That is why, I don’t understand how some people might conclude that the trend cycle is moving too fast, when people in real life are still wearing the same things they wore a few years ago. Only people from the internet have moved on with these trends.
you are actually so right but i think as more young people are spending time online, these online trends will probably become real life trends faster, people my age are going to be the last generations that led any part of their lives without social media
this! for exemple i still see middle schoolers wearing skinny jeans but on internet everyone makes it sound like they bully ppl who still do or whatever mosg of them just wear super basic sweaters and sneakers as well thats been there for years
@@moonchild6352 I too see a lot of teenagers wesr skinny jeans but I also read few comment on an artikle were 13-14 yo say that their mom makes them wear them. So sone of them cannot really descide on their own. But I also know lots of 20- years olds who wear skinny jeans willingly.
@@ines4242i can confirm that im a teenager and when i was in middle school i wore skinny jeans every day just because i didnt know other pants existed or at least didnt know how to wear them also they were the only pants my parents gave me besides leggings since i was a kid
Sometimes I worry about not being fashionable enough but then I realize that 90% of the people I see in real life are just wearing jeans/leggings and a shirt or sweater. If you spend too much online it can make you feel like everyone is super trendy and cool when most people are just dressing simply and comfortably. I still follow online trends but I’ve started to just wear whatever I want rather than worry about if my outfit is Pinterest/instagram worthy.
Must be so nice, I live in the Berlin city center and on my way to and from work I always see people who are insanely stylish and I feel so boring even though I too am a stylish girly but I don't feel like dressing up for work obviously. It's like this "please I'm a star" clip lmao
Many people don't care about fashion but you can be both comfortable and stylish, it's just better (and more fun) to cultivate your own style than to chase trends. Your clothes should make you feel good.
this is so true, I tend to follow the online trends (not chronically, but I usually like what I see the most of) but then I go out and looking like a "weirdo" because nobody is wearing these trends irl, or just very few people😅 it's a strange time we are living.
i'm the exact same way i like following online trends too and when i go out i look insane compared to everyone else lol i don't mind because im still confident but its so interesting how different things are
Yes I feel the exact same way! And then I’ll dress in something that feels super plain and dated and get a ton of compliments and I’m like, what even is fashion haha
Yes!!!! This used to be me. And THEN I moved to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere where everyone is literally 10 years + behind. If you wear stuff that's outdated by a few years everyone will ask if you're from out of town haha. I used to think that I was expressing myself through my clothing but now I feel like I actually am- because I feel like I have the freedom to not follow trends at all and I wear things that I still like that are like 7 years old. No one's tastes change as quickly as the internet in real life. If you really like something you'll probably like it for years or forever. I loved peplums in 2011 but stopped wearing them when they went out. In 2020 I pulled out a peplum and started wearing it again. I styled it different but I love wearing them idc... Now they're back though so that's fun. But yeah I got compliments on my peplum lmaooo
@@khadyadjisall5708 girl that's is the whole point. You are missing the point. Literally places like Paris and Milan are the ONLY places where people dress like that. Those places are in the tiny minority, 99% of the world doesn't dress like them
as someone who lives in the nyc metro area, i definitely notice the "online" trends are never out in person in my town or near it, but when i'm in certain parts of the city, it's everywhere!
same i notice it more when i go to dc as opposed to my town, i've also noticed that the people who i see dressing more trendy are people around my age or younger which also makes sense bc older people are probably too busy having babies and buying houses lol
This is the same here in Berlin. At my University I see a lot of people wearing more „online“ trends, but in my hometown I see less people. I saw a lot of fur coats last year for example
@@E42545 yeah Brooklyn and Manhattan definitely are more up to speed on the online trends but that makes sense bc they are the bigger fashion/culture boroughs. I think native New Yorkers also have their own trending personal style. For example, in the winter, moose knuckle and Canada goose coats with the fur lining and all black everything are super popular in Brooklyn, the Bronx and queens especially.
i love that you mentioned being able to tell someone is online when you see these trends in real life. i don’t think some people realize how obviously curated and influenced their style is rather than it being natural and genuine to them. it’s like seeing someone wear a 2023 titkoker cosplay.
@@Renf-sk5li I saw someone who modeled their entire wardrobe and personality after the dark academia aesthetic. It was EXTRAORDINARLY jarring, because every single item they owned worked to curate this aesthetic. From their pencils, to their airpods case, to their belts; Nothing felt natural, because it wasn't.
There are definitely regional trends and they may not reflect what is popular online or in a different part of the country. I love looking for things that are popular in different areas when I travel. And I agree with your utility belt bag prediction. Cute and practical!
completely agree in a lot of non western countries some online trends may be considered too immodest or just too flashy to go out in, when i went to Nigeria last month i literally looked like a crazy person and got stared at a lot lol 💀🥲 trends were like the last thing on their mind 😭
It’s so weird to see new trends pop up so often- like clean girl & the new mob wife aesthetic trend- just a few years ago aesthetics appeared and stuck around for a while. Indie & soft girl aesthetics were so major even though they’ve faded, people still draw from them. Me personally I tend to still style myself from what was trendy in 2017/2019 from what I liked, and occasionally take inspiration from newer trends but I never throw out my entire closet to start a new aesthetic. The trend cycle now, online anyways, is so fast people aren’t even developing their own styles they’re just picking up trends and throwing them away when they’re “out of style”.
@@FoundSheep-AN I still wear high rise, even though low rise has come back into style, & the mid-2010’s very 80’s/90’s focused, while now y2k is the main inspiration for a lot of people, so I tend to still draw from 90’s trends rather than the newer stuff. I don’t know how to really describe it but there hasn’t been a huge shift for me personally in what I try to dress like. Maybe it’s because I know what I like so I’m not searching for entire new aesthetics to try.
