water systems where my wife and I can take hot showers at the same time. I only weigh slightly more than the FWC and truck in this video at 12,400 lbs. It is not an off-road rig since the camper hangs 3 ft 3 in off the bed of the truck (where the 22 gallon gray tank and 26 gallon black tank are housed). Departure angle is ridiculous and it has a 158" wheelbase. But, I am a helluva lot more comfortable in my rig than anyone will be in that Hawk. My camper is 23 years old and has never leaked and is wood-framed. There are no FWC campers that old that don't leak or haven't experienced water damage. I have been all over the country in my rig in temps down to -13F with no issues. So, I spent only 16% of the cost of that rig and been more comfortable and traveled more. I've been places no Super Duty truck has any business going but I have done it for a lot less money and never had a problem.

    I own a 2020 FWC Grandby on a Superduty F350 crew cab. I big advantage to a FWC, similar to above, is that if you already own the truck you can get into a nicely appointed Grandby for ~$35K. Leave your truck bed on the truck and remove the Grandly as needed. Maybe 30 min to remove and an hour to put back on. The other big advantage is the sort of rig I own and shown in the video is MUCH more capable off roading than a ~$150K Sprinter. Also towing is hugely better in a rig like this. Where the Sprinter shines is driving down the road and accessing the back for a sandwich or cold drink. Talking to Sprinter owners the fuel mileage is about the same- within 2mpg. Also covert camping is a Sprinter is a lot easier. These pop up campers are hard to hide. If you need to buy the truck and all of the associated off roading gear as well as the FWC - it is going to cost you! That being said, I see a ton of sprinter camper conversions out and about. So, someone has the money or can get a loan.

      @@garretlewis4103 guys I love meandering around your state as well as pa and wva. When I was stationed there I had two vehicles...one was an older 2 wheel drive regulator cab f!50 with an old fashioned high camper cap and tire chains. I went through all the forest roads and up and down places with bf Goodrich tires. Then camp. Get out and walk alot for hunting and fishing. Beautiful. Then also had a 96 grand Cherokee four wheel drive as well and that was like a billy goat. Took out the back seats and slept in that too. Both vehicles had their advantages. I really enjoyed walking and hiking around. Met some awesome folks inclythe guys who run their bear dogs out there in the mountains west of 81. That was fun! Back here in ne ohio it's nice but very limited public land so more congested. South eastern ohio is nice. But I miss the hills in your state but arent aw blessed to go canoeing in the Adirondacks and then hike pa and wva and va and TN and NC and not have to drive out west? Awesome! Hope you guys have a great fall!

    The only advantage a Sprinter gives over a truck camper is basic footprint! But that’s also the greatest shortcoming. Some might add prices on truck campers can get high, but the Sprinters can be costly, with around half the available power and capacity to go places and carry/tow. Myself? I would prefer a small Med hight Sprinter to fit in my garage. But that’s if I were alone. But with a wife an two dogs? A 3500 HD/SD, single rear wheel 6’ bed truck camper, (flat beds are a HOA NO no! , in mid level trim, from either of the big three with the best deal at the time. With a four seasons slide in camper, Arctic preferably, or Lance. As I much prefer to drive a truck than van.

    No argument that it is a very nice set up. For winter maybe. As many have already been pointing out, no A/C and you got yourself a miserable living situation. As for whether or not it is a better option than a "Sprinter van" set up, that all depends on if you want to camp, or have adventures away from the camp area. I would take a Sprinter fully loaded and tow a side by side or boat or dirt bikes. And Bobs your uncle. :)

    • @SixMonthsIn

      Condensation is a nightmare in in FWC models. Aluminum is a great conductor of the cold and you have to wipe everything down every morning after breathing all night. I have never seen a used FWC camper that did not have moisture problems and wood rot to some degree. The floor and the sides are wood and are just as susceptible to moisture problems as any other camper. They have seals just like every other camper that need to be maintained. Most of their image is just "marketing". They are no more durable than any other popup and are harder to repair if they get damaged. They claim the frames flex for offroad travel because they only weld the aluminum framing on 2 sides. There is NOTHING special about FWC campers. They use the same materials as everyone else and are subject to the same problems. All of the FWC "fanboying" is mostly offroad people bragging about their rigs. If you have ever hung around the "wheeling" crowd you know what I am talking about. Everything is just a pissing contest with them.
