Join me as we delve into Varna's communist past and discover how close Bulgaria was to the Sovient Union.
We meet Dimitar who has been driving a taxi in Varna for over fourty years, and shares his view on how things were compared to how they are now.
We climb 110 meters above sea level to visit the Bulgarian - Soviet Friendship Monument, giving us a vivid idea of what Bulgaria was once like.

Now I want to tell you something that not everyone knows.
1 Without the Bulgarian soldiers, Russia would not have been able to liberate Bulgaria, they suffered terrible losses.
2 When Bulgaria was liberated, Britain sent its navy to protect Turkey and said that if Bulgaria was formed on such a scale as a state, it would bomb Moscow. therefore, the territory liberated and inhabited by Bulgarians was left almost entirely in Turkish hands again. That is why there is a unification war a few years later. although quite vast territories remain in foreign possession again, where these Bulgarians are tortured by the local population, speaks not only of Turkey but in Serbia Romania and Greece.
3.I understand that you see a lot of the bad sides of Bulgaria while traveling. But keep in mind that after the end of World War I and World War 2, Bulgaria paid more reparations than Germany, which lost the war. After the liberation, we even paid the Russians for the help. And half of our gold reserves are still kept in England. This is a poor country, the last 100 years we have over 7 wars, starting with the liberation war, then the unification, the next day we are attacked by Serbia instigated by Austria, we have 1 inter-allied 2 inter-allied, 1 world and 2 world wars as for the last 50 years communism. But we have not always been like that, 30 years of the last century Bulgaria is the fastest growing country in the world, the lev is stronger than the dollar. It used to be like Switzerland on the Balkan Peninsula, many Germans came to work here. Bulgarian army was considered like a Prussian in the Balkans.

Found your channel by accident and somehow I can't stop watching your videos. I'm a 33 years old Bulgarian and I have never visited Varna in my life and it is really interesting for me seeing the city from your perspective. Have you considered checking other cities as Plovdiv, Sofia, Veliko Turnovo?

I enjoyed your Varna series, Justin. I always found the stories of everyday life during communist rule fascinating. We are so lucky now that we can take a plane to those destinations, like we would take a train, and we can immerse ourselves in an atmosphere that, before 1990, was surrounded with mystery.

That is some size when you get up close. Interesting vid thanks for posting. Only been to Sofia, which I loved but Varna looks like it’s going to be on my return journey to beautiful Bulgaria.
I was inside this monument in 2015 .There are terraces above the soldiers' heads.The whole hill below is a huge bunker, there was even a hospital below.Really something impressive.Unfortunately almost everything is already destroyed.

I am impressed to hear your russian skills. I know how hard it is for someone not speaking a slavic language as a mother tongue to develop a good command of a language from a completely another group...
If you thought that monument is impressive, well, try the one is nearby Shumen called The Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria erected in 1981, since the official foundation of Bulgaria in 681 AD. Highly recommended! The mosaics are very interesting as well.

@@J.E.E I am glad you liked all these giant structures, but these all are monuments of shame now. Russia once played it as a liberator but after 1945 (and even earlier though) it played it as an occupator. Recently there was a documentary movie about it. You can watch "Второто освобождение" on RUclips with English subtitles if you are interested to get yourself acknowledged how they occupied Bulgaria and no one even speaks about because generations of people were killed. So you will be more objective about these monuments if you speak about the other side of the Soviet Union in your videos. It's not about greatness and friendship anymore. This is why these are left abandoned.

Hey Justin! Next time you can go to the Retro Musium located in Grand mall, filled with a lot of items from Soviet times and it's really an interesting place to visit.
Great shot at the end! Have you been to other places in the country? Would you say they, unlike Varna have changed or?
Like many countries in the Region, most of the funding goes to the capital... I have zigzagged the entire country and I think that it is a pattern.

I have eaten at that Burger Van, great food and great service. Even better views of the beach and beyond.
Bulgaria was always on the crosspath between the countries. Even today we may belong to the EU, but alot of the peoples still have their simpathy to Russia. And one more thing! Bulgaria and Russia are bonded alot earlyer than 19th century. The christianity and cyrilic alphabet was brought to Russia from bulgarian priests in the end of the middle ages.

I honestly feel the sympathy towards the Russians when I am in Bulgaria and a major part is the history they share.
I plan on visiting the Cyrilic museum in Bulgaria and delve more into the history and how it is the foundation of orthodox Christianity.
I stated that the History dates back centuries, but focused in on the part that was relevant to the Amazing monument.

It took 7 months to construct the token of good will, and over 27,000 volunteers. 10,000 tons of concrete and 1,000 tons of armature iron were carted up the hillside, which was gifted 20,000 newly planted trees to accent the tribute. It was functional and cared for until 1989.
I missed that monument, TV tower in Tallinn has been really great moment. Downstairs is place with seats and so on. Just sit and think socialism.

In the times of tsar Simeon I, the first tsar in existence, Bulgaria's empire stretched far and wide, all the way up to where modern Ukraine lies.
During those times the Bulgarian empire spread the Cyrillic script to all Slavic tribes at the time, many of which were illiterate.
This was of course before most of today's Slavic nations were even formed, including today's Russia which was back then made up of smaller regions ruled by Khans.

In Varna nothing changed...you are funny guy! Boulevard on the canal - few hundred million euros. Shifting the port to the south for may be a billion. That's nothing too. New areas on that places for hundred of millions. Landslide reinforcement for millions… I didn't see you on those places!
Do a lot of Russians have property in Bulgaria compared to other foreigners?? Does Bulgaria have Methodist, Lutheran and Anglican churches? Thank you for this eye opening video.
As a person born and raised in Bulgaria, I wouldn't say that Russian people have properties in Bulgaria at all. Same as Bulgarians in Russia. Except if somebody hasn't relocated or got married in the other country, I don't think that they buy or inherit properties just like that.
One thing is being grateful for the liberation from the Ottomans and another thing are all the soviet monuments. I don't see why Bulgaria has to be grateful for to the soviet soldiers. Who did they liberate us from? We didn't declare war on the Soviet Union and didn't send soldiers to fight on the front. Nevertheless the Soviet Union invaded Bulgaria in 1944, placed an occupational army for a few years and then a puppet government for a few decades. Thank you for that, Soviet Union!