@@FoundSheep-AN As someone who was born in 95 and have seen all the styles that are being trendy now, being in trend the first time, and fashion is a very personalise thing. Something that is trendy now, doesn´t mean that it will look flattering on you. For example, the mob wife aesthetic. I live in Vienna, Austria, a city that is more known for culture and history than fashion. I´ve seen girls trying to dress like a mob wife, and it unfortunately looks very unflattering. However, there are people who look great in this aesthetic and also look very classy ergo rich Russian women. In Vienna, they love to go shopping in downtown. And they look fantastic in fur, because they style it right and their makeup doesn't look cheap, even though it is also full glam. Just because something is in trend, doesn't mean it is for you. Fashion is very personalised and if you know what kind of style and cuts suits you, you know what current trend is for you.
i found the tumblr grunge and soft girl styles when i was 12 and i’ve just played those up or down over time lol depending on if i wanna be cute or edgy
@@user-dc2dj6sc5h Oddly, covid hit the fashion magazine badly. Before, the mags were thick. The "bibles", the March and Sept. Issues, especially Sept. were HUGE. No more. And a couple have gone to a smaller formats, which is diappointing.
i go to a school that's known for being "artistic" and everyone having very unique style, which is true when compared to the world outside our school, but looking at the people in school... everyone there prides themselves on being individual while also lookin like every other person there. like, sure, if you go to your local grocery store at home you do stick out from the crowd, but that's only because you, like every other student here, chose to wear the online trend lol
I went to uni to study design and can totally relate. Everyone wore the same stuff back then. But they prided themselves in being so unique and individualistic
Omg as a poc artist I try to avoid going to white artist people spaces cause everyone is like this and on top of that they’re almost always so pretentious
Fitting in will always be a "thing". And fashion is always the most obvious way to do it. Rightly or wrongly, clothing is ARMOR. And the "right" clothing can give you confidence. Who couldn't use more of that ??? You only have 2 real choices here. To blend in, or stand out. And THAT will vary from place to place. It always depends on your comfort level. And what you want your clothes to say about you.Though it problably SHOULD depend more on what makes YOU look good. The fact is, it's the rare person who looks good in EVERYTHING. And babe, isn't looking good the whole point ???
I live in Australia, when I went to Japan even the average 75yo man there dresses way better then the average person here, their fashion is crazy good.
i dont think its neccessarily a trendy thing, their popular clothes are just generally a certain aesthetic, neutral, minimalist and quality material so it always looks quite good.
Flared/bootcut jeans have taken the hell off irl here; they've been in every fast fashion retailer for over a year already. I don't live in a particularly fashionable city, but i work in a charity thrift shop near my university, so i see a *lot* of these online trends in the people coming in. Cropped fur jackets, baggy darkwash jeans, military style caps and cargo bags, you name it!
@@chisom. Yes!! flared dark blue jeans and black hi-tops with a double layered sweater (the kind with the pretend vest underneath?) - a uni student fave it has to be said
I walked into a Plato’s closet for like the first time in yearssssss and it was insane to see how much of the stuff was just from 1-2 years ago, trends that I only saw online
@@chisom.100% agree I took my teenage cousins back to school shopping in august and the majority of what they selected was basic tank tops, flared jeans in like every wash, cargos and both cropped and oversized hoodies!
In person youre more likely to see store bought stuff from like malls or local shops. While online its more likely youll see stuff from an internet shop
I live in Oregon and every day I pick up my daughter at the highschool, the kids are wearing pajama pants or sweatpants, Ugg slippers and Birkenstocks or Crocs with Nike socks. I'm not sure why they always wear Nike socks in particular but that's the staple teenage outfit.
When I was in high school guys liked wearing white athletic socks with black Nike slide sandals. My GRANDFATHER made fun of them for dressing older than him
Influencers tend to move through clothes quicker as they get gifted items and also buy items to make content. The rest of us are out here rewearing what we purchased years ago.
this is what i think a lot of teen movies and shows get wrong with the costumes, they also try and dress them in online trendy fashion but in reality thats just not what teens actually would be wearing especially in smaller towns, as someone who was in high school only a few years ago I remember the popular and rich kids especially did not dress with the online trends
@@ally_washereyou don’t need more child labor you just need competent directors/costume designers. It’s been done right before, it’s just most directors don’t really care about the accuracy of their teenage characters
Definitely. Not to mention how quickly online trends change, it’s easy for something that was trendy one minute to become “outdated” the next. Considering how movies take quite a long time to produce, I’ve seen so many movies where they’ve tried to dress their characters as trendy stylish as possible but when the movies actually out, everyone’s already moved on to the next big thing and the style isn’t quite as appealing as it could’ve been earlier.
so so important! but also I feel like the real life trends are simply what the internet perceives as outdated, more like the 2016-2019 kind of style - which is interesting as trends now move too fast to even be adapted gradually into real life, so will the majority of the population simply keep dressing like 2016 forever or will the current trends turn into real life ones in a few years all at once?
good thought! honestly idk especially with tiktok now there is literally always something that's why i just think people should wear what they like and leave the rest
yeah maybe trends will become less prevalent in real life over time, like we’ll have a mix of lots of different styles because of every individual’s exposure to fashion
As someone who lives in europe, I would say that most of these online trends hold true for real life here, while the "real life" trends you're mentioning, is definitely only trendy in the US
i think it just takes some time for trends to tickle down to the irl now. maybe bc online is just such a rush for content and you constantly need sth new bc the post/video/photo from yesterday is still there and ppl feel the need to constantly produce new content while irl you just wear what you have and what's available in shops. most people don't get on the trend right away, they don't want to be the odd one out or they don't pay that much attention until the thing is everywhere
I know several people, myself included, who are just too short for this wide leg pant mess, and lived through the years of walking on the back of their pants and having them soak up a ton of water when it rains. There's a solid amount of millenials and gen x who are just not about that life.
i feel like this just comes down to trends filtering into the mainstream. social media has just become a place where newer, more 'fashion forward' ideas brew within a smaller niche, until it becomes more popular among the mainstream users and gets picked up by mainstream fashion brands, until it filters into the general population. this is probably why the masses tend to wear things that you mind think were trendy 3 years ago! rlly interesting video - you gained a subscriber x
I think you’re right about “irl fashion” being a couple years behind what’s on TikTok, Pinterest etc. The weird thing to me is, if it’s true that the trend cycle irl isn’t moving as fast as we think, then who is buying all this fast fashion super quickly? I mostly hang out in alt fashion spaces in person and online tho so I have to rely on videos like this to know what’s “mainstream”. Though I’m not sure mainstream fashion truly exists anymore. We’ve all divided ourselves into these spliced categories based on aesthetics or practical needs rather than only what celebrities wear, etc 🤷♀️
When trends are new, they are only available in high price brands. It's when there starts to cheaper dupes available, I can finally participate. By then, the trendy girls have already moved into the next thing.
