  • Does blending make your coloring look more realistic?
    Absolutely not!
Illustrator and art instructor, Amy Shulke shares her marker painting process for coloring a completely unblended and blotchy Aqua Chevron Christmas ornament with Copic Markers and Holbein Colored Pencils. For years, we've let beginner blending techniques define what's possible with alcohol markers. Let's move beyond basic blending combinations and finally color something that looks real.
If you've been using the same beginner blending technique for years and you're growing bored with coloring books and digital stamps, there's a world of artistry just waiting for you. Marker painting is a fine arts approach to coloring where we focus on shape and value instead of worrying about whether this marker blends with that marker. When we emphasize the form with correct values and accurate desaturation, realism happens automatically.
Note: This video is not a step by step tutorial. This is not a coloring lesson. Instead, Amy is sharing the thought process that goes into advanced level artistic coloring. The coloring supplies you already own have enormous potential when you stop obsessing over blends.

Why did I think that would be your next ornament to color? It’s cool watching it take shape and character. The final layer of peacock blue reminds you that it’s the color you started with on the bottom layer. Brings it right back to the top.

You're right about bringing the color back to the top, that's exactly why I did it. I do this a lot, it's like returning home after an adventure :)

I love the combination of red and aqua together so this photo was total catnip for me.

I like how the Chevron pattern and the colors you chose give the ornament an old, patina kind of look

That's exactly what I was going for. And the nice thing is that the old look isn't as demanding as a pristine ornament would require.

@@AmyShulke I like the old look. It’s no fun if everything looks too perfect!
