- Laura Ingalls Wilder, as portrayed here in the classic 1970s TV show "Little House on the Prairie", must have been the worst teacher ever. For commentary, see my blog at ejumacashun.blo....

She's better than most teachers I've had to deal with.
I never understood why Willie was STILL in the school when Laura was a teacher! He's been in that school since Laura herself was just a child! Weren't they only like, 2 years apart in age??? I know teachers started young 'back then' but Willie STILL being a student when Laura is a teacher just seemed weird. Same with Albert...wasn't he Laura's age?
The characters age ages could be vague sometimes. Willie came to finish school by the end of Season 9, but he should be of age or in his early 20's by then. And Albert made an appearance where he's still at school and is still a minor,ut he too should be of age.
i never knew the age difference between laura and willie was so big...
she was not such a bad teacher. you know at those times teachers could hit children but she doesnt. she just puts him in the corner. also when his mother came in she told him to sit, so she is good...and she was right to be angry cause nobody had studied...
She is the worst teacher ever. Prior to 1898, "New York City" only consisted of Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Furthermore, the East River is not a river, but a tidal strait.
Shame!!!!!!!!!
You can't blame her. I've had the same problem. I've seen teachers who're required to teach useless things and they struggle.
I taught US History, and I tried incorporating the history of New York City. It helped a bit.
And when an inspector, official, or parent shows up, say "we'll talk in private."
Remember, the teacher is the boss in the room, and must be seen on the same page as the administrators.
You can say that again. Nothing is wholesome anymore. :(
its from the 1970's show Little house in the prairie. Starring Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls Wilder. This episode shows how Laura had a problem and was replaced by Mrs. Olsen and how eventually Laura comes back when her students promise to behave.
God, she makes Miss "Let's send the children home in a raging blizzard" Beadle seem brilliant by comparison.
This episode takes place in the 1880's. NYC was not incorporated until 1898. Until then, it was the counties of New York, Kings, Queens, Richmond and the Bronx, not he burroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond and Bronx.
Laura couldn't assign pre-reading because there weren't copy machines, and you rarely see textbooks. Their supplies were a piece of chalk and a slate! Tough to teach both mixed-ability/mixed-grade level classrooms and not have proper supplies/materials. She did her best. Willie Nelson, is a privileged, no-SPOILED, and disrespectful. Laura's job was tough enough w/o his antics.
Asking kids information that they haven't learned yet is lame. That's not how you teach.
I love the part about 2:02. Where Laura gives a 'look' at Albert! Watch out Albert! Haha!
The kid's got a point- why WOULD you need to know the five parts of NYC? Wouldn't it be better to learn countries or states or something?
She's very impatient and doesn't make the information relatable for these isolated country kids.
since albert keeps laughing she should take him back to the city and drop him off so he can be an orphan again.
These are like my English classes. Only the kids have no idea what I'm asking them.
The problem was not Laura. The problem was Willie Oleson and his entitlement-minded mother.
I think It is called "Goodbye, Mrs. Wilder"........ In the episode, Mrs. Oleson temporarily teaches the class.
i knew that teacher...she was good---she kissed me in the corridor...i told my pop---he went to talk to her----she got fired...i cried coz i loved her
Bad teacher? Maybe because she expects those 19th century kids in MN to know the geography of NY with what seems like no previous exposure to the material... not because she disciplined a student. Wow. What a concept. Seems the poster has an ax to grind.
- A teacher.
The name of this episode is "Goodbye Mrs. Wilder".
The director (probably Michael Landon) had her act out a really bad day as a teacher, so she could have the conflict with Mrs Olesen and Mr Stoler - that's why she looks like a bad teacher at the moment.
she kinda has the right to be mad since the kids aren;t listening
I don't get what's wrong with this. Besides the fact that most kids don't behave like that, this is how every class all the way through the end of high school has been for me. Exactly this dumb. Isn't that what school is? An example of a good teacher is one that teaches you things you need to learn and teaches them well, in ways other than just enunciating them. And that's very rare...
its funny how willie and laura went to school together and now laura is willie's teacher!
WORST TEACHER ? WHY ? CAUSED SHE MADE THAT KID STAND IN THE CORNER, SHOULD'VE SLAPPED HIM SILLY
Ding Ding Ding...you would be correct. Laura is a great teacher.
"Why do we have to study New York, we'll probably never go there!"
I felt the same thing. My 4th grade teacher made us memorise the state capitals, most of which NOBODY ever visits.
Strange somehow, when they were Kids, Willie and Laura would address each other with their first names. Not it;s "Yes Ma'am!" I guess, Laura and Nellie Oleson are one age and Willie is a bit younger, but back then there was not much difference. Strange to see, that one of your school mates eventually becomes your teacher
Was there a girl called Fanny as well? Fancy calling a boy Willy. He deserves a good slap.
She was seventeen years old at the time.
duvteluv2, I couldn't agree with you more. Willie should have gotten hit with that ruler that Laura had in her hand! And in front of his mother!
Must be a bad teacher.. Willie used double negatives. "I didn't do nothin!"
