Look, I’m a massive Nintendo Fanboy, and I absolutely love the Super Mario series. But I will not tear apart a game because it is similar or takes inspiration from a Nintendo platformer. Any creator has the freedom to create whatever they want, and Team Asobi did an amazing job creating a solid platformer. I’d even argue it’s better than some 3D Mario games. I may prefer Nintendo, but I will always give praise to other games that deserve it. Astro Bot is one of those games deserving praise.
The main umbrage taken with this game, isn't that it "is similar". It's twofold. THE MAJORITY of its design traits, are blatantly derivative. And some bizarre, hypnotized mass of delusional commentators, like this one, are downplaying or denying, the soaring scale of the plagiarism.

18:36 I feel the need to point out that Team Asobi is made up of people from the now defu ct JAPAN Studio, who made Puppeteer (among many other excellent games), a PS3 exclusive which was basically a 10/10 2D take on the same formula that Princess Peach Showtime uses over a decade later.
I can see the Inspiration from Nintendo games in it like Mario, but I don't think it ripped them off. Then again, is Harman, the guy who thinks Warhammer 40k isn't Sci-fi while things like Metroid are (hint that's wrong there both Sci-fi).
"aschually" Warhammer 40k is dark fantasy in a scifi setting......but that's only a technicality......but like most 40k fans even I myself call it scifi regardless 😆

