      @@AnaaaaaaatttttI guess getting costume designers involved. That instead of a stylist buying pieces off a TikTok linked fast fashion shop. The archival pieces from the og were made, the printed baby tees were made to avoid copyright and be unique.
      To create something timeless you have to farm past trends and remix. Like how in the 60s there was a medieval revival. Or whenever an old silhouette gets popular again because fashion is cyclical.
      To make unattainable style you look at heightened looks like Japanese street fashion, look at the hubs of society that are experimental and artistic. Again, Farm ideas and curate new remixes of it by blending other historical pieces and current trends together. Thus it’s timeless because something unique was created instead of putting mass produced pieces on your actors.
      Doing the risky thing instead of the safe bet. If it’s not appreciated in current time people will respect the effort in retrospect.

      Your comment just makes me mourn what this film could've been all over again. When I read that the Plastics were specifically styled in cheap trash because "that's what the kids are wearing these days" and I realized that it wasn't even budget constraints that screwed them over, but because the person in charge of costuming didn't understand the assignment -- I'm disappointed all over again.

I just have trouble understanding because she is still feminine and also the actress is a lesbian who says she meant to portray her as a comphet lesbian, so if anything she's only meant to be attractive to lesbians and sapphics, not men in any sense of the word? Also where did they even state this?

      tbh, gretchen’s styling in this movie bothered me the most because her styling is literally no different from karen. i literally thought she was karen when i first saw the trailer, like the actual gretchen simply would not go out wearing an outfit where you can see her bra, not at all.

    • @adamsmoberly
      @adamsmoberly 5 месяцев назад +101

      @@hakaze6269 I thought the same thing too. She looked too cute and sweet like Karen in the photo used for the thumbnail on this video. Honestly, that actress should have been Cady, but they put the girl from the newest Spider-Man movies in as her, likely due to people knowing her. Which is sad, because I heard she can’t sing where as Gretchen’s actress can from what I heard (I’d wait till this comes to streaming to watch). I think Gretchen’s actress should have been Cady, Cady’s actress should have been Karen (not only does she looks like she could be Amanda’s cousin with her big doe eyes, but I think she could play Karen well), and put Karen’s actress as Gretchen (who I think could play her really well). And I think they should have done with the costume designer of Jawbreaker did and had the girls dress in vintage clothing from thrift shops. But I heard the costume designer wanted the kids to look “normal and not like Euphoria threw up on them”, which Mary Jane Fort (the original film’s costume designer) actually had clothing that wasn’t high end sprinkled in, it was just paired better. Honestly sad the new costume designer didn’t think of putting the new girls in outfits that made sense and kept his own agenda that basically ruined the film’s costuming.

    I saw that the wardrobe department said that they bought a lot of stuff from tiktok and instagram because "that's what the kids do these days" which is just so stupid. I think they should have had the plastics dressed in luxary brands, elevated above all the other kids and had Cady, after joining them, wearing the obviously cheaper versions. I think that would have added to the story because obviously Cady can't keep up with them financially but if she was wearing similar but obviously cheaper versions it could add that layer without having to come outright and say it.
    I mean the whole element to the Mean Girls story is Cady "learning" what it means to be a girl and ultimately how damaging it is for everyone in that structure to be told what you are and how to be. She's the audiences eyes into this story, to the challenges and politics of being a teenage girl and how cruel and difficult it can be. I think they had such an opportunity to speak to the challenges of what young girls go through these days, especially with the influence of social media. Their budget for the 2004 movie was $18 million. Using the Bureau of Labor Statistics to calculate for inflation, their budget back then would have had the same buying power as $30 million now. I’m in between gen z and millennial, and I think it’s hilarious that gen z think trends they wear are actually going to be representative of the generation in the future. The trends we see with Y2K fashion is either stand out fashion (ie NOT average everyday wear) or worn so much by everyone over a long period of time that it ingrained into our brains. I remember patchwork Bermuda shorts being everywhere but it’s not a trend now because it was a flash in the pan of my specific demographic…teens weren’t wearing heels to school en masse. They didn’t wear micro skirts and baby tees everyday either. They basically dressed like Bella from twilight and Scott McCall from teen wolf from 02-12. You should not be able to find queen bee Regina George’s outfits easily. Extremely common eventually becomes staple. Unobtainable is memorable. Even having everything she owns be actually thrifted at a fancy shop would be better than this.