Laura wasn't exactly my favorite character in the show...her eyes and eyebrows they always look angry and frustrated...like she's scowling at everybody all the time. lol
Oh no! She is disciplining a youth! She must be a horrible human being! (Sarcasm)
He had it coming. What a brat.
I think she was in a really bad mood during this episode, i doubt she always taught that way.
I don't think "worst teacher ever" fits here at all.
She was a very good teacher, she was just annoyed by Willie and his antics.
I don't think it's so much that the kids are lazy/stupid, it's that Laura is testing them on things that she hadn't taught them yet.
I loved this show back in the day, but this is pretty bad scriptwriting.
The name of this episode is "Goodbye Mrs. Wilder" from Season 7. Harriet Oleson decides the school needs more subjects. Laura quits. Harriet takes over. Harriet Oleson would be the "worst teacher ever" that the intellect who named this video would be referring to-not Laura Ingalls Wilder. Thank you.
she is a good teacher but you have to look at it from a different perpective. One) Laura isn't that old herslef, I think right now she is maybe 18-19 (considering she got married at 17) and thus she is still learning how to be a teacher (remember she just got her licence when she was 16 so she's only been teaching for a couple of years.) Two) Many of the students either know who Laura is on a personal level like her brother and sister, and Willy as well. This would cause trouble to occur.
i know right! that was so freakin' funny. albert was laughing a little too much though.
So why are we studying world history then? We won't ever go back in time...
That's the samething as to wy we study places that we probably would never go!!! DUH!!!
And she's not a bad teacher, Laura is my favorite girl out of the five.
Horrible teacher! She's mean.
Well if you watch this episode...you realize that Laura is supposed to be in a rotten mood and the kids are only pissing her off more, thus making her teaching style a bit dull and uninspiring. However, I do agree that the discipline was not near as extreme as it possibly be could have been to actually teach Willie a lesson.
Little House had had it by then. It went downhill as soon as they sidelined Melissa Sue Anderson. They sidelined the BEST actress hahaha. Michael Landon made a big mistake here, A couple of years later he had blew up the set in a hissy fit of rage after they canceled the show and shorlty after that he dies of cancer.
Worst teacher ever? Maybe. Worst show ever? Definitely.
the teacher is a bit pushy!! I don't see any issue with her putting the kid in the corner. Though I do think it's crazy that the woman and the Board of Ed guy would interrupt her class.
Does seem kind of pointless to learn about the Brooklyn Bridge when you're an 18th century pioneer out in the Midwest.
This is exactly the way a lot of ESL/EFL teachers teach -- today!
LOL that guy acts like Keegan...
She seems like a good teacher
I dont know if shes the worst teacher, that would have been a norm in that time
she needs a power point! lol
If you acually watch the episode Good bye Mrs. Wilder you will find that Laura wants to teach the kids sensable things like farming but the school board is against her mainly Mrs. Olson who runs everything Laura has to work with what she has and with Willie underminding her every step of the way and Mrs. Olsen pretty much letting him do it what do you expect have you acually watched the whole episode Mrs. Olsen is a way worse teacher then Laura. so don't be calling laura a bad teacher.
yup thats a pretty bad teacher
I totally LOVE this scene!!
no way is mrs wilder the meanest or worst ever
GODDAMNIT WILLY
@OfficialArmonist
there is no such thing as useless knowledge
You have to take into consideration that this isn't a REAL teacher. Get over it.
@JakSpringTooth nope thats not the worse punishment ever!! my grandma used to punish me by forcing me stand in front of a wall on one leg not using my hands to balance myself and stay there for about 2-4 hours
@yennster57
NYC is the financial capital of the world. Chances are that if you get a job in financing or banking, you will inevitably have to make a trip to NYC. If you go to NYC and the taxis know that you don't know your way around, they will usually dirve the longest route possible to screw you out of extra money. But if you know the location of the 5 boroughs and can read the GPS map in the taxi, you will be able to redirect the driver into taking the shorter, less car congested route.
What makes her a bad teacher here?
i didn't know she thaught spanish too "Burro" that's a donkey in spanish.
Willie was so naughty in this epispode. poor Hilda was trying to anseer.
I would have thought the priority for learning in the 19th Century to be mathematics and literacy, with the other subjects such as geography and history being only a small portion of the curriculum. I'm actually often surprised at the amount of civics lessons that were taught in these episodes. I always wonder how historically accurate it is.
haha that willy reminds me of a guy in my english class! looks exactly like him minus the curly hair!
he needed it
dit is oorspronkelijk een amerikaanse serie.
In case they ever want to leave Minnesota pfffhahaha!!! in case they could ever find their way OUT of minnesota, i get lost just thinking about it, and i'm from South Dakota!

Do you know why the Germans killed Jews? She was German decent. It's two separate incidents, same teacher and it wasn't just those things that made here the worst teacher there is more but those are the things that jump out at me.
How many episodes are there?
i agree.
It's Willie
Who is the girl that is sitting next to Hildy
And you, my argot cudgeling friend, are no doubt their target audience.