I'm glad somebody talks about internet vs real life trends, in real life I can see a few people who seem to follow online trends but online I see so many different aesthetics
Love this video! I def think people who don't have a ton of disposable income are going to use "trendy" items past their peak popularity so real life is going to reflect a blend of trends from the past four years (at least) rather than just this month. Like even if I thrifted an on-trend jacket in 2019 I just.. have it now? So I'm not going out of my way to buy another jacket
completely agree most people aren't going to discard perfectly good clothes because they aren't "on trend" also most people we see online they're job is basically to be trendy so they're gonna take it more seriously and they also get sent clothes, people in real life likely have more important things to allocate they're money towards, i think that's also why younger people tend to dress more trendy as they have less financial responsibilities and can spend more on clothes.
@chisom. Another factor is that as I'm getting a little older, I care a lot about looking nice and I prefer quality clothing and statement pieces. I don't really like to be bogged down with *stuff* either so I'd rather have less clothes anyways. Don't get me wrong I'm not buying designer but I'm looking at how a garment looks on me, the material, and how it flatters my body instead of just what is trending. Honestly the difference between Shein and a really good thrift find is night and day (not knocking Shein here ik it's all some people can afford or they like how it looks)
I live in Wrocław (Poland) near three big universities in the city, so I see a lot of online trends in person every day I go to work 😊 I rarely see lighter jeans with holes or skinny jeans. I think a lot of people here know that straight or flared jeans just suits them better. Right now we have temp around 0-8° C so I see more and more fluffy "mob wife" coats, but it will be gone with spring.
Yesssss!! I often think about this topic when people online, specifically influencers, are constantly switching up their style to always be on top of the trend cycle. But then again, they're influencers and I have to remind myself that it's literally their job to show us what's new all the time. I bet a lot of them hardly rewear outfits because of the amount of clothing they have. That mindset is not practical in the real world because everyone re-wears their clothes constantly. It's all definitely interesting to think about.
Can I just say, i LOVE that most of your example clips are of Black girls/women. U don't really see that when ppl do style breakdown videos so THANK U!!!
i go to school in LA, and i def see a majority of the "irl trends" dominating like, the normie pretty girl culture. but then there are quite a few "online fashion" girlies walking around on the daily. sacramento has a surprising amount of online trends walking about too--but i notice the sac youths seems to have an attraction to alternative/darker/grungier vibes more-so these days-- honestly, i live for it.
Another thing regarding location is... I live in Texas. I absolutely love the Penny Lane coats and I've wanted one for at least 2 winters now... But it gets cold enough to wear those for like a week here, and I cannot justify spending $200+ on a jacket that I'll wear like once a year (but every time I see it in my closet it will make me smile). Yeah, I'll stick with the one I got from H&M like 5 years ago for $30. If I lived somewhere cold I'd buy one in a heartbeat though... Point being: relevant trends will catch on quicker where its location appropriate.
I think this vid also meshes well with tourism and expectations of famously known areas due to “fashion and trends”. As someone who lives in LA the stuff you mentioned you would see irl is pretty accurate to what people wear here and it’s kinda funny how you can spot the tourist or chronically online person so easily bc 90% of LA does not dress like it’s fashion week or like all those current trends. It is rly only seen in the Fairfax/Rodeo hipster trendy rich areas that people dress like that but for online trends that can be seen in person are mostly baggy jeans and jorts.
i go to a high school in california and i almost never see any current online trends as soon as they come out. what’s popular over at my high school are claw clips, short, high rise jean shorts, and more intricate blouses/tank tops. i’ve seen a lot of low rise boot cut jeans, too.
i love looking at online trends and hand-picking things I like so i stand out in school, but they all have a coherent theme (because I chose them) so i dont look like a weirdo lol
Personally I live in Europe (Amsterdam), and I do see a lot more of the online trends in person. maybe Europeans dedicate more to fashion than Americans. Could also just be the city! Very interesting topic. All the clothing stores in Amsterdam are also filled with leopard print coats right now 🥰
i completely agree i feel americans don't care about fashion at all and ill get complimented on my style here even if im dressed very basic lol. Thank you for watching im so glad you liked it :)
I think it's specific to cities and countries in Europe. I live in Paris and literally NO ONE wears the online trends. I used to visit Milan a lot and people dress very close to the french (although they probably hate to hear that), so also no online trends. A little more in Germany maybe? Maybe Poland a little bit? In my opinion Nordics are also more into online fashion, but on the continent of Europe in general I feel the vast majority doesn't care at all. The local esthetic mostly wins
I highly agree with your points, also what's on the street highly depends on what country you live in. For example I personally don't think Mob Wife and skinny bottoms are gonna turn into a mainstream trend until Winter 24-25 if it even survives even in the big cities that are fashion oriented.
What’s interesting about this is that I see both living in NYC. I wear more online-like clothing and my peers and the people I see around the city are also dressing similarly. However, I also see the in person trends just not on “fashion-forward” people.