    I will say as a costume designer - a lot of our work gets limited by 1. Production costs, 2. Production timeline, 3. Creative input by directors/producers/people more powerful than us. I checked Wikipedia and principal photography literally took one month. March - April 2023. That’s like… no time. The costume designer (who is awarded) is a white guy who’s career highlights are SNL and 30 Rock. I’m not surprised that we ended up with the cheap Shein / Walmart type costumes between Tina Fey going with a costume designer she likes, not one who would suit the aesthetic of the movie, the short filming period, and the big corporation sponsorships like Walmart influencing the costumes.
    (My 2 cents)
    (I’ve costumed plays that looked more expensive on a significantly, exponentially cheaper budget lol)
    (Production costs + production timeline are big reasons why the new Lord of the Rings show costumes looked so bad! Directors/producers/studios keep asking costume designers to create wardrobes with very short turnaround to reduce costs)

    I agree completely. Everything in the movie felt...budgeted. The plastics should've gone for the Y2K resurgence vibe with mini skirts, baby tees, and they could've each had an individualized aesthetic within this. Everything they wore looked like it was from a cheap fast-fashion brand and it did not look 'put together' imo. And I really wish they gave Janis that alt-gothic style with a lot vintage pieces and old band tees. Of course I don't expect it to be exactly like the original, but it felt lacking in authenticity.

    I always got the impression too that Gretchen had more moeny than regina, like her designer was more "old money" design (i.e. burberry) over Regina's Juicy Couture... like she was richer, more preppy, more put together, and could have been the "Regina" if she was confident. Which you see at the end when she does sort of become the queen bee.

I went on Cider to see how much of the clothing pieces they used for the costuming were from there and I saw the knitted top Janis wore for her I'd Rather Be Me musical number, and WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. The styling for that knitted top that they showed on the site literally screams more Janis than the styling they did in the movie. Couldn't they have just followed the one on the site!? This is how I realize they really didn't give a fuck about making this movie remotely remarkable.

    0:17 this. Is. What. I’ve. Been. Saying. Literally in an interview they said they took inspo from the fact that teens these days wear “pajamas” and clothes from various fast fashion outlets💀. While a lot of people do wear fast fashion like SHEIN they didn’t take into account the many aesthetics associated with todays teens. As a teen from today I was so disappointed to see all the weird patterns and clunky costuming a and lack luster copying of y2k, grunge, alternative, or street wear inspirations that I see in school etc. We combine styles to fit how we want to present, and they rly just went with ill fitting stuff that was so weird. I think the movie Bottoms does a good job showing this variety, it’s rly worth checking out even if for the fits alone. But yea this movie was uper icky. 😕🙏🏾

    It's amazing that 2000s clothing is considered "good quality" now. When I was a teenager in the 2000s, I learned how to sew and got into thrifting because the stuff that was available was awful! The cuts were terrible-- no curves whatsoever. At 115 lbs, I felt "fat" trying to wear 2000s fashions, but beautiful wearing clothes from the 1950s-1980s! To this day, I low key hate 2000s clothes because of the whole eating disorder aspect (they don't look good on healthy, normal curves like a 115 lb teenager would have). My favorite era actually ended up being the 1910s once I got really into buying old patterns-- 1910s sewing patterns consistently fit me with zero alterations, and at first I didn't know why. Then I watched a video about fashion history, and it turns out the ideal that decade was a 10 inch difference between the bust and waist-- which is what I naturally have when I'm healthy! IDK how I ended up with the 1910s shape even without a corset, but to this day, I HATE the straight seams that made shirts in the 2000s either pull in the bust area or hang so loose in the waist area that I looked fat! And I hate the low-rise jeans even more-- I didn't want to have plumber's crack, and I didn't want to see anyone else's crack. So yeah-- very, very weird to have 2000s stuff considered "high-quality vintage" when that term was reserved for stuff like couture 1960s finds when I was a teenager!
    I'll also say that for some reason, the fashions I hated most were roughly from 2000-2007. Around 2008, there were skinny jeans that were more fitted and covered the ass crack better lol. I followed *some* trends between 2008 and 2019, but a lot of the stuff I made still kept pulling from 1890-1990 because it's more timeless.