Yeah his whole channel downplays any quality console exclusive. Like I get that no software is truly worth buying hardware over but if that were always the case for everyone no one would upgrade their pc either.
Harman has made 4 videos on Astrobot, and the game came out 4 days ago. He has made a video on Astrobot every day since it has come out, and is claiming it is awful and failing despite the fact it has barely had time to do anything. The games that live rent free in his head always seem to expand, when anyone who isn't Nintendo gets a game with positive reception. Let's see we have Elden Ring, who has been there for 2 years, BG3 which has also become a forever resident there, Palworld, Black Myth Wokong, Space Marines 2 and the Warhammer community in general, and now the cute little robo boi is fitting in nicely there are well. I mean I bet minus Elden Ring (which he only played because Garaa called him out on it). He hasn't played a single one of those games. Also who was hyping up Knack? Even back then Game Journos were calling the game, medicore to awful. Not just Metacritic, Edge gave it 3/10, Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it 4.5/10, Eurogamer gave it 4/10, Gamerevolution gave it 2 out of 5, even IGN gave it 5.9 out of 10. Oh sure there were a few 6's and 7's and for some reason one 8.25 from Game Informer. But the vast majority were 3's to 5's. I took a few seconds to look up Knack reviews and saw this. I swear to god this 'man' is just the living embodiment of brain damage.
Us real and mature Nintendo fans don't claim him. I don't have a problem with Astro Bot. I think the robot looks extremely cute and NOT ALL GAMES have to be on Nintendo consoles. Let Playstation and Xbox have their own exclusive games.
Like, this isn't even the first game/franchise Sony made which was basically a love letter to it's hardware features. The Vita versions of Tearaway and Little Big Planet were doing their own extremely good iterations of the Astrobot concept with their own twists over a decade ago.
"It was the most obnoxious thing I've ever seen in my life..." Harman Smith obviously doesn't own any reflective surfaces whatsoever, and obviously is a 4-F vampire, because if neither of the above were true, he would have to confess that he, Harman Smith, was the most obnoxious thing ever in existence in the known universe.
It’s an amazing game, but it does feel like a greatest hits version of Nintendo’s recent releases. SMO, 3D World, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. It doesn’t feel unique in the least bit and the impact it has on the player is pretty muted if you’re not nostalgic for PlayStation’s history. That said, I greatly enjoyed it and it was the first game I’ve completed in over a year.
I don't think it's controversial to say that Sony dissected Super Mario Galaxy and onward to really understand how Nintendo built those games when developing Astrobot. You can clearly see how the developers mirrored so many details in the 3D Mario games to a tee, from the use of controls, game feel, and playability, to variety and even camera angles. But that's exactly what Sony should do. If you want to make a game that competes with the best games released in the last 15 years, you have to do things at least as well as they did. Every game takes inspiration from what came before, and I don't see this as any different. If anything, Nintendo should be flattered that their 3D platformer design was so good that it was worth mirroring closely without much deviation. The formula really works. Most 3D platformers outside of Mario (like Crash, A Hat in Time, Psychonauts, Yooka-Laylee, etc.) tried to feel different, and they just aren't as good. You may as well go with what works. It's not worth getting upset about.
Astrobot does not feel like a Mario game in movement at all. What makes astrobot feel really great is the dualsense. Astro movement is extremely limited he has three moves a jump, hover and punch thats it. there is no variability in how you tackle any of the platforming obstacles you cant even jump on top of an enemy. Theres no long jump, side jump, backflip, not even a wall slide in a 3D platformer of 2024. I genuinely think if it was played on a standard controller it wouldn't be perceived as being as great. The dualsense enhanced the experience dramatically. I really liked it but a game like Mario Odyssey I put like 70 hours into and Astrobot I put in like 12 got the platinum and i'm done. Which is okay.
@@DistinctionDino I don't have a ps5, so i can't play. I can only comment on how it looks. From my perspective, as someone who has played most 3d marios at least twice each, they really did dissect a lot of aspects. Not saying they copied at all, I know there is innovation and stuff, but I see so many gameplay elements and patterns and all sort of design that is borrowed heavily from the mario games, so that's why i say what i say. It's cool too, I think you have to do that to make a platformer. I think you need to reintroduce new concepts and ditch them quickly and have lots of novelty and variety. This formula really works. Even the silly things like putting collectables or how you position obstacles is like a science in mario games, and I see the same patterns being used in the trailers for astrobot. The influence is really obvious to me.
@@Katie-hb8iq i think maybe something was lost in translation because I agree it copies Mario in a lot of ways besides movement. Not just Mario either I see some Spyro in there too. There are some levels in the game that feel like complete rips. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is for the player to decide. For me it’s not great because it’s weird to constantly play a game and be reminded of another but hey. Where the game does shine is with the dualsense that feels great and really elevates the experience.
Even if Sony copied Mario, why are people mad Sony copied from the best? I hope Sony keeps coping Nintendo so we have more great games on other plataforms.
I love the fact he calls Astro Bot “Knack 2.0” when the first game Astro Bot appeared in called The Playroom for PS4 had released on the exact same day as the first Knack game back in 2013! Astro Bot has existed for 11 years but only became a big hit thanks to Astro’s Playroom on PS5 and now his first full game adventure, Astro Bot. Harman Smith needs to do more research and make actual good quality videos and then maybe people would take him more seriously
Honestly, 3D World actually is pretty distinct for a 3D Mario platformer, unless you count 3D Land. (Sadly, the 3DS got unpersoned by Nintendo, with a lot of the games not being ported over to the Switch. I guess they just can't justified their ridiculous 60 dollar price for a 3DS game.) >Jazzy upbeat music (As opposed to the tropical music of Sunshine or the orchestral music of Galaxy or the midi music of 64.) >Cat suits >Isometric view >You don't focus on collecting collectables, but rather get to the end of the stage like in the 2D Mario games Honestly, considering that every other mainline 3D Mario platformer is a collectathon, 3D World is 'unique' in that aspect. Though honestly, I still like it the least out of the mainline 3D Mario platformers. (Still a good, fun game, just nothing particularly special.) Also, I think 3D World is actually the most distinct Mario platformer during the WiiU era. At least compared to the New Super Mario Bros games, which honestly just feel like they're just 'Mario' and nothing else. 3D World actually has a bit more going for it than just that and has bit more of a style visually. As for other Mario platformers, the rest of the Mainline 3D Mario platformers offered something special. Mario 64 was the first successful 3D platformer, Sunshine was VERY experimental, Galaxy 1/2 did its own thing, Odyssey changed up the formula as well. 2D ones...Less so. Though honestly, that is because the 2D Mario platformer has been done so much that there is little room for innovation. (And, we literally have fan games, ROM hacks, and Mario Maker.) I mean, hell, even within the spin-off series, you get stuff like Super Paper Mario that play completely different from the first two games. Really, Harman is so obnoxiously fanboyish and simpy that honestly Nintendo would be WAY better off taking down his videos instead of fan games and mods. The guy is a brand liability at this point. (Not saying they should. Just if they are going to take down fan content, I'd rather it be Harman's ramblings than the amazing fan projects.) For me, I tend to separate the art from the artist (Or rather, the publisher in this case, since I don't really blame Nintendo's in-house studios for the anti-consumer decisions of Nintendo corporate.) unless the artist is specifically ripping me off or insulting me with their art. Sadly, the latter two are extremely common among gaming companies. (And, the former is true of Nintendo when it comes to pricing their re-releases, which is why I refuse to buy them.)