I agree with this so much! I'm in my first year of college, and no one wears all the extreme trends that social media displays; most girls are still wearing leggings, jeans, or yoga pants with sweatshirts or teeshirts, or boots with skirts or dresses, but not in a trendy way.
i feel like irl trends vary so much from city and country like i live in berlin and here it's like either arcsteryx and jack wolfsking jackets or full techno goth punk vibes. and online trends are either all the same or very niche and specific to someone's fyp
this is so interesting! i also think that those of us who aren’t made of money (lol) if we bought a piece of clothing when it was trendy (eg a pair of pants - kinda expensive) we’re not just gonna change our whole wardrobe every 6 months because the trend has changed. so a few years after it was trendy we’ll still wear it because at least in my household a perfectly fine pair of pants are not just getting thrown out
within the first two categories and i knew you had to be in the dc metro area. all your irl picks are spot on! and they LOVE those leather jackets with the flaps around here fr
Actually fur is very popular in my country right now, they are usually bought second-hand for ridiculous low amounts of money. The color red is also noticeable on the streets, but the rest of the trends are rare.
this is such a great observation. i follow fashion influencers and the entire vibe is completely different from a regular person, as they are striving for being more out there. i also live in the caribbean so what i see is often clothing appropriate to the weather, and social norms as we do not express individuality that much. everytime i see people wear "tiktok" fits its so jarring 😅
This is one of the downsides to algorithms:/ if I’m not actively remembering I begin to think that everyone’s (and I’m referring to my irls) Pinterest/tiktok looks the same, it also doesn’t help that my internet friends are also made in those highly curated virtual spaces!!!!! So I think everyone is wearing and doing the exact same thing until I log off
This is also a very good point - we surround ourselves with things/people we relate to, and tend to forget that everyone has their own little fashion preference group, and that they likely won't mesh together.
i live in countryside sao paulo, brazil, and believe you or not, sexy business casual is SUPER trending here and doesn't look like its going away any soon, same with wide leg denims/cargo. more special occasions people wear metalic crop tops and mini skirts or very shiny fabrics in neon colors or straight up black. ALWAYS highlighting the body shape
this reminds me when I was 18 and leaving for uni (1998), I thought I was entering the 'adult' world and scoured Vogue magazine for the latest looks and then replicated them through thrift. Boy was I surprised when I showed up at frosh week wearing chunky heels, flowing black dungarees and a knit sweater and everyone was wearing Abercrombie & Fitch and teddy ruxpin boots. I had to pivot real quick! lol
After you pointed it out, I seem to notice how online everyone is with the trends. Because it's more noticable, I'm even able to point out little girls in Sephora and how they're dressed. It makes me upset sometimes to notice how much the influence of the internet has impacted not only us, but the kids growing up with it. It's as if creativity is leaving.
I live in east LA, in a working-class neighborhood that is mostly black and latino, and I still see a lot of people, even younger people, wearing skinny jeans. When I go to west LA and am around more upper-class people, I see the chronically online look much more (e.g., baggy jeans, chunky dad sneakers, etc). But, yeah, a lot of people online really have no sense of self--they hop on the latest trends and just follow whatever the algorithm tells them.
I think the reason there’s such a discrepancy between the fashion we see online and in-person is because the online space is so saturated with fashion “leaders” (i.e. the folks who are first to adopt new trends and experiment before some of their ideas trickle into the mainstream). The algorithm tends to favor attention-catching content, so it makes sense that the newest fashions make up most fashion-minded people’s feeds! The mainstream “fashion followers,” the ones who are wearing already accepted trends (typically in a more practical way than with haute couture or fashion influencers) tend to get pushed back in the algorithm, even if their style is super cute and trendy outside of social media. My guess is more practical versions of some of the “online” trends will come into mainstream style over the next couple years, and I’m very excited to see where it goes :)
your videos are so interesting and well-made. i'm not even into fashion that much i'm more into makeup so ur channel keeps me updated lol keep up the good work!
This is so interesting. Quite a few of these "online only" trends are actually quite massive in Sydney Australia, in particular, Newtown. Big leather jackets, dark wash denim, pointy heels and boots, longer denim jorts (these were EVERYWHERE in Newtown during the most recent summer) - were not just common, but the norm to see amongst Newtown. I personally have all of these items and wear them alot. It's interesting to hear how different Australian fashion is from American. Best fashion imo is in the Inner West Sydney (Newtown, Marrickville in particular) and Melbourne.
It also depends on where you're from! As someone from Denmark the ripped lightwash jeans is not something you ever will see; you would get bullied. The dark oversized jeans though is something everyone is wearing.
@@FoundSheep-AN yea you would be hearing ppl whisper shit abt your "ugly jeans":) If you go to scandinavia you would know everyone is super stylish and ripped light washed jeans is NOT it
i live in brazil so the trends take even longer to arrive here, so far the only ones i've seen are the smaller shorts (wich is costant in brazillian fashion since before i was born), claw clips, block heels and maybe the slightly destroyed pants
I don't really keep up with trends, so imagine my surprise when you said the Penny Lane jacket was trending. I've been wearing mine for years, I've always loved Almost Famous and the 70s, had no idea it became something trendy that many people online are enjoying too. I wonder if they are keeping up with it for the trend or if the movie is getting love now, it would be really cool if more people were seeing it because it's truly such a great film
tbh I think a lot of people enjoy the online trends but aren’t brave enough to go out in them which I totally understand, I live in a very small town but nearby a major uk city and at home I’ll wear what I think is my most boring clothes and feel so immensely out of place and judged, but in the city I’ll wear my most outlandish stuff and feel sloppy lmao
I live in south of France and some of the real life looks aren't stylish here. Most of the time if somebody is well dressed (not everyone here dress good 😔) it's with past trend but people with the new trends are most of the time teens. Thanks for the video it was fun to watch 😊.
I lived in the south of france (aix en provence) last year for half a year and I thought lots of people there dressed really well! Maybe because virtually nobody wore athleisure or sweats
As an Australian in Melbourne, I definitely notice the city keeps up with trends really well, but also I’ll admit a lot of the “real life” trends in this video are probably exclusive to America
Also the difference is wearability and comfort. Yeah penny lane coats and el dante boots are nice, but if you're going to be sitting on the bus, going clothes shopping, or walking in the city you're not going to be super comfortable in comparison to posing in front of your camera.
