    I have the Ohuhu Marker Pad sketchbook (the spiral bound one) and the paper is almost white (barely gray) and very smooth. Yes, I do wish there could be more tooth like the Ohuhu Mixed Media sketchbook (which is my all-time favorite sketchbook) but for a sketchbook that doesn’t bleed with markers, I’m pretty happy. I’ve used Crescent Rendr in the past, but I was still pleased to see the Ohuhu not bleed through with multiple layers. I’m not naive, I was just impressed that it didn’t bleed at a lower price point than Rendr. I hardly used my Rendr sketchbooks because of the price, but with Ohuhu, I’m not precious with it. I’m not sponsored by Ohuhu, and the only things they’ve ever sent me were a set of 2 products they were developing that they wanted beta testers for. I don’t think I can even say what those were.
    Maybe I didn’t experience this because I mostly use Ohuhu markers on it? (I just saw you addressed this in the video.) I do have some Copics, but I don’t use them as often as the Ohuhus. Maybe they tested the Ohuhu paper with Ohuhu markers. Or maybe it’s because I don’t blend as much as you. I tend to “blend” by using dots or splotches to create texture.
    I DO agree with one thing. I can’t see the color of the marker I put down if I add a light color. It’s happened with other papers, too, but not often. I have to stop and let the paper dry often. That part is frustrating, I’ll admit. But that’s really the only issue I have with it besides the lack of tooth. It’s fun for a practice sketchbook.

    • @QueenofFlannelColors
      @QueenofFlannelColors 4 дня назад +5

      This. All of this. I have the smaller book, just because I tend to feel more confident working in a smaller space, and I haven’t had any “issues” with it.
      I think artists that primarily work in sketchbooks are rightfully giddy over this paper. It’s nice to be able to fill a sketchbook, and not feel like you’re wasting a chunk of your book. It’s designed for a different market and a different purpose than XPI and I don’t think that makes it bad persay.

      Yeah, I agree with everything you said. I don't like toothy paper. It uses more ink. That's why watercolor paper isn't recommended for markers.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  4 дня назад +2

      I think we agree on the Mixed Media sketchbook. It's by far the best Ohuhu makes and I would recommend it as a economy-grade sketchbook.
      I've tested the entire Honolulu set because I wanted to recommend it for my beginner students. You can see the results up until I quit in frustration here: markernovice.com/ohuhu-archive Someday, I'll need to wrap up that series of articles with a better ending. But if you think there's a team of Ohuhu scientists developing new marker technology and doing quality control, it couldn't be further from the truth.
      I also agree with your blending point. I'll be covering that more in Part 2, so hang tight. I just didn't want to make a 40+ minute video and broke the subject into two parts.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  4 дня назад

      Watercolor paper isn't generally recommended for marker beginners but quite a few of us old timers use it regularly and with great results. It depends upon the paper and your techniques but don't knock it until you've tried it.

      @@AmyShulke The Ohuhu markers do behave differently than Copic. Just like both Copic and Ohuhu behave differently than Windsor & Newton or any other brand. They all have their quirks, and sometimes those quirks even change depending on the paper. On top of the fact…we all have different styles and techniques.
      I have both Ohuhu and Copic. I use both for different things. I’ve had issues with both. Copic and I definitely have a love/hate relationship…looking at you Sketch caps. Thumbnail gave me pause and I just about tapped out at the beginning when you started with the RUclipsr Exasperated Sigh Into the Camera, but I stuck through and you do bring up some good points. I was also conscious of how thin the paper must be since it's at least 3 layers and overall page is quite thin. I'm glad to finally see someone show what the liquid resistant inner layer looks like. I was aware of the gray appearance of lighter colors until they dry specifically from review videos, so there are those that are showing that.
    I do believe there is something to be said about setting expectations. I would always consider this paper to have value as a sketchbook that allows you to get sketches on both sides of the page, increasing overall value. I don't think anyone should expect this to be the paper where they do highly rendered or commissioned artwork. I'm not sure all content creators are properly setting that expectation, especially when you consider how many of their viewers may be younger.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  3 дня назад

      I wasn't aware of a RUclipsr exasperated sigh. I roll my eyes a lot in real life so it seemed a natural way to sum up my feelings without saying anything. Given that I watch a lot of gardening, farming, and biz videos, I'm not seeing a lot of eyerolls, LOL.
      As for sketchbooks, I'm from the generation that considers them disposable. My sketchbooks are full of scribbles and idea dumps, totally not worth sharing with anyone. Heck, half my pages have to-do lists and reminders in the corners. But I think younger artists are creating sketchbooks as a final piece of art, something to be treasured and shared. That's an incredible amount of pressure on a young artist if they're assuming that every page should be a masterpiece of design, composition, and rendering skill. If that's the case, they're doomed to failure when they choose a paper this bad.