      We get it, you sew and you're so much better than others because you dress in "true vintage" cuts that fit a 'curvy shape', modern fashion sucks, so on, so forth. We all knew a girl like you. Ones that rued the modern trends, materials and cuts, and typed up long paragraphs on their own vintage 'old styles were so much better (bonus if something about compliments from men is added in as well)' journey. You know. The more hyperspecialised fanatics of the 'timeless and classic' church... when nobody bloody asked.

    • @miaferrari958
      @miaferrari958 5 месяцев назад +20

      Early 2000's clothes *were* good quality. Just because they didn't fit your body type, it doesn't mean that the quality was bad.
      The denim was indestructible, most t-shirts were 100% cotton, and even plastic leather would last you for years without peeling.
      I used to buy the cheapest clothes available and I would throw them away when I literally got tired of wearing them. Nowadays clothes seem to disintegrate.
      To this day I buy late '90's/early 2000's pieces of clothing whenever I get the chance (especially jeans).

    It's unfortunate to have to bring it up, and I absolutely do not intend to body shame Rapp, but I think her figure did play a role in the poor fashion choices. I think the movie's costume designers just didn't know how to dress her. As meh as everyone's outfit is in this, at least the others have clothes that fit right. Rapp's clothing are oddly baggy because they weren't tailored to her measurements, and it just feels like the designers panicked and threw as many high-waist pants straight off the rack at her because they read somewhere that it was "slimming". They did her dirty :(

    for the shoes although heels would be great, imo they could go for some stylish chunky shoes. I feel like the mini skirt/big sneakers combo or smth like leg warmers/big loafers would look nice. Maybe some platform with flared jeans if they want more pants? It's still pretty popular (at least from what I've seen) and it can be an ode to the feel of y2k without actually dating the film. They should really take notes from Do Revenge costuming tbh

    Ugh, I'm so glad someone addressed the infuriating fashion. I'm in my early 30s, always been into alt fashion, and actually try to avoid trends (like, if I see something I like is trendy, I'll wait until it's out of trend to wear it), but when I saw the fashion in this movie, I was like, "Ewie, it's so out of touch it's embarrassing". The girls look like cheap fashion dolls. And, if the young actresses were able to have input, they should have informed the stylist that these clothes are neither suited to their characters... Nor attractive at all. Of course, Janice was my favorite character with my favorite fashion when I was younger. This Janice is so basic, but ironically manages to be more trendy than the Plastics. It's such a mess.

    I think the reason for the bad clothing designs was due to the fact the film, I think was going to be a streaming film before being dumped into theaters in January (which is bad, because that’s when crap is thrown into theaters). And the Shein comparison isn’t off the mark, because I think the outfits were by Cider, which is very similar to Shein. I think Modern Gurlz talked about it more in their review. I mean the original film had cheaper clothing too, but a lot of it was also custom to the film. And honestly, it’s irksome, because the only characters who had good style are Janis and Damian…like that insane.

    What makes me even more upset about this, is that the Broadway musical already updated the outfits amazingly, they had probably the most costume changes I've ever seen in a show, and things were a little exaggerated (it's Broadway) but honestly still looks great, and all the characters fit, but still feel unique.
    I especially love janis, they go less goth, but it is very alternative, and they pull more on her artistic side, having a lot of it be painted on, and it's really cool, and fits the character, while adding something new.

    But to be honest I don’t think Regina had the worst outfits. For me it’s Gretchen. I think Regina was the most fashion forward decisive obvious it girl of the group back in the day but Gretchen was my favourite for her style but that’s because my taste skews preppy.