I’m from NYC and I can attest that it’s a mix of both especially depending on the borough, neighborhood, etc. Also besides online trends, native NYers have their own fashion trends that have been constant for yearsss now (Moose knuckle and Canada goose coats, skinny jeans, black leggings, black sweats, Nike techs, jordans, timbs, Michael kors/mcm totes) so it’s interesting seeing it change from when you’re in SoHo to when you get to Jamaica, Queens lol
I noticed how in some videos they try to push wearing mini skirts 24/7 all year long, luxury fashion most people can't afford. overly flashy and inappropriate styles for work or school that might get someone dress coded, uncomfortable shoes, and impractical winter wear that is cute, but wouldn't keep anyone who lives in a really cold area warm.
this is so interesting to hear the sort of things you are seeing in America vs in the uk because I don’t think I’ve seen a pair of those Christian girl boots everrrrr in my life and in 2018 a couple of people had those Sherpa jackets but I NEVER see them anymore
I work in a department store and you are so right about the designer bags. As a pretty ‘online’ person (I don’t really obsess over following trends, I have my own style but I do watch a lot of fashion content) I would NEVER wear some of the obviously branded bags even if I could afford them lol. We sell so many Marc Jacobs tote bags and I will never understand why. It’s like paying to be a walking advertisement for the brand 😂 I prefer to have my own style which sure, I admit is not completely original and does have some influence from online trends but is ultimately more intentional and enjoyable than what I see ‘offline’ people wear. Even if I look ‘weird’ and ‘online’ to ‘normal people’ I know I am probably having more fun than them.
Also Location is a factor. Me dressed like a pinterest girly is gonna look a bit out of place in my town which is rural but probably id look like any other chick if I was in a crowded city like Sydney or New York.
I generally agree but I think it def depends where you live . I see a lot of these trends IRL in Melbourne but in my hometown which is much smaller definitely not.
I’ve been on a journey to have my own style, and even though some of my style is part of online trends like point toes heels and no rip jeans I have my own twist. I love straight leg pants and mid rise. I also love a kitten heel
I feel that this disconnect between online and in-person fashion is contributing to an almost "anything goes" kind of environment. Since there are so many trends, most of which aren't adopted by the majority of people, I feel there is a lot more freedom in how you choose to express your taste now. It's almost like an overarching theme is really just confidence and being comfortable/happy in your style :)
I think it also depends on location. In BELGIUM: The suade tall boots you don't see in Belgium at all. Interesting. Those furry coats you don't see as much (not long or short), it's all long coats or down jackets. The darker less distressing jeans you see more than lighter wash/rips nowadays. Designer things with big logos aren't really popular here, also no really really tiny bags. The belt bags are also popular tho. Almost no people wear dresses or skirts at all here, so it's difficult to compare those. Speaking of leather jackets, you do seem more of the motorcycle jackets. The block heel is also indeed more popular here.
it’s just unsettling how kids these days have access to social media so young and are immediately influenced by what trendy tiktokers are wearing. they don’t have that awkward phase of wearing the “puppy with sunglasses” shirts at 12, they’re out here trying to recreate some office siren shein outfit they saw online
I think one reason why things take a couple years to go from internet>> general public is the price. I always wish I could buy a something new and trending but it's usually not in my budget until it's trickled down to cheaper stores a few years later
As someone who goes to NYC often. I often see more 2020s type indie crystal girl aesthetic fashion with ALOT of them carrying tote bags, probably for the practicality.
I think it also depends a lot where u live, because here in germany i see a lot of people that dress kinda like those online trends or at least inspired by them
Puff sleeves were huge online in 2020, and didn't show up IRL until a couple of years later. I'm hoping a variety of shirt collars will make a mainstream resurgence soon. I love them. ❤️
I think the real question is what are these people doing with their trendy outfits they only seem to wear for validation online? We all know an extremely small percentage actually goes outside in them while the rest of the population wears a t-shirt & jeans to the Target, but what of the mob wife crowd, the fairy core girlies with their tiny winx outfits or the big billowy Selkie dresses they paid $300 for? What happens to those pieces once they log off after they get the compliments they wanted?
I live in a big city in Germany where people tend to dress more fashionable and trendy. Even here I don’t see those online trends as much as you would expect. Most people don’t care.
for the bows + wide leg dark wash jeans: I see these trends ALL the time irl! maybe its an age demographic thing but teenage girls everywhere in my area are putting bows in their hair and buying dresses and tops with bow details. I think the ribbon is a very accessible way to doll your hair up and tie onto your clothes and bags, so I see it a lot. And walking around malls and out and about, teenagers in general are moving towards less distressing and darker washes. I think teens are drawing things from online trends a lot more than adults because we're growing out of our clothes from when ripped skinny jeans and other clothes were at their trendiest and can buy new clothes without feeling like it's a waste.
Honestly this reminds me of the book So Yesterday by Scott Westerfeld, it’s a fiction book and it has the same concept of how trends trickle down, it’s so interesting
A lot of the stuff that’s trending in person has been around for years. Shorter denim shorts, have staying power and are like a classic. Yet, those suede knee high boots are considered out of style online but are still popular among the age group that were following the trend when they first popped up or a different fashion region style. I think of southerners when I see those.
i live in rural illinois and claw clips are HUGE here. i’m fine with it cuz i think they’re super cute! trends are usually around from about 2-3 years ago online. i see a lot of straight-leg jeans and VSCO girl aesthetics here, where i prefer a soft grunge look with baggy jeans and such. skinny jeans are also still super common here.
That is why, I don’t understand how some people might conclude that the trend cycle is moving too fast, when people in real life are still wearing the same things they wore a few years ago. Only people from the internet have moved on with these trends.
you are actually so right but i think as more young people are spending time online, these online trends will probably become real life trends faster, people my age are going to be the last generations that led any part of their lives without social media
this! for exemple i still see middle schoolers wearing skinny jeans but on internet everyone makes it sound like they bully ppl who still do or whatever
mosg of them just wear super basic sweaters and sneakers as well thats been there for years
@@moonchild6352 I too see a lot of teenagers wesr skinny jeans but I also read few comment on an artikle were 13-14 yo say that their mom makes them wear them. So sone of them cannot really descide on their own. But I also know lots of 20- years olds who wear skinny jeans willingly.