I'm super happy to hear that Canson has their own, I'll have to try that out next time I have more sketchbook money.

      I totally understand your point and I bought the full Ohuhu set fully intending to recommend them as a starter marker before students upgraded to Copic. Unfortunately, the inks they use are soooo bad and the Ohuhu numbering system has people wasting hours swatching... even then, the colors that look like they should blend on the chart don't blend as they should... I could go on and on about this but I'm not sure you'll hear me if you're truly sold on Ohuhu.
      Anyway, Ohuhu gives alcohol markers a bad name and you don't realize it yet because you're new. But I did purchase one of their sketchbooks once that ended up leaving that shiny residue. So I don't think the quality is consistent between them.
    I'm searching for reviews that you've done on them but can't find any! Would love to hear your opinion / tips!

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  5 дней назад +6

      I bought Rendr (Crescent) and The Wall (Canson) back when each first came out. Somehow lost the large Rendr pad when we moved house 2 years ago. For testing a few months ago, I bought a small Rendr 3x5 journal because I remember not loving it before.
      Of the two, I really liked The Wall and it blended much easier than Rendr. The one benefit to Rendr is that it's toothier and thus better with mixed media. But I have to confess that as a print/reproduction artist, the idea of coloring on both sides makes me shudder and so I'm definitely not the target audience for dual sided anything. This was pretty much the same conclusion I came to again in my paper livestream. ruclips.net/user/liveLvojq6W2ev0
      Both are MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the Ohuhu pad in today's video.
      Since I lost the older pad, I can't say I noticed a difference between current Rendr and classic Rendr.
      If you like Rendr, try Bristol. It's not dual sided but also won't give you the shiny residue. BTW, the shine is what happens when the paper fibers become over-saturated and can't hold more ink. Reduce the number of layers and you won't see a metallic glint or even the stickiness that happens when over-over-saturating.
      I just started the paper series so give me some time to work through my stash. I've got a ton of paper (as seen in the livestream) plus more still in moving boxes in the attic. Rendr and The Wall will both get covered eventually.

      I totally understand. It is scary to invest in art supplies; no matter what medium you choose, the real stuff is always expensive. I think because markers got trendy and because we're not able to mix colors on a palette, it's probably more expensive to start markers than other art forms.
      Just know, when something cheap fails, it's not you. I've seen so many students improve just by putting a better marker in their hand and by working on better paper. Same techniques, same skills, just better supplies-- it makes a world of difference.