Deleted my last comment because for some reason my dumb brain thought Harmon said Sony sold Crash to Microsoft. Sony never owned Crash, Universal Interactive did and they were bought by Activision which was how Activision got to keep the ip.
Astro Bot didn't rip off Nintendo, most of the stuff here were inspired by Nintendo. Phase 1 of Space Bully Nebulax was inspired by Star Fox, the chicken is inspired by the Water Rocket from Mario Sunshine, the grass spawning thingy is inspired by the Cloud Power-Up from Mario Galaxy, the yawn and sleep was inspired by Mario 64, the punchers are inspired by Arms, and the grapple and swing mechanism is inspired by Galaxy 2. Some of the gimmicks here are inspired by Nintendo, not stolen from Nintendo.
He compared astro bot with knack, because knack was failure. In reality astro bot is more similar to mario galaxy than knack, and as we know mario galaxy series is one of the most creative platforms ever made, witch mean astro bot too.

Concord was far worse than Knack. I guess critics had higher standards back then, giving a mediocre game a horrible score.
Okay... Mario 3D World was the one with the cat everythings, and the double cherry... and it legit took me a moment to sus out which game it was as well. Sony had all the platformers back in the day. Nintendo had... bigger names, but Sony still got some pretty damn impressive entries. What does Harmon consider a 'platformer'? Because, in my mind? That's 2D Mario OR it's 3D collectathon stuff... he's lumping both of those into one group. If anyone is allowed to have grievances with Nintendo, it's Sony, seeing as Nintendo welching on their deal to work on a disc based add on to the SNES is the ENTIRE GODDAMN reason the Playstation exists in the first place.
Mario invented the 3D Collectathon with 64. If anything, 2D Mario kind of has been relegated to the 'New Super Mario Bros' spin off series, which explains why those games just felt...generic. Though, Wonder has definitely made 2D Mario platformers made by Nintendo interesting again. Of course, saying that other 3D Collectathons rip off Mario is like saying that every FPS rips off Doom. You don't claim ownership over an entire genre. And, you can take as much inspiration as you want from games. Like Hat in Time taking inspiration from Collectathons (Including 3D Mario) AND Wind Waker.

harmans problem, well, one of his problems is that he's jellous, any success for someone else, makes him feel lesser, and any company thats not nintendo succeding in some way harman will see as a threat to nintendo... so he will do these embarasing mental gymnastics to justify hating and attacking and down playing everything that any game dev or brand outside nintendo does becuase he cant admit when they get something right its all a dire threat to nintendo, so these other games MUST fail, in his mind everything must be lesser than nintendo just like everyone elses success hurts him... harman has an extordinarily toxic mindset not only for improving himself but for getting along with anyone, he basicly see everyone as an enemy... i cant think of a more lonely way to live, and the really sad thing is that theres no way for him to fix this becuase of his own pride, everyone else has to be wrong he has to be right, so he's just going to life the rest of his life like this... miserable bitter alone and angry blaiming everyone else for his failings... man that sucks....