@@ines4242i can confirm that im a teenager and when i was in middle school i wore skinny jeans every day just because i didnt know other pants existed or at least didnt know how to wear them
also they were the only pants my parents gave me besides leggings since i was a kid
@@moonchild6352literally skinny jeans went nowhere
Sometimes I worry about not being fashionable enough but then I realize that 90% of the people I see in real life are just wearing jeans/leggings and a shirt or sweater. If you spend too much online it can make you feel like everyone is super trendy and cool when most people are just dressing simply and comfortably. I still follow online trends but I’ve started to just wear whatever I want rather than worry about if my outfit is Pinterest/instagram worthy.
as someone who makes fashion content im usually in my aerie flared leggings and and a basic long sleeve and i think this is the case for most of us
Oh my god I thought I was the only one worrying about this!
Your clothes should make you feel good.
same her girl
this is so true, I tend to follow the online trends (not chronically, but I usually like what I see the most of) but then I go out and looking like a "weirdo" because nobody is wearing these trends irl, or just very few people😅 it's a strange time we are living.
i'm the exact same way i like following online trends too and when i go out i look insane compared to everyone else lol i don't mind because im still confident but its so interesting how different things are
Yes I feel the exact same way!
Depends on where you live dear ! I lived in both Paris and Milan and I see people wearing TikTok outfits.
Came to say this, I see literally all of these every day in Brooklyn 🙃🙃
walking by the new school 💀
@@E42545 yeah Brooklyn and Manhattan definitely are more up to speed on the online trends but that makes sense bc they are the bigger fashion/culture boroughs. I think native New Yorkers also have their own trending personal style. For example, in the winter, moose knuckle and Canada goose coats with the fur lining and all black everything are super popular in Brooklyn, the Bronx and queens especially.
i love that you mentioned being able to tell someone is online when you see these trends in real life. i don’t think some people realize how obviously curated and influenced their style is rather than it being natural and genuine to them. it’s like seeing someone wear a 2023 titkoker cosplay.
loll why is this so true
Exactly. You put it into words.
It's so jarring in real life 😂
@@Renf-sk5li I saw someone who modeled their entire wardrobe and personality after the dark academia aesthetic. It was EXTRAORDINARLY jarring, because every single item they owned worked to curate this aesthetic. From their pencils, to their airpods case, to their belts; Nothing felt natural, because it wasn't.
@@El-de6njgenuine question, does it have to be natural?
There are definitely regional trends and they may not reflect what is popular online or in a different part of the country. I love looking for things that are popular in different areas when I travel. And I agree with your utility belt bag prediction. Cute and practical!
completely agree in a lot of non western countries some online trends may be considered too immodest or just too flashy to go out in, when i went to Nigeria last month i literally looked like a crazy person and got stared at a lot lol 💀🥲 trends were like the last thing on their mind 😭
I think about the trends of Harajuku, Tokyo, Japan which are a lot more adventurous than what I see in major US cities (only exception might be NYC).
What do you still wear today that was trendy in 2017 circa?
Fashion is very personalised and if you know what kind of style and cuts suits you, you know what current trend is for you.
clean girl, mob wife aesthetic, or what i like to call 'kardashian aesthetic 1 and 2', only complete if you had surgery to your face
i found the tumblr grunge and soft girl styles when i was 12 and i’ve just played those up or down over time lol depending on if i wanna be cute or edgy
Social media has replaced a good magazine
I feel like Pinterest has always been a good medium between those two for me. kinda like a personally curated digital magazine
Pinterest is just 50% ads for me 😭 and some of them are outright out of pocket with fat shaming and fake health advice
bring back fashion magazines
THANK. YOU. People think they are some kind of og trendsetters but they just got money and copy everything from tiktok 🗣
I went to uni to study design and can totally relate. Everyone wore the same stuff back then. But they prided themselves in being so unique and individualistic
yes!! all the quirky people at my art school blend in 👀
Omg as a poc artist I try to avoid going to white artist people spaces cause everyone is like this and on top of that they’re almost always so pretentious
And babe, isn't looking good the whole point ???
i see online trends in big cities but not in the rural areas in my country. when i travelled to japan, province or not, everybody was trendy
yeahh i can definitely see japan as somewhere that a lot of people are trend aware
I live in Paris and literally no one dresses like what you see online
I live in Australia, when I went to Japan even the average 75yo man there dresses way better then the average person here, their fashion is crazy good.
i dont think its neccessarily a trendy thing, their popular clothes are just generally a certain aesthetic, neutral, minimalist and quality material so it always looks quite good.
Flared/bootcut jeans have taken the hell off irl here; they've been in every fast fashion retailer for over a year already. I don't live in a particularly fashionable city, but i work in a charity thrift shop near my university, so i see a *lot* of these online trends in the people coming in. Cropped fur jackets, baggy darkwash jeans, military style caps and cargo bags, you name it!
i've actually seen more flares too on teenagers i think they're trying to go for that "rory gilmore" style ? same for the cargo bags
@@chisom. Yes!! flared dark blue jeans and black hi-tops with a double layered sweater (the kind with the pretend vest underneath?) - a uni student fave it has to be said
I live in Vienna and wear flared jeans and flared pants. But I rarely see anyone else here on the streets.
I walked into a Plato’s closet for like the first time in yearssssss and it was insane to see how much of the stuff was just from 1-2 years ago, trends that I only saw online

good point!
My GRANDFATHER made fun of them for dressing older than him
sounds about right
When I was in high school in New England it was North Face jackets and Ugg boots - still hasn't changed!
Even I myself am confused to why teenagers wear outfits like that, I’m a teen as well
Influencers tend to move through clothes quicker as they get gifted items and also buy items to make content. The rest of us are out here rewearing what we purchased years ago.
very true
this is what i think a lot of teen movies and shows get wrong with the costumes, they also try and dress them in online trendy fashion but in reality thats just not what teens actually would be wearing especially in smaller towns, as someone who was in high school only a few years ago I remember the popular and rich kids especially did not dress with the online trends
Tbh they should get a few actual teens (like a teen council or smth) to critique the fashion and stuff.