    This comment isn't going to be completely on topic for the paper pad in the video, but as someone with a huge set of Ohuhu markers (the 200-and-however-many-it-is-I-don't-want-to-check set) who loves them, I wanted to thank you for giving your honest opinion on your website. As much as I love my markers, there are things that have bothered me about them for years, like the nonsensical names and the color-code system which you brought up in your review on the website. Recently I was really bothered when I saw a youtube video comparing Ohuhus to Copics that claimed Ohuhus were just as good as Copics for professional usage, without mentioning the fact that Ohuhus have abysmal lightfastness. Lightfastness is something that I don't worry about, as someone who uses my alcohol markers exclusively for fun, and I feel like it's an acceptable tradeoff for a lower price point, but it would be a massive issue for someone using them in professional avenues. Not mentioning it felt off.
    I'm also frustrated by the similarity of a good number of their colors. I went through once comparing swatches and testing colors, and counted all the markers I felt were close enough to another color that they were redundant, and I don't recall the number I came up with, but I was not happy about it. There shouldn't be five pinks that are nigh imperceptibly different in value. I've had some iffy feelings about the brand for a while now as prices rose, and the quality of some of their other products (specifically, some of their water markers, which is the only other supply they sell that I've tried) was less than quality.
    Your article made me realize, though, a lot that I've been missing. I've only ever used Ohuhus, never another brand of alcohol marker, but I had watched plenty of artists use Copics on youtube before I got my first set, and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with blending, and the colorless blender, and the like, because I wasn't getting the results and effects I felt like I should. Honestly, eventually I figured that it was a problem with the paper and I just wasn't able to figure out what kind of paper would work best, and then shrugged and learned to work around the issues (and I definitely adapted, finding a style and a process that works within the markers' limitations and lets me create pieces I love), but reading your article made the lightbulb turn on in my brain after however many years it's been.
    I don't totally agree that Ohuhus aren't worth spending any money on. The relative pricing means there was no way I would ever have been able to try alcohol markers if Ohuhus hadn't been around to try, and having the opportunity to work with even an inferior set made me fall totally in love with the medium that is now my favorite, hands down, so I can't regret the opportunity they gave me. In my opinion, a small set is good to try out the medium when you don't know whether or not you'll like it, enough to give someone a taste of what they can do. But if you really love alcohol markers, it seems like you should probably go for Copic. I wish I had the money to go out and buy some right now, because now that I'm aware of a little more of the differences I am very, very, very curious to try them out and see if the difference is as big as it sounds, but unfortunately I need things like food and gasoline that cut into my art-supply budget.
    I am apparently incapable of being concise but I will try to boil it down. Thank you for your honest review of the products, both the good and the bad. I appreciate it and I wish someone had really made the differences clear, sooner, so maybe I could have a few Copics by now, but ah well.

      This was great to read and I'm very glad you shared your experience and thoughts. I agree that we need a good entry-level set of markers for people to sample.
      Copic introduced the Ciao line to meet this need but then blew it on the pricing. Ciao were less expensive but still not an easy, affordable purchase. And I'm still looking for a marker brand that's easy to suggest to the fence sitters who are interested in markers but wisely hesitant.
      I would love to see a set of 24 versatile inexpensive colors that I could run a half dozen beginner classes with. Then if the student wanted to explore further, as each of the 24 dried out, they replaced it with a matching Copic. Seems like a simple dream but so far, no joy.

Your tutorials changed the way I color everything and why I kept purchasing my Copics... even just 1 at a time as I could afford them. I can't wait for part 2. I get a lot of flack for sending people to X-Press It paper...hobbyists tend to be cheapskates, not realizing they spend more money on fad junk than if they would have bought the good stuff the first time. Yes, it's expensive but also very forgiving if you make an oops. I bought this this product and had the same thoughts! What marker paper would you recommend for alcohol markers? I’ve used mixed media pads from canson and it bleeds a lot but blends pretty well. I’ve been thinking about getting Neenah card stock or strath more smooth Bristol, or maybe borden and Riley Paris paper? Mixed media is very absorbent but I want to conserve ink in my copics so I can save money.

    Ur not the only person in the world who hates this paper. I odered it a few days ago and I hated it too. The actual sheets are too thin, ink takes forever to dry. I used several different pigment liner brands on this paper, which I've been using with my alcohol markers on other papers multiple times. So, fineliners that are 100% alcohol marker proof. On this paper tho, they all smeared. I let them dry for 20 minutes and they still all smeared. I've never experienced anyting like it on my other marker papers. I returned it the other day. I'm just glad I ordered it from A-zon, not directly from Ohuhu.
    So, yeah. Never again. They had the chance to make a proper marker paper this time. Instead they released a bad Rendr knock-off.

    How do you keep copies from bleeding and why do they do that?

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  5 дней назад +4

      Bleed and bleed-through is actually not a marker problem-- it's a paper problem.
      Most papers are designed to withstand water and waterbased art supplies, so often alcohol isn't something they test during the product development phase. Alcohol behaves differently and will slide right past water barriers.
      So the trick to stopping alcohol marker bleed-through is to select either a thicker paper or a paper developed with alcohol resistant ingredients or coating.
      The trick to stopping "bleed" or "feathering" where ink spreads across the surface (not through to the backside) or seeps out beyond your line art is to choose better paper. In feathering, the fibers carry the ink outside your lines, so the solution is to use paper with fibers which don't allow the ink to travel.