And some bizarre, hypnotized mass of delusional commentators, like this one, are downplaying or denying, the soaring scale of the plagiarism.
...then you're not a fanboy. you're a fan.

I feel the need to point out that Team Asobi is made up of people from the now defu ct JAPAN Studio, who made Puppeteer (among many other excellent games), a PS3 exclusive which was basically a 10/10 2D take on the same formula that Princess Peach Showtime uses over a decade later.
I did not realize Astobot creators were associated with Puppeteer! No wonder it’s so good!!
I can see the Inspiration from Nintendo games in it like Mario, but I don't think it ripped them off. Then again, is Harman, the guy who thinks Warhammer 40k isn't Sci-fi while things like Metroid are (hint that's wrong there both Sci-fi).

13:00 Yeah they are, I remember Ryu can be found in the Retro Rumble stage in the first galaxy and Ken can be found in the Retro Rumble stage in the second galaxy, they are also needed for an achievement
No, you're not the only one who thinks a lot of Nintendo's games look the same.
And honestly, most of their games are not all that high quality, it's more or less staying about the same. No wonder why their games look mostly same.
12:58 - yes they are in the game. There’s even a trophy that involves Ryu and Ken in the Crash Site.
I must call your bluff on the Donkey Kong Country slander. Everything else in this video you're completely right about, but as a huge platformer fan, Tropical freeze is the greatest 2D platformer I've ever played.

The legend Harman Smith is back 💀🙏
The claw of the dragon? Or the fang of the dragon?
9:42 nah, it’s just the voices in his head were extra loud that day
Us real and mature Nintendo fans don't claim him. I don't have a problem with Astro Bot. I think the robot looks extremely cute and NOT ALL GAMES have to be on Nintendo consoles. Let Playstation and Xbox have their own exclusive games.
Thats the difference, most people are fans while he is a fan-boy. Fanboys of literally anything are always stupid.
Like, this isn't even the first game/franchise Sony made which was basically a love letter to it's hardware features.
The Vita versions of Tearaway and Little Big Planet were doing their own extremely good iterations of the Astrobot concept with their own twists over a decade ago.

Ironically PaRappa was never a platforming series of games, with not even one platforming game in it.
Yes Ryu and Ken are in Astro bot plus Sony never owned crash or spyro
Like every Tendie ever, his voice is sandpaper to the ears.
Oh I cannot wait for your PS5 Pro video. I assume later today
4:58 I hadn't even heard of Knack until the sequel came out
I don't think it's controversial to say that Sony dissected Super Mario Galaxy and onward to really understand how Nintendo built those games when developing Astrobot.
Mario Galaxy did what Ratchet and Clank already did years prior
I hope Sony keeps coping Nintendo so we have more great games on other plataforms.
harman, you are one of the few cases where the chaos gods DO NOT WANT YOU. i wonder what the imperium's uses for such fails.

Harman is already a Servitor for Nintendo. There's nothing the Imperium could do but give him the Emperor's Peace.
That armored warrior fight in the background is killing me G
Your sponsor placement was beautiful timing well done
Honestly, 3D World actually is pretty distinct for a 3D Mario platformer, unless you count 3D Land. (Sadly, the 3DS got unpersoned by Nintendo, with a lot of the games not being ported over to the Switch. I guess they just can't justified their ridiculous 60 dollar price for a 3DS game.)
>Jazzy upbeat music (As opposed to the tropical music of Sunshine or the orchestral music of Galaxy or the midi music of 64.)
>Cat suits
>Isometric view
>You don't focus on collecting collectables, but rather get to the end of the stage like in the 2D Mario games
Honestly, considering that every other mainline 3D Mario platformer is a collectathon, 3D World is 'unique' in that aspect.