@@ally_washereyou don’t need more child labor you just need competent directors/costume designers. It’s been done right before, it’s just most directors don’t really care about the accuracy of their teenage characters
@@soymilkman Its not "child labor". They can look at some sets and costumes and clips for maybe an hour a week. Thats what Inside Out 2 is doing.
@@soymilkmanteens are allowed to work? many do. it’d just be a normal part-time job
so so important! but also I feel like the real life trends are simply what the internet perceives as outdated, more like the 2016-2019 kind of style - which is interesting as trends now move too fast to even be adapted gradually into real life, so will the majority of the population simply keep dressing like 2016 forever or will the current trends turn into real life ones in a few years all at once?
good thought! honestly idk especially with tiktok now there is literally always something that's why i just think people should wear what they like and leave the rest
yeah maybe trends will become less prevalent in real life over time, like we’ll have a mix of lots of different styles because of every individual’s exposure to fashion
As someone who lives in europe, I would say that most of these online trends hold true for real life here, while the "real life" trends you're mentioning, is definitely only trendy in the US
the old heads have never let fur coats go out of style weather it be to church or to a formal event they’ll always step out in a mink or something lol
nah frr 😭
i think it just takes some time for trends to tickle down to the irl now. maybe bc online is just such a rush for content and you constantly need sth new bc the post/video/photo from yesterday is still there and ppl feel the need to constantly produce new content while irl you just wear what you have and what's available in shops. most people don't get on the trend right away, they don't want to be the odd one out or they don't pay that much attention until the thing is everywhere
literally even as a small fashion creator on here i feel somewhat of a push to "keep up" and have cute things to show on here
and honestly most people are just too busy with other things to be concerned if they're clothes aren't trending currently
Online wide leg jeans are trending, irl skinny jeans are still popular. At least where I live, anyways🤷🏽♀️
same, i think most people just don't have enough disposable income to discard perfectly good jeans just because they're the "wrong cut"
I just overheard a conversation about how outdated skinny jeans are lol
I know several people, myself included, who are just too short for this wide leg pant mess, and lived through the years of walking on the back of their pants and having them soak up a ton of water when it rains. There's a solid amount of millenials and gen x who are just not about that life.
where i live baggy jeans, mom jeans, and flared jeans are trending. def no ripped jeans or skinny jeans
@@chisom.I live in Southern Europe in a fashionable city and all my millennial friends are still wearing skinny. I am not though
living in amsterdam , online trends are a irl trends here. So it'a a lot of fun to dress up here
omg that sounds amazinf
i feel like this just comes down to trends filtering into the mainstream. social media has just become a place where newer, more 'fashion forward' ideas brew within a smaller niche, until it becomes more popular among the mainstream users and gets picked up by mainstream fashion brands, until it filters into the general population. this is probably why the masses tend to wear things that you mind think were trendy 3 years ago! rlly interesting video - you gained a subscriber x
yepp like how the coquette style was already popular on tumblr and pinterest 2-3 years ago and now it's in fast fashion stores
This😭😭 I got into it 2-3 years ago bc tumblr and it’s like so weird to see it in like hm
3-4 years feels like one year meshed together. I can’t be hearing these things.
So I'm not going out of my way to buy another jacket
completely agree most people aren't going to discard perfectly good clothes because they aren't "on trend" also most people we see online they're job is basically to be trendy so they're gonna take it more seriously and they also get sent clothes, people in real life likely have more important things to allocate they're money towards, i think that's also why younger people tend to dress more trendy as they have less financial responsibilities and can spend more on clothes.
also so happy you liked the video 🥰
Honestly the difference between Shein and a really good thrift find is night and day (not knocking Shein here ik it's all some people can afford or they like how it looks)
definitely have noticed a lot of claw clips in person! other trends in my area are white socks over leggings, those crescent bags, and baggy jeans
U don't really see that when ppl do style breakdown videos so THANK U!!!
ahh girl don't thank me for that, it's a must !!!
i go to school in LA, and i def see a majority of the "irl trends" dominating like, the normie pretty girl culture. but then there are quite a few "online fashion" girlies walking around on the daily. sacramento has a surprising amount of online trends walking about too--but i notice the sac youths seems to have an attraction to alternative/darker/grungier vibes more-so these days-- honestly, i live for it.
it could be that the youth is broke so they dress grungey lol
I've always love the Euro fashion style. Not sure what it is...I've studied it for years.
Americans wear pajamas in public so yes I’d say Europeans put way more effort into their fashion.
@@izabella7174I see online trends in Paris all the time especially among young people
I highly agree with your points, also what's on the street highly depends on what country you live in. For example I personally don't think Mob Wife and skinny bottoms are gonna turn into a mainstream trend until Winter 24-25 if it even survives even in the big cities that are fashion oriented.
yeah, i live in the desert so the mob wife stuff is going nowhere near my area
What’s interesting about this is that I see both living in NYC. I wear more online-like clothing and my peers and the people I see around the city are also dressing similarly. However, I also see the in person trends just not on “fashion-forward” people.
I agree with this so much! I'm in my first year of college, and no one wears all the extreme trends that social media displays; most girls are still wearing leggings, jeans, or yoga pants with sweatshirts or teeshirts, or boots with skirts or dresses, but not in a trendy way.
i feel like irl trends vary so much from city and country like i live in berlin and here it's like either arcsteryx and jack wolfsking jackets or full techno goth punk vibes. and online trends are either all the same or very niche and specific to someone's fyp
this is so interesting! i also think that those of us who aren’t made of money (lol) if we bought a piece of clothing when it was trendy (eg a pair of pants - kinda expensive) we’re not just gonna change our whole wardrobe every 6 months because the trend has changed. so a few years after it was trendy we’ll still wear it because at least in my household a perfectly fine pair of pants are not just getting thrown out
within the first two categories and i knew you had to be in the dc metro area. all your irl picks are spot on!
and they LOVE those leather jackets with the flaps around here fr
i literally live for your intro girl !!!
thank youuuu
Actually fur is very popular in my country right now, they are usually bought second-hand for ridiculous low amounts of money. The color red is also noticeable on the streets, but the rest of the trends are rare.