    I truly feel like these brands like Ohuhu and Arteza are doing them self a disservice by sending out huge pr to everyone on RUclips. Is it fun for us to see new art materials, yes. But the value seem so much less when everyone gets a huge bag of markers and asked to do the same type of video. They all hit the same talking points and never question stuff, like the greyness in this paper. So if I search, just like you said, all the videos are made from the same group of people. If I wanted an opinion about FC polychromos I can find the whole spectrum (spectrum because color!) of pros and cons. I get that sending supplies to RUclipser is a fairly cheap marketing way but it makes someone like me very suspicious 🥸 also love the video and have subscribed ❤

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  4 дня назад +1

      I totally agree. The information on Ohuhu is incredibly one sided because of their intensive marketing campaign. They forced their product to trend and now that it's trendy, the people who rightly feel cheated and misled are reluctant to go against popular opinion.
      But then again, Ohuhu was a plastic company making camping equipment and housing for electronics before (out of the blue) getting into markers. I don't think they're in it long term, they're just riding the cheap art supply train until it runs out of steam.

      I have mainly come to the conclusion of. "If the person in the video is sponsored or got the product for free from the company. Their opinion is biased and should go in the garbage" looking at you Jazza.
      At this point I'm just gonna stick to the brands i know. I wanted to give Ohuhu a shot. But their marketing gives me a sus feeling. And some slight problems i have heard are the same as the cheap Action alcohol markers i own already and i do not have with Copic. Mainly the cap not matching the color that comes out of the marker. I have also concerns of the markers of the shades being inconsistent between batches. Since well my cheap alcohol markers have this problem. So that's either a good or bad thing no one has reported on this.
      Copic. I have two of the same shade bought years appart (i had a derp moment in the store despite having written down what colors i already have). And their colors are slightly different. But so are the marker caps. So this tells me Copic puts effort in matching the caps to the ink inside the best they can.
      Also i can't buy ohuhu stuff in an art store. So i can't just pick up w marker or two to try out.

  • @lucychan7938
    @lucychan7938 День назад

    To be honest, even Ohuhu is made in China, it's actually not popular among the Chinese art marker users. Copic is surely ranked the top among the Chinese marker artists but since the price is very high for them so many art students use other Chinese brands instead. Finecolour is the best local art marker brand among the local Chinese instead of Ohuhu. Ohuhu is really a over-hyped and heavily advertised Made in China product to me. And from your ohuhu test on your website, I somehow believe even some of the better Chinese marker brand like Finecolour and Croma behave better than Ohuhu though they are not comparable to copic. Moreover, in China it's easy to get these brands'refills in all colours around $1-1.5usd each but ohuhu cannot provide refills for each colours and sell them much more expensive than the local Chinese brands.

    • @AmyShulke
      @AmyShulke  День назад

      This is soooo interesting to read! It kinda confirms my suspicions... it feels like Ohuhu had an empty plastics plant and took advantage of a few US/China trade law holes... They figured they could make easy money here. Judging from all the Ohuhuites, they were totally right.
      If they ever intended to sell to the Chinese market, I don't think they would have invented the fake Hawaii story. That right there says they always intended to go after Americans.

      I can test Ohuhus on their paper but I think you're misguided in assuming that Ohuhu markers were developed by artists and formulated by chemists. Ohuhu was a plastics company making knockoff camping supplies and electronics before they spotted another plastic product they could easily reproduce. They don't innovate anything, they imitate using the cheapest possible ingredients and they do this from an unregulated part of the world. So I was very serious when I said I was giving them an advantage by testing their paper with blendable markers.

    I don't know. I bought the paper. I haven't tried it yet. First, the paper is cool toned. Personally, I would've swatched my colors. If you're using white paper techniques on cool toned paper, why would that work? As for the stickiness, Copics may not be for this paper. It may have been specially formulated for use with
    Ohuhu markers. Did you know Faber Castell pencils are specially made for their markers to use for sketching? The marker melts away the pencil, so erasing isn't necessary. Second, Copics are overrated and insanely too expensive. Ohuhu, while not perfect, is affordable. They also listen to their consumers. I'm sure this product will improve in time. I know it's much cheaper than Copic or Rendr paper. Neither of which I'm sublimely in love. Third, in most reviews of the paper, the artist used ohuhu markers. Just sayin.