“i can tell that that person is online” omg i didn’t expect to catch strays 💀💀💀 great video!!
Thanks ☺️ 😭
this is such a great observation. i follow fashion influencers and the entire vibe is completely different from a regular person, as they are striving for being more out there. i also live in the caribbean so what i see is often clothing appropriate to the weather, and social norms as we do not express individuality that much. everytime i see people wear "tiktok" fits its so jarring 😅
do you feel negatively about not being encouraged to express individuality?
@@chisom. of course! every day it hurts to be afraid of judgement
Yep I feel online fashion is more prevalent in richer areas where people have the luxury to buy clothes more frequently and keep up with "trends"
I personally see more of the “online” trends IRL where I live (or maybe 50/50) but I live in NYC
yeah where I live i don't see it very often mostly among my friends
your videos are so interesting and well-made. i'm not even into fashion that much i'm more into makeup so ur channel keeps me updated lol keep up the good work!

Best fashion imo is in the Inner West Sydney (Newtown, Marrickville in particular) and Melbourne.
uh oh people can tell if im chronically online😂
it's okay me too 🩷
I've been wearing the same leopard print coat for 4 years now and didn't even realize it 😅
Great video! I feel like no one is really fashionable anymore, too many trends
i completely agree and Thank You 🩷
no lie, you were literally so accurate. I even had some of the real life trends lol
It also depends on where you're from! As someone from Denmark the ripped lightwash jeans is not something you ever will see; you would get bullied. The dark oversized jeans though is something everyone is wearing.
Bullied for a light washed ripped jeans?
Honestly this title can work for so many things, I swear people see online as a fantasy land where they can do whatever
I live in south of France and some of the real life looks aren't stylish here. Most of the time if somebody is well dressed (not everyone here dress good 😔) it's with past trend but people with the new trends are most of the time teens. Thanks for the video it was fun to watch 😊.
thank you for watching 🩷🩷
7:15 in my school yes claw clips are popular but wayyyy more girls wear ribbons than youd think
Even tho Black wide jeans seems like no that bad, I think people don't used in public because they are afraid of being call "emo".
Note to self: get some black wide jeans
I work in a department store and you are so right about the designer bags. As a pretty ‘online’ person (I don’t really obsess over following trends, I have my own style but I do watch a lot of fashion content) I would NEVER wear some of the obviously branded bags even if I could afford them lol. We sell so many Marc Jacobs tote bags and I will never understand why. It’s like paying to be a walking advertisement for the brand 😂
I prefer to have my own style which sure, I admit is not completely original and does have some influence from online trends but is ultimately more intentional and enjoyable than what I see ‘offline’ people wear. Even if I look ‘weird’ and ‘online’ to ‘normal people’ I know I am probably having more fun than them.
i've always hated those branded bags like ur literally a walking billboard i def agree it's better to have your own style
In BELGIUM:
The suade tall boots you don't see in Belgium at all. The block heel is also indeed more popular here.
it’s just unsettling how kids these days have access to social media so young and are immediately influenced by what trendy tiktokers are wearing. they don’t have that awkward phase of wearing the “puppy with sunglasses” shirts at 12, they’re out here trying to recreate some office siren shein outfit they saw online
this is such a great reality check
i also love your editing & set up!!
thank you 😊 💕
i love the concept of this video so much, please do another one!
i got you
I loveeeeee you’re intro, so cute and creative😍
Thank you so much!!
I think one reason why things take a couple years to go from internet>> general public is the price. I always wish I could buy a something new and trending but it's usually not in my budget until it's trickled down to cheaper stores a few years later
oh for sure i think that's why fast fashion has gotten so popular because a majority of people can afford it
I agree with you 100% im in London and its so easy to see who is following online trends its almost sickening
As someone who goes to NYC often. I often see more 2020s type indie crystal girl aesthetic fashion with ALOT of them carrying tote bags, probably for the practicality.
love how you got straight into the video, enjoyed it!!
thank you sm 🩷🩷
Ty for this, a little dose of mundane reality is so needed online and I'm so glad to see this in my algorithm. ❤
Omg the intro is so cuteee
I think it also depends a lot where u live,
because here in germany i see a lot of people that dress kinda like those online trends
or at least inspired by them
Puff sleeves were huge online in 2020, and didn't show up IRL until a couple of years later. I'm hoping a variety of shirt collars will make a mainstream resurgence soon. I love them. ❤️
Same here!
What happens to those pieces once they log off after they get the compliments they wanted?
they go in a landfill
I live in a big city in Germany where people tend to dress more fashionable and trendy. Even here I don’t see those online trends as much as you would expect. Most people don’t care.
Yes, I feel like the bigger the city, the less most people care. There are some highlights here and there though!
I live in Paris and beforehand in a small city and in my experience online trends were real life trends. But I love the video 💗💗
What? I live here too and see no one wearing the online trends. What part of town do you live in?
@@izabella7174 9th district but I’m in fashion school so maybe it plays a part in it too
for the bows + wide leg dark wash jeans: I see these trends ALL the time irl! maybe its an age demographic thing but teenage girls everywhere in my area are putting bows in their hair and buying dresses and tops with bow details.
I just looked the up and now u wanna see if my library has it
A lot of the stuff that’s trending in person has been around for years. Shorter denim shorts, have staying power and are like a classic. Yet, those suede knee high boots are considered out of style online but are still popular among the age group that were following the trend when they first popped up or a different fashion region style. I think of southerners when I see those.
i live in rural illinois and claw clips are HUGE here. i’m fine with it cuz i think they’re super cute! trends are usually around from about 2-3 years ago online. i see a lot of straight-leg jeans and VSCO girl aesthetics here, where i prefer a soft grunge look with baggy jeans and such. skinny jeans are also still super common here.
ty queen for keeping it real
always 🩷
